French ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy goes to jail

Today Explains

About this episode

Sarkozy was handed a five-year prison sentence on September 25, 2025, with an order to begin serving time immediately, even though he is appealing the conviction. The crime: A Paris court found him guilty of conspiring to use illegal funds from the government of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 presidential campaign. The judges cited the "exceptional gravity" of the offense, stating that Sarkozy used his position as interior minister to help arrange corruption at the highest level of the state.
