FULLTANK 3086: When Life Makes No Sense, God Is Still Working

0:00Just because a piece of your life makes no sense doesn't mean God has stopped building the picture. One day while working on a jigsaw puzzle, I remember getting frustrated because one piece didn't fit. This one piece didn't make sense. This one piece had a different color, this one piece was even ugly. And I told myself perhaps the manufacturer made a mistake. Maybe this doesn't belong to the box. But sure enough, I found its place in the jigsaw puzzle later. It belonged to the box after all. Without that piece, that big picture would not have been complete. Friend, there are events in your life that are so painful they don't make sense. These are like odd pieces in a jigsaw puzzle that doesn't seem to fit.

1:00Your miscarriage by itself makes no sense. Having cancer by itself makes no sense. Being retrenched from your job by itself makes no sense. Your daughter getting pregnant out of wedlock, your son getting into drugs, your child dying of dengue, by itself makes no sense. In your tears, you cry out, God, where are you in my trial? Let me tell you where God is. He's holding the other pieces of the puzzle. Taken in isolation, your trial makes no sense. But Romans 8.28 says that God will work all things, all things, including that trial for your good. Where is God? He is working. He's on his knees, connecting the pieces of your life together

2:03and assembling that jigsaw puzzle. The cross by itself makes no sense. Good Friday by itself makes no sense. The death of Jesus by itself makes no sense. But today's gospel, Jesus says something very powerful. My father is at work until now, so I am at work. Friend, that means God has not stopped moving. Even when life feels confusing, God is still working. Even when your prayers seem unanswered, God is still working. Even when the painful peace in your hand looks dark and ugly, God is still working. The people around Jesus thought God should only work according to their schedule. According to their rules, according to what made sense, but Jesus reveals the bigger truth. The father never stops loving, healing, restoring and saving.

3:05You may not understand the peace you are holding today, but God sees the whole picture. You may be crying over one broken moment, but God is arranging a larger story. You may think heaven is silent, but silence does not mean absence. Delayed does not mean abandonment. Confusion does not mean God is left. My friend, faith is trusting that even when you cannot see the finished puzzle, the hands of God are still at work. That is the message of the cross. On good Friday, it looked like defeat. It looked like a tragedy. It looked like the worst possible ending. But Easter revealed what God was doing all along. So if one piece of your life hurts today, don't conclude that the whole picture is ruined.
