Why are you still here? Your shift has ended, Michael Mackie. Your duties have ended. Your services have been performed. But there's spillover and... I didn't want to leave. Are you referring to yourself as spillover? Yes, spillover. You are spillover. There's spillover. So I wanted to just hang out with you nerds because... It's so glad. I know. Number one, I hope it rains today. And number two, I can't stop watching tennis.
How are you? You are watching tennis out of the corner of your eye. And by out of the corner of your eye, I mean, you are not looking at me at all. You're full on watching tennis. Tell you, why do they insist on putting these matches during the day? Well, they don't. They play them at night too late at night. Three in the morning, Michael, I tried to stay up. I made it to about 11 p.m. watching that sexy spaniard. Which one? Oh, he was a sexy spaniard. Versing our American... Ow, yes. Yeah, it looks like Alcatraz. Look, versus our American player. I fell asleep with the TV on around 1130 thinking, oh, how long can this go on? The answer is 3 a.m. It went on until 3 a.m. He's the one who likes to just gratuitously for no reason lift his shirt up and like, wipe his brow and... Tiss is a sweat adventure. You're everyone of free, free show. It's thirst trap on the court. Now, you're supposed to be watching the play on the court, Michael. No, I'm not. Okay, but Sam, I don't, do you know who we obsess about? We, I should not say that backtrack.
I obsess over the 15-year-old ballboys and ballgirls who are supposed to... Remember when we were in elementary school, you would play that game tree and you would just freeze and you'd have to be like a tree? Have you watched the 15-year-old ballboys and ballgirl trying so hard to blend in to the back of the mat? They try so hard. And then when they offer up a tennis ball to one of the pros, do not look them in the eye. Do not look that pro in the eye. They stand there frozen. You got to see it to believe it. With two balls in it. Sure, and like deer in headlights terrified. And so I look this up last night, thousands of children vie every year to be there. They're one of the only people that's not a pro or a coach allowed on the court. And it's like... I've never seen you so excited. You're standing up. I'm in defensive position showing how, how quiet I would be a horrible ball retrieval. You're saying? Yes, you were. I mean, like, hello, you sexy spaniard.
What are you doing? You got your balls right here. OK. Sometimes they pose like a tree and sometimes they trip and face plant into the metal wall. And sometimes they face. And they're afraid. They are not allowed breaks. Sam, can you get the video off YouTube? Oh, God, poor child. So he goes and he throws like four balls at the player. Whoever I have no idea who these people are. And he's looking at one. He doesn't like it for whatever. There must have been a scuff. No, the pros look at him and throw him back if they don't want that ball. And they bat him back or hit him, racket them back or whatever you call it. And this poor kid ends up with two balls. Too many. And then runs to the back wall. The problem is that this pro tennis players get ready to serve. And the kid face plants into the wall. Face plant. Listen, you can hear it. Yes. Ball one, ball two. Oh, that was so quiet.
Oh, that was yeah. That's the one we watch. He goes, bam! Crablam! Just like I'm so sorry someone helped that poor child. It was like a Batman sound effect. And I'm like, I'm so glad that kid face planted into the wall. Finally, this game is interesting to me. You are not allowed to say that because I have come around to watching soccer. And I am here to tell you, not because of me. It, it, Scott, it is so exciting. And we watch the women. We watch the men. I, I don't understand the coaches are now all wearing ball caps that say things like farmers dog food. And we were talking about this. You might know Michael. How much are they being paid? All of the money. To sit there wearing matching ball caps that say farmers dog. That's it. That's it. And the other day, some of the coach all wearing Carvana. Do you honestly think any of those people have ever purchased a car? Absolutely not. They might get the farmers dog because that's expensive.
Do you think it's like $100,000? Easily. To sit, just, you're going to be sitting there anyway. Yeah. Watching your player that you coach here put on a hat that says data and parks, whatever, just throwing that out. Just happy to find out that the coaches were actually the ones getting paid. I would have assumed that US tennis would have taken in all that money. No, no, no, no. I, these are all side. I read. I. It's five o'clock. Your employees are hitting home. I did a deep dive. They're all side gags. Speaking of side gags, why are you here? I'm so happy you are. Because it was a year ago this week. A year ago today. Today that you have four minutes was released.
Oh, it's the anniversary congratulations. Well, today the audiobook comes out starring one Dana Wright and Michael Mackie. Stop it. Am I prominently displayed? Have you seen your names are prominently displayed on Audible, on Amazon? Stop it. Yes. I had so much fun reading that. And by the way, Scott, and I am not even mildly kidding, I almost did the entire thing in one take. We re-did one of the sentences. And I was like, I can stick around and do more. You liked it. I haven't heard it. I don't. I'm tired. My Cindy Wilson of the B-52s, read by Dana Wright. On Valentine's Day, 1977, my life changed forever. That was the night my brother and I and three other deadbeats performed for the very first time, simply for the fun of amusing ourselves and a living room full of friends who had all gathered for a birthday party. The whole thing had started five months earlier after a round of exotic drinks at a local
Chinese restaurant. That led to a wild, slightly inebriated jam session. It was such a hoot that we decided to do it at the upcoming party. Needing a name, we called ourselves the B-52s. If someone had told me that at that party, I would launch a long career in music and also meet my future husband, another story all together. I would have asked them what they were smoking and did they have any more of it. But the band took flight and after almost five decades, we're still doing it, spreading danceable fun far and wide. Throughout my years as a performer, I've been interviewed more times than I can count. One thing that I'm going through early on. That is definitely Dana's voice. What's weird is I'm reading as if I am Cindy from the B-52s, which I am not. Does she talk like that? No. But Dana did try to do with a subtle Southern accent and I went, no. Can I scream, Ten Roof, rusted at the end?
No. And then we have a clip from Radio Gaga in this chapter 39. You guys have your own chapter. Let me hear it. Ten years ago, the show was an up and coming success story. From day one, it was this intoxicating blend of pop culture, water cooler fair and local newsy stories that typically had folks in a dither. Then the show took off. I mean, we are talking Stratus Theoric ratings. The weirdly chaotic chemistry and ping pong banter between Dana and Parks was infectious. Everyone religiously started tuning in. Talk about birds of a feather. She's like a lunatic magpie chattering away and cackling. He's like a crabby Sam Eagle from the Muppets. Kindly aware, astute and not going to take crap from anyone. This when Parks foolishly asked me to sub for Dana, I was immediately intimidated. I'm not intimidating. Parks yelled at me when I announced my hesitation.
During my initial appearance on the show, I couldn't get a word in edgewise. I stammered, I stuttered. Okay. Yeah, but a complete sentence. And that wasn't in the cards. This is so approximately 20 minutes of me, meekly talking into the microphone. Scott lambasted me during the show's first commercial break. Look, Mackie, I brought you in here to talk and you've done anything but he said with lock jaw. So chime in or else I mean it. Either start talking or get out. That's a true story. That's you are mean. That is a true story. I think I embellished a little bit for the audiobook, but that is a true story. Well, that was a tiny bit of dramatic fire, but he did yell at me and I wanted to beat him to death with the microphone. I didn't even know him. That's when you and I were besties. Oh, I love him. And I was just randomly filling in. Maybe one year that is amazing. Thank you. What is one your diamond? I don't know, maybe paper. I believe it's wood. I believe it's wood. So okay. High five. Yes, it's the high five anniversary.
Tis the high five. And where can people find your audiobook? The audiobooks that just came out today is on Audible and Amazon and soon on Apple. And I'm so excited. Thank you guys for having me. Congratulations. You really didn't have a choice. I was going to be in here whether you like it. We know. Get out. Get out. Get out. He'll be back tomorrow at 10 o'clock. Lavi out. Here on KMVZ.
