This is Matt and Marin on ESPN Radio. Matt Jones. Man, this is my month of shine, man. People call me a lot to talk and stuff. They want me to make appearances. You have friends that just call you to talk because it's like people that you have some insight. Like they always think you know something that you can tell them something that they can't look up themselves. Marin Metcalf. We might have fun. If there was like an apple year. You're saying I get the other 11 bucks?

1:03You get all of it really. We just got to make a best supporting actor appearance in February. Matt and Marin on ESPN Radio and on the ESPN app. I'm gonna let you pick the segments in February. I was like, there's a pay bonus. That's what I thought. You keep the segments. I'm just saying you always get on me about the segments. Oh yeah, but give me time and a half or whatever. That's what I want. Well, that's what I want. Not as easy as it looks. Matt, Marin presented by progressive insurance. You know, you were talking about best supporting actor. The images were last night. Did you watch any of the images? The M's last night? I saw the Taylor Swift skits. I saw the Jalen Brunson skits. I didn't watch the actual, I recorded it. So I'd like to record the M's and then go back in. So the big winners were Widows Bay. Okay. Did you see that show?

2:04It's on the Apple TV. It's sort of like a little bit of spooky horror comedy mix together. What is that? Well, it's a spooky horror comedy. Matt, I think that's right. It's spooky horror comedy. It's like about an island. It's supposed to be kind of like Martha's Vineyard, but it's haunted and there's this, there's this mist, but then it's also kind of funny and sexy. And it's a lot of stuff going on. I've only seen one episode. So I can't really say. But the one episode that's always good. Another thing we need to do is Matt's TV and movie reviews. Because if that's how you describe things, I want to, I want to hear your perspective on it. It's got the guy, Matthew Reyes or whatever. What threw me off is he won for best actor. Okay. I'm not the guy. Did you ever see the Americans? Did you ever see that show? I didn't. You don't know who these people are, but he's been in a lot of things and he's American. I thought. Oh. Because he always plays in American, but he's actually Welsh. So he got up to the set the award and he was talking in his regular voice. See?

3:05And his British accent and it threw me off. I don't know if I can ever take him seriously again, because I was like, you don't sound like that. I've seen you in multiple shows, but apparently it was all a ruse and he's an actor and he doesn't actually sound the way I thought he did. Now for how many years have I been telling you about the British coming over and taking these roles, each of us out, but he's got it. You're the address Elba, right? I've been telling you this for years. They're taking our roles and I'm just saying we couldn't do the same thing over there. Are you saying you would like to make acting great again? No, I'm just saying. I don't think you should be able to come over and sound American and then you get a role that was written for the mayor. I think that's just... I don't know if you were taking all these steps. I just the British are taking a lot of our roles. I'm here coming in with the game. And then we're giving them football games. Like that's a lot happening, man. It's a bad mind. It's pissing it by progressive insurance. For great, well if it's week six,

Now if you watch the Texas Ohio State Game on Saturday, it's a great football game, but it has gotten mired in a ton of things that actually have almost nothing to do with happened on the field. Of course there was Ted Cruz making an appearance early in the day on Game Day. There was a picture that a politician in Texas posted with students at the University of Texas, which he took the picture to try to make a political statement, pretty egregious thing by him, and he owes those students an apology. But the bigger story in the world of sports has been what came after the game with Arch Manning, the quarterback at Texas, and ESPN reporter Holly Roe. Arch Manning was asked in the post game press conference.

5:06Actually, I think it was the next day, Marron, right? Wasn't it on Monday, maybe? Yeah. He was asked if he had seen any of the AI videos floating around of his coach, Steve Sarkeesian, and here's what he had to say. I've seen a few AI edits of stuff, but that's about it. I saw AI edit of Sarke's interview from Tom. Don't see Malone. That's what was through, as it go on. It's the fly out. Open Slavin, Holly Roe. Oh my god. That's hilarious. So, the AI video of Holly Roe, our colleague being slapped, he, of course, joked. I think also you will note that the many male reporters that cover Texas, all were laughing in the background multiple times. Then Texas reporter Evan Veeath, I'm going to hope I'm saying that right, he had tweeted that, and he tweeted the video, and then also noted his answer is gold.

6:08So the reporter actually almost doubled down with archmaning in the report. Since then, it obviously went viral all over Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Pretty awful. Before we get into what happened today, let's just talk about the archmaning comment and the reaction of the reporter. I have some strong thoughts, but my run I'll let you go first. It's all terrible and it's all wrong. They put Holly Roe on such a tough position. First off, women in this business face a lot that men in this business just do not. When I talk to the women in this business that I know and I'm friends with, you compare their DMs and their comments to their male colleagues, it's different in the world of sports. Women in this business may start out with a bunch of men who assume they're not qualified to do their jobs, right? And it's wrong and it's false. Then you add something like this on top of it. Holly Roe had a tough job, a situation I've been in where the coach is ready to do an

7:10interview. I don't know if something happened at halftime. It doesn't get to him when he wants what he wants to and then Sark has that response which I didn't think he had to do. But I've been in that situation where you're Holly Roe and you're just waiting for someone to say, hey, now it's time to talk to Steve Sarkisian. And you can't do it. And it's a mess. And now people were blaming her for that. For Archman to do this, it was not only wrong, it was dangerous. You're promoting violence. You're promoting domestic violence whether you realize that or not. When you say, did you see the video and everyone's laughing? Matt, I also want to know who was in that room laughing because those people are also a part of this if they're encouraging something like this. So just a complete miss and I thought it was wrong on Archman as part. Yeah, I mean, there are multiple layers to this. But let's start with this. Arch made a mistake. And to his credit, he owned that mistake today. Today he put out a statement that said in my press conference yesterday, I made an insensitive comment about an AI video. There's nothing funny about it. It's easy to say I didn't mean it, but I know my words and actions were hurtful to a lot

8:12of people. I do not take that lightly and am deeply sorry for it. He goes on to say I specifically want to apologize to Holly Roe. For what she personally has had to deal with because of my comments, I have a ton of respect for her and appreciate her showing me grace in the moment. I apparently talked privately. Holly Roe said she appreciated the apology from Arch and that it was settled in her mind and she wanted to keep the private conversation private. Kudos to Arch for apologizing. Kudos to Holly for listening and taking the apology, which she didn't necessarily have to do. So Arch made a big mistake. I give him credit for the apology. You also have to show grace when people make mistakes. And I think that's important. And I hope he understands and it seems like he does why that was a mistake. I think it's easy for young people sometimes to think the internet is not real. And to some extent, I mean, it's not real. AI videos are not real, but the issue is in this AI world, A, there are people who, I know, people fall for AI videos all the time, but also just because someone's not real,

9:16does not mean it does not have real implication. And when you have a video of a woman getting hit, granted, it was fake. It still insinuates that there's an idea that for somehow it's okay and somehow laughing at that is okay. I blame Arch for making the mistake, but I will give Arch credit for apologizing. I really blame the reporters in the room as much if not more. Those are grown men, right? Most, I bet the women in the room were not laughing. Those are grown men and they know better. And they are almost encouraging the guy with the laughter. If you remember, when he brings up the video at first, they laugh. There could be some plausible deniability there that then they say, why didn't know what video he was talking about? But then he specifically says the video where they're slapping and then they laugh even louder. Now, part of that is, and I've been in these rooms, when you cover a college team, there's a lot of fan reporters. I was one. And you kind of go, they want to be friends with the coach and they want to be friends with

10:16the players. I've done that. And that leads you to kind of think, hey, we're all just joking around. But I think the laughter was probably as bad as the comment. But online, a lot of the discourse has been, oh, why doesn't everybody realize it's just joking around? Heating women is not joking around. They have to deal with it. And I think, and it is a huge problem in society, it does not mean that you don't have a sense of humor. If you acknowledge that jokes and comments and videos can be hurtful, don't laugh about it. Arche gave the right answer today, even though he shouldn't have done it before. But you're comment about our colleagues who are female reporters, etc. I think I didn't even realize when I first started doing this. How much the baseline assumption for some people out there is, well, it's a woman covering sports. They must not know what they're talking about. And they have to overcome that every single day. And you take somebody like Holly Row, who's been doing this a long time and has had to

11:20deal with that forever, she doesn't deserve it. And I thought the best part of Arche's apology was noting that because what happened is the internet started critiquing Holly Row as if she had done something wrong. And that's the problem that women reporters in sports have to deal with. I think it's important to acknowledge it, make people realize it because when you take something as the norm and it is assumed, white male reporters are the norm. And if you're not that, then you have to prove yourself that's not fair. And I think we've seen it like this. I think that's well said. You know, that's why I hope Arche can turn this around because I think he can be an advocate against domestic violence. I think he can be an advocate for the women in the media who face these circumstances and situation. And I hope, you know, going into the spotlight that he's headed to, this is a guy who can make something positive out of this. But I also think he knows better.

12:21And I'm sure when your uncles are painting an Eli and your grandfather is Arche, you know that you're different. Part of this too, Matt, is I don't know if you saw the end of the Texas Ohio State game. And Arche, Manning is running across the field like a little kid at the end of the game. He is hyping up the crowd. I think more than anything, it's probably been a fight for him to want to be one of the guys. Right? Like you know, you're a manning. You know, you've made more money than anybody in NIL history in college football, but just cannot be like everybody else. And I hope this was a reminder, Matt, he's never going to be like everybody else. 99.9% of college football could have done this exact same thing. He wouldn't have been the same store. But when you're Arche Manning, everything is going to be a store and everything is going to be magnified. I appreciate and respect the private apology and the public apology. Now let's see what he does from here because I think he has a chance to say, not only was it wrong, let me learn why it was wrong. So I can encourage others to see it the same way.

13:22And let me also say, I want to give some credit to Evan Veeath, who I don't know. I don't think he's very old. I can't tell. Look, he's a young guy. I think he's a young guy. He was the one that put the video out. He was the one that said the answer is gold. He actually wrote a very good apology today and basically said something to the effect of, you know, I didn't really realize what was happening, but I got caught up in the moment. That's my fault too. Again, the way the incentives are on social media, unfortunately, is if you try to be reasonable, you get shouted down. Right. And so people were shouting at him and saying, why would you apologize? You know what happens when you mess up? You should apologize. You know, early in my career, I was in the internet culture of 2005, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. If you were on the internet back then, you know, like people, it was a different world. People just sort of looked at things and I said stuff over the years that I look back on and kind of cringe sometimes. And I've over the years tried to reach out to people and say, you know what?

14:25That was a mistake. So I do think while Evan and Arch made a mistake, I think it is good that they made those steps and I think we also should be sort of willing to forgive because they're but for the grace of God goes a lot of people. I agree with the grace, you know, again, I want to see what Arch does from here. But let's also remember that Holly Roe, who's one of the nicest human beings in the world. I've met Holly Roe. I've been a side by reporter for ESPN. People have no idea what comes with that and how good she is at her job. And for her to face that, it's just unfair. So I love what Arch said, understanding the damage, but there's a segment of the internet that he activated that he can undo. And that's what these guys have to understand. When you unleash that part of the internet, women in this business, athletes who are women, face something that men will never see. That's exactly right. And Kudos to how Holly Roe handled it as well. She did not have to be as forgiving as she did and she did.

Yes. Yes. The AI video thing is going to be, I mean, it's a huge issue across the world. It's not just in sports, but it is going to show itself in sports as well. It's hard for me to detect it. It's hard for you to detect it. It's going to keep happening. Yes. One person says, why do you think, Matt, you mentioned three political things that came out

19:37of the Texas game? Why do you think that happened? I wonder if it's just a coincidence or is there something about, I don't know, but it is weird that a lot of stuff kind of came out of this one game involving Texas Ohio State. You think it's just a coincidence or is there something about those teams or anything? I mean, Texas kind of like a political hotbed a little bit. I mean, there's a lot going on. So that part didn't surprise me as much. Yeah. And also, you know what's interesting, even though the NFL is bigger than college football, I think, Myron, oddly college football begins cultural conversations sometimes more. And I think it's because these colleges represent the state and sort of represent what the state sort of embodies. So like you look at Texas, there's this idea of like, well, what does the University of Texas represent? Right? I think that's what I think it represents. And I think a lot of times then politics comes into that.

20:38And maybe that's why it came out a lot during this one football game. I always say college football is more connected to fans than I think the NFL, the NFL is bigger, but college football is everywhere. I mean, it's the only sport that's everywhere. And if you NFL games get bigger rating, but if you were to add up all the NFL games on a Sunday, they would not get as many ratings as all of the college football games on a Saturday. It's just we look at them separately, but in any given moment, 30 million people are watching college football on a Saturday. And if you add in the people at the stadium, it's unbelievable how much of the country is focusing on a college football on a Saturday. Yeah. Saturday is a gigantic day across this country. All right. So Myron came up with a segment, it remind everyone what your segment was. My segment is called Let's Make a Trade. It's an incredible game where Matt starts with something. Obviously, the tailgate may be a little bit different.
