He's Bruce Pearl, Turner and CBS Sports College basketball analyst. Three-time national coach of the year. And, in case you didn't know, former Auburn head coach, Bruce Pearl. What's bothering you today, coach? The life is good. It's great to see you. My heart breaks for my son. But, you know what? You got a chance to win your way in or lose your way out. And Auburn probably was just one more win away from Dancing. How would you rate your week? Or the last ten days or two weeks, let's say, as an analyst? That's a great question, Dan.

4:03I was a basketball coach, head coach for 30 years, and been in basketball for 48 years. And so this analyst thing and being an immediate brand new. So I am a rookie at that, even on 66 years old now. And sometimes you don't know how you're doing. I mean, when I used to play or use the coach, it was a scoreboard. I get off and I'm like, I don't know. I don't know how I did. I imagine some people think I'm entertaining. I would imagine some people think I'm an idiot. But you never know whether you're winning or losing. But, does somebody tell you? I mean, you got headlines. I don't know if you feel like that's part of your job. No, I don't think it's part of my job. I think my job is to tell you what I think based on my years of experience. And I've never, as you know, Dan, I've never been politically correct. So I really don't worry about that stuff. And what I did learn, though, is sometimes when you do give your opinion about something, you know, you can be taken out of context or you can be taken to task.

5:06And I really don't mind either one of them. Right now, I'm the ugly stepmother. Because I asked the question, are we looking for the 37 best teams or the 37 most deserving teams when it came to that large? And so that became enemy number one again. Okay, how much of the story of Miami, Ohio? Help them get into the tournament. I'd say about 95% and that's fine. There is a human element that exists in that room and it should exist. You don't just go by the metric. You just don't go by the numbers of math. You got to have a little bit of a feel. And so as I said this from the very beginning, I would put them in the field. I would put them in the field. If you're going to tell me, do they qualify based on these metrics? The answer is absolutely not. And it's interesting, Dan. Last night, I asked when I was on CBS, I asked Chairman Gill. I said, okay, last two in, first two out. What were the metrics that was sort of the defining factor for you? You know, that's a fair question, right? Yeah. And he said, he said quality wins.

6:07Quality wins was he said. I said, I did not follow up out of respect. And you know, these are things we can talk about the next day. Miami, Ohio doesn't have a quality win. Oklahoma and Auburn, who the last teams left out, have a half a dozen quality wins each. And so it's, I think it's sort of just added to the, the drum a little bit. But look, I'm happy they're in. They deserve to be in the field. It's what the Cinderella's are all about. And so I think we need to sort of adjust the metrics. So we get more of these mid major teams in a tournament. But the way it's set up right now, you've got to make an exception. I thought Stanford had a better argument than Oklahoma and Auburn, coach. Tell me why. Well, would they have five quad one victories? They had 20 plus wins. I mean, just start there. It feels like a pretty good resume. I agree. No, it's a good resume. And one of the things I've said all along, is that only anybody got screwed here.

7:07Nobody got screwed. I don't think it was anybody. Oh, my God. How did this team get in or not get in? You can make an argument for Stanford. You can make an argument for. If they said to me, if VCU didn't win their tournament, they were going to be out. And I would have made an argument for VCU. The argument for Auburn was, they played 17 quad one games. 17 might have well played one quad two. I mean, it's very difficult when you talk about apples and oranges. Auburn beat St. John's, who was the biggest champion. They beat Florida at Florida. It was the SEC regular season champion. They beat Arkansas by 20, who was the SEC tournament champion. So when it came to quality wins, I thought that was something that could have pushed them over the top. They had the number four straightness schedule. I'm not sure where Stanford's where. And a lot of that has to do with intense. Can you look at Auburn objectively? Yes. I 100% can't. Like, I think it's okay that Auburn and Oklahoma, for example, aren't in the field.

8:09I think it's okay. They should have won one more game. And so there's nobody complaining about it. But I tried myself on telling what I really think. Was I really for my son? Of course, I was really for my son. People say, well, you've got your son in the job. No, I didn't get my son in the job. My son played for me. My son was an assistant for me for 11 years. He was the associate coach. He was the defensive coordinator. Did I help him? Absolutely I did. As a dad, of course I did. But you look at, are you paid my Auburn? You know what? I'm in an ambassador's position. And not many Jewish guys walk away from $30 million. But this one did. And who does that? My wife was like, honey, why couldn't you just stink for a couple of years? Let him fire you and pay you $10 million to do what you're doing now. But no, you go ahead and quit. Leave all that on the table. Yeah, no, Dan, I objectivity for me.

9:09Not an issue. Okay. But I don't know if you have to disclose that. That, hey, I'm still paid as an ambassador for Auburn. If it felt like you were kind of dinging Miami Ohio because Auburn was going to be on the bubble. So that's the appearance. Okay. That's how a lot of people look. So the appearance of that, the optics didn't look good. Well, that's fair. And it certainly has a former Auburn basketball coach. What former coach or former athlete? Charles Barkley roots for Auburn. He does. But Charles Barkley's always going to keep it real. But he was paid at Auburn, not after Auburn. That's fair enough. Hey, listen, if I wasn't able to be objective, I wouldn't continue to be an Auburn. It's sort of the best of both worlds.

10:12I would give that up in a heartbeat if optics became such an issue that I couldn't be an analyst. Jay Wright works at Villanova for all those years. He still worked there. And nobody questioned whether that Jay Wright would have been objective. Are you retired as a coach? Yeah, I am. I thought about, I thought about it. I got a few phone calls even this year. But then I had coached for 30 years. And it was enough. We had a great one. And I do want to do some other things. As you know, I'm a huge advocate for this country. I want to coach America. I'm being a Jewish American. I work really hard to bring Jews and Christians and Muslims together. Abraham is a father of all nations. And the coach I love to bring people together, religion divides us and separates us. And of course, I love my country. And I also love my ancestral home on Israel. So those are the areas that I'm working in right now. And I think that in many ways, I had the success I had

11:13in order to give me this platform. I want Jewish Americans to be this country's greatest patriots because this country saved us from the Holocaust and gave us this opportunity. And we are hopefully make the most of it that comes with responsibility. So I'm going to Bruce Pearl, CBS Sports College, basketball, analyst, former Auburn, head coach. Best pro prospect in the tournament is who? A.J. advanced stuff. I think both on and off the court, Dan. If you're going to invest in somebody that is going to be your number one pick and you want to build your franchise around that, I think the stuff both on and off the court work ethic. All those things. This year is a great draft. It'll be the best freshman in the history of the NBA draft. This year, it is counted top. It's very, very deep. I don't think you can go wrong. I love several other players in there. I love Booser. Peterson is an incredible talent.

12:15Caleb Wilson is amazing. The point guards. Eight cuff. Yeah. Eight cuff is a great, great story. Kingston Fleming. It is absolutely, absolutely loaded. And that's why all these NBA teams are tanking because they want to improve their position in the draft. When you see Patino still doing it, what do you think? Amazing. Amazing. How does he have the energy though, Bruce? It feels like that's what leaves you first. Yeah. I don't know. I mean, everybody ages differently. I think my guess is, it's his family and basketball are his two major passion interests, a little bit of horse racing. Dan, he was the best day I ever went up against. He knew what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it. He knew how to take it away. He's not getting older, he's getting better. Tom is those the same way. I mean, Tom is always getting better if it's hard to believe. He has got good teams that he makes in the great teams.

13:21And so I got Patino and St. John's making a little bit of run this year in my bracket. I think Zubi Edge of Four is terrific. They guard really, really well. And they're starting to shoot the basketball better. How many teams can win it? I think there's certainly everybody that's on the one line can win it. I think St. John's has a five. How do St. John's, how would they have five? I mean, that's just like there are three seed in my, how can you come be a two and St. John's be a five? I know it's the body of the work and St. John's wasn't playing great early in the season. I'd say there are seven or eight teams I think that are winning. I think it's going to be a lot of chalk. Well, you know, we talked to different people about this that it used to be the last 10 games of your schedule meant the most going into the tournament. And I don't think that's the case. Now they look at your body of work. I don't care what you did in October or November. I care what you're doing now. And St. John's, you win the regular season.

14:24You win the biggest tournament. You won what six in a row. You blow out you con. I got to factor that in. Yeah. Dan, let me give you one something to think about. I agree how, how you're playing lately is more important. But the schedule, because people are more interested in late February and early March. You notice how the best teams play against the best teams like crazy. That's because there are more eyeballs on college basketball after college football are over. So the last 10 I don't think is a great metrics just because of the toughness of the schedule for the best teams. I mean, if you're on them, you know, so that would be just an issue. 20:28By the way, social media is all over this semi-sosa accident in quotation marks because a semi-sosa figurine that I've had for decades fell off a seat and desk. And some say, Sammy might have jumped. Others, you know, weeks my cameraman who does a great job, he accidentally knocked the semi-sosa figurine off and shattered. But social media is coming to his defense. Everybody Jeff in Saskatoon. He has stated that Mr. Weeks was simply waiting until the show was over to confess. He cares that much about the vibe of the show. He didn't want to undermine the standard, the defense rests. Okay. When Sammy Sosa went from a one-of-one figurine to many pieces of one, the cameraman Weeks was honoring Sosa by later acknowledging that he, quote, made mistakes like Sammy did in 2024.

21:29Would have to think that your cameraman Weeks knew nothing about the semi-crash given his head was buried deep under the desk at the time. Seaton has to own this one. That's from Dennis Demand. It was a loud crash, the semi-sosa figurine. Mr. Weeks was waiting until after the show to confess because he cares more about the vibe of the show. The defense rests. Thank you. Social media is all over this. Who would have thought Sammy Sosa figurine? It's all about content. Alrighty. Yes, Seaton. See, this is already starting to, like, a perception is reality kind of thing. Could you imagine if Fritzie saw the figurine break instead of seat in the fallout would be brutal and the show would be hilarious? Lots of people saw it break. 23:30And look, you can't tell. Look, it's back together. No big deal. And plus it was for Mick Lovin. Yeah, and his Andrew is not care. And I don't care. Yeah, who cares about it? Yes, still. I-I mean, I do have something to admit. I was sitting right here and I had no idea that that thing broke or that anything was going on over there. 25:30I think that there's some culpability with whoever placed the Sami on the desk in the first place. It wasn't securely attached to the desk. And also, you could bring in Al Pacino, and have him reenact his scene from the center of a woman, and have him do a defense for the Sami incident. All right. Let me see if Al Pacino can join us. Wow. Let me tell you something. Every inch is a foot. Every foot's a yard. We're going to fight for every one of those inches, because that's the difference between women and losing. So basically, Dan, how it works is we're going to be picking teams that we do not think will be advancing. So one through four seeds, it's going to be more into golf scoring. So if you take a one seed, you'll start with minus four points, two seed minus three points. So the more aggressive you are, the more points in there for total points wins.

27:30Correct. And you want to be lower. So more in the negative or closer to zero is better. All right. And for each, like, if that team advances, you get a point added on. Okay. So we should start with the biggest loser. Todd, you go first. Wow. Wait, Paul. What do you mean loser? Like sports loser? Because I would throw my name in the right. No, just a loser. Oh, okay. Now I'm not in it. Yeah. All right. So Todd, who's your pick? Now this is the disappointment draft. They're going to disappoint. Yes. Okay. I'm going to go a little less brave with my first pick and say the Zags are going to bow out quickly. I know by going with a three of four seed, you get less credit. Just pick the two. The Zags will disappoint. Dylan, since I'm kind of picking for Marvin here, and I know he would be upset by this, I'm going to take you con. Wow. Wow.
