Matthew Chapter 24 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Jesus leaves the Jerusalem Temple, climbs the Mount of Olives, and suddenly transforms from wandering moral teacher into a full-blown apocalyptic street preacher. In this Matthew 24 atheist Bible podcast breakdown, we unpack the Olivet Discourse, the destruction of Jerusalem, the “abomination that causes desolation,” falling stars, false messiahs, and Jesus repeatedly insisting that the end is coming very, very soon.

The problem? Matthew was written after Rome destroyed the Temple in 70 CE, making Jesus’s supposedly miraculous prediction feel less like prophecy and more like someone filling out a March Madness bracket after the championship game. The chapter also borrows heavily from Daniel, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Zechariah, because apparently the New Testament’s favorite creative technique is copy, paste, add Jesus.

We also dig into the verse declaring that “this generation will certainly not pass away” before these events occur, Jesus admitting that even he does not know when the big day is coming, and the theological pretzel required to explain how Jesus can be fully God while somehow knowing less than God.
