I have been so excited for this since we first saw this viral video. They were in people magazine Scott. I'm just going to read a little bit and then we are going to get to coach and the players who helped their teammate Taylor ride his first bike. College basketball team teaches freshmen how to ride a bike in heartwarming team bonding moment. Taylor Frost's teammates at Fort Scott Community College rallied around him for a milestone his mom said she'd tried four years to help
him reach. A Kansas college basketball team turned a routine practice day into an unforgettable milestone for one freshman, helping him learn how to ride a bike for the very first time. The moment was shared by Taylor Frost's mother and verified by story full and shows teammates at Fort Scott jogging alongside as he balances pedals and then finally takes off on his own and you can hear the screams from the players and if you can play it, listen. And there he goes, taking off and just like proud parents with a child, they are so excited and I reached out to their coach coach Matt Glover who agreed to connect us with some of the teammates and students involved and coach thank you so much for your time. Yeah, thanks for having us.
This was your idea. When did you first figure out that Taylor had not checked this off his life box and why did you decide to make this a team building activity? Yeah, so in a roundabout way, we have a group chat with the team where we communicate our schedule, the updates, anything that we need to talk about. So anyway, there was one of the players they were at lunch and he sent a little video in the group chat and said, hey Taylor, I've never learned how to ride a bike, you know, can we ride a bike? We got to teach him. And so a couple days had passed and didn't really think much of it and we had been going through a little stretch where, you know, we had a couple losses and thought we needed to shake it up a little bit and so we went in for film session, we got done watching our film, had the bike out in the foyer, assistant Dom Booty, Wayne Grabbit, ran out while we were in film, put it kind of in the back of the arena and so you could see
it from the window, from where we were watching film and I said, hey Taylor, can you go check outside, see what's out there, he saw the bike and he said a bike and the guys went nuts in there and so so let's go do this. So we went out in the parking lot and you know, just like you were saying, it was slowly the communication in different ways and trying to teach him and, you know, just letting the guys take that on and so, you know, we're trying to go about how our communication is important and the different ways everybody might take it, their communication, whether it be teaching them, showing him how to ride or like getting on the bike, pedaling, showing him how to pedal, guys just verbally telling him how to do it and so it was funny to watch from the start. Well coach, I did a little bit of a deep dive on you, I know you have children. This had to have been incredibly nerve-racking because I've coached for decades,
not at the collegial level, but these kids kind of become your own in a way. You had to be horribly nervous. That's the staple of how we do our recruiting is if I would not want them around my three little girls, then they wouldn't really be here and so top to bottom. They're always around and you know, they hang out with them. So seeing that you get the nail on the head, it was like a just a proud parent moment. Seeing them take off and how everybody just ride around them and yeah, it came together for the same common goal that you got outside themselves. So it was very nerve-racking. Coach, I know you have some of the players there with you right now, including Taylor, who was the one on the bike with his teammates running by him. Can you put him on the phone for us? Yes, he's right here. Hey, Taylor. Oh my gosh, congratulations. We're so proud of you, but are you surprised this went viral? I mean, everyone is talking about your feet. It's just heartwarming.
Yeah, I was surprised too. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. So I was a shot when I saw how viral it went. Hi, I'm PJ vote and I want to tell you about my podcast search engine. We try to make sense of the world. One question at a time. No question too big, no question too small. We will even answer your questions if you send them in. Stuff like, what happens when a cemetery goes out of business? What should we do about teens using AI to do their homework? Who buys luggage at the airport luggage store? Follow and listen to search engine in partnership with Odyssey, wherever you get your podcasts. Were you nervous? Yeah, I was nervous. It was my first time riding a bike. So what is this done and meant for just the team and the team psyche and it just looks like you boys are so close and their joy, Taylor, when you take off for the first time, we all shared in that and just loved it. All my takes, that was, you know, that was in the video,
we are already close. So like, if they feel good for them to be on my side, support me and like ask me up and stuff when I was riding the bike. So it was fun. Let me get Devon or Rashid or Cassin here. Either one just introduce yourself when you jump in some of the other players. How did you learn that Taylor did not know how to ride a bike? Yeah, this is Devon. We was just sitting there lunch one time in the cafeteria and we were just all talking about how our experiences we all went through and someone had just came up on the topic of riding the bike and Taylor had just mentioned he had never learned. So we recorded that video on 5th of Grucet. It was like we got to teach him about it. My ride a bike. And how did you teach him? Well, I would say it was really like a lot more to me because you know, you create a lot more over and over and over again and it just won't work. We tried to teach him multiple times and it's just like trial and error. But once
he finally got it to work, then he's off in the lead. Well, you guys will learn later in life when when you have kids of your own. It is that moment and you probably learn this with Taylor. It's that moment when you let go of the seat for the last time and you're praying to God, please don't fall over. Hey coach, one last thing and I know you did this for all of the right reasons, but I said this to you in a private email. I said the school could not have paid a million for the PR that has been generated from this very heartwarming moment. I know that's not why you did it, but I think it was a beautiful peak inside of your team and your commitment to those boys. Yeah, I'm glad that everybody got to see just that snapshot of these guys because you could, you know, this season, there's been multiple times and multiple moments that felt that same way,
you know, where one of our guys was hospitalized with just a freak infection and a knee and the the whole team decided to go to the hospital and visit them and, you know, without asking or anything, they they want to go and so little times like that where you just you want everybody to see the best of them and not knowing when they go into adulthood and these things are what make me proud is, you know, they put the ball in the hoop and everything's great on that side, but teaching them to be better men, better fathers, better husbands, better, you know, brothers, siblings, that's the stuff that it's ultimately about. Well coach, I'm reading here, you guys are five and one in conference play and I'm going to tell you you got a whole bunch of people in Kansas City rooting for your team this year. I think it's just beautiful what's happened here and hug those boys for us. Yeah, we got our next playoff game tomorrow, so we're just getting ready for it today, but guys are coming together and so that's what it ultimately leads to. Well, everybody in
Kansas City is now a fan of Fort Scott. Thank you. All right, you guys, you guys be great, man, take care of yourselves. I got one thing to say before you'll hang up. Who is this? Who is this? This is Cass Henry. We got a game tomorrow at KCK Kansas City Community College. Oh, yeah. At 3 p.m., all right, if y'all would like to come and support us, we will all be there and we would enjoy it if y'all can come support us for sure. All right, you're a Kansas City Kansas Community College tomorrow at 3 p.m. Yes, sir. Yes, man. Hey, you know what, Cass, we will be watching and cheering from over here. I promise you that. All right, we appreciate that. You be well, guys. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Best of luck, guys, take care. Yeah, go out. All right, man. Oh, I just love them. They're fantastic in the video. I'm going to post it here. Um, he's all easy, even wearing a helmet. Safety first, man. Well, safety is awesome. Here's the guy said, we had trial and error. We kept trying and it wasn't working. Well, but you know what it's like as a parent that first time, oh, you let go of that seat. Well,
as a kid, the first time they let go and you're, you're doing it, but you're kind of wobbly. Yeah. Like, oh, God, what do I do now? I want to stop. 913-586-7798.
