About this episode

Texas QB Arch Manning opened the year with a 20-for-27 performance for 305 yards, 4 TDs and 1 INT in a 59-7 win over Texas State. So is that a sign that he and a revamped Longhorns offense are ready for this weekend's top-5 showdown with the Ohio State Buckeyes?

In this special bonus episode, you'll hear directly from Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian about that and much more, including their talented wide receiver duo of Ryan Wingo and Cam Coleman, the return of LT Trevor Goosby from a knee injury, and more.

We get your identity countdown to that top five match up in DKR on Saturday night. This is the first of two bonus shows where you're going to get to hear a little bit from Texas head coach Steve Sarkeesian. He had a lot of interesting things to say in the wake of his teams

59 to 7 win over Texas State in week one. Honestly, it was a very similar game to Ohio States. They kind of had their way. There was some stuff they could kind of nitpick after the game. Worth noting Texas State probably a better team than Ball State but the end result of the games was kind of very similar. They both played a ton of players in the first halves of the games. Both teams did. It was also the weather in Texas on Saturday. I don't know if you saw that. There were fans that were having all sorts of heat issues. The heat index in Texas was 105 for the game. The temperature on the field was 150 for the game and they're forecasting hot temperatures this weekend as well. If you were going to the game, you're going to want to stay hydrated. We'll get to that all that stuff a little later on the week. On this show, you're going to hear a little bit about Steve Sarkeesian's thoughts on the Texas offense. We're going to start with quarterback Arch Manning. He was 20 of 27 for 305 yards for touchdowns. One interception.

Pretty good numbers. Not quite as good as Julian Sains numbers. Again, you've got to adjust for the opponent quality a little bit there. Just some thoughts from Steve Sarkeesian on Arch Manning's performance, especially with Ohio State on deck. He's going to reference Ryan in this answer. That is, White receiver Ryan Wingo and Cam is White receiver Cam Coleman. Yeah, I thought he played well. I think early on that first half, you could see the rapport with Ian Ryan. There was a definite connection happening there, which was great to see a beautiful deep ball. I know we threw the pick later in that drive, but a beautiful deep ball to Ryan down the far sideline. It was a little unfortunate on the pick. We had a double move with Emmett on. They didn't really guard the first move. I think Arch was there's a little feel in there. He was almost like, just turn around and let me throw it to you. By the time Emmett double moves, Arch has been staring at him. The backside safety gets the pick. Something to learn from on the play.

All at all, I thought he was really efficient. I thought there was a couple, like anything, he's human. There's a couple misreads. He's over 300 yards, four touchdowns and managed the game really well and was very efficient. There weren't a bunch of long foul balls. He throws a deep ball to Cam. We completed. If there was a deep ball to Ryan Wingo, we completed. He gave him chances to go make plays. Obviously, when you convert like that on third down, the quarterback's playing at a high level. That was good. It's good for a stouting form. We just set you up with Ryan Wingo and Cam Coleman in that last answer. Now he's going to get asked about Ryan Wingo and Cam Coleman. Wingo had seven catches for 120 win yards in a touchdown. Coleman, three catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Not a bad day of work for either of those guys. What did they get out of those pair of guys? Is this what they envisioned when they brought Coleman in in the portal to help Wingo out? Well, yeah. I mean, I just felt like, you know, Ryan got so much attention last year and

there were so many ways that we felt like we had to try to move him around to create opportunities for him. Now with Cam on the other side and the attention that he garners, it allows Ryan for a few more one-on-one opportunities, especially with the run game. But on the same token, being creative with Ryan because of the speed and because of his ability with the ball in his hands, you know, simple as a jet sweep, you know, down there in the low red for a touchdown is a way to utilize his strengths. But I thought he made a beautiful catch on the sidelines on our sidelines, which was not an easy catch. I believe that was on third down, third and three, something like that, the deep ball. So this guy's been working hard. You know, I think I said it to you guys Thursday. People forget this guy was a second team, all SEC receiver last year, you know, and take not the way from Cam. Cam's a fantastic player too, but Ryan Wingles pretty good. And I think he probably reminded a few people of that today. One of the very big stories in training camp for Texas was an injury to

starting left tackle Trevor Goosby. He had a bone bruise in his knee. There was some real concern that he might miss the Ohio State game. He didn't even miss the Texas State game. He played. He did miss a couple weeks, missed a week or two, but was back for the Texas State game. So how did he look? And what does he mean to the line? Now, in this answer, you're going to hear him mention Hollywood. That would be Hollywood smothers. They transfer running back from North Carolina State. He will also in the end of this answer throw in an update on Derek Cooper. Their freshman running back who also got hurt during the game. You know, I think it was indicative. The first play of the game we ran right behind Trevor, you know, and obviously a nice job of kind of cave in the left side and given Hollywood a new ability to spit. Again, Ryan Wingles goes and blocks the safety. We get Hollywood one on one with the corner. You know, I think for Trevor, one thing was just conditioning. He didn't get the scrimmages that the other guy's got. And so we felt like we needed him this week to play and play kind of into the second half because of the conditioning factor of it, right? Because we know

what's coming. So in the end, I got to look at the tape on some of it. Some of it look good. And some of it looked a little sloppy. I thought the past protection was actually really good in the game. You know, I know we took the one sack there. I think it was near the end of the first half. Might have been on like first in one. It was like a really weird scenario. After the hold on Emmett, I think we end up taking a sack. But I would argue that might have been on the quarterback and opportunity to throw that away. So, but again, the run game we got to look at and find ways to make it even cleaner. I'm sure there was some stuff that was good and some that wasn't. And we just got to look at the tape and figure that out. Cooper's got an ankle. We'll monitor that thing and see what that looks like, move forward. This next answer, he's asked about the impact of new faces. And Texas brought in a lot of new faces on this year's team. One of them, he's going to mention here is a freshman that's running back Relique Brown. Pretty much everyone else he mentions here is a transfer. So he's going to talk about how running back Hollywood's mothers,

why does she for Cam Coleman? You have already heard about both of those guys. Linebacker Rahim Biles. And then after that, he uses mostly full names so you can sort of figure those guys out. But take note, there are a whole lot of new faces that he's going to be mentioning here. It's easy to point out the guys like, you know, Cam Coleman, Hollywood, Relique and, you know, they're scoring touchdowns and Rahim's, you know, causing a turn over. But I'll be remiss if I didn't mention Justin Criar and the way he played and what he did for us are Melvin Ciony and what he did are Dylan Sikorski or Lawrence Seymour, you know, Beaumasco. There's a lot of guys out there from other places playing for us. And so I think from afar, as a coach, you're trying to watch everything, I think they all did pretty well. I know there's stuff that they all can do better. I mean, I have stuff in my head where I'm like, okay, he could do this better or do that better. But I think for the first time, you know, running out of the tunnel at DKR and putting this jersey on and understanding what you're playing for,

I thought they did a nice job, you know, and I think that the veterans and the leaders on our team have done a good job of prepping them for that. I didn't feel like for any of them, it was too big. But it is, you know, let's call it like it is. It's a big deal to play football at the University of Texas and they recognize that and I thought they handled it well. A little like the Ohio State game, the backup quarterback position was a little bit of a topic of conversation after the game. He was asked about his impressions of backup quarterback KJ Lacey. Now that's a name that might not matter at all this weekend or as we all know, it could be one snap away from mattering a whole lot. So here's Sark's thoughts on his backup quarterback KJ Lacey. Yeah, you know, I mean, I just think there's a level of consistency and comfort in the system. He definitely has playmaking ability. I think we saw that today. I mean, just the first play he's in, you know, rolling to his left, getting his hips around and hitting the domain bishop on a corner route. I mean, that's not easy. That's a tough play to make. It was a little hard because of the score. I was trying to get him

some throws and not just hand the ball off, but also be respectful of GJ and their team. But I think we saw enough, you know, he made a nice throw on a on a fade route to Sterling Bull Coulter. You know, there was there were some throws in there that he made. You could see his feet working for him. I think there was a third down in there. If he could have back, he probably uses legs and run, which is what he's capable of doing and we settle for the field goal. But all at all, you know, I think GJ is a really good player. I think he knows our system and I think we can, we can tailor it to his strengths when he gets in the game and he's a good player for us. The Longhorn scored on all but one drive in the game. They were 11 of 15 on third down, two of two on fourth down. That's a pretty good day of work for the Texas offense. So where do they still have room to improve over there? Yeah, you know, I think, I think ultimately, we know when we have the threat of running the football, that's when we're at our best as an offensive football team. And I think there were too many times today where it was gain a one,

gain a none, gain a two. And so how do we find that consistency that a bad run is four yards or three yards? You know, second, seven is a heck of a lot better than second and 10. And so I think just, you know, finding that rhythm and some of that is the line, some of that is the runners. I felt that times we were dancing a little too much with the ball on our hands and taking four yards because second and sixth is great. But finding that consistency in the run game and not be so big little, I think will benefit the entire offense. And that again, you know, forces defenses hands to say, maybe I get a gatta, this, you know, two safety shell and bring a guy into a box. And we see the value. And when you leave those two guys on the outside, one on one, how they can hurt you down the field. All right. So there you go. Sark's thoughts on the offense and you know, Sark and offense go together like peanut butter and jelly. He is known as one of the offensive gurus among head coaches in college football. It should be a great matchup between him and Matt Patricia
