And welcome everybody to another edition of the Rob Life Build Show featuring Rob's revisions. I am your host, I am Rob Lifeeld, and I could not be more excited to get in front of you all the day and talk comic books and pop culture and movies because that's what we're going to do today.

1:00I just got to start out by just thanking you so much for all of the tremendous feedback that you've given the show this year. And I want to tell you how grateful I am that you listen, wherever you listen on Apple, on Spotify, on YouTube, Podbean, I Heart Radio, other platforms. Sometimes you guys tell me, I am literally so grateful. We put this stuff out there and we share it with you and just so excited that it's made a connection. And I have been the fortunate one, as you guys know, with all of these amazing talents who have visited the show, sat down, talked shop with us. And I wasn't kidding, after the Arthur Adams interview, maybe I shared this, maybe I didn't forgive me. I, my wife knew how nervous I was and if this reaches art, I told art. So he's aware. I was so nervous. Our Arthur is a childhood idol of mine in the way that we use people that we look up

2:08to. He was clearly a huge influence, continues to be a huge influence on my work. I think of his work often and how he would approach things because his lines were so commercial and everything he looked, he drew just looked the way I wanted my comic book, Heroes, Villains, all manner of different characters. And up until that, it had been different influences, but he changed it so much. But so being able to talk to him, my wife knew I was so nervous and afterwards I was so relieved, so elated. And you know, and joy later that night was asking me about Arthur's work and why she's met him many times. You had six, seven experiences, dining, great meals, great dinners. Arthur enjoys know how to pick restaurants and they know great menus.

3:09But that was the longest conversation I've ever had with Arthur Adams. The most extended and you know, it's, he's just someone who I admire a great deal. And so my wife, knowing my affection for Arthur asked me, you know, why, why, why, what is it, what is his work that so excites you? And I really just said, I grabbed the Omni bus and I said, babe, Arthur's 1985 is like Michael Jackson's thriller, you know, 83, 84. Arthur's 85, 86 is a magic time for comic fans. We discovered him that extended long shot run that all got released at the same time along with the new mutants and the X-Men and all the covers. So it's just a magic time to revisit and to be able to sit and talk with him. And then Andy Cuber, that is by far and away, the longest conversation I have ever had with one Mr. Andy Cuber. Not the longest conversation I've had with Jeff Low.

4:12We have shoot up three plus hours on the phone with each other before it's just so great that he joined us and just was as raw and honest and just put it all out there. I think there's so much to learn and I just want to tell you the listener that I was inspired as you were. And here's the deal, your interview is only as good as your subject. That's it. You can ask a question, but the more animated, the more engaged and I can't imagine more. So whether it was Seth Green and Hugh who were on a few weeks back, whether it was Michelle Feifei, great talk with Michelle. I also could have gone an extra hour with him. The longest conversation I've had with him was on the show. Arthur Jeff, Andy, I just want to thank him all. I was so inspired by everything that they shared.

5:13And I'm a guy looking for inspiration every day. I'm a guy looking for inspiration when I hit my pages when I'm writing, when I'm drawing. So I have felt your enthusiasm as one of you know that I too have that enthusiasm and I have that just incredible gratefulness gratitude for all the guests. Now we have some some some really exciting interviews coming your way in the next couple of weeks. So stay tuned. We're going to end the year with an absolute bang and hopefully have some some fun shares with you. Today is a catch up episode. It's a little bit of a catch up. The episode is called Doons Day and we're definitely going to get into. I know it's three months away, but we're going to talk about the different. I think approaches optics potential for both movies that I think six months ago we all thought one of them is going to move their date. They're not. This is going to happen and it's going to be great. I think if anything, the couple weeks between Odyssey and Spider-Man have shown us because

6:17if you follow the box office reporting, if you follow the trades, I'm going to talk about that in a second too because there's some some interesting things to say there. If you follow the weekly box office Derby, you understand that pretty much everything that followed Spider-Man after after brand new day came out pretty much every other movie struggled for us the year. They didn't really ascend stuff like my wife and I I loved the end of Oak Street. We loved the dog stars movies that were either critically derided, but really when you catch them both on streaming, you'll be like, wow, these were good movies. I understand the finances of not going to movies. Please do not for one minute believe that I do not understand the finances of waiting for streaming. It's the world we live in now and what I wanted to say about the box office reporting, but

7:19just double down on the fact that Odyssey two weeks later Spider-Man, they ruled the rest of the summer after Spider-Man was released, I saw Odyssey again three times. Having already seen it twice and I was able to all now continue to watch it when it comes on stream, my theatrical experience with the IMAX and with the Odyssey and we're going to come back to this in the Doomsday talk every single episode that I watched I watched in IMAX. I did not see the Odyssey but for an IMAX screening and I think that is a great, a great and a problematic thing for cinemas again given the cost of engaging in that. So again, I understand that the stuff is expensive. It's expensive for my kids. You know, they're old man will spend on them and maybe in Dallas, Texas, my son and his wife can't go see everything IMAX because of the actual absolute cost.

8:22So that's a gift that I can give him when he's out visiting as he did a couple weeks ago and just can we see it and I'm sure. Boom, but I understand the expense and the indulgence of some of the cinematic experiences but really Odyssey and brand new day finished with this six, seven week incredible run. Yes, toy story made a billion dollars. Yes, there were other hits, Devil Wars, Prada and all manner of other hits, the invitation. I loved by Olivia Wilde. I had a great summer. Stuff that maybe didn't succeed, I just didn't see. I never saw him and I did not see super girl. I can't comment on them. I was traveling that they were movies that I missed and I know they're streaming now and I still haven't engaged with them. I don't know that I'll ever engage with them. There's just so much that we're engaged in. My wife and I, we basically have a block, I don't know about you and your family, but from eight to 10, eight to 11, maybe three nights a week we engage and watch shows that we like the agency, lioness, anything in the Sheridan universe right now in Apple dark matter.

9:27Well, you're finishing up silo. I mean, Apple, widow's Bay, your friends in neighbor, Ted Lasso, I mean, Apple takes up so much. Obviously, I'm now down to watching lanterns by myself. I'm watching lanterns by myself, but prior to that, like, House of Dragons. So there's great stuff that we get on our streaming. So that's why in case you're wondering, I haven't gotten around some of the stuff I intend to. I want to. It just hasn't circled around as yet. And the cost of movies is something that we will definitely indulge in as we expand on this. But the one thing that I wanted to say about the cinematic experience and other things that I'm going to say it. And I love as I've told you, I get nothing from, but you'll get smarter if you listen to Matt Belenys, the town podcast or follow and subscribe to his Puck newsletter. This guy has his ear to the ground in Hollywood. I was thrilled to meet him at Cinemacon and tell him which I appreciated his reporting. He used to be a big boss at the Hollywood Reporter.

10:30He has struck out on his own and he has tremendous insights, contacts and scoops shares tremendous information. Lucas Shaw is a guy that I love. He's writes for Bloomberg. I read all of his articles. He covers the entertainment business at large from video games to streaming to box office, to a merger's acquisitions. They had a chat about the yearly wrap up and about the reporting about how this got us back to 2019 in terms of cinema earnings. And they both said that's a load of crap. That's, you know, the earnings are up because the ticket prices are so much, the prices have gone up as they have on everything, on groceries, on gas, on comic books, on all manner of entertainment prices are up. The price is being up and specifically the dominance of IMAX and the prices of those tickets are helping drive the box office.

11:30And look for the theater owners. They don't care whether end of Oak Street is a financial success for Warner Brothers. They just care that it made $25 million that we can drove some new, you know, customers to the window, put them in the seats, they bought some popcorn, some soda, some celebrities. That's what matters to them. Having a lot of product and having enough movies for at least every week is of benefit. And as you go to your local cinema, and I've got to know like a dozen people at my local cinema. So I want the cinema to do well. I want their jobs to be secure from the manager to the assistants to everybody on down. I've done events there. So I'm always rooting for we have a great cinema. It almost went out of business. It opened in November of 2019. So think about that by March five months in. It was it was shuttered because of the pandemic and it was problematic because of the pandemic. And so they made it through the other side and you know, we literally can leave our house and be in our seats in four minutes.

12:31It is that close to our house. So we're of course, I have completely selfish means rooting for this because it's got a really nice I max. So we're always excited that this cinema is going to thrive and it needs more movies. But the movies that do well Odyssey has played in the I max for eight plus weeks. Three of my five screenings I saw it there at my local cinema in that local I max. But the price is being up is why the studios are reporting that the business is back. But it is the admissions that are way down. And if you go by admissions, the amount of people going to the theaters down 33%. They share all of this data on Matthews show and on Luke and in Bloomberg. They they showed the data that attendance people going and buying a ticket.

13:32So think of that 33% down in attendance. But it's up from 2019's box office. I'm not sure the percentage there. It may be up 30%. And so look at that. That's a 63% swing if that number if those numbers hold in regards to lower attendance, but higher. I mean, that's just crazy. And that's because the ticket prices are so expensive now. So why am I bringing this up because we are going to segue into the comic book numbers. And lately when you know it, your host has ruffled the figure the feathers because I told the truth. And the truth is something that this industry is increasingly scared of. They want to hide behind agendas of their own making so that they can manipulate the players within the agenda. They want to there is a group of people who are happy to have this false information. If you read the information about the numbers, why I call it false.

14:33And maybe what I should call it is it's incomplete. It's which makes it false. There are some people who wave it around like, oh my gosh. And people what I want you to hear right now is just the truth. And the truth is there are no official comic book numbers being released for the last six years for the last six years. There was not one window in that last six years since diamond, since DC left diamond. And the prevailing notion of the time I'm going to tell you what the gossip was. I'm going to tell you it was burden up the phone between all freelancers and executives in the comic book business was DC is tired of losing to Marvel in the rankings and in the numbers because those diamond charts when when when 2020 happened, Marvel was having a really strong run, a really great period. The king and black, you know, retailers did very well with the house of X stuff.

15:36DC was struggling. DC was trying to find footing. And what doesn't help your job as an executive, whoever you may be in the executive chain is having to explain to your bosses while you're losing all the time to your cross town rival. Why you can't make more gains while you're slipping. This was the perception. I can't. No one can say for sure until someone comes on and confirms it. But when DC up and left for the brand new upstart and they've been quite an upstart, very successful publishing outlet lunar distribution. They also release all of my books this year that have come out from image young blood bad rock about to release a vangeline. So they carry both image comics and DC comics are there to, you know, big, big DC comics and image comics are there to big offerings and represent a significant share of the market.

16:41Marvel pivoted and went to penguin from that point on no one has shared their numbers. I've shared with you the sales charts and within internal memos. It appears that image is a consistent 15 to 17, 17% of the marketplace. I'm going to tell you as we wrap down the year, I'm going to tell you the story of the year to me is image comics. The book of the year is absolute Batman, but the story of the year is image comics and I'll shed some light on that shortly. I get my rankings and numbers from image. They will release to the people in the company. Hey, you did this. I reported earlier this year. I was a shocked as anybody. Number 100, I'm sorry, young blood number one was the top selling book in image comics. It outsold everything that was released. And that includes transformers, void rivals, all of the books that image comics was releasing

17:46in November of 2025 in May. They released their internal. They made them public. They're the only publisher that does this. DC does not do this. Marvel does not do this. IDW does not do this. Dark horse does not do this. Image comics and it was a decision that they made two years ago and they I was asked to give an opinion on it. Rob, do you think it's a good idea? I wasn't publishing anything with them at the time, but because of my friendships and my network within the company, they wanted to resound and say, hey, Rob, what would you think if we started releasing the rankings? I weighed in with an emphatic. Yes, that's a great idea. The brain trusts behind that, I think, have proven to be extremely pressing. He is呼unizing that kind of humorous. He is an urgent friend of the organization and he's a rookie. He's associated with that move. His nickname when he was a rapper and herist a vegetable writer. He's centered on what 말 looks like and how he origins into a boomerang international show. So he handles that. The youraspit never stops for a long time and that's a lot of work you do, he handles that game very well. You tend to send him super broadly about that. You text him out everywhere and if your work is done in a game, you don't choose to share that do not miss. So he wench movies with me and I tellомill to showுthed that we have a free course

18:47of making certain of exactly what he loves to show other threats, the course of making shirts, heading to make a recommendation. had those rankings released a couple weeks earlier to show how errant the information you were being fed by other websites. How can Youngblood be the number one book from Image Comics and be the number 70 book in all these other stores? Because it doesn't add up because the information is not complete. It is not a an official picture as they would like you to believe it is because when they and this is not a personal gripe. Youngblood number one in November is way in the rear view mirror. This is what have you done for me lately business. I can just bring that up. I never even bothered because of this description. See, I never even bothered to look when image released right before San Diego Comic-Con that Youngblood was the number five book and I've apologized to Robert Kirkman immensely for interrupting. Like I think he would have had number one through seven if Youngblood number five, Youngblood number one hundred hadn't emerged and been the number five book. Again, I didn't even bother because I know that those

19:48lists for me aren't to be taken seriously. Four or five paragraphs in maybe sometimes at the top, depending on who's sharing it very much so. They'll tell you this was cold from 300 stores, 400 stores. I think I've now seen 600 stores. There are over 3,000 comic book stores and let me tell you within that 3,000 that's nine presently third-eye comic book stores. One of the biggest chains. One of the number one I signed at their store this last July it was a monster or I mean it was the last day. It's July almost the first of August but they have nine stores in their area. Nine stores midtown that they're not a part of that group of 300, 400, 600 retailers. Neither is midtown comics. Neither is DC BS. DCBS. These are the top three accounts in comic books. Between those three top dogs you're talking thousands and thousands of comic books sold. They are the premier retailers for a reason.

20:53They move the most product. I don't know who these other stores are. I don't mind looking into it but when you when you're making a list that is representing essentially a third less than a third, you need to get to a thousand accounts to represent a third of the comic book industry. That's what they're basing this on and the other people and then I've seen other talent and wave it around. I mean I don't mean talent that has books in the top five because here's where the massive kind of not disclaimer but a confirmation from me comes in. The top five books are in fact going to be whether it's the 400 or the 600. That is where you're going to get consistency. It is from six to 20 or 60 to 100 on down where you're not going to get anything short of unanimous without an entire an entire participation by

21:58every store. And the people who do these lists have grown very upset with me because I am very publicly in the public town square that is the internet saying that's not these aren't official. Please stop saying these are official. They're not official and reminding you that there aren't any official. When you get box office numbers on a Sunday every studio, Sony, Disney, Lionsgate, Universal Warners, all of them have handed in their numbers to the to the press who then shares them with us. They are the aggregate of every studio. Not one not not from theaters from the studios who have in front of them how their movies do they submit submit. Marvel doesn't submit to the rankings. DC doesn't submit to the rankings. Image dark horse IDW all of it dynamite. No one submits. But these are being waived around. So I have been very vocal in telling you that

23:00there are no official numbers. Yes on every one of these lists. Absolute Batman will be the number one. That is there is no ifs. There is no ands. There is no buts. Everything else after five I am going to wager is inconsistent and varies wildly. And if you're leaving out the thousands and I mean or talking in that 10 of thousands from Midtown DCBS and third eye, then you're getting a warped picture. But of course because I did this, I have invited by speaking. Let me tell you people and you guys know, I'm not going to stop speaking truth. I'm not going to stop sharing with you facts. They can spin and one of them is like, I wanted to bait you to which my answer was at the end of the debate will you be given official numbers from the top three retail accounts much less the publishers? You're not. So why are we debating? What are we debating? How you've created a method that creates

24:06astandings that isn't true? Those lists that I am telling you right now and you can talk to other creators, especially on the Indy scene who know their numbers. Those lists are not a true reflection. And what's what it's done is drive a huge like disease smashing marvel. It's a method that was created to control a narrative that creates clicks and maybe sells some books. Okay. So your box office numbers, your Neilson ratings, they're determined by very consistent plus 50 years testing of box office reporting. You know, the thing with the box office reporting in the 80s, it wasn't front page news.

25:11It was page four, it was page 10 of whatever section of the newspaper you were reading. The trades didn't even have them on the front page. Now the business of box office and how the box office determines how we view the quality of the film. Like I said, end of Oak Street, I'd put as a top top five movie that I saw this summer. I was extremely engaged. I'll tell you, I listened to two critics who told me just as several people with the Odyssey said, so when it comes to Tom Holland or Yoon McGregor in end of Oak Street, I heard so many people say, Tom Holland totally takes me out of this picture. Yoon McGregor totally takes me out of this picture and they ironically they both feature great performances from Anne Hathaway, which is noted in some of these critiques. I went into both and let me tell you something. Every time I see the Odyssey, I think Tom Holland's maybe the second best performance in the movie, he's fantastic. It's very important

26:12his role and that we buy into his role. I think people weren't just used to seeing him in any other significant role outside of Spider-Man. They had to adjust to seeing somebody who they've seen on the red carpets with Zendaya and in a Marvel costume and swinging over the manhattan skyline. They had to adjust seeing him in you know formal gowns, men's dresses, skirts, sandals, capes, his performance is great. Yoon McGregor's performance in end of Oak Street is one that I enjoy very much but I was told that it was terrible. He took takes me out of the movie. He didn't take me out of the movie one Iota but we are meant to look poorly at that movie because it didn't perform at the box office. I've never seen more people who ran up to bat to scream that Ridley Scott had a flop. Dog stars is a flop. Well, if it's being released in August, it's going to struggle

27:17traditionally only a very few, I'd say once every 10 years, is there an August break out last year, it happened to be weapons. What was the connective tissue between weapons and dog shores, Josh Brolin. So maybe they thought, well, we can pull this off because we've got Josh, Josh was in a big hit. When you see dog stars on your streaming, you're going to enjoy it. It's a good little apocalyptic yarn but it doesn't rewrite the playbook. It's just a fun adventure. It's what I was looking to do when I went and saw it and sat down in the theater with my wife for two hours and we enjoyed it. Everybody, everybody brings their A game. I thought all the performances are great. There's a fun third act that goes a little crazy off the rails like escalates the movie that I very much enjoyed but it is flop, flop, flop was all you read. It was like I've never seen so many people want to in my opinion, bury somebody like Ridley Scott. The week after another movie came out by a filmmaker I totally dig Adam Wiengart and his King Kong movies, the guest. I've seen everything

28:21Adam's done. On slot, did it make four million? It was a bigger failure than dog stars made far less money and you could say but it didn't cost as much. Okay, so what did it earn at the box office? How much of a movie costs? I've been told this. It doesn't matter what the fantastic four cost. It made this much money at the box. I was kind of dead. So I agree one cost significantly more but the one that followed did significantly worse in terms of earning, getting audience attention, putting butts in seats and nobody called it a flop. Nobody, they very much wanted to come after Ridley Scott. So the media will determine success and failure based on box office performance and it is now we get that we get the numbers on a Thursday night and suddenly it's like uh oh uh oh this movie's in trouble. Uh oh uh oh this movie's awesome. I want to be a part of it and so much

29:27FOMO does drive. Once the Odyssey became an event picture that everyone was talking about, once Spider-Man became an event picture. I mean we're talking about I think ultimately earnings that will land with that 1.8 billion for Odyssey when the summer began people thought it was going to make 850 million. It would struggle to make what Oppenheimer made. Boom blows past blows past Oppenheimer. But no one no one had Spider-Man making more than a billion dollars. No like like a billion six seven eight. No one saw Spider-Man. No one that I read, not the LA Times in New York Times, none of the prognosticators had Spider-Man doing I think it's a 2.4 billion dollars today. It's knocking on the door or it already is the third best biggest movie of all time. It took it took the record away from Star Wars Force Awakens as the number one domestic earner. I mean you can tell me that movie is a 10. I'm not going to tell you it's not. If it checked all your boxes and clearly it checked a lot of boxes. But not one person prior to release

30:33saw it doing this. And Spider-Man and Batman I think both are on a huge glow up because so much of what is driving pop culture right now is kids born after the year 2000. Travis Kelsey talked about it on his recent new heights that tons of his teammates are born after 2000. And I'm like well now you're talking about the life of the family. And now you're talking about 20 somethings and he talks about how he's the old man. Tom Cruzy was interviewing laughed at that given that Tom is in his 60s laughing that a 36 year old man would call him in the old man. And then Jason Kelsey and Travis Kelsey look you know explain to Tom Dylan 36 years old and the NFL is old. You are on the older end of the of the of the age group. And and Travis was joking about how you know so many of his 20 something teammates are just he's experiencing that they don't have the same appreciation for certain cultures given his agent what he appreciated. But with Spider-Man and Batman to these kids born after 2000. They are Spider-Man and Batman are there one A and

31:38there one B and they're only going to continue to become important. They've been the cartoons, toys, the games that they've been playing for 25 years. I heard one podcast or talk of her sons. I think they're four and two and how much they love Spider-Man. So this is not going anywhere. This is only going to increase. All of the my press has been full of Robert Pattinson and Robert Pattinson and the anticipation for the second Batman movie that that he's going to be starring in. And I think that thing is going to track the same way and go to two billion dollars in the same way that the Tom Holland brand new day Spider-Man movie did. So we are watching the culture shift. We are watching tastes change and foundations pay off. You know you first you know you lay down the track. Batman begins a couple hundred million suddenly becomes a billion dollars with dark night and then still goes higher with Bane. A lot of crazy stuff going on.

32:41Comic book numbers just those aren't real. Those aren't those aren't official charts. They can wiggle and take averages from as many stores they possibly can but they're leaving out the top accounts so you're not getting complete picture and you're not getting them from the publisher at all. Not a single not a single publisher is releasing their numbers. When one gentleman recently said to me I could tell everybody I had the number one comic book in the country and no one could tell me differently who's to show me a number that disputes it. That that is some that is some food for thought right there when that was said to me I definitely that was a hmm that that that that was a gotcha moment when he when he threw that back on me. They tried to hack me about it did hack me twenty eleven years ago and you just never know as much you know protection as you put in that stuff. I've been walking back to my hotel room in recent summers at 1230 from San Diego Comic Con breaking you know everybody went to their separate hotels and I'm going over the bridge and I get is this you trying to access your you know wow this guy this guy thinks I'm asleep I hit the no you know I am not and they're like thank you we will take you know the appropriate action. 41:12and violence and what was seemingly insurmountable odds and as everything deni does it it was just shot impeccably and it looked fantastic he is an incredible director with an incredible eye and works with great a great a great team of technicians and cinematographers to make this stuff happen dune 3 uh dune 2 obviously had a big glow up from dune 1 and again you get back to dune 1 was really released in the thick of the of what you call it the thick of uh the the pandemic so it was only kind of a given uh that that dune 2 would come out and do it better better because the people who liked dune 1 were very vocal about it and again we got a foundational platform that's online it's streaming it's building our interest dune 2 did 715 million worldwide a huge um you know glow up

42:16and uh i believe that that number will hit over a billion this time with dune 3 i believe you're gonna see a one a two a three glow up like you did with dark night and some of that is going to become bbb is a part of bbb it's going to come into play with the cheat code that i max has become because i max 1000% is a cheat code it's a twenty six dollar uh charge to go see the i max here in orange county southern California that's pretty consistent whether it's the regal chain the amc chain um the the what what they call the century stadium is a different chain for us out of here dune dune's day uh dune's day is is obviously coming when these these movies are released and between the previews and all the other different you know uh stunts that they're going to uh provide uh you know i i truly believe like whatever the release dates on

44:34christopher nolan and deni i did not ask deni for a picture he's a very kind man i had been to the i max 70 millimeter theater uh a a a press screening where i sat near him uh a week before the audacity released and uh it was they had like a little lunch and afterwards in the theater and that's where i was able to speak with deni and his wife and uh of course just share my enthusiasm and how much i love the way he utilizes josh brolin but the ooze in the aes continued in a room full of giant filmmakers whether it was spikely whether it was frances for copula whether it was steven spielberg frank marshal jorge lucas himself christopher nolan robert regez deni demands uh much respect and much uh he he is revered i think people believe this guy

51:05so then you've got timothy shallamy who truly hasn't failed yet no matter how many people want to see him fail and again another guy you you saw after he did not uh win the oscar from art supreme there were all these people who said he needs to go away he needs to go away and he showed up i think two weeks later with the trailer for dune and started promoting that and then then we saw him reading for the nicks and he wasn't going away and he went to all the home games and you got to just completely admire that guy's dedication to his favorite NBA you know basketball team and uh no matter how many people want to throw like negatives on him he just continues to succeed he has impeccable taste and uh my daughter and all her friends will spend money on robber patents and zendaya and timothy shall me if it was just them that's it that's the the bill support now we got zendaya i'm sorry now we got anitail anitailer joy uh now we have Florence pew uh oh also Rebecca Ferguson and Jason mamoa this thing is stacked and i'm going to

54:19super in demand super popular cast the reporting from wall street journal has dune has already made ten million dollars in advance ticket sales with three months to go dune's day has fifty five million dollars in advance ticket sales you know again quite quite the disparity there but the cheat code belongs to dune with their commitment for at least three weeks maybe four of the iMac screens and you saw how iMac's favored Christopher Nolan and that relationship and the reason the cheat code is on their side is because they always had this date marvel kept moving them by the time they moved iMacs would not play ball and would and and squarely kept the screens for dune and Warner brothers filmmakers matter to iMacs and if you didn't know that you weren't paying attention to filmmakers matter and dune is again seen along with Christopher's two guys that are pushing cinema and that

55:24the cine files the the diehard cine files the same ones who showed up and powered ppt anderson paul tomas anderson one battle after another last year the cine files know they're the ones who are you know elevating cragger and couglar and all of the different names that are kind of that they're the ones that that got behind the breakout hits between back room and obsession and cine files i have family members who are cine files neff use nieces cousins this is matter to them these names matter to them dune is going to have a strong showing for many people he will be a first purchase and for families and kids and diehard marvels they will be the first purchase but the iMac screens are in his favor and again iMacs ticket is double now marvel has it's quite it's widely derided mocked that the whatever that they're calling their special screens why are i not

1:01:53of these different characters but the contrast in in i'm just seeing this in red carpets because that's what we're gonna see that's how the press gets out there that's how these junkets get um promoted as they travel the world and go to you know australia to england to paris uh you know to to to china to japan it's going to be this ultra young cast in contrast with these guys who are now in their forties in their fifties and i'm i'm a forty sorry not forty uh i'm i'm a fifty year old so i root for for my own kind but there's a contrast there and here's what i think i think most no actually you know what i don't think the entirety of the audience for doomsday will end up seeing doon and i don't believe the entirety of the audience for doon will end up seeing doomsday they are both gonna have different uh audiences that are driving their engagement i i believe doon gets sci-fi gets deni fans and most certainly uh gets the young women of whom again

1:06:14he is up there in the autores now and i i believe with with with naruto and uh in this hwai 50 and everything else that he produces i think he's definitely going to obviously he produced the wonder man show that everyone really loved that marvel hold the plug on and then there's the home mahersella mahersella all the blade thing that has been blowing up all morning prior to me getting on here so so like when it comes to marvel and the tv division very strange very strange things are happening in the film division i think you know it basically just cleared out and said the super duper team up multi-verse adventures is what we're going to go on in on but i'm just not sure from what i've seen that there's a lot of uh craft cinematic craft uh signs of autores and it's not just me go listen to all of the debarious different uh podcasts uh that that that discuss film in in the movie business uh

1:07:17the russos are very much extensions of fai ge in in the way he clearly likes to see things they uh they craft a a a movie that disney feels very comfortable in them being able to sell and buy sell and you've seen it all as well uh we at four and five months out we were seeing all the licensing for doomsday the pops the action figures it's very very commonplace when i was in cinemacon in 2024 months before deadpoblvaring deadpoblvaring licensing was everywhere i knew all of the toys the action figures the popcorn buckets uh the plushies uh the the interactive toys the video games everything that was going to feature them so licensing is a giant giant arm of uh of these which is always you know built into the cake and doomsday i have no doubt is going to make a tremendous amount of money i'm not sure it's going to make the spider man dollars uh that we just

1:08:20saw going back to the fact that entering the year 2000 dc's biggest product was just asleep marvels was x-men by 2006 uh dc's biggest product was batman and marvels bit biggest product was the avengers in 2026 dc's biggest product is batman and marvels bit biggest product is spider man marvel has seen a uh a definite shift in in which of their icons has received the glow up while dc has just doubled down on its batman batman batman almost every giant project of the last 20 plus years is something batman related really jiff and jim got it started again with hush uh you know maybe it was frank millers dark night sequel um then obviously you you had the the success of the books coming out of the 52 then you had uh the the i mean what we talked about

1:09:20with Andy qubert the uh master race the dark night three was a giant huge initiative hans of i mean so much spending and marketing uh to to to to put that book uh at top of mind for everybody in the business and it's lived off lived on incredible collections and additions and then now with absolute batman sitting in that very uh inviable batman chair that that has been a staple for 20 years and i think it was in 204 because the whole you know when they blew the gates when they blew the bridges off gothum the no man's land storyline uh in the of the early 2000s that stuff wasn't really you know moving a tremendous amount of dc product it was very much grant morrison uh when he launched justice league alongside hower porter uh that that became the busy busy book and that carried into the 2000s what uh what what what changed was the heavy emphasis

1:10:20on all things batman whether it was frank miller whether it was jimmy later day fence obviously the 52 uh with Tony ganyl with with Scott Snyder then master race and now uh Snyder and dragaada on on on absolute batman which once again as i said at the top of the show is the top book of the year it is uh brought tremendous earnings for comic stores uh which they will all to a person tell you that absolute batman has created a curiosity and brought in younger uh younger readers as we get on in further episodes i will double down on why image comics is the story because the uh huge presence of robber curtmans invincible cartoon and the collections and the curiosity and the success of battle beast robber its curation uh of the hasbro licenses whether it's transformers whether it's gio or now uh rom mask the breakout of dork and the incoming what

1:11:27i believe to be a massive uh gigantic hit that's going to be chain cata chain cata the byproduct of the imagination writing styleings illustration storytelling of ganyl orn janssen is going to be the talk of our industry from november to december alongside as i've said to you in previous shows do not miss out on those midnight marvels number ones it is the right time it is the right place uh absolute batman uh has been so abundantly dominant over these last 12 16 months it's almost drowned out everything else other than the breakouts from image comics and marvel has been trying to refine their footing a retailer actually multiple retailers call me i mentioned on this show that marvel fans want a marvel book they can rally around their coming these are them at least they tried the spider man stuff looks

1:12:30incredible to me going back to the spider man is as big as he's ever been globally world wide his appeal this uh midnight spider man is going to be a big giant hit the covers look great uh the the interior skew very much manga i think marvel has a monster hit on their hands i what when they do it right i will give the flowers fantasy for i think he's going to be completely just critically adored i don't know what's going on with the x-men it's going to be the hardest one to break out because the x-men with vampires has been done as we've covered here on the show multiple times before as featured storylines as annuals as specials but uh what we'll see how that goes spider man though without a doubt will be the breakout take that all the way to the bank get on that i've reserved my copies yes i like comic books i want to see comic books succeed succeed for the last two years marvel has been completely dealt out of the deck they they they they were brought to their knees humble humiliated

1:13:32the three d's are gone david david and dan i called it here two years ago they're all gone and you're like but Rob they're in their seats right now they're on their way out their exit strategies have been determined their endates are circle on a calendar this time next year uh they are all no longer there and it starts with the announcement that they're all being given their walking papers david david and dan gonzo uh they presided over uh but the hubris between all three of these guys is incredible and they just refused and some of you guys want me to dig in on cb or other editors those three guys it was 15 years ago when all you've heard robber kirkman talk about the writers rooms you've heard jeff lobe talk about the writers rooms and how they were run in the power and the

1:14:35uh the the call that went around the room maybe around 2010 was that david and david were joining dan in all of the pitches for new books guy who heads finance and guy who heads uh business affairs finance and the guy who heads sales and marketing would weigh in on thumbs up thumbs down on new pitches not creatives can i sell it can i not sell it well as you know the biggest hits that came out of marvel in the last 50 years frank miller and john burn and christ klerman on x-men were from books that were by monthly that were low in sales had i pitched a book about a group of characters that no one ever heard about all of this guy named cable and it's got i mean i pitched to my editor but now i'm in a room with everybody else and i have to pitch to the business affairs people and to the marketing department and they're going to make a snap judgment yes or no i can sell it

1:15:38this place was run bass aqua word with tremendous hubris and what i as i as i've said and i'm gonna double down david david and dan got used to no no no they intimidated everybody for over a decade to say yes okay yes okay submit submit and then the tables were turned in it's like no thanks no thanks no thanks no thanks you heard jeff lobe on the show say he's not gonna marvel is not excuse me marvel is not changing their pay structure he brought it up it's in that it's embedded in that interview he talked about how troubling it is to him and other freelancers that marvel and in jim's words they don't have to do better than dc just do dc dc does have a better royalty uh structured payout uh uh uh program that is uh well known within the industry i'm going to end today by saying something if you're currently being published uh not about to be published not
