The matchup might be scary to them. First, we got to talk about Eric, when I think about this game, I don't know how Josh Heifel is coming into this game. We're definitely getting to that. I know for me, when I look at how Tech performed last week and how all the hype coming into the game and all the back and forth on social media and everybody talking about their player

2:10small, not y'all player small, we big, y'all small, and all that stuff. It just seems like to me, man, Brink Key is in a space where he just might just be a must-win game for him. I know y'all, the big dog, SCC and everything, but it might be a must-win for Brink Key. Yeah, I mean, I certainly don't know what's coming up in your schedule or anything, but I know just based on what happened last Thursday, this is, I mean, for Brink Key, he's enough fantastic job down there in Georgia Tech. You build your team on Lana's Scrimmage, be in tough, stopping the run, running the football, all those things just weren't evident, obviously, against Colorado. If you want to be, you know, continuing to be that number two team in the ACC, knowing that they got some tough games on the schedule, I'm with you. This is a huge game for Georgia Tech and really just to kind of, like, there's no such thing as moral victories, but like, you just need to play well because if you play well, and you have chances to win, you can tip your cap.

3:10It's still frustrating, but you can tip your cap. If you show up like you did against Colorado, then it's like, man, you got some big issues in terms of the season ahead. So, I agree with you. I think that's a huge win for Georgia Tech. I think that's a huge game for Brink Key. It's a big game for Tennessee. You know, the SCC schedule, it's never easy. Texas in two weeks, you know, you've got Alabama, you know, next month, of course, you got LSU, Texas A&M, a Cal field coming up later in the year. And you need to be able to kind of be in position to want to be in that college football playoff conversation. And in order to do that, you need to win, you know, you need to win this game. And it's a tall task. I'm going to mention it several times as a first true road game for a true freshman phase on Brandon. So that is a massive storyline for me. Seeing what Colorado did, obviously, Georgia Tech, Tennessee needs to be able to run the football with some authority. But all those things, it's, it's, it's week two, right? I mean, this is the first true, you know, team with the pulse that Tennessee will have seen. You know, like I said after Tennessee, you just blasted firm and like, you know, I like what I saw, but I don't know anything about this football team outside of the maybe

4:13phase on's a little bit further along than I thought he was, but because you just can't take anything away, you're going to learn a lot about Tennessee, you know, after Saturday, because Georgia Tech is obviously a formidable opponent. You know what, man, I think you make an excellent point because that's what I wanted to kind of ask you about because, you know, again, you're supposed to win like that, you know, FCS team and, you know, you post a curb stunt for them and get everybody reps and repetitions. You know, I saw that they got, got to be able to get back into the game as well in the third quarter. I'm about, what about, almost about five or six minutes left or, you know, about halfway through the third quarter. So, you know, when you got your backup quarterback in the third quarter, that lets you know what type of game this is. But like, is there anything that you were like, okay, this might be something to work on because I did see, Irman did rush for a lot of yards and I know Jim knows was brought in at the defensive coordinator kind of fixed those things. Did that kind of give you a little cause for, for concern? No, not that. I'll tell you what did give me calls for concern in a second.

5:13But that was, and I don't want to take anything away. I mean, stats or stats, but it was fourth quarter, a Cleveland high school, you know, near Cleveland, Tennessee, near Chattanooga. You know, he was running back. They came from that high school play for Cremts. I'm gonna say, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he went off, dude. He went off and had a day, had a day in Neal and Stadium. So I'm happy for that young man. But ultimately, Tennessee had some, you know, freshman and three's and four's in. And they just, they got, you know, they got out of the rush line. So a lot of the stats kind of blossom for firm in there in that fourth quarter. I think that's more than more than what it was all together. I think before that fourth quarter, they have like 20 yards rushing, I think it's a team. So I'm not too worried about that. What I am worried about, cause for concern, what I want to see, you know, a little bit better. Tennessee didn't get off to a good start offensively against Ferman. Offensive line play, tight ends in the run game. Wasn't that impressive in the first quarter now. Obviously they ran for it with three of the yards like it is what it is. But at first quarter, it was, you know, left a lot to be desired.

6:13You had to touch down drive on your opening possession. Then you, you know, you're stalled up, you know, to fourth down the next possession. Um, didn't look very good. They had to turn over, you know, later on in that game as well. Uh, so I want to see the offensive line. I want to see the offense get off to a better start. That was a little bit concerning it, especially running the football. Tennessee really couldn't run the football well in the first quarter. And, you know, against Ferman, you really should be getting five, six yards of pop. So that's something that needs that for Tennessee. Tennessee's got to get up to a better start offensively move the chains and find some sustained run game success in that first quarter. Man, I think, man, that's almost mirror what, you know, tech needs to do because that's the, that's the big thing for me that I see that has to improve. Like if running game for tech doesn't improve, you know, I know it's going up against the SEC opponent. That's going to be harder to do, but like you have to improve the offensive line has to play better. And I think that getting off to a good start with, with do them well. So what do you think is far as like Josh Hypo's like big emphasis is this week because

7:16I know he has been all about telling the truth. Hey, man, we suck. We play soft. You would just be going in all week, man. I'm like, Hey, man, calm down. You know, I even asked him, I was like, Hey, man, how do you build players up after you holding the counter for four straight days? You know, so let me ask you about that, man. Look, I host the radio show here in Knoxville and obviously my, my Thursday show, the first segment was all about that press conference for breaking my, my Wednesday radio show was all about that. I mean, I went in there. I got his press conference 26 minutes long. Eight minutes was the opening statement monologue and I cut it up and meshed up into like three minutes and I'm like, right. Love the transparency. Sure. You know, I love that you're taking ownership. He's calling out his team. He's calling out himself. I got love all that. If I'm a Georgia Tech fan, I'm like, okay. Now what? Like, okay. Yeah. But also from a Tennessee perspective, I'm like, damn, man, like, could you not do that like after this game? It's like, like, if you're a competitor, like, you know, you're former ball player, like,

8:19if you're a competitor, you respond one of two ways. If you're not ready to go run through a flippin wall after hearing that, like, my coach called me up publicly. If I'm not ready willing to do that, like, I shouldn't be here. So, like, like, if I'm Georgia Tech, like, you're going to come out with your hair on fire in this football game as you should because of what happened on Thursday and then having your head coach just drag you in front of the media as it's in the sea. I'm like, Hey, man, like, she's like, why are you going to be nice? It's like, like, it's cool. We can poke fun. But it's like, man, they're going to be fired up. So that was kind of my take on all that. I mean, I was, I love the transparency, man. I really, really, I respect the heck out of it. But I do. I mean, I was like, he was like, Josh Hyples of that. Oh, he's just being nice about the physicality. I'm like, Hey, man. Yeah, the, like, and that's the crazy thing about him. And like, that's why I asked him that because, like, that monologue was long. I mean, key normally is he can be monologous. You know, he can really get, like, he can let it real, you know, and I've always said, there's like, key will give you a good sound. Like, if you mess with you as far as who's asking the question, play a, yeah, you'll give

9:23you a good answer. But that's why I asked him that I was like, man, was that your question to ask about Tennessee? Huh? Was that you was that you asking the question? No, that was, um, that was my guy that was, that's 60, that's when he comes on my show with Noggin. He asked him about the whole thing. I was going to say, man, that was you. You were all over Noggin already on today. No, he, that's my guy Noggin. He's, um, he calls with me sometimes, cool. I'm going to show, but, but now I asked him about the question before, um, after that, about like, you calling out guys and all that stuff, man, like, so when does the buildup start to happen? Like, how do you build up guys back up? And he said something I thought was very interesting. He was just like, he's like, Jarvis, this is a football, man. Like, if I got to get you fired up the play football, after the way you played last week, I got to come up here and motivate you to get you come back to get back to, uh, something form with normalcy. No, man. Like, you know, you don't deserve to be here. I am like, uh, makes sense.

10:23Yeah. No, I, and makes all this again. Well, back to what I said, like, if you need any more motivation after like playing like that the other night and then your head coach dragging it, it's like, you probably don't need to be on the football team. So, man, that's the, I don't know about you, but, you know, I took that, those were fine words back in my day, you know, I'm saying back in my old heathen days, Eric, you know, I used to, you know, I used to do some, some interesting stuff back in my day, you know, that we all, yeah. So, I do like the fact that again that like he's like, he's like trash product. Sorry about it. That it, uh, it's soft, but it starts with me. My coach, you said we're not like, I love this. Like, you're soft, but it's my fault. Like, I love all that. Yeah. Uh, for hyper real quick, I know we got to move on like, yeah, again, this is, um, I mean, I think a high wasn't a good spot. I think he's an stressed the run game. Get off to a good start. Um, it's a pivotal game. It's a game that like everybody's kind of been looking at, you know, it's not an SEC game, but it's, it's a jumping off point before you get an SEC slate. It's really kind of a litmus test too. Cause again, you got texas, texas in two weeks.

11:25Everybody knows that's going to be just a tremendous challenge, even though it's at Neelan Stadium. How you perform in this game against Georgia Tech, which again, I didn't show it on Thursday, but should, you know, be good and a lot of scrimmage run the football, stop the run, hard nose, you know, break key style football. And you can see that you can see the high performance against that kind of G.G. On where you are and heading into that Texas game and all that. So I just think it's a big pivotal game. It's one that's kind of been circling on the calendar, you know, all offseason and again, it kind of goes back to this as well. Like, this is the first team that tennis team is really playing. So exciting stuff looking forward to it. And just, uh, it's almost here, man, I'm excited for it. Absolutely. And coming up next, we'll talk about the big matchup. 13:26I am Mary Kane, host of Lockdown Balls, Lockdown Balls crossing over with locked on Georgia Tag Jarvis Davis, host of locked on Georgia Tag in a big one, Tennessee and Georgia Tag down at Bobby Dodd Saturday, seven o'clock on ESPN. Big matchups in this football game. I want to hear from you first, Jarvis, big matchup that you that you think Georgia Tag could exploit or a matchup that you're worried about when regards a Tennessee. Man, I got I got to start with with big number two, man. You know, I play a deep ass alignment, you know, that's my worth. That's where my eyeballs kind of get glued to when I'm watching football games. Xavier Gilliam. Oh my gosh. Man, oh no way I got that man from but you are tell me about him because he's one that I am a little concerned about and he'll be lining up over Joseph I. Notters who's played right guard. Joseph I not have played mostly center, you know, throughout the spring and they kind of swishing guys up, you know, same names, but you know, kind of move some guys around. So now he's playing right guard and I think you got a task on his hands when it comes

14:29to Xavier Gilliam. So they got him for Penn State. He came over with you know, with with with Jim Knowles, obviously, you know, via the transfer portal and came over Chess Coleman, too, Chess Coleman, not this football game, not playing for Tennessee, but nonetheless, you know, he's got to play some at Penn State, but he was not a three down defensive tackle. He's not broken out and yes, again, disclaimer, FCS firm and I hear you. He had three sacks. He had sacks on back and back plays in the first quarter. Six TFLs. It's not just like he exploited a really inferior offensive line, which he did, but like he's had he was the talk of spring camp for Tennessee. He's had a great fall camp Rodney Garner, who doesn't praise anybody in fall camp, praised him and said, he's he's leading the way, man, he's a good one. Like he's like, so like this has not been a surprise. Uh, Gilliam is expected to lead that defensive line. He got to a really, really good start. So he had a man. He's he's good. I'm glad he's a Tennessee. I think this is a breakout year for him.

15:30Yeah, man. I think that's going to be something to definitely keep an eye out on because like when you have a guy, and from my understanding, he moved from defensive end down to defensive tackle. Correct. So when you have a guy like that man, that means that athleticism is automatically there. Yeah. You know, he just got a little bit more weight on him and more than likely, you know, powerful for a school man. He had him on pure muscle. So I think having a guy like that, that's disruptive. That kind of like violent when it comes to when he comes off the ball, you kind of see just pops that get off. It's just it's there. I get pops off tape. And I think he's going to be a guy I definitely have to have my eye on, man, because those guys can wreck games and you don't want someone like that getting off like that. Kind of on that note real quick, so I don't forget to ask you this and then I'll get to mine. Tell me about that offensive line. I know they played like crap against Colorado, but I read something and you kind of mentioned

16:31it there. A lot of movement was this movement from spring to fall or like guys wrapping one spot in fall camp and playing a different spot in the opener. I heard a lot of movement center to go or tackle the center. What's up with that offensive line? So throughout the spring, Joe, I'm not a transferring from Alabama. He was working at the center spot. And then you had Melika Karnie who was the starter last year at Wright tackle. He had moved down the garden in spring. And then Jamie some reeks who's now the starting center. He was at Wright tackle. So they had been going with that for all spring and for the most part through fall camp. And then once those dip charts popped out, who's like, you know, yeah, raised, moved down the center, I had not popped out to go up right guard. And then Melika Karnie, but back out to Wright tackle. So yeah, that's, it was, I thought it was kind of interesting because I'm a big believer in continuity. Eric, when it comes to the offensive line because a lot of times those guys, man, they get used

17:36to each other. They understand, they understand, they even know what the guy next to those sports smell like. You know what I'm saying? Like it just, they just know each other. And when you get all those reps together and for them to kind of switch it up, I know it's the same names. Like I said, they, they just moved those guys around. It's always going to be different. So I'm hoping that it can be more so over. Hey, listen, we got that first game out of the way. And I knew spots. Now you can kind of settle in a little bit. Yeah, it's just one game. I mean, again, just like I said, Georgia Tech is much better than what they showed against Colorado in my opinion. Like it's just one game. You don't know over yet. I wonder why they moved them and if they want to move them back to their more natural positions is something, probably not for this game, obviously, but you know, at some point, that's interesting. The matchup I'm looking for and it's not, I wouldn't say it's even like worrisome for me. It's just, and I didn't learn anything much about Tennessee against Furman, but at least saw, like I saw the offensive, I saw Gileum, other defensive, I saw Tennessee linebackers run all over the place.

18:37I saw Faes on brand and just look awesome. I saw Mike Matthews catch. I saw some, the secondary was never tested. They threw for 70, they threw for 64 yards or whatever. And it was a defensive line. You know, it is like in those games, the front seven defensive line got to dominate. They did. So they never stretched a field vertically. Tennessee has a rebuilt secondary. Two new safeties from the transfer. Well, they're starting safeties out for the year, but they went and got Dejan Lane from Penn State as well, pairing him with TGA Met Gap. Those are your safeties. Okay. So they're coming from Kansas State. Ty Rebman's back. He started for Tennessee. He was a true freshman last year. And then when he got Kay and Lee, who was a multi year starter at Auburn, that's a new rebuilt secondary. I think it's good. I love the pieces back there. Have a scene and play together. And so like, you know, they were on the field together at Furman. They were never tested. So how does this new look secondary combat with Alberto Mendoza, which if you look at the statue, you're like, oh, maybe a pretty good day. And like I'm not saying he didn't.

19:38I'll watch the game. I'm just saying that for the most part, he wasn't stretching vertically. He did make some nice throws there. I was like, man, look at that. And then of course, I saw him, you know, his ankle turned up on. I'm just intrigued to see kind of what this matchup looks like. Mendoza versus Tennessee's secondary. Because it'll be the first test for Tennessee's secondary. Yeah. And that was the one, probably one of a few positives that came out of that game was that. And those are some ball players. He's a guy. Like he, he looked like he's going to be, if he stays consistent, like, take care of the football. He's like, he's going to be a guy that kind of really, like, I say probably maybe like six, seven game. And then everyone was like, oh, okay, he's a real deal. But I think for now, I felt like George Gossie's office coordinator. He got a little conservative. He was almost kind of like, I don't want to put all the balls in his hands, you know, but still trying to run this ball. Like, no, man, it's not working. Put the ball in your quarterback's hands. Like that, I feel like he's that type of guy.

20:39And then also, he made some big throws on third downs and as far as the wide receivers go, you better, you better watch out for daily pens. Daily Pinson moved from defense to offense in the spring. Daily Pinson is a state champion, two time state champion in track. Did he transfer from somewhere else or was he Georgia Tech always? He was at Georgia Tech. Yeah. So he's the deep threat guy. He's a deep, he's definitely a deep threat guy. Jordan Allen, who was the only wide receiver that caught a pass on this team that was on this team last year. He's a guy you need to worry about need to be on the lookout for too. I think those two really established themselves as go to guys. And then as far as the tight end goes, Kevin Roche. 69, about 265. He's a weapon. He's a guy that he's like a safety net for Alberta Mendoza.

21:42Yeah. I feel like that was the clear advantage that Tech had over Colorado. And I feel like they just didn't go to it enough. But yeah, that's I feel like Tennessee might have a nice little test on with that wide receiver group. Yeah. I mean, obviously it's a tough comparison, but just because the height, you know, the height in the position, but I saw that. I'm like, oh, don't know Washington. Let's see if he plays, which in college, don't know Washington didn't do anything, right? He was a Georgia. He looked good. I'm like, six foot nine, about 270. I wouldn't think and run. Oh, he can't run. All right. He runs like a deer. Like I was taking the back by. I was like, he was supposed to move like, he's not. He really not. And he had a lot of field goal too. So you know, you don't look out for that as well. Yeah. Yeah, for real. All right. Georgia Tech wins F locked on crossover roles on here, locked on balls and locked on Georgia Tech. What are some of the things that you see these things happen or this thing happens Tennessee will win this football.

25:52First and foremost again, I mentioned it earlier in the show and I'm going to mention it again. This is not a shot. I don't mean this to be a shot like Tennessee will be a cowfield at some point Tennessee. You know, plays at Brighton Denny and Ben Hill Griffin like like those stadiums are a bit bigger. However, phase on Brandon has never played in front of this many people in his life. And it's going to be hot. It's going to be loud. It's going to be feisty. It's going to be what what college football is meant to be on the road. And phase on Brandon has never seen that right. And so how do you handle that? How do you handle it in practice and what preparations are you making for this in practice this week? You do you expect to get your starting center back center didn't play last week. I think that's going to help from a communication at standpoint and you know, not just with the quarterback with the fellow offensive lineman. I think that's huge. But you have to go silent count the points and times. How do you handle silent count? I'm so intrigued to see how phase on Brandon, you know deals with playing on the road for the first time ever in just a second collegiate game.

26:53So if you handle that, all the things to come with that, you don't get procedural penalties, pre snap penalties, all that and more for the most part. If you handle that well, I think that's a good sign for Tennessee. But also I just think you know Tennessee wins if that happens. But Tennessee's got to get up to a good start. Get up to a good start. How do you do that? I know that's basic football 101. I hear you. But but Tennessee did not do that offensive league and it's firm and a ball teams firm. And so you got to do it this week or that stadium is going to get loud. They're already turned on you obviously, but they're going to be letting you know, you're about at every single angle. And then you're going to be trying to hit the comeback trail and you know, with a young quarterback, I don't necessarily like that. So run the football effectively, start well offensively and let's see what that defense can do. You know, my eyes are on the young quarterback. How do you handle the situation? How do you handle the road environment? And can this offense get off to a better start? I think if you do those things that Tennessee's position pretty well, I like the roster, like the playmakers, I like this defense. I mean, treat about the secondary like I mentioned, but you get out of in front and get a lead.

27:54I think that you could be in position to control this football game if you're at Tennessee. Yeah, man. Phase on branding. He's a talented young man. I even said this yesterday on the par that no head coach, probably laying Kiffin's probably only one. No head coach is going to hand the football to their true freshman quarterback and say, throw the ball 35 times and win us this game on the road. You know, that that that would never happen, right? I saw them, you know, crazy man down there in bad rules. Yeah. So I think that, you know, if tech is able to figure out a way to stop the run, they know to say stop. That might be a little bit too harsh. If they can keep those guys from running the ball consistently, if you can keep Tennessee running from running the ball consistently, I think you're going to force phase on branding to beat them throwing the football. And I think that'll be a good situation to take. I definitely think they have a good chance of winning in that particular scenario.

28:58But for me, man, I'm going to get boring. I'm going to go boring. Eric, when you think about being able to run the football, I think I got to figure out a way, man. They got to figure out a way to run the rock because you have a Lamborghini in Ferrari and back there in the backfield and Justice Haynes and Melican, Holesley, you got to get those guys involved and get them going because if you don't, you know, I know I talked about Albaard and Mendoza looking really good throwing the football, but I don't want any quarterback in the situation where you have to throw the win. Because that's where Tech found themselves last year. You know, in the month of November, the run game wasn't quite working in. Hey, hey, hey, save us, hey, you know, hey, hey, save today. You know, he did it for quite a bit for most of the season, but it came up to bite you, you know, towards the end of the year. So I think Georgia Tech wins if they figure out a way to run the football, get justice

30:01and Melacogon, get both of them going because I'm greedy when it comes in running the ball. If you can get both of those guys going and then kind of build off of that play action and taking some deep shots with Pinson and Jordan Allen, I think Tech will be in a good shape. I'm looking at these two quarterbacks, you know, they're both, they're similar in some respects. I mean, I've heard those older, obviously, this is a third year, right? Yeah, 30. Yeah, I mean, he's not playing. By the way, I forgot the other, I forgot earlier today that like, there's no, I call somebody a red shirt freshman or a red shirt sophomore. I'm like, no, that's not a thing anymore. It's just, I know, like, what are you supposed to call them now? We're in like, I was talking about like looking ahead to like SEC awards and I was like, you know, are they still going to give the, you know, freshman of the year to a red shirt freshman? Like, no, it's a sophomore. You can give a, you can give us, because like, I don't know, it's just going to take a lot of the use of it. It's a little ball, man, it's how we are. That's what we are right now. Yeah, we don't know. Yeah. But like, I'll birth those older, right? But he's not played a lot at all. And so like to your point, you don't want him to, you know, have to throw the football

31:06go win you the game. You want to be able to help him. You want to, you know, what's up quarterback's best friends run on the football. Like, I allow him to ease himself in. And then, you know, maybe this game, maybe next game or whatever, he'll go out there and win you a game or whatever, but like, he's still pretty fresh, still pretty blue. He's on Brandon. This is literally his second game ever. This will be his first one on the road. And I think Tennessee is going to run him. I do because I think that that's something that he has confidence in. I think they do mess it. They, they write like Tennessee against Ferman put on, I mean, I think everybody knows he was going to run anyway, but they put on tape for design quarterback runs all inside the firm in 25 to inside the 10 and they went for scores. Like, they're going to run the football. They wanted Georgia Tech to prepare for him in that, that regard and all that. But like, I think that that's kind of an equalizer, if you will, if there is one to like, being a true freshman to a, to a third year guy, it's like, okay, well, I can use my legs. I can run. They're going to run me. And that's going to be kind of helping me come along a little bit until I get settled into my first road game. So it'll be interesting.

32:07Tennessee and Georgia Tech. I'm looking forward to it, man. And you want to give a, you want to give your prediction right now? What do you think? Oh gosh, man. Oh, I think Tech has a good showing. It probably come up a little short. I think because I don't, the way I saw Colorado run the football against this defense line last week, they're going to have that make a hell of a jump. A hell of a jump to improve on that. I know Tennessee is coming in about to run this rock. I know that for a fact, like, you just laid it out. And I knew it before we even started having this conversation. So yeah, that's, that's my biggest concern. But if they do, I mean, I'd be, I'd definitely be pleasantly surprised, but I just don't think they're going to make that big of improvement from week one or week two. I think Tennessee wins. I think Tennessee will score some points.

33:09I'm not calling for a lot of points. I'm kind of, that's why this line, I think, makes a whole lot of sense. Like, I think, I think tech covers I do. I wouldn't be shocked if Tennessee covered, but I think tech covers, I think this could be like a 10 point game somewhere around there, like 2717. You know, something like that. I'll say 2717. I think that's, I think Georgia Tech is, obviously, I think Georgia Tech is much better than it showed. I mean, I was kind of perplexed, man. I mean, me and everybody else, I know, like, I'm just saying, I'm like, really? Like, what's going on? Like, too much talent on that roster, too good of a coach. I'll be intrigued to see how it bounces back. Hopefully for Tennessee not all the way back right here. But like, I'm going to this game knowing, like, okay, I saw them play like absolute dog crap, but I know they're better than that. So like, nothing's, not that ever was like, nothing's going to be, you know, given. So you got to go down there and earn it. And so we'll see if Tennessee earns it, man. Absolutely.
