Cody Simpson's comeback after vocal cord injury

0:00Back in 2009 before TikTok and Instagram, there was Cody Simpson and a goalco's kid with the guitar who found fame. Look at that gorgeous on YouTube, quickly rising to international stardom, a successful music career, of course, followed before Cody proved, well, he was capable of far more than just topping the charts. Absolutely, in 2022, Cody swapped the stage for the pool. Winning gold at the Commonwealth Games, proving no gold is ever completely out of reach. And now the 29 year old is back in the spotlight with new music, big performances, and plenty happening both on and off the stage. Hello superstar. Thank you. It's always memory lane when I come here. I love watching kind of like a highlight reel of my life in a way. Do you mind watching all that young stuff? No, I don't. Young stuff. Yeah. Now, I think for a while there, it was almost like looking at like embarrassing old Facebook photos yourself when you were like 14. But then, then enough time goes by and you start to reframe and become proud of what you've done.

1:00And that's the way I can look at it now is in like a really positive nostalgic light. It's not you should be proud of all. Thanks, mate. Super cute. Well, not to get negative, but it hasn't been the eight years. Well, I feel like that was a lovely set up. Oh, really? It's been a hard year. Yeah. There's been a few things. You've had a few setbacks, haven't you? Obviously, your vocal cords dislocated there. Oh, but you're looking good now. So it's really not the end. It's nice to be talking and walking again, you know? A few obstacles thrown at me, but you know, I don't mind a challenge. And it was one of those things I had to just deal with. And it certainly through my whole kind of plan for my album this year, of course, and everything. And I haven't been able to work that much. But I'm started speaking again about two weeks ago. So yeah, it was a damage vocal cord. And yeah, nice to be back in heel, sir. That must have been an unusual feeling, though, not to be able to use your voice. So strange. Yeah, I was mute on and off for like months.

2:00Yeah. When you're an elite athlete, do you get better faster? Do you tackle things differently? I don't know. I think I just call up and crawl up in a crime myself to sleep. And you don't even have to be sick to do that. When you get to, do you just like, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah, so I'm going to beat this. Oh, absolutely. Like immediately, it's kind of like, you can allow yourself maybe a day of, you know, sitting in it and being sad about it. And then like, you know, just been very, very quick to bounce back and go, no, like I'm going to do everything I can to, you know, if the doctor's like, it's going to be three months, I'm like, it's going to be two. You know, because I'm going to do everything right and whatever, so. That's why you're different to us. No, no, no. You've also managed to keep things moving inspired of everything that you've got going on. You've already released three new songs. Yeah, yeah. Like, how did you do that? With different things going on? Yeah, I was working pretty much for the last 18 months in the studio, figuring out what I wanted to do again musically and like being back in playing full time. And dropped a single kind of right before this happened

3:00that started doing extremely well. And everyone was loving it. It became, I think, my most played song on the radio here in the 15 years of my career, which was quite crazy at not to say this age, because I'm still young, but for how long I guess I've been doing it since I started, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then all this happened, and I had to kind of take a beat and I'm getting back in now and finishing the rest of it. So I'm excited. Yeah. If Sel and I don't think you've done enough musically this year already, we get any more up by the end of the year? Can't say for sure yet. It kind of depends how I go getting back in, because I'm only just now allowed to sing and do businesses usual. So I can't say for sure. Definitely next year, it depends on how it takes me to finish the record and stuff. Yeah. I mean, you've got lots of things going on as well. It's not just that you've just been in the Great Barrier Reef. Yes. Will you start for a special new project? Yes, yes. Working with Garnier and the Great Barrier Foundation on their new partnership, being an ambassador for them,

4:04because they're just doing this fantastic Garnier's helping the Great Barrier Foundation with a lot of their choral restoration up there and helping spawn new choral. And I think they've been doing that for about three, four years now. Yeah. It's incredible to see what they're doing and to see it first hand. Yeah. It's amazing work, but it is a gigantic job. Yes. Working. Well, I mean, as of this year, after this choral spawning season, they're going to have helped spawn about three million new chorals across the reef, which is really nice. I mean, I grew up going up there. Of course. My grandparents lived on a sailboat up there for a while, so we'd go up on school holidays and go diving and everything. So it was really nice to go back up and reconnect and help be a part of a solution that has been an ongoing issue at the reef and for our country for a while. So yeah, the reef, I'm recently, we took my kids there. I mean, every Australian should do it. We, you know, everyone thinks that it's going to look like it's all, you know, I'm not expecting that. It is amazing.

5:04So it's something, yeah. Yeah. I'm shouting out from the rooftops, because I feel like people would be very surprised. Yeah. One more thing, just to add to the list of things for you to do this week, come, just to reading all the things you do on Friday. You've got the NFL, the blockbuster, you're seeing the national anthem. Yes, yes. Obviously, two weeks ago, didn't have your voice. And now, well, like that's extraordinary, a massive audience, because obviously it's going to the US. Yeah, no, absolutely. It's great. I mean, I've followed NFL most of my life, having kind of grown up between LA and here. And we've got LA playing San Fran, which is fun. It's kind of, it was kind of the perfect thing to start singing again. It was like, you know, a minute or so long. I love the anthem. I've done it before. I knew I could do it. And I was like, this is kind of the perfect thing to test out the, the old pipes again, you know. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm good to see you. You've successfully held those sunglasses for an entire life. I know. I didn't realize I walked on an ounce here with them still. So when you're a rock star, when you're music superstar, you can do cool stuff. Like if you did it, I'd think you.
