Hour 4: Volpe Recalled and Wilson Not A Captain

No, I mean, the thing with New England, what we saw in the Super Bowl, the offensive line just got beat the hell. Right. By that Seattle front line. Like Drake didn't have a chance in that game. So did they improve it? Is that offensive line going to hold up in this game? Or are we going to see the same thing? Because if it's the same thing, Seattle's going to win going away. You would think. Yeah. But it's, um, it, it should be a lot of fun tonight. NBC 820. Then tomorrow you've got the Australia game, which also I think it's an eight if he starts a little bit later.

1:04Um, and that's the Rams who everybody's picking to win the Super Bowl or at least go to the Super Bowl. Representing the NFC and the 49ers are a playoff team too. So two really good games and by the time we get to Friday, which is less than 48 hours as far as the sort of our show. And it's on, man, we're going to be talking about the jets, talking about the giants. Let's go. It's going to be just a lot of fun to be able to watch football this season. Hopefully, Richard and Manhattan, you're on ESPN, New York. What's up, sir? How's it going? Giant. I thought it was the only time the giant fans didn't go to Connecticut to watch a giant game. Don, your father would know this in a second. The only time that they say it again. Didn't go to Connecticut to watch the game. And by the way, wasn't that far apart? It was the New Haven affiliate and it was north of Stanford. Or you have to go with Stanford and up, Darian and all those Westport straight up. But the only time they didn't go, two days after Kennedy was shot the Sunday. Cardinals, they played a giant at the Yankee Stadium.

2:06Stadium was hit empty. They did not want to watch that game. Fellas, the US Open may have an American. Imagine that an American winning a Grand Slam before a Canadian team wins the Stanley Cup. Finally. That's funny. Right. Now, Nixon was the one that we send at the Blackout rule. He was French with George Allen, 1972. That was unbelievable when he did that. He let the games get on. He loved to have football and him and George Allen were very, very friendly. George and his post-game interview did not mention Elliott Rammels, who came in for him in one big game. He ran home. He should have said, my biggest contribution tonight was allowing Rammels to come in for me and win the game. Well, he did. And my personal opinion is he did. He did. He did. He said, Rammels came in and picked me up. That's right. Yeah. He said he picked me up and with that home run, that was true for us. Okay. That was good for him. Rammels and Garcia, I think are going to turn out to be like Brunson.

3:07I think they're going to be more important moving forward. Fellas, hard dog. Now coming to the giant, he's the only, well, third football coach to come with a championship. First one, of course, was we view bank and then both past self came to the jets. So how about this third? Now, we view bank is the only coach in New York sports history that I know of. The nine teams for images that won a championship with another team and then won with New York. I can't think of anyone else. Maybe you guys can. That's an interesting. I don't think there is. Well, we wasn't NFL champion. Right. I don't know if you're super ball, but yeah, it's who else has come in with a ring on their finger and then one one here because Keenan went to the finals with Philadelphia in Chicago but never won the cup with the Rangers. Right. We don't have a lot of champion. Joey, they are one cups and Larry Robinson's a player, but never won as a coach. Yeah.

4:08We don't have a lot of championships here. So you don't have that, you know, and obviously, just a single, never won with the match. I'm trying to think is there a baseball one? I don't think so. Torrey didn't win. Billy, Billy won as a player and then one of Billy had good teams in before he came to the Yankees. But he never won. Yeah, but he didn't win. But he won as a Yanke. He won as a player. Right. That's the difference is you don't have. You just, you just don't have that, right? Yeah, I'm just trying to think the Mets went through so many different managers, guys. Dave Good. Dave, yeah. Bamberger didn't win in Milwaukee when he came to the Mets. Yeah, I don't think. No, because there's been nobody to win a Super Bowl with two different teams. So you know, that's what happened to the NFL. You don't have to. And the weed worked because he had won the championship in the NFL, but it wasn't a Super Bowl. Right. But in baseball and hockey, no. I mean, no. And Mike Brown went to a final.

5:08Went to a final. Now he wanted championships in assistant coach, but not as a head coach. Not as a head coach. Yeah, he went to a final as a head coach, but he didn't win. Confluent went to a couple of championship games in Jacksonville, but didn't win. Yeah, but he was assistant coach who won. Didn't he didn't see? Wasn't he on one of the staffs of the Super Bowl teams? On the Giants. Yeah, he was the wide receivers coach in 90. So again, a guy who was a coach with a ring assistant coach, but not a head coach. So we've got to be the only one. And he's the answer to the trivia. Yeah. And there's no, there's no hockey guy. No. There's only a little Francis like who you talking about. I guess the, and it's never, I guess Pat Burns had good team. Ever Pat Burns won coach of the year. Every team that he coached, Toronto, Boston and the Canadians, right? Yeah. The one place he didn't win coach of the year was New Jersey. He won the cup. That's right. And one of the things that just pains me is that he burns is 0-3. 0-3. Yeah.

6:09And he passed away from cancer and then he went into the whole family. Like we use SOBs. I know. Like you know, you're going to put him in. Yeah. You could have done it while he was still alive. You could have had a speech. You could have had a moment. Like, you know, it's one thing if they never get it or they get in 30 years later. But like he passed and he was, he was so deserving. Like I said, three times. Yeah. He took that to and that 93 Toronto team was really good and then lost to the Kings in seven games. They gave him a parade in Toronto. I remember that, which is weird. But it is weird. Now the other thing that's kind of weird and I wonder how you feel about this. Well, do we want to pay off the T's first? What was the T's? It was so good. I don't remember. Wow. Brandon Tierney. Oh, that's right. Tweeted. I went a little crazy. I think he's our bringing Volpia. And he texted me. He's like, I'm telling you this is happening. And this is a while ago. And then all of a sudden we started seeing reports coming out saying that that was in fact happening, including I believe you guys said, Jack Curry also confirmed.

7:10Jack Curry confirms. Yeah. So let's make sense. Good job out of Brandon. Yeah. But also for the Yankees in Volpia, this is going to be interesting. It makes sense because you've expanded the roster. Right. I can't believe they don't allow the rosters to be, you know, 40 guys. Nobody was stupid. It's a war of attrition. You're in September. All of a sudden I got 50 guys in the bullpen I can choose from that stupid. It is stupid. Right. You couldn't even fit guys in the dugout. There were so many players called up. So they limited the amount of that you can dress to 28. But you could still expand and bring anybody up without having to send somebody down. So why not bring them up? Right. Breaking, you have to, you have to be able to honor these players when you send them to the minors and they hit and they do their job. You've got to respect them and give them a chance to come up and you need a second basement with jazz being out. And if you missed it with the thumb injury, he's been placed on the I L. 8:14said he's going to miss those 10 days and then he's going to be reevaluated. This guy might be out for the rest of the regular season. Now you got Kaboom Yarrow is going to be in the lineup tonight. But why not? Why not bring them up? You have a second life here. But I wouldn't throw them to the wolves like, you know, like let, let Kaboom Yarrow, Kaboom, like he deserves to play. And so let Kaboom Yarrow go here, but you'll find a place to play Volpi. I don't think there's like, there shouldn't be this, he's automatically now going to be our every day's second basement. I think he's got to learn life as you're in a pinch, right? Right. Then maybe we have to pinch hit whatever it is, but I don't, I think Kaboom Yarrow should still get the opportunity, my opinion. Yeah, but you need another second basement, right? Of course you do. With him being with jazz being out. And I mentioned this before and I have a situation where you play Kaboom Yarrow at third and you put Volpi at second. Like, make man, obviously for his defense, you want him out there.

9:15But if you want to put a little something extra little more athleticism into the lineup, that's what we're going to do. There's no lefty righty with Kaboom Yarrow and Volpi, they're both right handed, but I mentioned it earlier, there is a scenario where in the final week of the season, the Yankees are locked into the first wild card. Yeah. That they can't catch the raise, they can't fall to the second wild card, which would then effectively make maybe the final six, seven games of the season meaningless. Why not have me your second base? Yeah, I mean, that could be an out of pressures kind of off. The games don't mean anything. And just all of a sudden, he continues to cook. Now, he goes from not even to the majors on the playoff roster. Or somebody else gets hurt. I am. Well, anything can happen in that case. Listen, he's not helping the Yankees hitting its grand, but I also don't help him here. I just, you know, again, what happens is in our brains, he's had a really good couple of weeks down in the minors and you bring him up and it's just like, okay, he's fixed. Just make sure. Just ease him in.

Yeah, like, you know, it goes without saying for the guys that are in here, what they bring, the value they bring to this team and what they mean to this team as far as getting this ready to play, getting this ready to practice on a day to day basis. And, and I'm happy to have those guys leading our leading the charge, man.

11:17And I'm always going to be there to play my road to the best of my ability, whatever that is. And I will say that. Gino Smith and Joe Tipman are the offensive captains, but like Aaron Judge, I get it, but it bothers me. I think that's fine. Yeah, I think it's the right thing to do. He acknowledges that this team, it shows we have good leaders here. He loves Tip, like he's somebody that the whole, they just, they respond to him. Gino, I think it's out of respect because he's a veteran. Yeah. He's a quarterback. He's a veteran. They really haven't had somebody like this since, since Rogers, like when it comes to older experience, that kind of thing. So, but I think Garrett handle that really well. No, he did. St. First of all, it's, you get a pitching duel. David Peterson was really good, but Mizorowski is just, he's a show. Yeah, he's incredible. So, it's one one, then you have like, it's three one and then the, again, what the Brewers do, which this could be a really fun series if we get it. Brewers make a comeback. They win the game in 1010. So it was a wild ending, but the key story of this stunt is that the Miz, as they call him, through his, through a hundred miles or more pitch, he has a thousand now this season. Incredible. That's more than some teams. Yes.

13:21There's only four in their careers that have thrown over a thousand pitches at a hundred miles an hour, four players. I guess no one Ryan would be one. No. Really? All those years? Yeah. I'm, come, sorry. Current. Oh, wait, wait. Current. I would say it. I mean, that's clear, because I saw this from, from Jason's start. Okay. So it has to be somebody, you know, that's been around the long. So who do you think is the, is the career leaderboard? For most career pitches at a hundred miles an hour or faster. And I think they've really from here only clocked this currently. Says 2008 to 2025. All right. So 2008 since two thing, because they, they weren't clocking every day. I think they were clocking everything. You know what? He's a, he's a closer role to shaman. Yes. Number one. Yeah. Yeah.

14:21Yeah. Can you believe he's thrown almost four thousand? Well, because he was cranking it up to hundred and four hundred and five, and he's been around forever. So into this season, who do you think as a starting pitcher was the all time leader because that guy is, came into the season sixth on this list of pitchers who have thrown since all these career pitches at a hundred miles an hour faster. And this started back in 2008. So so since so thousand and might not get this, this, this, yeah, this kind of surprised me. I don't, I came into the season the, the all time leader among starting pitches pitchers. Is he still pitching? Yeah. He's hunter green. Okay. No idea right now. He came into the season at 768 of them. Yeah. Reds I think, right? Yeah. Miz is already at a thousand. He's it. No, he's sick. In a season, I mean, Jacob DeGrom came in. He's the second most first starter. Right. DeGroms at three hundred twenty four coming into this season. No, he's, he's a machine. He is on another level. I'm telling you, Milwaukee, we were talking about it off the air.

15:23They might be this year's Carolina Hurricane. Like the team that couldn't get over the hump and then finally do, I'm wondering if this is the brewers year. They're going to finish it, possibly with the best record in baseball, which you give him home field. And you realize I heard Grossa mention this in the morning show when he's phone in for Rick, the least amount of home runs, the major league baseball, the brewers. They're doing this without getting home. Yeah, they, they, well, yeah, they create. Yeah. And I think that those elbow, I'm the postseason. See, I believe that the most dangerous teams, although history tells you, it's still the power teams that win the home run, the teams that hit home runs in the playoffs are the ones that win. Yeah. I understand that. But when you look at the way the Dodgers beat the Yankees by putting the ball in play and they still hit home runs. No, they did. No, they did. They go, and then the, and the brewers still can. Yeah. It's just that we'll see if that ends up being a positive or negative. Let's take a, a quick call before we get out of Dodge Joe and South Carolina. You're on ESPN. Hey, concerning the question of players that came to New York with a ring.

16:26No, it was a man. Managers were ahead of coaches. There was coaches, coaches, how about Gil Hodges? Well, no, he's not because he was in Washington and didn't win. He won as a player. You mean there's been plenty guys. You came in as a coach with a ring. Yeah. Because we've, we've already gone through players who have rings that ended up coaching and Billy Martin. Yeah. It just that in the Weeb you bank did from a stamp. Al Arbor, right? Al Arbor. Didn't he win with Toronto as a player? I you might have. I know. I remember he was a mean piece, but I used the fence. I remember I used the fence. I thought Arbor had a ring. I was funny. I got Larry Robinson and Jacques Lamar was. Well, no, they've been plenty of players that won championships and then came to New York and won as managers or had coaches. Yeah. But there's never been anybody to win a championship in, in some place else, they then come to New York, except we do bank. You already? Well, you're, you're already as a player. Yeah. There's manager of the year of the Marlins and then he won a World Series.

17:28Right. But never is coach remains. But I'm saying they got the player to a coach that won. That was just a little confusing from the caller. Back with you again tomorrow. Three o'clock.
