From tailgating to afterschool snacks, fairway has everything that my entire family needs. Same. Unbelievable. Chad Listeko, Goddokerman. The two biggest Hawkeye and Big Ten beat writers together on one show. Game day men's health proudly present. Legends and listeners best enjoyed with an easy eddy from Big Grove Brewery. This is Legends and listeners exclusively on iowa everywhere. Hey Hawkeye fans, Big Ten fans and I, when's everywhere, it is Syhawk Week on Legends and listeners presented by Game Day men's health. We are in the Channel Seed Studios. Huge shout out to fairway, Meet and Grocery, which is presenting
all the content this week on iowa everywhere. All the Syhawk coverage presented by fairway meet and Grocery. And we have one in my town of Adele and I'm representing Adele today with my shirt. As both teams have a running back from my hometown or not my hometown but my current town will be in my hometown on Saturday night Scott Chad Listeko Des Moinders just got to Dr. Manny Athletic. Scott we got an iowa football game in the books and a big one to preview on the horizon. Good to have something to digest preview and discuss, huh? Yeah it is. We were finally into substantial types of coverage for everybody. We had a whole offseason of here's what we think. Here's what we think we know. Here's what people are telling us. But now we actually have the proof and that's always the best part of this and because here we are. It's a Syhawk week, one of the biggest weeks of the year in the state of iowa especially week two because it really just sets the table for the entire season for both programs.
Yeah and I think we'd be remiss and certainly don't want to even start talking about football until we talk about Derek Phillips, the young man who who lost his life at the iowa basically at the iowa game from the heat. You know I had an incident in the heat. Just heartbreaking. I know you know I have kids that are in band. You do too. It just hits differently. You know it's band kids are the best you know and you just feel for Derek, feel for his family. Just a heartbreaking tragic thing and we just want to send our thoughts to his family as well. Yeah that was not one of my that was not a story I like to write at all. It's horrible. It's so sad because you know when you have children that have that age I mean yes he's the young adult but you know when you have kids of that age and you see you know something so tragic taking
happening and and you know my son was that he was in drama when he was Derek was that at Western Dubuque High School and played Dracula I think it was and then he was been in the in the band he was marching down you know the cold weather the last game that you've got to do at Kinex Stadium against Nebraska and went on the band trip and and it's it's just really a sad situation. We feel for his family prayers to them you know if there's one consolation with this though Chad it is the way that the bands are very close around the country with one another and and whether that's high school or college or beyond and and to see the way bands have poured out their emotions there's one that's going to do a rendition of amazing grace and dedicated to him this weekend I was state last night on Tuesday and I had a moment of silence at the volleyball game I'm sure there'll be something done on Saturday so we we certainly our prayers and thoughts are with
Derek's family and friends and we hope that the memories can sustain them in this horrible tragic time absolutely well said glad you brought up those things as well a lot to discuss a lot of drama a lot of action in the big 10 we'll be sure to manufacture some extra time on the clock later to get to get to that during this show Scott maybe an extra second or two but let's talk Hawkeyes and obviously we're gonna we're gonna dive deep into the iwi I would stay match up because I think it's a pretty fascinating matchup despite the point spread here but let's talk what do you want I mean I think Cubis is is top of mind for me I think when when when I went back and rewatch the game I thought it was pretty even honestly I know there's a lot of thought that Hank Brown you know dominated day and and when you look back at it it means 12 to 20 for 129 that's not that great
he finished 4 of 11 for 38 I thought his mechanics really unraveled and he even agreed to that when I talked to him on Tuesday and you know I thought heck let's get a little bad luck he didn't perform real well but you know I'm just curious what you think should happen a quarterback and what do you think will happen a quarterback this week wow what should happen I think they should continue to rotate them and I think first of all our impressions were by based on the first quarter and I think they were based on the vibes of how the offense was playing in the first quarter I mean you know Iowa overall you know we're was 9 of 11 in passing in the first quarter and then after that I mean it was less than 50% that's not good and and that's on both the quarterbacks and I think that's something that you know I probably is evaluated here I think people got caught up because the offense collectively looked great early on and a lot of that had to deal with
nymphs scoring points and also the way the run game looked also helped the passing game so I think right now you've got to take as we took the step back because I think we probably leading the press box Chad and I don't want to put words in your mouth but I think we're probably on the same line here we probably thought wow okay Hank Brown did a nice job he's probably the starter and then when evaluate it all you know clear all the emotions the moment out it was really fairly even and I think that that's probably problematic but I also think that they've they've got to get closer to a decision the problem is it's it's clearly cloudy as what Kirk would say yeah I mean certainly the offense like you said look look great you know good enough 500 plus yards for the first time since the Nate Stanley era so give them a lot of credit for that 372 of those yards
came in the first half you would have liked to see and you know Jeremy Hicklensky hit that deep shot on fourth down to Diaz up the left side you'd like to see Hank Brown connect with DJ Vename in the end zone kind of felt like you threw it over the wrong shoulder there at least there was a miscommunication Brown mis Diaz in the end zone you know later in the second quarter and Hicklensky mis Diaz up the right side so I mean there was there was four pretty significant passes that just got missed by the quarterbacks and then you throw in one drop from Vename one pretty long drop by Vanderzee on a what would have been a 29 30 yard gain from Hicklensky one of his better throws at the game just think how that would have changed the stats there as well Scott and and I thought Hicklensky had the best throw of the day which was pressure in his face I think it was his third attempt of the whole game 13 yards you know under pressure to Jerubui perfectly placed that's that's the type of pressure throw you want to see I want to give
Hank Brown credit to he had a real nice third and 10 striked of Ename was a simple throw but kind of crossing in the in the second quarter there that was a nice clutch throw from Hank and I like to see Hank scramble on a third down two so they both had their moments but you know just makes me they both had five possessions Hank scored on all his possessions but again Khmeri Molten scored and the offense offensive line we're out you know the starting five offensive line that helps here your your quarterback as well so I'm gonna guess they're gonna start Brown against got but I wouldn't be opposed to flipping it just to say hey we want to see Hicklensky you know maybe he had a better week of practice who knows I wouldn't be opposed to what I'd be surprised though given kind of the fluidity we saw from Hank Brown leading that offense leading the script you know you wanting try to replicate that fast start again against Iowa State yeah one of the things Kirk when I talked to him about this during the summer was he divides play
into these roles because when you can't parse the statistics and and even then you want to be fair you don't want to go well he was he threw for 60% he threw for 48% so therefore we're gonna start the 60% guy that that just doesn't really measure up unless it's in practice every day cumulative yes one game no so vibes do play a role and the offense had a lot of success when Hank Brown was in there collectively however as we saw the offensive line was as good and dominant as I've ever seen it man some of those holes that Khmeri Molten ran through any of the running backs would have ran through any of the quarterbacks would have ran through Hick even Spencer Petrus would have got a lot of yards on though you know if he was running draws that was that was a masterful blocking that was made me go okay this this line is back to be in great but they weren't pressured there were no sacks so there was a little bit of pressure but it wasn't overwhelming this week there has that potential so I think maybe this week might be able to
establish some sort of difference because they're probably gonna face some third downs they're probably gonna face some some pretty good pass rush at least a couple of times in the game and how they respond to that how they respond to getting hit knockback big sacked throw it a bad pass because I don't really consider Hicklensky's interception anything I mean he had to get rid of it and he threw it at the end zone and I'm forced out so I think that to me Chad this is the game where you want to see some sort of separation and then run with it next week yeah you think that yeah you want to see that you want to see that but obviously if it's even you got to keep it going I think I mean so but yeah you're right it would be nice to if one of them kind of establishes this week you know hey I'm a gamer and then yeah gets the the bulk of the game against Northern Iowa next week which should be a ceremonial victory but but what else we you know it's a this show comes out
on Thursday morning you know so we we don't spend a lot of time rehashing but we should probably you know talk a little bit about the first game what did you like the most and what did you maybe like the least about this or maybe I don't however you want to phrase it what like struck you from this opening game for the Hawkeyes I think I would start with just the overall run defense it was it was phenomenal and we we had questions about the defensive line and we still do because we you know you you know you go and against Northern Illinois who may be one of the worst FPS programs you know it's a good win not take anything away from them but it's not like who they're going to be playing this week or in a couple of weeks so you've got to understand that okay they know they had a really good win they threw a they threw a ton of guys out there which was really smart you know we especially in the heat to to do not have anybody get sick or whatever but then also see what you have and I think we saw some things from some of the edge rushers that I was really kind of
impressed with I you know a guy like you know Kamari Brown was you know which we knew was a really good past pressure I think Joseph Anderson did a nice job you know coming in and you know he's got to be more of a of a more than a one trick pony out there but he's also that one trick is going to help them if they use it the right way and then I think also you I think the way they shut down the run collectively on defense was something that I thought was really impressive because I mean it was it wasn't until the fourth quarter where they even got above I think above zero above freezing you know on this so that's probably where I would start to head yeah just to piggyback off that I would say you know again what's every time we can talk about this we're going to throw an asterisk up there northern Illinois was not good okay um Seema was not good either in the other game we're going to talk about um but it looked like a Phil Parker defense out there like I thought
maybe the defense might take three four five six games to kind of come together and I'm not saying it's it's going to be dynamic but it just looked like it functioned like a high level Phil Parker defense down to the the point of a tweak we saw the three three five which I loved getting pressed and re-sendered wise cough on the field together and buffing to stays out there so those that three recruiting classes out there and then you and a peel off a detackle which is your weakest position of at least perceptionally um although Wilhuebert and Luke Gaffney played pretty well I thought anyway and Hawthorne looks like a beast um so then then you get your speed guys off the edge you had comarie brown drew Campbell on in that first rendition of it I loved it because then press and re-s can just use his freak Bruce Feldman freak gifts a couple Bruce Feldman freaks out there um on the in that three three five backage but it just looked like a Phil Parker defense which
gives me a lot more optimism because I think that I still think this offense is going to be pretty dang good when all is said and done and so if you're telling me the defense might be a tick better further along than I thought then I'm feeling um pretty good about this team overall one game in we all over react to week one I know but uh that stood out to me more than Tony Diaz Camarie Molta and anything like that I thought the defense was um it very impressive yeah yeah because I didn't know what to expect there um you know I mean I thought that they would be good but I also don't don't know necessarily you know are they gonna give up a lot of yards are they gonna give up some big plays are they gonna um you know they're they're gonna run on them at times you know and there really wasn't anything that they could I mean the first uh third down the or first first down they got was late in the third quarter off a penalty so I mean it was really um such a dominant effort and and I think what I also liked Chad was and I know that there
was some mix and a match it was late in the game is so hot as we know so you take everything with the grain of salt like you said we're gonna asterisk the heck out of this podcast on whatever we talk about but um I liked the younger players getting in and playing really well like like Julian Manson's a dude man I mean he I know he's a true freshman and um he's he's the type of guy that he's like when you go to Disney and they I don't know if they have it anymore but you know you have the regular line you have the fast line fast-pass he's like the fastpass it's like next year he might just leap everybody and start I mean he's just that athletic and a guy you just can't leave off the field and maybe he's in the three three five as a blitz kind of guy you know or something like that or playing space once in a while um he is um built differently as they say and I I really like that and I I'm you know so overall I was really impressed I mean I you know the for whatever reason and I you didn't start uh in Toronto Dickens and I'm like you know this dude
I don't understand it but you know he threw it fairly well late but he got sacked a lot because that's all they were doing but but overall like I mean you got to give him for most of the defense pretty much an A I mean they shut him out you know yeah and they won every category yeah and even with that garbage time yardage it was the sixth fewest yards of the pharins era that's a long era that's pretty good that's pretty good uh 19th shut out of the pharins era just want to point out I'm drinking a free wave IPA from athletic brewing the free wave is one of my one of my faves uh it's a hazy IPA with amorello citra and mosaic hops athletic brewing is perfect for post game writing by the way if you if you want to crack open and I'll be doing a lot of that this Sunday morning I guess once I get back you know into a comfortable spot to probably two three in the morning uh writing so athletic brewing is perfect for that perfect for any occasion
it's fit for all times check out their products at athletic brewing.com uh scat I don't know you got something going there too you know what Chad I figure if you're gonna have one I'm gonna have one and uh I've got a tiger hawk again and I'm you know and I'm also gonna pimp here the the easy adi at big growth and I think as we know you know easy adi at big growth uh go there synonymous with beer in the state of Iowa it is the most popular homegrown beer I think it's probably a little better to the ones in the north and and for me though I really like the tiger hawk it's a pills nerd tastes a lot like to me uh you know what you get it was constant with a spotted cow and if you're in the state of Iowa this week all eyes will be on kinic stadium but if you're not at kinic stadium where you want to go before or after uh you know head to big grove there's one in Iowa city in south Iowa city the big one uh I was up in solan last week I went up met some friends of mine from Texas and the virgin islands who haven't gotten back very often and ran into ben macolum I was there it's just it's his home away from home it looks like and
kind of normed from cheers when he goes to to big grove brewery in solan and then also uh hit the one on kinkston yard and cedar app it's in Des Moines where they're having a big tailgate party on thursday night and uh then of course there's one in Omaha in in prairie village so crack open a one like me well scott uh Iowa really looked locked in uh on week one uh very encouraging uh which led me to ask Kirk fairness a question in this week's presser about what he kind of expected because this is a little bit of a younger team for the hot guys a lot of new players you only got six scholarship 50 year fifth or six year seniors so I kind of asked him what he kind of expected from this team on a week to week basis and uh his answer surprised me a bit I thought maybe we'd let you guys listen to it and then we can react yeah I'd say this so too um been in situations where it works both ways where you know you got a veteran team that might be two veteran uh that can happen
and then sometimes uh beauty of maybe not being as veteran as you don't know any better like you should be hey we should be a little bit more worried about this this week but um sometimes the guys are oblivious to that so you know my encouragement to them is but just no self-imposed feelings like you know we acknowledge who we are what we are but don't put a limit on yourself uh because of that because that's it's not the whole story so be aware of it be cognizant and then also know because of that whether areas we got to really make up for it in other areas and so far so good and I you I think you heard me say you're going I did because you were here uh you're ago I felt really good about the leadership pretty early on uh this year I've been curious to see how it's going to go and I'm it's it's still a you know a dynamic process here but um you know we looked like a team that had good leadership Saturday like the guys you know you coaches help get a team ready but that that's not the whole story players get themselves ready and thought they did a good job with that but that's that's only one down so we'll see the interior point it's gonna with each
week it gets interesting this week's always an interesting week in our state so it's another challenge to deal with there no self-imposed feelings I thought that answer was eye opening it made me think right away to 2009 kind of a year early um what what did you think Scott absolutely I think that he that's what he thought and it's it's the perfect way to to say you know that just because you're a young team doesn't mean that all said well we should just reach this level as he remembered you know I remember distinctly going into to 2009 and Kirk saying we we may have a better team but a worse record based in the year before where they finished nine and four because of the schedule and they had a lot of really tough opponents that year but they were able to win those games and uh the next year they had everybody back I mean they were starting the year rank number eight and I think we were all thinking that they were at minimum a BCS bowl team and that was pretty hard to get into because the only two from the big ten could and and yet they lost all
the close games and so it works both ways so don't short change yourself just because you have all these young players because Chad we're looking at this team and yes the defensive line is young yes the quarterback situation is unsettled and kicker is still a major concern in my eyes outside of that though this team based on what I saw this weekend in the big 10 it's it's pushing the upper limb upper level I mean you know I don't see it and that you know any farther down than a USC or Penn State or certainly is better than Michigan and Washington from what it looked like in the first game so don't don't pose a ceiling anything's possible this year let it go so yeah I love that attitude yeah I did too and it just made me think of experiences I've had I'm guessing a lot of you out there you know if you've if you've been a coach if you've been an athlete sometimes you're on a team with with people that don't know better you know like uh guys that
are hungry young guys that are hungry and you know sometimes you can get comfortable seniors not always I mean last year 27 seniors you know I wouldn't I felt like that they they did a pretty good job with you know they're very resilient took care of business but man take advantage of this and that leads us into this week's game Scott you can this is a game this season all of a sudden to me has a little more opportunity we're gonna talk about Michigan a little later this season has a little more opportunity than maybe we thought and that we're not saying that based off one game but just the whole whole conference the schedule but this game is tricky it always is it's it hasn't been a blowout either side since 2016 that's been a full decade now Scott uh the point spread has not been more than four points in any of these games some seven 17 18 19 21 22 23 24 25 the biggest spread and there was actually Iowa State favored by four in 2021 that was the biggest blowout
so the other way so um this game is very important all suddenly because Iowa State looked better than I expected okay um Iowa looks good but you don't want to squander this non-conference start you want to set yourself up now for a potential no ceilings imposed ceiling season yeah you know what Chad I'm there with you and and the here's it's it's interesting because when we talk about Iowa and then we oh and we talk about this series we immediately start to think back to times before games before where it's this game like and and I mean what what comes to me it's almost 20 years ago which ages me and immensely but was 2007 Iowa kicked a hell out of Syracuse 35 to nothing and there were two and oh Tony Mojaki catches some passes you know they looked apart Jake Christiansons playing well Iowa State I think they were they might have been
there were oh and two or one and one but they lost a you and I the week before and this was Gene Chiswick's first year and I don't I'd have to look up the spread but man I mean it looked to me like oh man you know this is this is gonna be a blowout and we go over there oh and two yeah I lost a you and I and Kent State and and Iowa was 2 and 0 and again Gene Chiswick was the coach and I mean it you just felt like oh man this is this is gonna be a blowout no went over to Ames and Shaggy kicks five field goals including the game winner with only a couple seconds left and ultimately it was you know and and I went it up six and six out here and so you don't know until you know however you know in 2014 kind of felt the same way too you know the Paul Rhodes era was kind of winding down and they went to and 10 that year Iowa was supposed to challenge for the West Division title last second field goal and so there are those examples that you fear however
circumstances have changed quite a bit I mean there's what 81 83 new players for Iowa State that's that's unprecedented um you're going to get a great shot no question about it the intensity is gonna be there it's gonna be off the charts if you handle your business and I think that was the mood of the day I they sensed on Tuesday was business like if you handle your business I wish you had no problem with this game I wish I probably cover however you you when you get business like and you don't execute then you get tight and then you get close and then you get the situations like what I experienced said and you know seven and 14 and a couple other times so I think that's and that's always the fear for the Iowa fans who've been through all of this to think oh man it's it just seems too good to be true so you're kind of they're kind of standoffish on this parents has lost three times as a heavy favorite against the cyclones 2005 2007 and 2014 so
lost outright okay so it there is precedent and I'm thankful that you didn't bring up 1987 Scott that would have been yeah we were not talking about 1987 anymore you went you went back to 07 but that's all right no um so let's talk about this matchup because I think it's fascinating I think I thought Iowa State showed some really good things the other day against SEMO and again asterisk all around let's talk about let's let's look at this matchup let's start with when Iowa State has the ball how's that sound I think when Iowa has the ball is going to be pretty fun when Iowa State has the ball is very interesting I mean they have a quarterback that can move he didn't show that as much in the opener but Iowa absolutely expects him to be using his legs a lot more in this particular game they they uncorked a bunch of unique formations a nine alignment formation a seven alignment formation with one of them was a fullback they had a full
house backfield at one point so the given Iowa a lot to prepare for here Scott and I was impressed with I was impressed with the quarterback I thought his his deep balls look good you know he was only eight for 16 but he completed you know 20 plus yards per completion so what do you think about when I was state has the ball what's the key for Iowa I think you know the key is to me there are three facets and two of them are what they preach every single week number one up the run well you know they didn't run the ball very effectively I didn't think you know I was state you know with 121 well 108 total rushing yards I thought you know in a 3.5 yards per carry so do what you got to do up front and I think they'll be fine there number two and I think this is the most important part of it for Iowa when they're going against Iowa State you know and or an rainer in particular is don't get be deep you know that's why they play the two deep secondary and
that's why they only play seven in the box because they want to prevent the big play and we saw that rainer is not afraid to throw it you know he's got receivers who are capable of catching it and and they're going to attack down the field and make big plays and and that's the one way I don't know that Iowa State can go up and down the field on Iowa with regularity but you know 50 yard pass doesn't hurt and and then number three is be very cognizant careful with rainer don't let him scramble don't let him you know get out of your pass rush lanes pin him in make him beat you with his arm in a way where he's got to throw the 15 you know 15 yard digger out you know that he's got to go through his progressions against you make him beat you that way don't let him break contain and all sun he's out run into the right and he's got to run past option and throw or run that's you know those broken down plays could really hurt you and that's where the inexperience may come in for Iowa that you know they are pretty inexperience on the front seven so I think that's
to me what I would I think are the three key core areas for Iowa when they're defending against Iowa State yeah I would let me point out I felt like two of the new starters for the Hawkeyes uh that we did hardly have played at all um I thought looked tremendous two of the better players on defense the other day were Kim Buffington and Jacob Wallace both played really well in my opinion I think that was validated by some others as well um so that's a good sign because those are the guys you need to kind of be race stuff you know um and you get now the now corner bet DeShawn Lee and Jaylen Watson they didn't get tested the other day really I mean I can't even think of I don't even think they had time to put get a deep shot off um so those guys are gonna get tested and I'm sure Jimmy Rogers will test them um that is Rainer's game so um they got six foot five out there wide receiver had two 40 plus yard catches um that's scary and they're gonna try to take
those shots and they're gonna they're gonna try to be uh bullies in the run game uh I think the one thing that uh and I listened to Jeff Woody on the CW pod um talking about you know they've got so many new offensive lineman and I really noted the contrast of I was offensive line versus what I was states got an offensive line where I was guys that even though they haven't started together they've played together for four years I mean Layton Jones Trevor Laugh, Kale Winter, Kade Piper they're all fourth year guys that all played on the Dvo team you know the Dvo scout team but way back when they've lived together they know how it feels to play together they know how to give off a block or Jeff Woody I'm quoting Jeff Woody here and these Iowa state guys they're just throwing guys out there right they don't know that stuff so I think there's uh I think it's gonna be hard for them to establish a consistent push even though we have questions about I was D line um just because I think you know even though there's an experience I do think Iowa has a lot of
talent on that defensive line I mean he got yo saponess there we got Jack Campbell's brother there Kamari Brown is is a freak um and uh you know Kenny Murray whether there's no slouch either and then I thought Hawthorne was was absolutely tremendous not only in his play but also in kind of how he spoke after the game real a true leader so I'd like those pieces for Iowa on the D line so I think that's a key just to almost make Iowa's like you said you can't just let them chip away at you you just got to make them uh you got to get those you know zero and one yard gains you know lock them up for for those minimal gains they're gonna pop they're gonna pop some on the other gonna pop a ranger hit he'll he'll get loose a couple times probably but you also have to just erase them and I think Iowa's team speed on defense um it might I would like to talk to Ray bereth wait about his numbers I haven't talked to him about it but I have to imagine this is one of the faster defenses he has had at Iowa because you put Zach Lutmer at free safes he has a starting point
and then you put buffington in there and I mean I think Jayne Montgomery is playing really well um uh this this defense has a lot of speed right now Scott yeah it sure does and and and here's the thing Iowa State this year this team not any in the past because I and maybe it would have been possible but this team cannot go toe to toe with Iowa on offense I mean they only had the ball for 23 minutes against Seymour I mean Seymour had the ball for almost 37 minutes in this game they only ran the ball for 3.5 yards per carry those are numbers you if you can't do that against an FCS um uh a mid to lower level FCS team how are you gonna do that against a ranked big 10 opponent that's that's really good I think that's so what you do is you figure out all right how do we get big plays on how can we adjust how can we do things that's what you got to prepare for if you're Phil Parker if you're Seth Wallace if you're Reese Morgan or whoever is is advising these plans they know that that's what they all have to look for and I don't think I was state showed a
whole lot I imagine there are p.o. game is going to be a lot different because I don't think they showed hardly any you know I don't I don't call seeing it in that game and uh they're gonna try to get one-on-one matchups on the outside and take their shots because that's the one way where they're gonna be able a flip the field and possibly get points so I would expect a lot of that um and again that's how Iowa is built so I think that's probably the best route there once again no Tyler Brown for Iowa as strong safety he was or expect to strong safety so you're gonna see Anthony Hawkins and I thought Xavier Styles actually played pretty well in relief too so both those guys you could see it's strong safety I think this is a Zach Lutmer game Scott um this is this is a game where Rainer if you look at his stats at Arkansas State he does turn the ball over he's he's um he throws some interceptions I think that is I think he's gonna they're gonna be aggressive with the throw game and I think I was gotta take advantage of that they got to create
some turnovers on the defensive side of the ball you can't let Iowa state play clean turnover free ball and and kind of lock it up and try to take it to a 2017 you know or a 2019 or a 16-13 um you gotta create the shortfields um you know Gernau'ske through that pick last year you need to force that pick this year from Iowa State and turn the turn it into a shortfield turn into a touchdown so to me that's the other key on defense for Iowa's take advantage of Rainer's weakness which he has a propensity to turn it over in his history make him you know throw a wounded duck or try to make a play and throw it a little high over the middle and Lutmer's there to pick it off and and run it back so I think advantage Iowa in that case but you got to make it happen yeah I mean what yeah there's there's a couple thoughts on that and that is you know here he was only eight of 16 he's not a real high percentage passer and when you get in a situation like them where they know that running the ball at will for four yards of carry against Iowa's just probably not in the
cards um then they're gonna take risks and you've got to make sure that you match their risks or you're in position to where you know hey if if they're gonna take that risk we're gonna be in the right spot we know where they're gonna go or um you force them to make the bad pass by whether it's a blitz or you go three three five or you do something hedge him into the pocket um all those things are possible now you know again I think what happens is how Iowa plays on offense will dictate how this game goes on defense as well because if Iowa gets a lead and double bitch lead let's say which they have even in years that they've lost and then also and yeah you know they're trying to make a big plays and then it can go the other way and or in turn into a blow yeah 2024 yeah 13 nothing and take a shot and came back and right there as a pick and then the whole thing flips uh thanks to game day men's health uh I got a chance to to run five miles
of my son the other night uh he's a junior at ADM and it was one of the best feelings in the world uh I can't keep up with him totally at age 52 but I did for a while just having that opportunity to to run with my 16 year old son um who's pretty talented I would say um was a lot of fun and I give game day men's health a lot of credit I mean I couldn't hang with him for the last mile but it was a blast the time I did get to run with him and uh game day men's health and the testosterone replacement therapy that I've been uh taking part of uh part taking part of I guess in the last two plus years has been a god sent in that sense game day has a lot of other services too as you guys know as we tell you hopefully each and every week weight loss ED treatments etc you can get your free consultation uh ASAP at westamoy and anchney north liberty naperville annoy game day men's health dot com um check him out and uh yeah uh we gonna flip the offense when Iowa has the
ball here Scotty uh that's more fun I mean that's also uh we saw we've we barely even touched on Tony Diaz so far but that was another kind of nice revelation the other days uh Tony Diaz had what seven catches for 84 yards probably should have been like 11 catches for about 170s if uh if just three of those passes connect um so uh he looks good uh what if you're if you're Tim Lester if you're the Iowa offense uh what's the game plan I think you run and run and run and run and run some more you know if you have all your offensive lineman in it they're not um you know sitting out after 29 snaps or whatever it is I mean I I we saw the holes against uh northern Illinois I mean they were unbelievable and there's nothing that Iowa state showed me that those wouldn't happen against them either I thought that they played hard I think in the past game that
they run some good stuff I think they have some you know I think Isaac Terrell is a is a really good pass rusher obviously three sacks they had six overall um but you know this was a team if you I don't want to if you take away the the sack yardage I mean you're you're looking at a team that ran for almost 160 yards you know the running game against Iowa state and and I think that's something that you look at and you go okay if they can do that so can we um with the line they have so I think you play everything on your line and just say we're gonna control the tempo we're gonna control the clock we're gonna pound you and we're gonna run it down your whatever and then um once you start to get kind of uncomfortable that's when you start taking your shots with the uh you know with boot action with play action and that's when you're gonna start to see you know my guess is that the safety will start to come down which will enable DJ Venami to get loose and get a
uh a nice 35 yard touchdown pass at some point and um and Tony Diazel you know you want to throw a hit your two and let him have a couple wiggles out of that but I I run the ball 50 times I and I think that they get at five yards six yards a pop is what I think might happen well no LJ Phillips this week for the Hawkeyes so it would you know he would probably have to be a lot of Camarri Molten who didn't play in this side Hawke came a year ago that was a really big factor when they didn't have him um they they had uh Terrell Washington Jr and Xavier Williams were the primary backs last year to start the side Hawke game and they got off the rough start um and uh Jazz Patterson came in a little later gave him a spark but um Garnowski wasn't Garnowski just yet so um it was a rough game he named so I like the plan it didn't work last year um new team obviously but to me you know Iowa State I it seems like the the feedback up there is that you know the defensive
line looked pretty darn good obviously you mentioned the sacks um and as you said they they play hard they play physical they are going to scrap and fight they're gonna be what uh they're not going to be an easy out I don't think it's gonna be as easy as just handed off 50 times personally I think they're gonna have to mix it up I think they're gonna have to loosen them up with uh with some throws and I think Tim Lester will I mean I think that's the one that's the beauty you have with with your personnel finally as you can call those plays and but you know how much is he gonna trust the quarterback that's a big question I have what what risk level will Kirk Ferris tolerate on Saturday because that you don't want to me I don't want to see the restrictor plate on but uh I know Ferris is is gonna want to take it the turnover margin is massive in this series we've seen it so I get it but I but I still want to see the full offense so what do
you think well for sure turnover margin and this is where Kirk it drives people crazy but it's understandable it wins but the risk of her strategy at times just drives you crazy because but I'll say this since 2013 the the winner is 903 who wins the turnover margin so if you win the turnover margin you're not losing you know or mean according to to this you know or you know let them you know so I think overall uh yeah you do not want to have four interceptions in this game and on you know on your offensive side of the ball but at that at that point you also had to play to win once in a while and now I'll say this I think running the ball is a winning strategy uh against the defense now I thought the defensive line and the in the backers too were very aggressive for Iowa State which led to a lot of you know they had 12 TFLs and they were able to stop a lot of plays early and then of course they had six acts which got at least felt like at least three of them
maybe more the quarterback just fell down or it was just there there was no blocker it was like a free rusher who's a free rusher yeah it was unbelievably bad blocking it's like you know do you have a o-line coach you know so uh you know I mean how are things getting measured in practice but anyway so uh but I yeah I want to see the passing game go to and I think you need that you need that to solve the quarterback issue at some point right right but I also but I also think you got to win the game yes absolutely and winning the game is Cade Piper who is the best player on the field the other day and uh Trevor Laugh, Kale Winter you know Layton Jones, Jack Doatsler winning at the point of attack um I think that's a pretty good strategy too because whoever's back they're running the ball with those holes um they're getting five yards of care. It was very very pretty to watch uh the blocking that game you just don't we don't know yet like was Northern Illinois like
the absolute worst team in college football history or was that just a really impressive you know performance by I was offensive on look at those holes by God yeah and hey Kamari Molten uh I thought LJ Phillips might be their leading wrestler this year I mean Brian Molten's leading the big 10 third in the country right now 16.6 per carry and uh he had a little extra care he did I put this one of my articles it looked like Caleb Johnson 2024 out there the way he was running just uh with with uh kind of uh he just hit the timing when he hit the holes that was kind of the the feedback I got from kind of within is that the reason Kamari had so much success and the others didn't was because he knows precisely when to hit the holes he's been at the program now four years and I thought Caleb was really good at that too his junior year Caleb Johnson um you know he knew where the holes were gonna be he hit him at the right time he knew where they were gonna develop
and you saw that with Molten he was kind of gliding through those holes and and pulling away from guys and that's exactly what we saw with Caleb Johnson if you could have put a passing game with that Caleb Johnson run game that's what I was trying to get to right now with these quarterbacks if you could have put a scholarship quarterback in with Caleb Johnson the 10th of the 8 year they might have been better but uh the one area I was most impressed with with with Kamari Molten actually is this vision once he got past the line of scrimmage because the blocks were there but it took cuts cutting of course is the marriage of your eyes and your feet and and he was able to make those moves their correct moves and get going and a couple of them he broke for touchdowns I'm not so sure he does that before you know you always think to get caught before you know or you know and but he was able to break away and and it depends on the defense of course and he was back there but I I thought that was really you know an impressive performance from him and and uh you know I thought some of the backups what ran well I mean Braden Jackson had a touchdown that was called back
Tony Diaz who was good as he was all game long he's had a holding call and I don't think that that would have interrupted the the touchdown run and and he got called back and when the fourth quarter or whatever and I think that's uh that's something that I'm sure eats at him a little bit but overall man um really good stuff out of the running game and I think that's that's probably the biggest concern for Iowa State because not only giving up big yards chunk yards touchdowns it's it's time of possession because again they gave up 37 minutes last week I mean if if Iowa gives up if they give up 37 minutes to Iowa you know that's that's cemetery level I mean because that'll just beat you to a pulp yeah yeah absolutely um red zone offense was um not good obviously for Iowa um interesting to see what wrinkles they have uh pharins was asked and as it on his radio show about that and he kind of like just kind of had like a little we'll see we'll see we'll see we'll
see you just kind of like uh is that gonna say anything you know usually it made me think maybe they got something cooked up Hank Brown said that Wednesday would be the day they would install whatever red zone wrinkles they might have so I'm very curious to see what they do there um is it a wild cat situation uh do you have a running quarterback I mean the I doubt they put Ryan Fitzgerald out there right I mean something like that I don't think that that's probably realistic but you know Hey Klenzki look good running the ball I don't know I'm just curious what it'll just be one of the fun things to watch Saturday because that that is something that I was Iowa was absolutely blessed with last year was a quarterback that could just was just money inside the five and and that rear that was the big boo boo I guess northern Illinois yeah it was and you know how much of that was you know second oh line and things like that but still you you've got a field going against northern Illinois your second oh line is going to punch it in
and it didn't happen and that's disappointing um you know second half it just wasn't that crisp it happens a lot it always seems to happen to Iowa where if they're playing these games the first half they're dominating or the first two two half quarters and then it just kind of you know it's like and it kind of leaves you with this oh it's great but I was kind of disappointed with the ending you know but I think there you know that gives in some ways you you have 40 to nothing win and you have teachable moments so that's not all bad it's it's also things we need to work on because I don't know if there was scored not throwing the interception in the end zone it would have been 47 and nothing if they think it stopped on downs then there would have been you know 54 to nothing or 50 to nothing and in this way all right you know you only had five hundred and seven yards and we only you know ran for what it was like six yeah seven seven
point six yards per carry but you know hey there's still lots of work on here all right prediction time Scott what's uh what's your score prediction for this one I was favored by two touchdowns I think this is a game where Iowa State plays really hard but I think I will play really well and I just I think that there is a big separation today maybe by the end of the year Iowa State will be a better team when then all gels he has Jimmy Rogers is building it his way and but I look at this as a 38 to 13 game for Iowa I think Iowa wins decisively it's just it's the better team I was yesterday as you know we were texting back and forth I watched some of the video I was like you know what maybe you know I'm you know maybe Rainer makes these big places and then I just kind of you know what Minnesota was so much better last year than Iowa State is this year and Iowa ran them out and Iowa was very focused on that game and I see a very focused team now and so I'm going
38 to the 13 but I think it could be even worse wow I think Kinnick Knight is a factor we haven't talked about a lot I think that's going to play in Iowa's hands I think they want seven straight Kinnick Knight games I do have I think the cyclone's come to play I think they come with a chip on their shoulder I think they they got a the better kicker we didn't talk a lot about special teams but they got they got a real good kicker I think he kicks three field goals maybe long ones Iowa gets Iowa gets a plenty of touchdowns though so I got Iowa win in 2018 16 but the cyclone's do cover that's sure yet if it's a 21 16 game and Iowa pulls it away or if it's 28 nine and then Iowa's take it to the T.D. Don't know don't want to predict that far but I'm going to say 28 16 Hawks you know that would have been a nice pickup for Iowa if they could have convinced Kyle Conradery to move over you know because he's certainly kicked enough field goals against the Hawkeyes 54 yard variety to to really you know never have to buy a beer in Ames and
if he moves over to Iowa City maybe you can you know not have to worry about that on the PED Mall exactly yeah all right well it is time to transition into our big 10 portion of the program and it also means it's time for our under pressure segment when you're under pressure you need equipment build to handle it and that is my TM or Piazza Iowa friends from pressure washers to air compressors generators and compressor generator combos might EM builds equipment designed to perform when the pressure is on proudly made in Iowa proudly employ you on for 55 years to learn more about might EM or find a dealer near you visit m itm.com slash Iowa everywhere we appreciate their supportive legends and listeners and Scott under pressure this week is the entire big 10 replay controversy maybe teams underperforming and now some big games this week real big games
for the conference as a whole that's going to get to have playoff implications for the conference itself like you want if you're Iowa you want the conference to be strong you want the conference conference wins to meet something so you got a lot of big games this week you got replay disaster I I think that that was botched I think got I know they've justified it but I still don't buy it I think that I think that game should have been over and Michigan is going to get the win I thought Western Michigan by the way handled it really classy their coach was tremendous we saw him in kinex several years ago right anyway what are your thoughts on the global big 10 having pressure all of a sudden yeah this is an important week this is globally is the most important week of the year for the big 10 because there are eight power five power four conference matchups and as you said I wrote about it earlier this week that all of these games matter when
the CFP committee gets together and they start comparing resumes not only of who is involved and but also your league and your strength of schedule and how your league performs so you know the most important game the biggest game of course is uh texas and in Ohio state uh third straight year that they're playing oh has to be a number one texas be a number four and how that game goes will dictate kind of the narrative of both leagues because if texas wins decisively then the big 10 is playing at a disadvantage and the SEC has the narrative for this year and which could net them one more playoff team you know which hey if you're 10 and two Iowa and you're getting nudged out by 10 and two old miss it it comes back to stuff like this because there aren't any corollaries um Michigan and Oklahoma as we know if we were to do a single team and we can we've done this before with them but um Kyle Whittingham is under pressure big time because they barely beat Wharton Michigan and uh you know if they lose dokelahoma which you know they're what a five
and a half point underdog right now they were a favorite we went in the last week and uh you know so it's flipped around and if they lose and then they also play Iowa in Minnesota who I think is pretty good and then you also throw in um Ohio Ohio state Indiana Oregon Michigan states a rivalry I mean there's that's a tough grind for the Wolverines and and then it's you know and then even the Iowa State game you know I mean obviously right for the Hawkeyes it's it's a vital you know if you lose it you're not going anywhere um but it in the big picture it could be hey Iowa might be 9 and 3 10 and 2 whatever and it might be against the set and BYU or something like that who might be 11 and 1 or 10 and 2 so there's all these factors even going down to Minnesota Mississippi state Duke uh is the HCC champion they're playing in champagne so um you know Wake Forest and Purdue uh produce only a 3.00 dog even at home against Wake Forest Wake
Force 1 9 games last year and um then there's the the Eastern toilet bowl which is Rutgers in Boston College um I don't know they they're in there with they should be in their own conference with Northern Illinois um I mean we could put the Bunder pressure under great Shionno actually that's true we should have done that yeah I mean that was horrific I mean that's what I mean there was not a great week for the big 10 performance wise obviously I mean Michigan Rutgers I mean Oregon had to escape I know you're high on Boise State but still that's not a great sign for Oregon and they got Oklahoma State this week um that's another power power matchup so yeah big 10 is under pressure I think if you're if you're a Hawkeye fan I say you probably got a root for him to beat Oklahoma right Michigan or no what do you with them what do you think what do you think on that I don't think you want him to play well okay all right all right yeah that's fair that's fair you know it's it's kind of weird it's kind of like when the when
there used to be the old ACC Big 10 challenge in basketball it's like you root for your team but you plug your nose doing it you know and it's kind of this way too because you do want your you know if the big 10 successful though I have state wins of Michigan wins if Iowa wins of Oregon wins which Oregon will win I mean I'm no doubt in that and some of the others because Oklahoma State will lost by two touchdowns to Tulsa so I don't see that one being any clink close but um you know that that those bragging rights gives you equity into those conversations and it's like yeah you know it like if Ohio State loses to Texas and then you play Ohio State to a one touchdown game but Ohio State goes nine and three then it's you know how much does that matter it doesn't matter as much as hey they went down to Texas at one and you still only lost by a field goal or you maybe upset them or something then that's completely you know the same thing with Michigan if you go and beat Michigan in Michigan it's a lot bigger deal if they beat Oklahoma you know that's what I helps you out so I mean I think all of that is is is critical now if uh you know if you're Michigan
and and you're you know Kyle winning ham and probably I would even go so far to say Greg Siano who had one of the worst weeks that a coach could ever have I think you're gonna want to flush it don't you yeah and I think if you're in the Iowa City area that means going to Ackerman and as we know on this thing it's time to discover how the plumbing industry can be when you choose a customer first independently owned and operated business like Ackerman Plum Ackerman Plumming Services the Iowa City area and we're thankful for their support here and I will everywhere ledges and listeners and now the instant Iowa Ackerman is only in the residential plumbing business so your calls matter and will be answered in a timely manner so whether it's for a plumbing emergency routine service and maintenance equipment replacement or upgrades like tankless water heaters and water filtration systems call Ackerman so visit ackerman-plumming.com for five star residential plumbing services in the Iowa City region so who uh you know as we talk about these
these big games um who impressed you the most maybe in the big 10 this past week that that you're kind of looking at as a potential uh factor perhaps uh going forward either in the conference or on Iowa schedule I would say the the surprisingly really good team that I thought won't be decent is UCLA because they you know two new coaches and they had to go to Cal which is a rival I'm glad they're playing they need to play um you know it's last year at Calamonia anyway they're they're last ten million dollar payment to the Cal for leaving the league but um you know that was a close game in the fourth quarter it was tied and then they blew you know they rolled up three touchdowns in one decisively I thought that was really impressive I like Bob Chesney as their coach I think he's a guy that's uh that's got some really good things going for him and and so I was pretty impressed with him you know that the first week had such dog games you know and I saw you you're looking at it going you know who do you what do you take it just like Iowa's game of course but um you know what do you
do about Nebraska 49 to 21 well it was kind of close till half time then they blew they rolled and we've seen those games from Iowa too so you don't want to make fun of them or whatever because it's like well you've seen that too and Maryland won 62 to nothing against Hampton but they're terrible they're worse than northern Illinois and Ohio State looked very impressive you know and they could you know but they're playing ball state which isn't anything great to write about but they're still Ohio State and uh you know and then with constant I was prepared to say they looked pretty good for the half and then the second half Notre Dame just said well we're gonna go we're gonna try to go to the ship and you're gonna try to go to the Duke's Mable bowl so you know yeah I know it was I know it was a minor opponent but I thought I thought Minnesota looked pretty good I know we didn't expect much there um I think that's that'll be an interesting game this weekend uh against Mississippi State interesting matchup I mean Fletch doesn't usually
play too many tough opponents so not saying Mississippi State's great but um that's a one and a half point spread that CBS 230 so you can watch that before the Iowa game um yeah uh Michigan state kind of so so I mean but Toledo's not a bad team no they're they're decent you know I mean I thought that they were um you know they they played and then Mac teams could be tricky if you get good Mac team and then you look at Michigan State with a you know new coach you know you know 40 plus new players you know and the fact they still scored 30 points and they won I think is you know good for them it's just you know I thought Matt Campbell's group looked really good against Marshall 45 to nothing I mean Marshall's a perennial bowl team so that that's not bad Indiana um had you know a really you know they were 150 to 16 so not much they could plain about except for they were outgained and they had um you know they were they um see North Texas had more they had
the ball more in the the second third quarter and they did the whole game so I think that's that's also a bit concerning but yeah but I mean obviously the the one that's the biggest concern you know is Michigan not no question about it I mean what's when Michigan beat them and now the second the second discrepancy you know it's real it's it it happens you know they got to defend the Hail Mary better I mean you got to shake those off and do something with it but but that doesn't change to me what I felt about Western Michigan taking it to them and they could not stop them all game I mean and offense they looked inept that you know right now there's there's a chance that this might be Bryce Underwood's last game is the starter you know that's you know for a five star that they paid a lot of money for I mean that's that's kind of uh you know crazy and and I suppose like you know what's going on you know in this world today you know I hope he doesn't but if he does need to sue anybody I guess he can call Schwabel gets in Seabent
you know which is a personal injury powerhouse you can rely on when life takes an unexpected turn for nearly 50 years they've held thousands of clients across the upper Midwest including Minnesota Iowa Wisconsin and the Dakota's recovered compensation after serious injuries and accidents Schwabel gets in Seabent is focused exclusively on personal injury and wrongful death cases with a national reputation for securing substantial settlements and works for their climate clients so whether you're dealing with an injury a serious accident or I'm sure if you even have a case you want experienced attorneys who know exactly what they're doing that's what you're going to get here so log in and then go to www. Schwabel.com that's SCHWEBL or call 612-377-7777 yeah we appreciate uh appreciate their sponsorship ship of our show yeah I think so Michigan is the 11am Fox game five and a half point underdog and socalhoma as you said I think that's the most
interesting game if you're a hawk fan to just tune in and the more we've talked about this the more I think as an Iowa fan I think you just I think you want Michigan to look you're ed full I think you want them to just look like they're they're coming apart um that maybe they've got you know no consistency at quarterback and that you can go into in Arbor 3 and 0 hopefully if you're a hawk you get this win this week against the cyclones and you can go in you know maybe even favored in the big house over there and you know of course they're going to rally the troops um you know if they lose that game but but but you can I don't know that that's where I'm starting to land now even though you want the big 10 to to be good and then you certainly want Ohio State to be Texas if you're a hawk fan I mean because that just that means they're going to come into Kinic probably number one you know in several weeks October 3rd I think you want that you want that vibe so I think that's another big one to root for I think if you're if you're on the Iowa side I don't
know I'm I could go either way I'd Michigan but I'm kind of in the let's see him kind of like implode type thing if you're a hawk fan you know there's not a whole lot of love for other teams in the big 10 from teams in the big 10 except for when you get into bowls playoffs and NCAA tournaments but there will not be a tear shed if Michigan implodes I mean there is some real hatred for Michigan for the Harbaugh error and a counter stallions to you know what's going on and even the other day it's like yeah sure it had to be Michigan to do that um you know why couldn't have been somebody else so I think that they would not shed a tear at all if Michigan falls apart this year and and it goes five and seven for instance or something like that but um you know now I'll I've got a double header this weekend so it's kind of funny I'm going to lower on Friday I'm doing oh really okay yeah how about that but you're coming up that you'll be next to me in
the press box though right I hope yeah yeah yeah I'll be doing all right be doing both um so yeah Friday night um covering Missouri at Kansas so they have a plate in Kansas since 2005 because they played like uh I don't know five or six years in a row they played in um in Kansas City and then then they were off for 15 years while they were pissed at each other when Missouri went to the C.C. and then last year they were in Columbia so I think just to see this I think this that'll be and that that's as heated up rivalry as there is in this country and then I.O.I. was states pretty fierce too so I think that'll be exciting as well should be a great atmosphere uh see you there on Saturday night a lot of big basketball recruits in town as well including uh Caden Dottry the five star point card will be the probably probably the highest I mean you covered Iowa basketball longer and I did even the last two decades it's got to be the highest ranked recruit they've had in for an official visit right has to be I can't imagine Fran had a top five guy
no I mean Adam Woodbury would have been in close but you know he was I think he was like 40 you know or something you know they had some really good ones but they didn't have one in Dunes yeah right yeah so Mark we can't I don't think I don't think Marcus paged it the the visit either so all right all right great show legends and listeners every Thursday here we'll talk to you next Thursday recap in the side-hawk game looking ahead to you and I always a pleasure to team up with Scott Dr. Manusus Chad Lysico saying so long from the Channel C Studios only on Iowa everywhere
