This is the DPHROM and Rothenburg Podcast. Let the wild rumpus begin! Catch us live weekday mornings from 6 to 10 AM on ESPN, New York. The MSG Network and Streaming Live on YouTube. This is DPHROM and Rothenburg on ESPN, New York. The MSG Network and Streaming Live on YouTube. And here we are. Gorgeousness with DNR. I'm fresh out of the shower. Look at the studio behind me. Look at this. That's great. How nice does that look? I look nice. I mean, here's the problem. Here's the problem. What's the problem? And this is not a negative towards you. It's just with these cameras. And when we go to our two shot, you don't get a chance to really see all the hard work that Sherry put into it. OK. It's a very small area.
OK. But when RJ goes back and takes like, you know, more of a pan of the room, then you get to see that, which you'll get plenty of today. Right. The nice to me when you start making one of your, like, great football points. We go to the Dave Rothenburg Superstar one shot. Now you get a chance to see what Sherry was busy doing. There it is. There it is. Look at that. How about that? I think we get something right in that area right there. I can't see you, so I don't know what you're saying. That space over to. So you're right shoulder. OK. Because when you get the superstar cam over over a little this way between like right there next to the hat. Yeah, hat and I even think right there right where I'm pointing. Yeah, I even think something if we put like you could even get like a giant. It's a giant life-sized player to put up a player. Stand it right up over there. Just get a player on a real player, but I mean, like like a Bobblehead. I got a life size. I got some Bobbleheads. That's what I'm saying. Maybe for tomorrow get some Bobbleheads, but this is nice. This is this is the way it's supposed to be.
It looks good. We feel good. Football's here. There's a like I don't say a Christmas to the air, but there's not really a crispness to the air. It was highest today, human yesterday. Yeah, I mean, it's it's tricky for us though, because when you wake up it's a little crisp and then by the time you walk out the door, it's yes, it's hot. So I got to tell you. I mean, always transparent with you guys. I'm kind of drenched by the way, seven o'clock today. Very excited about that. Talks and college football with her observations. Did it happen in Florida? Of course. That football game last night was not great. It was entertaining because it was competitive down to the end. That was not a great football game. Not a great football game. I mean, it is football though. And as much as we want to pretend that when, you know, preseason starts that it's great. And it is great because it's finally back. It's just it's different. It's week one. It's a super bowl rematch. It's the Super Bowl champs. You see the ring. You got the banner the whole deal. And then unfortunately for Seattle, right?
Sam Donald gets hurt immediately. I thought it was his knee. Initially, it sounds like it's a sip now and I'll have an MRI today. Well, they said it's not as bad as they originally thought it could be. Well, they don't like. So that's what we start. Chef to this morning. No, I know. Well, they went for a CT scan. So he actually had to leave and go to a hospital for a CT scan. Right. The results of that came back good for him. And now they got to go MRI to figure out exactly what's going on. I mean, potentially with his, his labor, his hip or whatever he did to it last night. Well, I mean, what a terrible loss in the Patriots awful. A lot of loss. You're winning the game. It's a backup quarterback. I mean, Drake May was, he was not good last night. And I know, AJ Brand got hurt, but you can't get hurt. You can't get picked off like against that. That's not even the full healthy Seattle defense. The terrible against last night. Yeah, bad decisions. I mean, Romeo Dobbs has to make that catch. I mean, let's call what it is. Jordan love does a real good job of kind of baiting him there into that interception.
But dobs. I mean, that's the first line, right? I do. Julian love, right? Yeah. I just enjoyed the love. No, no, I might have Julian love. Does a good job of baiting him there, but I mean, the Drake May makes a perfect throw. I mean, he actually takes a little bit off of it for Romeo Dobbs to catch and he drops it for first down. Oh, it's terrible. It's awful. Terrible. And then like, listen, it's week one, right? So I mean, the preseason is isn't what it used to be. You're trying to keep guys healthy. So guys aren't necessarily playing as much as they used to play. So the operations aren't great. I mean, you had Seattle. They got a first time play call or they got, you know, backup quarterback. They take it to lay a game. Right? They got a settle for a field goal to make a 13 10. Let us go on a touchdown there. And then you can't that is a, that's a guaranteed chip shot. 99.9% chance that game is going into overtime. You can't make that decision. Now I was not upset because I was happy the game was ending. It was starting to get late. And I was like, you know what? I want to, I want to kind of be done here.
And I didn't really care. I had no interest in who won the game. It's one of the very few games I watched. I didn't have a pick. I didn't have anything. I didn't care who won the game. But if you're, if you're Drake May, how do you do that? How do you, how do you just come on, man? It's your three for you now. You're in this Super Bowl. You're coming off a bad postseason. You have a guaranteed just about like you said, overtime chance. And you do that. Yeah, I mean, their kick it was missed from 50. Now it's listen, something could happen. But you're assuming that if we don't score a touchdown here, we'll kick the field goal and go into overtime. And now it's, it's still, it's still drew lock, right? I could take, he didn't make mistakes. He was fine, but it's still drew lock. You were runner up for the MVP last year. I mean, kind of like your chances, but yeah, he made, I mean, three, three picks. I mean, his bad is, I see how I had to do it. What, 10 penalties? So I mean, see how I don't know the number, but it was a, I was like eight to zero, dependencies.
Right. I think it was, I think it was 10. They had the roughing the punt. I mean, that was, they made mistakes also, but you're right. I mean, this is your three for Drake, may, he was runner up for the MVP. He got all the way to the Super Bowl. It wasn't great, by the way, in the, in the play, I like it was terrible. Right. It wasn't a, it wasn't, it wasn't what you saw from him in the regular season. And I think that's why a lot of people are pointing to their schedule. And why the Patriots aren't going to be good. I think those people are crazy. The schedule, they're going to be good. But I think the people that said they're going to take a step back. I don't think that's crazy right now. That's, that's a game you have to win. I know, but you say that, but they're making them big. I'm not talking about those people that are like, you know, record wise, may not, you know, might not look the same. Like I hear people saying that the Patriots is not going to be good. Oh, no, I think that's crazy. Right. The offensive line is clearly better. I mean, Verite Talker is good. Campbell's going to be a better player. No, there are offensive lines going to be good. I mean, that AJ brought it all, it felt to me like the game completely changed. And it's like he was a huge factor. But once they lost AJ Brown, like their passing game really took a hit. It really slowed down.
The Dubs did nothing. Not, he was a doctor never, the Dubs didn't have a catch last night. No, he, he had your backup running back. Well, he was fine. No, Steven was fine. Yeah, he was fine, but it seems fine. He waited for 51 yards. Yeah, caught a couple bit ball. Yeah, right. Less than three yards of carry. Like, but you know, I'm saying like so it's like that's not he's good. He's fine. But you have your number one receiver goes out. And I think a lot of us thought the same thing that, you know, AJ Brown with what he was, you know, the perception around AJ Brown with Jalen Hertz and the contentiousness of that relationship because he wasn't getting the ball enough or whatever. And now he's all excited. He always wanted to be a patriot. You were going to figure in week one that AJ Brown was going to be a big part of what they were going to do. Yeah, yes, right? Yeah. And I'm watching the game. I'm thinking to myself, maybe it's because Seattle's defense is so good that they're kind of slowing him down. But he was there even when he was played last night, AJ Brown, I'm sure you have it in front of you. He was very quiet. He didn't do a lot. No, three catches, 26 yards targeted four times.
That's that's nothing. Yeah, one of those was for 14. So yeah, I mean, it wasn't it's nothing. You're not you're not wrong. Like it wasn't it didn't feel like it was a great game. I mean, between the penalties for Seattle, not having Sam Darnold, you know, JNS is my time with Mike Tomlin likes to call him. I had the big big touchdown catch. You got to make that tackle. I mean, that's I get it's JSN, but what's the next I missed that tag? I just my big takeaway was is if Sam Darnold misses an extended period of time, like that's all you got to be going to miss some time. That's a huge problem. Giderian price is going to be a good running back. Like that kid. I mean, I know you end up taking two from everyone was talking about Jeremiah love. Giderian price is going to be a good running back. Well, he's got and you saw it from the first touch last night because I have a couple of fantasy teams. You too. Yeah. And the truth is, like whenever you have that, you pay a little closer attention, right? I mean, that's the truth. So I'm watching he gets that first carry. I was like, Oh, yeah, like he, he has that.
He's got the first. Yeah, exactly. He's got that burst and you can see like he hits the edge. He gets a little bit of space and he really is gone. I'm not going, but like he, he, he turns like what could be a three yard gain into a seven eight yard game. Like he's, he's got that, that afterburner and he's going to be good. I didn't, I felt like didn't play him enough though. I felt like every time he got cooking there, like they got him out of the game quickly. Well, he got a figure too though. I mean, you lost. That was one of the other things I think people would point to as to why, you know, we're so high on the Rams and maybe not talking about Seattle as much is I think there still is this perception of Sam Donald, right? And I think on top of it, they lost, they lost Kubeak. Yep. Like so, I mean, my big Donald is, you know, he's a defensive genius. But how does this affect now, you know, Sam Donald in that offense? And it's a young play call or two. I mean, there are a couple times where you got plays in real late and it looked like there's a chance there's going to be a delay game. But I mean, there are a lot of mistakes. But I think that Seattle, you're right.
Their defense isn't fully healthy. They're, they're a good team, but that free a very good team. But again, what you said to start the show is right. You got to tend nothing to lead. You have an opportunity to late in that game with the very least game time field going on taking it to OT and you throw a pick. That's, that's, Drake May needs to be better than that in that spot. That's, that's not second in the MVP voting quarter backing. No, it's just a bad decision. It's like trying to do too much. Like I mean, lift, lift the fight another down. Like that's not a, like you're fading away, you know, you're fading away and you make a throw. Either that's, you know, only where Mac Collins can catch it or it's, it's out of the end zone so you can kick the field goal and take this thing to OT. Yeah. 2333, 178 yards, three interceptions. QBR 54.9. That was not, it was not a good game. I mean, like you mentioned, he didn't play well. What you got is not the, not the end of the world. He didn't play well. It's weak one. It's in Seattle. It's a tough place to play. It's fine. But, you know, if you want to try to get back to where you were, Lester, because that AFC is loaded.
I mean, even that division, that could be a loss that comes back to be real costly against, you know, chasing Buffalo this season. Well, we're all expecting Buffalo to be good. I mean, very good. And then, I mean, you look at the next three opponents, you're, you know, home first Pittsburgh, you're at Jacksonville, you're at Buffalo. Give it, get home Pittsburgh. I mean, you should win that. Who knows, right? And then what is it at Jacksonville, at Buffalo? So they go at Buffalo week for four. Four. Wow. That's a massive early season game. Yeah, but you had one. It felt like you had one in the bank. Because you did. So because you did. I mean, that dobs drop. The dobs drop. I mean, you're up by what? They were up by what 10, right? That was 10. Nothing. I mean, the fourth down play that they get the touchdown on, it's just this. I don't care. But if that's my team, like if this is, if that's a New York team, or if we're doing Boston Sports Talk radio, I mean, you let it fly today. You'd be very upset. You'd be very upset.
And you also, I think, I think you're smart enough. It's to recognize that there have been a lot of conversations surrounding your team. Buffalo is going to be really good. The AFC, like you mentioned, is loaded. And to go into Seattle week one and have a real opportunity with Drew Locke as the quarterback for most of that game outside of the first drive. You need to win that game. You need to win that game. Because your schedule is difficult. Like I'm sitting here looking at it. I gave you those three. You got a bit of a deal. We reprieve now with Vegas at home and then the Jets. Then you're at Chicago. And then you're at Miami, which is fine. And then from week nine, from week nine to week 15, like buckle up if you're a Patriots fan because you got Green Bay Detroit, you're by at the Chargers Buffalo, Minnesota at Kansas City. I don't know that a lot of people said they're going to take a step back because of schedule. Right? So all they got to take a step back because they're not that good and whatever.
That schedule might make you take a step back. Well, but that's, which is fine. And I would, like, I can buy into that, right? Schedule wasn't that hard last year. This year, you know, it's a step up, right? And you look at these teams and everything else. But it was like, it wasn't just the schedule. It was like, yeah, they were schedule merchants and they're not that good and they're offensive line stings. It's like, okay, well, by the end of the year, the left tackle was hurt, right? He was the, he was the, what, 70% wherever he was. He was just right at all. Right. You just added AVT. Drake May did have a regular season where he was second in the MVP vote. Could have very easily won the MVP. But because of what you saw in the postseason, he wasn't that, you know, he wasn't as, as good as you've seen in the regular season. It wasn't just, it wasn't good. But they end up, you add AJ Brown, you're bringing dogs. I know they have a good game last night. You're bringing the full back from Buffalo and oh, by the way, when you look at their secondary game, I mean, they go on the best second there he's in football. Right. And you have a stud corner. I mean, against, against houses.
In this stud. I mean, and, and, and Vrayble is still a really good coach. So I don't know, just a dismissing the way people were dismissing them. It's like, okay, all right. Yeah, I think, I think that's crazy. I think a large portion of it too is, remember, they were so good in the regular season. It didn't look right in the postseason. I know they're winning games, but it didn't, it didn't look good. It looked like, okay, they're, they're just surviving these games. And then the last you saw, they were terrible. The time before that, they, they were, they were bad against Denver. That was not a well played football game. So, you know, the, the, the chargers game offensively, they didn't, they didn't look very good. I know, but it, which is fine. And I don't think you're wrong. But I don't, I don't want to use the word lazy. There have been a lot of, like, there have been a lot of instances where we've seen teams that, you know, get to, get to the postseason or get, you know, real late in a season where, you know, the offensive line, I don't care how good the quarterback is.
You've seen Patrick Mahomes with an offensive line that's all banged up, not be very good. Right? And you start talking about the deal with Denver's defense. I think the defense, I mean, they, they let the league in sex like that's a great defense. Right. Seattle's defense is a, is a really good defense. Oh, a great, but let me, let me ask you this. Did you watch New England and think yourself? That looks like a good football team in the postseason, especially offensively. No, I didn't, but I also, like, I feel like I'm also smart enough to recognize what they were dealing, dealing with injury wise. And also, you know, I don't, I don't know if it's fair to now take a guy in year two, right, that had a really good regular season and just expect him to jump in the postseason with a banged up offensive line and be awesome. I think you're fair. I think your point is very well taken. And I think it's an accurate point. I don't think they did themselves any favors last night. And I don't think I don't think the people I, and I also think people don't like the Patriots, which is fine, which is great.
Yeah, I guess they're not going to get the Patriots. I'm going to get the benefit of the day. Yeah, I guess you're right. I guess a totally different Patriots team, though. It's not, but I don't think people want to, I know, but I don't think people want to believe that they're back the way that they could potentially be back. Ravel is the head coach, McDaniel is the OC Drake may almost want an MVP in year two. Like it's like, come on. Really? Like you got fan bases that like, like the Jets fan bases like seriously. Well, you guys are, I can't believe you guys get, you get past Brady. And it's like, okay, well, now you'll get Drake May and Josh Allen. So enjoy yourselves. Yeah, great. And it's only a matter of time before Miami, go, you know, gets a elite court. I know a big time quarterback. Right. But the only, the only saving grace with Miami is they also have, they also have a level of this function that feels like could keep them from, you know, having some, they're very jetsy. Miami. Yes. Yes. Yes, I would agree with that. So, but, but I will say as much as I looked at that game last time, I'm like, not a great
game, kind of blend, kind of boring, not overly well played. It's still nice to have football back. I know, but I mean, tell me if I'm wrong as much as it is, as exciting as it is to have the 17th game, you know, we're going to have 18 games and all these different things and we're playing on Wednesday and no tomorrow, it's not tomorrow. Tonight is in Australia. All these great things. I feel like over the last, I mean, Arja, you could tell me, I don't know how many years, but for the first, I don't know what three, four weeks of the NFL season, I feel like we have this conversation a lot. Like what's the weekend? Just bad football. Football wasn't great, but hey, it's the NFL. It's bad. Great. Right. Well, even in RGH, I'm in the sack, even even like bad football, still great. No, I know, it feels like it's been since they changed the schedule, the way they changed the schedule and how teams have handled the preseason. Yeah, it hasn't been nearly as good as it used to be to start to start the season. Arja, identify yourself. Say good morning. Hi. How you doing? I'm good. How are you guys? Oh my God. George Lopez is in the studio. I'm not sorry. Sorry. There he is. Hi, Harv.
Raymond's at MSG meetings all day. Yeah, Ray's got a lot of big time meetings coming up. That's the excuse. All right. Is that how you use that? How day you shut your mouth? That's my fantasy football partner. We were going back and forth, making acquisitions yesterday. RJ, you see who's in big trouble in fantasy football this week already? You know, I did not know that the two of you were matched up. I was, I was making my way in this morning and I, I was at my walk and I'd finish my, my work on my phone and I'm like, oh, let me check some fantasy scores. I don't have anything going in our league, but I was like, let me see what else is going on. Right. What do I come across? My, my good buddy Dave and my two buddies Rick and Ray facing off week one. Yep. Week one, baby. And a lot of action already. A lot of action. A lot of action. Yeah. Well, you at, you at, um, AJ Brown, which was costly for you. Yeah. What's going on with your boy, uh, Roma Dunez, though? Uh, let's, listen, if we don't play a Dunez, eh? We'll, we'll move on and we'll play. I don't know. Yeah. Oh, you know, like a Wilson or Parker Washington, we have, we have choices this day.
RJ, you know, it's great. I'll tell you what's great. Dave is going to be in a huge pickle here by Sunday night. Why? I got George Pickens on your team. There's a real. Oh, there's a real chance in this matchup that George Pickens could be the difference between you win and week one or lose. That's not at the limit at all. I hope George Pickens goes zero for zero. Yes. Is it you can, you can, I'll tell you what? Watch your bench. But why would I do that? Why, what do I think you don't like them that much? Benchham. What's that? No, but you're, you're, you're, putting words in my mouth that I'm not saying. I didn't say I don't like him. I think he's very good. I'm saying I would be fine if he doesn't have a good game. If it means that the giants win and I lose fantasy. Well, here's a thing though. And this, I don't know how this will play out. But this could very much be a reality. Let's just say, Rick leads by, I don't know, three point nine points. I hope I lose. Well, there's a world though where you lose and the giants lose. That trick gets a little sketchy. Oh, that's what that's where Raymond is at his best.
Oh my goodness. I would get it. Why would you even put that into the, into the, obviously, I'm to say it. Like why would you even throw that out there? Because when we, when we factor that seems, that seems awful to do. I mean, it looks like you're pretty good shape early at. But what we, what we, what we, what we, what we, what we, what we, what we, what we, what we, what we, what kind of, what kind of things your team, what team doesn't kind of stick? It's not very good. It seems fine. Okay. Who has a better team? Hi. Champions or team DPHR, which by the way, can you, I mean, team DPHR really? You're not team champions. What do you mean? Three years ago, well, we won and then we've held on to it. Now, gunling one back to back champions, whoever, everyone should be team champions. But before gunling one, who won me? Yeah, three years ago, right. So we hang on to that moniker. It feels like you're hanging on to the past. Hey, Uncle Rico, let it go. Okay. You know what? I'll tell you what, you change from team DPHR, which is the, I mean, just, it's an embarrassment of a name. I will change from champions. How about you pay off the, the bet? And then I'll change my name. I don't can't be changing name.
See, it's only a box on you. By the way, somebody did the research yesterday. Someone did the legwork and I don't know how accurate it is, but they looked up the, the new New York State license plate availability. And, you know, what the one that was proposed is available. Yeah. But you guys say nothing about it. I made the offer. I'll wait to hear a response. I'm not going to keep knocking on the door. The offer has been made when you're ready to be your decision. You know, let me know first offer. When we liked it, there's the first offer we liked it. Okay. I think we're, we're, we're waiting to see if there's anything better that comes out. All right. I'll give you a couple more options later today. Can't bully us into just making. I'm bullying. Feels like it's nice generous offer. It wasn't nice. I'd get it with it. It was, it was a nice offer. It was a legitimate offer. It wasn't like, oh, come on. Well, this is where you shine, not paying off the original bet, but eventually coming through with something that is, is very interesting. Right. And then pretending he's a hero. We're doing it. It's the people that think that it's not necessarily me.
It's the people that think it because you make them think it. That's a lot of power than if I can make them think that. All right. Before we break, come back, get your calls. 809193776. Why don't you tell me about your, your back issues and how they can be solved? I got all sorts of back issues. I know you do all sorts of back issues. And luckily for me, my good friends at NSPC, they're going to take care of me. But I have to get a number I first, which has been a problem. NSPC brain and spine surgery is the largest independent neurosurgery practice in the New York, Metual Area, seven local, seven local offices on Long Island in Manhattan. And since 2024, Castle Conley has ranked NSPC as the number one neurosurgery practice group in the entire state. NSPC is focused on providing personalized care to request a consultation call 5169391852, where you can visit NSPC.com to learn more. That's nice. Well done, Mouville. You're a really good reader. A really good reader. That wasn't a great reader, don't feel like. Yeah, but your reading skills are very, very good. This is the DPH Rowan Rothenburg podcast. Let the wild rumpus begin. Catch us live weekday mornings from 6 to 10 a.m. on ESPN, New York, the MSG network and streaming live on YouTube. This is DPH Rowan Rothenburg. I'm very excited for something. You have to have dark play as well as you could possibly play and you need everything else to fall into place. I have the giant. There's a wild part. I cannot know. Pam Jackson, dark and elite neighbors. Those guys are all healthy. They're going to be a playoff team. They're going to be a playoff team with those guys. They healthy and play the majority of the season. I think they can go to the playoffs.
Giant win. Giant win. You're for it. Naked or gazmic. You name it would be wild on this. Is DPH Rowan Rothenburg on ESPN, New York, the MSG network and streaming live on YouTube? All right. That's one hour in the books, three hours to play with. Then we start out and we're very excited about this because we want to get more Instacallist football on the show. We love it, but I feel like we don't discuss it as much as we probably could. We're going to change that and we're going to change that on a weekly basis. Heather Dinnich now joins the show. Heather, good morning. We're thrilled to have you on every week during this college football season. Good morning, John. And how are you? Welcome to my house. Oh, thank you. Thanks for having us into your home. So we're thrilled to have you on the show. There's so many different areas we want to get into here. Let me start with the Michigan of it all from last week. So it's kind of a two-part question. What's your take on what happened and how does Michigan move forward? Do you still think they have any chance this year, even though they won?
Are they in massive trouble right now? They're in massive trouble because they don't have good quarterback play, right? I mean, let's be real about the situation. It does not seem like they're a top 25 team. I did not have them in my top 25 when I did it. As far as the clock goes, man, I can talk about this forever. So people don't want to hear this. But the difference in what the officials looked at and what you saw on your couch is a broadcast speed. There's a quarter of a second delay in the broadcast feed. So if you're asking the question, do the officials get it right? The answer is yes, based on what they were looking at, which is the Hawkeye system and the Big Ten's Replay system that runs through Rosemont, Illinois. So by NCAA rule, Bang Bang Play, the video that they saw, they made the call. There was a second on the clock. And people are saying, well, that's not what I saw in my couch.
Well, that's why the Mac is saying you've got to use the protocol that says use the broadcast feed. This is where the discrepancy was. That's what people don't understand and don't care to understand because everybody's watching it on their couch. And that's not what you see with your own eyes, the same thing the official saw. And I get that. I understand that. But those guys on the field, they did their jobs. And if you were looking at what they were looking at, which is what the Big Ten released. And Kudos to the Big Ten for the transparency. Because that is not what that conference usually does. So if you watch that, I think that's pretty hard to argue. The Big Ten's feed. Now Heather, if they had made a bigger deal, if the Mac had come out earlier and not accepted the explanation, would this be something that they could potentially have a problem with? I mean, they want the result of the game change. If I find that hard to believe now, that's not going to happen. But if it was something, if it was a bigger deal was made of it, when it happened as opposed to them kind of accepting it originally,
do you think that this would have been a bigger controversy than it is now? I don't know how it could be a bigger picture. Right. Because I feel like we've been talking about it non-stop. But I understand that's the other question people have. Is what changed over 72 hours or whatever it was? And I talked to Mid-American Conference Commissioner John Steinbrecker after the second release came out saying they didn't follow the protocol. And I asked him that question. I said, what changed? And he said, well, we had more time to go back and gather more information. And over those days, we learned that the big tendon follow the review protocol. Right. So the beef is within the system, not the call itself. That's what people need to understand. And I agree that everyone should be using the same thing that NFL does. Use what people see at home so that there are no conspiracy theories floating around that there's 15 clocks and some underground thing happening behind the scenes.
Because there's not the one clock that is the official game clock is the big one on the stadium board. So that's the one that everyone's supposed to use. Unless God forbid, the power goes out and then you got to have it on the field by an official. Oh, just great stuff. College football making, you know, real waves in week one. All right. So speaking of week one, LSU, big winner, Clemson, big loser. Where is LSU great is Clemson awful? Or are we going to meet in the middle and maybe both are true? Yeah, I think good reporter will tell you the truth. I always lies somewhere in between my friend. I put LSU at number four in my top 25 this week. I think that is that is a fantastic football team. But what's most impressive about what I saw, I was there in Baton Rouge. And the thing that impressed me most is the fact that there are 48 transfers on that roster and Lane Tiff and got them to play like it was November. I mean, Clemson looked horrible.
They're not belong on the field with LSU. I mean, the speed, the talent, all of it up front. They just got outplayed out coach. I mean, the play calling for LSU, the execution of it. It was it was all perfect for the Tigers. And so I do think that they are a national title contender. They should be. That's what Lane Kippen was hired to do when it yesterday. But also think that Clemson asked the incorrect because I thought they were going to be one of the most improved teams in the country. And it's time to ask the question of Davos Wini's right guy for them. Heather, is it as simple? I mean, the way they explained it is is that he just hasn't been aggressive as aggressive in the portal as these other teams. Is that simpler? Is it just time for him to maybe move on? Well, that's part of it. But I mean, guys, listen, everybody knows that a national title contender has a Heisman trophy quarterback. You're talking about this year, you look at Ohio State, Texas. They have multiple Heisman contenders on their team.
Clemson hasn't had a quarterback since Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watte, right? And you've got a revolving door at coordinator. I mean, Venables and Chad Morris together way back in the day. That was a dream team. And Davos surrounded himself when he was winning national titles with coordinators who were running the show and they were awesome. And it feels like since then, you have the combination of quarterback, portal, staff, and all of those things. And that does go back to the head coach. All of those things not working together adds up to what I saw on Saturday. Heather did it with us here on ESPN, New York, and MSG television breaking down all things college football. I mean, the first game of the year was Clemson and LSU. The next game of the year is this weekend, Ohio State and Texas. Boy, it's hard to pick against Ohio State. The games in Texas, the quarterback place should be elite. There's so much NFL talent. Who do you like going into this game on Saturday? When in doubt, go with the home team.
I've had Texas, my number one preseason team. And the only difference between Ohio State and Texas is home field advantage to me right now. But I will say last week for Texas, you know, it was hard to tell much about any of these teams who are putting their backup quarterbacks in on the third quarter, right? But Sark said after that game, they've got to do better on the offensive line. They got to do better running the ball. But when you see Arch thrown into Cam Coleman, their transfer wide receiver who came in, Ryan Wingell, I mean, they're running backs. Hollywood's mother's again. There's an example of the transfer portal making a difference in like the first five plays when we're going back to the Davos swinging conversation, right? LSU's transfer portal. I mean, it's just glaring how much of a difference that can make. And you look at the Indiana Hooters last year, winning the national title, piecing together a roster like that. That's the difference right now. Heather, can I ask you this? So just getting back to LSU for a quick second and then you're all impressive when everything else.
What exactly is the argument from the SEC about having those two players that were at NFL training camps play at LSU? Because before, like, I mean, just with my experience in hockey, it was more about the money, right? You couldn't have any. Like if you were getting paid, you were no longer eligible because you weren't in amateur. But now that's all changed with NIL and guys have agents that are getting paid, you know, paid millions and millions of dollars. Yeah, it's a fundamental and philosophical argument as much as anything else because it's about eligibility and eligibility window. And Greg Sanky is big on the development of players. And the more you bring guys back, you risk A, having to bump somebody off the roster to make a spot for them, which to be fair, Lane Kiven had room for these guys if they were going to come back. But that's not always necessarily the case. But also the trickle down effect to the high school level cannot be underestimated. You got guys who are committing to these programs thinking they are going to be the next tight end at LSU and then all of a sudden it's like, oh, no, wait, wait a minute, you know.
And so the reason the NCAA didn't grandfather that class of 2223 in to this new eligibility rule is because teams have moved on. Guys had gone. Cautious had recruited. Everybody's moving forward. And then you impact not only guys who are on the roster and have been working all summer for these spots, but kids in the high school level who have committed. And so it's a big picture of holistic developmental issue in terms of eligibility. Can Michigan beat Oklahoma this weekend? Or is that just forget about Michigan now this season? I'm going to find out. I mean, look, we always over react on week one, but I didn't see anything in that Michigan game that leaves me to believe they're going to hang with the Summoners. I really like John Matier, the Oklahoma quarterback. You know, I had a chance to talk to him this summer. And then they measured his grip strength, which is a really cool stat. And it's just got so much stronger from the injury that he had last year. And you know, when he's on, he's on. I mean, he was in the high-zemone conversation before
he got hurt last year. And if they can put it all together and get the pieces in place around him, that's a team that can surprise some people. They're scheduled though is so hard. That's my only reservation. This is a bust win for the Summoners because of what they have coming down the stretch. Heather, how impressed are you with Miami? Man, I better than last year. They are so good. Malachi Tony is a lexeric Darian men's that is in the high-zemone conversation immediately. I mean, I know Stanford was depleted, but I don't care who you are. You go 2,500 miles away from your school and put a show on like that. That's impressive start to the season. So I have Miami. I want to say number three. Yeah, I put up up them up to number three, right behind Ohio State and Texas in my top 25 this week. It's them and everybody else in the ACC. I don't know why any month we're going to leave the ACC conference if you're Miami because you own it right now. Noter Dane, like people hate them, people love them. Nobody's neutral on the fighting Irish.
I didn't think they played particularly well and still won the game by 30 over Wisconsin. Are they national championship contenders realistically this season? Yeah, because they were on two last year. They're one and out. They found a way to win. And I think we are watching Marcus Freeman grow as a head coach every single year. And you know, every year they've lost the game that they shouldn't have early in the season, whether it's Louisville, Northern Illinois, whatever it might be. This year they got it out. And I think that's important. I mean Oregon fans like we did too. I know, I know, but Notre Dame, if you just looked at that score, you had no idea what happened to the first half. And first half was not good. It was ugly. It was like, oh, here we go. And at the same time, Ole Miss was fighting with Louisville too. So I think Notre Dame, with that secondary in particular, that defense. And if they get that ground game going, they're going to be tough to stop. Heather, Dennis, you're on the show. Heather, I was reading your article yesterday about the
expansion of the playoff. Are we starting to get some real traction into potentially having 24 teams in this playoff? Yes. So what happened is the CFP officially opened the negotiating window with ESPN, which means they are going to find out how much money they can get for a 2014 playoff, which signals the greatest interest yet. But that does not mean this is going to happen next year, because the example I was given is you want to move from your house. You put your house on, you know, for sale. And if you're not getting an offer that is suitable, then you're not going to move immediately. So they're testing the waters in a way. But if they get the money that they want, this thing is going to happen. But it's a lot of money that they're going to expect for this, because those powerful conference championship games are going to have to go away in a 2014 playoff.
I mean, the SEC Championship game alone is between 80 to 100 million dollars. The big 10 is about 50 million dollars. And that's not including ticket sales, game day sponsorships, all the other revenue that those games drive, which is huge. So can you compensate for the loss of that and make money in a 2014 playoff? I don't know the answer for that. 2014's oh my god. That's a lot of a lot of. Yeah, right. But I mean, the cool thing about it, though, is you would have you would have the schools, I think, Heather and the first couple rounds of the playoff would be home stadiums on campus. Yeah. That's right. And you guys know, just in the 12 team playoff, those first round home games are unlike anything else. It's just all. Yeah, that is cool. What's Alabama this year? I mean, they're not they're not being discussed. It's like one of those teams anymore, but how good can they be? Well, I mean, TBD on those guys, they look pretty good. Keylon Russell and it's Keylon, by the way,
not Keylon. It's Keylon. Keylon Russell, they're starting quarterback. He played well, but they've got to do that. We got to see more, right? Against SEC competition, but I think it was a very encouraging start if you're an Alabama fan. I want to say I had them 10 in my pre seat or my top 25 right now, but going into the season when they didn't know what their quarterback was, I think I had them like 15, 16, 17. So they're moving up, but as long as they get strong quarterback play and they can run the ball, the key thing. The one thing they could not do last year with consistency is a run the ball minus three rushing yards against Georgia and the SEC championship game. Like, come on. Yeah, the last one for me. So you had mentioned Oregon. I mean, just quickly just your thoughts on because it feels like it's like at a certain point, it's like, okay, it's now or never like it. Are they going to like emerge as a real team that can win a national championship here is it feel like this year's that for them or no? Yeah, it could be it should be. Dan Laning is one of the most intense coaches that I've ever seen,
but listen guys, I like USC. No one is talking about USC. I really like Jay and my, oh, I love the running game. Their defense is better. So yes, but it's not going to be easy. Interesting stuff. So Heather, I get emails all show long and I just got an email from a listener. Heather is the best. What a great addition to the show. Kudos to whoever. And it hurts the rotation. So people are very excited. This is going to be a weekly occurrence on the show. Oh, well, thank you so much. I really appreciate that. I love talking football. I'm so happy to be talking football for a bit and not all this other stuff. It's it's very heavy, but it's it's refreshing. It was so good for my soul to be in Baton Rouge and I'm so excited for the rest of the season because we think we know what's going to happen. No one has any idea. It's going to be great. Coach football is great. It really is. All right. You're terrific. We appreciate you. Enjoy the weekend and we'll talk to you next Thursday morning. That's good. Thanks guys. Great stuff. That is Heather
Denich. She's really good. I should the best. Really good. Listen, I didn't want to say anything just because I don't know, I did feel like we had too many questions, but when we have when we have our meetings leading into the football season, it was a unanimous it was a unanimous vote on the show that if if we were going to start doing more college football that Heather would be the one that we wanted. She's great. You know, I just got another email. Guys, I just wanted to send a message saying Heather was a phenomenal guest. What a breath of fresh air. Thanks so much for having her on. Hope she continues to be on the show. Kudos to both of you. I love you guys. That's Melissa Mancusa. Well, Melissa, every Thursday at seven o'clock, Heather Denich will be on the show. We'll review what we've just seen in college football. I will preview the week to come. She's so funny too because when I watch her, so she do, they don't hurt Paul will get, you know, will be on get up. Right. But a lot of what they talk about is like she said, it's like the controversies or it's what happened with Michigan and in the time or what's going on with LSU. And you can just tell that she just loves to talk football. And you've done enough TV where you
realize, like, I mean, you get at what two questions usually and you get 30 seconds to talk about it. You don't have the amount of time on TV that you have on radio. All right. There's no way you're getting into all like what you think of Miami. How about this, Gary? Good. This is so now you get a good 20 minutes. It's just I love it. Chop it up. I love it. And this week is, I mean, let's be honest. Week zero, we're just excited because football is back. Wasn't great. Week one, there were a couple of games, but it wasn't this is this is the first like week. Like, wow, there's some really good get like, oh, how does he Texas? He is a great game. I got it. I got to think though, like as they get into this, should we have 24 teams and 24 teams, you know, how much money we can make. Like if you're ESPN and you have, you know, just with the contract that they signed, right, you got to go to ESPN first before anything, you know, is decided that if you do get those extra games now, I'm sure the way with all the different, you know, streaming with net, all these different, you could probably sell those games to different networks for tons of money. I would think I mean,
there's a lot of money in live sports television now. Huge. And you talk net for the game tonight. I forgot his on Netflix. Netflix. Yeah. Yeah. So there's Netflix. There's prime. There's, I mean, you know, peacock. There's so many different outlets. Yes, absolutely. Thanks for listening to the D.P. H. Rowan, Rothen Brood podcast. Dang it. Looking for more access to the show. Why? Because you know why follow us at ER on ESPN. You had a read like half an hour ago and I missed it. Oh, no. Yeah. You didn't say anything. And it's totally on me and I feel badly and for that, I'm sorry. I think you don't just say sorry. I mean, I do like going on. Listen, when I make this day, I didn't I didn't have the page of my reads up and ready to go and and I messed up. So I'm sorry about that. I'm in so much pain right now that I didn't even realize. Well, you know what the problem with you is you have a clear injury. Yeah. It probably needs surgery. Yep. You desperately need an
MRI. You won't go get an MRI. And you look, well, I'm very busy. You don't feel well. You're unwell. You need to take care of the MRI. Yeah, but I feel like if I could walk to where I need to go to, I'm fine. But you're not you're not fine. I'm not fine. But I if I can get there, I can do it as opposed like if I was just I couldn't move at all. Right. You're not better written. But do you consider yourself if I told you I had to live like this for a year, would you be like, okay, great. No. No. Go get an MRI. Yeah. I would have an SPC in your back pocket. They'll do whatever you are. They're done. They set me all up. Let's set me all up. I'm all like I'm doing. Schedule I scheduled the appointment. I know. I'm going to do it today. I promise you want me to call for you. No, I'll call today. It's one of the things I'm great at. I'm great at setting appointments. I'm going to set the appointment today. And then hopefully get this thing taken care of. All right. Can you as we sit here talking about your back ailments and ending the MRI and how great they are and how quickly they'll get you in for an appointment. Can you tell me about an SPC? I absolutely will. I'd be having great love to. NSPC brain and spine surgery is the largest independent
neural surgery practice in the New York, Metswaria with seven local offices on Long Island and in Manhattan. Since 2024, Castle Conley has ranked NSPC as the number one neural surgery practice group in the entire state. The neurosurgeon that NSPC have more specialized training and are leaders in minimally invasive treatment for neck, back and brain conditions. Advanced minimally invasive techniques provide safer, more effective surgical options. NSPC was the first practice on Long Island to adopt routine collaborative care for complex spinal surgeries. Most patients are seen in you how cool this within 48 hours and only an experienced NSPC neural surgeon will consult with you and perform your surgery as an independent private practice. NSPC is focused on providing personalized care to request a consultation call 516-939-1852 or you can visit nspc.com to learn more. So of that whole read, Castle Conley stands out. Yeah. Also the fact that the 48 hour rule they call you for an appointment within four or you see them within 48 hours. Did I ever tell you the story? I might have been like, God's repetitive and that's fine. Would that like you criticize me every
time I tell a char story? But I feel like once you tell it, it's the same story like over 15 times. It's an uncle, right? It's enough. So I might have told you this and if I did, but it's quick anyway. So I thought I had a strep throat like five years ago, maybe even more, seven years ago, right? So I called the doc and my primary care. I was like, you know, tell them I think I have a strep. I have to come in. Okay. We can squeeze you in. Great. A week from Thursday. I was like, are you? Are you kidding me? I said, a week from Thursday. I said, let me tell you something. If you don't get me in today to see the doctor, I'm done. I said, I like the doctor. I can't and that was it. They said, no, week from Thursday. And I've never seen that doctor again, switched to my current primary care. And that was it. You know who I don't have a problem with? Getting employment. And as you see, or my pediatrician. Okay. So by the way, and this is not just me saying this because I'm doing reads. They're actually like, they're going to help me with my back is when I got a chance to sit down with all the doctors
and you just go back and forth about all the different things. Right. The more impressive thing for me was outside of the 48 hours was when I, in the part of the read where it's like, know the actual neurosurgeon will consult with you and be the one doing the surgery. Yep. Like they happen when Cassie was pregnant. Like we went in and the anesthesiologist came in and there was a person standing next to him. I'm like, who's this person? He's like, well, he's learning and he'll be doing. And I was like, no, no, no, no, no, no, maybe on some, like, we're not doing the learning thing today. I don't have a problem when it's like, I'm your anesthesiologist and this guy will be watching to see how it's done properly. That's great. Yeah. Not, hey, Steve's never done this before and he's going to run point on your surgery. You're on your anesthesia. No, no, that's not happening. Yeah. Not happening. Well, it was the last time you've seen the had, did you think about going to the pediatrician for the back issue right now? No, I didn't think that's not his expertise. Oh, right. No, of course. Right. Yeah. Of course. But you need like a throat culture or something like that. Oh, yeah. You're
anything doubt. Yeah. So a throat. Right. Yeah. congested. Right. Yeah. If you need him to go into your nose, if he put a, like a, a toy car into your nose or something like that. I am cough. I am so confident in this doctor that if you went to see him one time, you would get ready your own primary care. No, no, RJ is the best. You have two young children. You bring them to the pediatrician. Would you ever go to the pediatrician as your main source of a doctor? I would not. Something amazing just happened better on the table at the pediatrician. Something amazing just happened. What? I don't know where. Like, who is that old dressed up? Rick. Why? Don't hear. Why? Why is he in a suit? Does he have something for the devil's today? He's got a big fancy event. Oh, that's why Santiago is not here. No, he's got the MSG stuff that's showing him. MSG meeting. It's like the upfronts they're showing Donnie off. He's dancing in the background. It was show. Tony. No, because you know why it was his anniversary. He's lighting the legs. I can tell. Oh, is that it? He got the poison out. Yes, he did. He had good for you, Donnie. A little freak, LaGreca. What a great man. Can Donn. Does he have a minute to hop on air?
Is he got to run out? That's what we're working through right now. I'm going to donate my headset because that's that's what needs to happen here. Don't mess up his hair. It's, I mean, it's one of the great is the silver fox. Yeah. Is there is gorgeous. Gorgeous. Hello. Hi, Donn. How are you? Good. How are you doing really well? Thank you. You know what, Don? You know what I can do right now? Because we're going to talk some giants, right? Okay. We can make this the big blue report brought to you by King Sohion is what we can do. Nothing blue on Don these days after his anniversary. I can tell you that. What number anniversary was this for you? 21. I'll say what we say you and I are right there. I'm 22 year 21. Yeah. So the 9905. He took Nancy to AC. That's right. We saw fluffy Gabriel and glaciers. Oh yeah. Little Gordon Ramsay restaurant afterwards and then the other. Oh yeah. Who watched the kids when you guys took this little my sister in law. Oh that's Susan. Look at you. So Donn. I'd like to ask you. What do you think about the giants this year? I'm very excited. I
think this is an eight or nine win team. You have like chef there are a loft ski shraeger. St. This is going to be a playoff team. I'm not there, but I'm really excited for giants football again. I'm excited because it's going to be fun. It's going to be entertaining. They're going to be well coached. They're going to be back on the rails. That's all I wanted to see. Get out of relegation. Get back into the NFL. And this talk about playoffs. I don't get it. We had shraeger on yesterday. You think so. They could be a playoff team. Adam Schefter's been saying it. Yeah. I guess if things break well, you know, Sam Darnold's injury is really bad and Seattle's going to fall out of it. You know, there's four new teams. I guess every year they weren't the playoffs last year. They made it this year. But I think Dallas is going to be one of those teams that's going to make it that didn't last year. You know, there's Detroit. Detroit could definitely be that kind of a team. But to go to 10 wins, I think it's going to take 10. I just have too much respect for the power in the NFC to think that nine wins is going to be enough. And I just can't see going from three to seven wins. What people are doing is they're taking every one of those
tough losses last year and making them wins because the coaching is better. But you know, in sports that doesn't work that way. You know, there's a lot of things that have to go into improving by that much. If they do it great, I'd be happy. I'd be excited. But I just want to play fun football, play meaningful games in December. I'm not going to go in with an expectation of postseason. I can't do that. Yeah. I was surprised to what I heard shraeger say that on your show yesterday. Well, you impressed it. All that I knew that it was 21 years. That's how that's a good kind of avid listener. I am to D. H R in the afternoons. I know you're an avid listener and we look forward to your texts that rip into Peter. Yeah. I say we're working at maybe like a 50% tile of being able to air them. Yeah, probably you're probably right around there. You know, and if I if I adhere to management, probably lower it to about 35. But for our times that we do take chance. 50s because you're you're aggressive. I'm a little I think I'm a little aggressive. And then we sometimes we'll clean up a word or two. Yeah, you sure heard him yesterday. Yesterday, they almost got dumped. I don't think I've ever heard anyone tiptoe the line of being dumb. I was I was so proud of myself. Dave, I
don't know if you caught it. I did not tell me. Well, because listen, you guys make fun of my sex life and it put it's it's deadly accurate. Allen's on the other end. I mean, a fur guy that's been married as long as him. He's got he's it's amazing that he lives in that kind of a world that I can't possibly live in. And most people with kids can't. So he was just talking about, you know, the anniversary and everything. I said, listen, you know, it all it takes is a glancing blow of a block to stop me from getting true true penetration. And that's the thing that's a football right? Trying to get to the quarterback. Trying to penetrate the quarterback and I and oh, you know, I'm not LT. Ellen's LT. He's fighting through the running back. He's fighting through the offensive lineman and the tight end to get to the quarterback. Me. I got this, you know, pesky little scatter back throws a glancing blow and I'm down. And I don't get there. That's a shame. But when I do get there, the quarterback goes down. Okay. Is that all right? Is that
any of that dumb? Did all that make the air? RJ? You're on the morning. That's me. We have a wide parameter of things that we discuss here on the show. Yes. I'll tell you what I don't like. I don't I think this running back room. I'm led by cam scataboo's a little scary. Really? I don't think it's great by any stretch, but I think it's fine. Well fine is not what is going to be working for a giant team that I think is going to be running the ball more times than most NFL teams. I mean, they don't have an exceptionally deep wide receiver room, right? Me with Barrios still out. You're looking at four guys. One of them is the old man in the sea in OBJ and you've got a kid in fields who I think is really had a tremendous camp, but you still a bit of an unknown, a new player, Mooney. And then you've got neighbors who may not be 100% to start the season. I threw this out earlier this week. I want to see if you guys agree. I think if I had to bet, I'd say likely has the most receptions on the team. Oh, I think that's
a very fair wager. I think he, I think he's really good. He's been, you know, kind of kept under wraps and in Baltimore with with Mark Andrews. And I think he's going to be a big time security blanket. I think he, I think 75 catches is very realistic for likely. So this is, you know, this is a team that's going to look a lot like again, in theory, the giant Super Bowl teams, you know, run the ball, utilize the tight end and then use the wide receiver when necessary. The difference with this team and the Eli teams, you'll get a lot more production with the legs of Dart than you're able to get with Manning, but that's what this team is going to be. They'll be kicking at old school and the running back room is going to have to be better than fine if this team is going to win North the seven games. So that's what's a little scary to be out of the scattered who's fine. You're right. But fine to me can be scary considering how they're going to want to go producing points on this team. Well, the only thing I'd say to that is last year, the running back room was was hardly great. And I think they were what fifth in the NFL in rushing. So I don't know. And that was what scatterbook getting hurt. Right. The scatterbook got hurt and was a lot of a time room trace. He
was now like seemingly the third back on this team. The giants have real issues. I think stopping the run as a question. Yeah. I think the second there is a question. I think, Oh, better. You feel better about it though the way their camp was. No. I feel so much better about things. And not only do I feel better about things, I think even if they were to have a season where it's like, all right, they win six or seven, I still feel firmly that they're heading in the right direction. Well, but you're talking about doubling your win total. You know, and I asked, I'm going to ask Rick this. I asked Alan. I was a little surprised by his answer quite frankly. How would you feel about the jets of John Harbour? Was their head coach? I have a completely different look. Right. Yeah. I was I was like, yeah, maybe he's worth one more win. I'm like, are you kidding me? Crazy. If you if if Ricky answer, but if you had John Harbour over Aaron Glenn, you can you could realistically feel like they can make the playoffs. Yeah. I mean, listen, if you had, I mean, if you had the coach, now you answer that one giant question. I think what makes the jets situation so weird is you don't, you know, Smith's going to be 36. So he's not your quarterback. And all science point being the good head coach after what you saw last season.
Right. And now you add somebody you know who's a good head coach. Yeah. Who's naturally going to raise your floor and make you functional. But I just don't know how deep the giants are. Talent wise, I think there's talent there, but is there enough depth? And in your division twice Philadelphia two times Dallas, Washington, you know, getting their quarterback backs going to be tough. Listen, I just respect the NFC. I respect the schedule. I just want to get back to not being embarrassed by this team. And John Harbour instantly does that. And then we'll say, but they got to be two and two guys going into that Washington game, have to at least be two and two. I'll accept oh and two because that's a tough start. Then when you know, you'll be Tennessee, you beat Arizona. And if you could be washing to be three and two and then New Orleans. Yeah. And then you're on your way. If they're three and one going into the Washington game, that would be that would be crazy. That would be anniversary time. You're listening to DPH Ron Rothenberg on the HSQ WCBS FAM HD 2 in New York. Yes.
Then it would be anniversary time for all. What do you think about the about the Jets of season? I think they'll be better. I don't know if their coach is good enough. I just don't. Now was last year unfair. Sure, but it still happened and there were times he looked like he was completely lost. Now he's going to have to focus on defense. So is that going to take him away from the objective and that being a really good head coach? So with the unknown and head coach, with the complete unknown at quarterback, what could you expect? I mean, it's a quarterback league. It's a head coach league and those are two gargantuan question marks. They've got talent. They've got weapons on the offensive side of the ball. I think defense, they could be fun to watch. But if Gino Smith is going to be what he was in Vegas and Aaron Glenn is not a good quarterback. Guys, how are they going to be any different than they were last year? How they won't they won't. I mean, if Gino Smith is the same version that he was last year and you can blame, you can blame Vegas all you want and chip killing everything else. I mean, if you get that version to him, they're not going to be very good. My only concern, I think you
were listening to the show because you guys talked about this is I think everyone just assumes that Aaron Glenn's seat is one of the hottest seats in the NFL. But then you go, Gino Smith is going to be 36 and now Kade Club mix is going to be the backup. Me personally, and this is not in like an opinion. If I'm Aaron Glenn and I feel like my job is on the line and I have to win football games, there is no way I go into the season with that as my quarter. No way. No way. I brought it up and I gave you guys credit because I thought it was a really fun conversation. Everybody believes he's on the hot seat. I'm kind of with you. And one of the reasons why is financial. You know, Wink Barton Dale is not the defensive coordinator of the Jets because let's be honest. What he didn't want to pay him. Right. And the reason why Glenn's doing it is because he gave big time money to Glenn. Reports always got another three years after this left on his contract. So you telling me that he is going to fire Glenn. Pay a big money offer to Tom Linner, whoever still having to pay Glenn all the money that he sunk at the facility after getting the F. I don't think he has an appetite to just have Aaron Glenn sit there and do nothing
for three years and get paid. Maybe a revolt. Can you imagine what the fan base will do if the Jets go four and 13. The guy soils himself again and they bring him back for another season. Yeah, but don't you see this quarter back? Yeah, but they'll sell on the fact that oh, well, Gino Smith was bad and in in club Nick and in a lot of fall on Mugi. I'm telling you, if Gino is bad, I'm a Mugi fan. But how would it look if Gino is bad? And he's got Justin Fields on his resume. He'd have Gino Smith on his resume. He'd have not getting a veteran to back up Gino Smith on his, I mean, that's that's that's bad. It's a bad job. You know, so let's face it, Douglas lost his job. Why? Because he picked Zach Wilson. Right. So not being able to figure out the quarterback despite all the talent the Jets have. And I think he's had good drafts. He's made good trades. I thought that trade with Indianapolis was a good one. If he can't figure out the quarterback, he's going to be out of a job too, guys. It's the same old same old with this Jets T Rick. I feel bad for you, man. It's been 15 seasons, Donnie. But you could have made a better choice when you came here. It's kind of on you. You know what? He fell in
love with Chad Pennick and they became friendly and he got swayed into the Jets. Well, I mean, I understand it. I get it. But I inherited the giants from my dad, right? So to Dave, so to a lot of fans and Jets fans too, but you have your only yourself to play. I know. Well, at least I got to make my own choice. And now I got to just now I got to live with it. It was it was like milk. It was a bad choice. Terrible choice. Yeah. You know, this is a fun show, man. Thank you. That's very, very, very fun. Listen to fun to be a part of it. You're always welcome on the show. Well, I listen a lot. Oh, that's because you're super dad. You're going to be breakfast, taking kids to school. I mean, doing it all. I really do do it all. All right. Come on, Nancy. Step it up. Give it to them twice a year. What do we need an anniversary? How about Valentine's Day? Sprickling Valentine's Day. I really do do it all. Well, I need to go to MSG because we got the big. I'm really excited. Everybody's going to be there. Islanders, Nick's Rangers. I'm going to get to see everybody. It's going to be fun. You're stealing our producer today. We've got meetings.
We've got pictures. We've got video. We got to do. You're at this event. Like you're like you walk in there like, he's a rock star. I'm like, I used to, are you serious? A event that's got Mike brain and Kenny Albert and Brendan Burke. They're going to go on. Like, I believe that there's a murmur over in the, like, how many of those guys hosted an afternoon drive show? Not even right. Zero and they're in the voice of a bad angel. I can think, stop yourself. Don't tell me yourself short. It's me and Michael and I think the voice of the Jaguars has a show. I think that's it. Listen, if Nancy won't do it, I'll do it. Oh, you know what? By Don. Love you. All right. We'll see. You see that's the best. He's awesome. And encompassed well within that was the big blue report brought to you by King Swine. King Swine best slider in all football. I love Don LaGrecca. I love him. I'm not afraid to say it either. I love Don LaGrecca. I'd scream it from mountaintop. You know what though? It's, I know we have to go. So I've been thinking about this a lot. It's like this jet season, what's the success,
what's a failure? What do you want? Obviously, you want to be optimistic and all those things. And I've actually like boiled it down to the reason why I think I'm having such a hard time with this is like I mentioned to you yesterday. I don't think that Aaron Glenn is going to prove that he's a good head coach. And I also recognize that we are the jets. I think for you last year going into the coach search, I think there are still people including John Harboh that think it's a big deal to be the head coach of the giants. Yes. I don't think people around the NFL feel the same way about the jets. Well, let me say that I'm not trying to be obnoxious to jerk. There's times I am. I'm not now. Do you think being the jets head coach is a big deal as far as being a head coach in the NFL is concerned? No, I don't, but I also recognize as only 32 jobs. Sure. So to get one, which ends up being why we get who we get, I think. It's like, okay, are there other teams that I'd like to coach? Yes, but those aren't options. This is the option. So I'll take it, which is why
we have, you know, first time coaches all the time. Correct. Part of my biggest hold up is, and this is this is me being 100% truthful is I think the way to get the John Harboh or the Mike Tomlin that Don mentioned is probably to have the bad season and have the first overall pay. I agree. I was just going to say that actually. I mean, like, if there's a, if a Mike Tomlin, who are the like, who are the? Oh, my god coaches. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. My Tomlin, McDermott, like one of those kind of guys, right? Maybe, you know, I don't know one of the two happens in Minnesota. Okay. You'll see maybe Marcus Freeman, right? There's always the conjecture. He wants to take it. Yeah, but it doesn't even forget the name, just like the, the, the, the clear pressure on coaches. Right. Yeah. Whoever it is, if, if, if the Jets alone is not an attractive piece and it may not be for a lot of guys, if I can give you archmanning, is that an attractive piece? If I can give you Dante more, like something, if I can, if I can back up the Brinkstruck and pay you a ton of money and give you the first overall pay in a quarterback rich draft,
we had a hundred million dollars. legitimate talent on the team. Is that enough to afford the big head coach? And I think we're gonna have like a hundred million dollars in free agents. A ton of money. So yeah, I mean, I don't know. That's, that feels like the only way. Yes. To get what you're looking for to really change this thing around because as much as you want to pretend like, oh, you know, six or seven wins, all of a sudden now you're, you know, you're not the laughing stock and you'll feel good in the culture. That doesn't really like solve your biggest problem. So I was listening to, to the carlanchoe yesterday in the way home and Maggie Gray was on with him. And her take is this. Just be awful. You've been, you've been almost a laughing stock of football for the better part of 15 years in the grand scheme of things. What's one more year? In the, in the micro, it's awful. Every week you lose your terrible. If you went three and 14 and you moved on from a coach that most people don't even think is very good, then you wound up with the pick of the litter in a rich quarterback draft. Now you can make some headway. Yeah. It feels like that's the way that you would actually change the dysfunction and
the culture. Everything. It's not the extra couple wins. Like, I mean, Washington didn't turn into like a destination that where guys wanted to go play until they drafted Jaden Daniels and everyone saw how good he was. Right. I think I told you I've heard real negative things about Washington this year. Yeah, I have to, I think the pushback from people that don't want to go through another year of losing and all those different things is I don't think those people necessarily trust that even if we had that pick, we'd get it right. But at some point you have to, don't you? Well, because they're like, but they'll bring up, well Trevor Lawrence is like, yeah, I would sign up for Trevor Lawrence right now. Trevor Lawrence is good. Right. It's not his fault. They hired Urban Meyer. Trevor Lawrence has been to the postseason. Trevor Lawrence is a good quarterback. What they win last year, 14 games. No. Who Jacksonville? 14. I think 13. 13 games last year, 13 and 4. Yeah, they were good and he was good. And that's when Brian Thomas was terrible. I couldn't catch you. Yeah, that's not that. That's that's a. If you think that Trevor Lawrence is would be a bad quarterback on the Jets, you're crazy. He's a very good. Is he what we thought? Probably not.
Is he good? He's definitely good. Was he handled properly? Then also? No. You gave him a guy that can't even get back into coaching. He's a guy that's the left team. He was a salt and kicker. So my God, Argy, that was very nice of you to get up and give your your chair and your seat in your area to done. Oh nice. Me. That's a no brainer. That's a no brainer. I turned around and down the Grocco stand in there in the suit. Oh, it looks terrific. Did you guys notice it was funny on the TV feed. It was like the headless horseman for quite a while. You could use a shot. So that's that's in in trying to have a no head. Oh my goodness. I was good. It wasn't bad. That was down. That was good. Yes. In trying to do so. I also gave up my my seat where I changed the camera shots. So I needed to kind of scoot up next to Harvey for a second. Got you. Did you guys talk cats or anything? No, I'm not as interested as you. Harvey, would you say I'm now your best friend at the station? No. I mean, we've come a long way. I'll say that. See? There are some times where you take shots like we've no reason, but we've made strides. That's his way,
though. Thanks for listening to the DP H Rowan, Rothen Bird podcast. I'm just trying to have the best possible show. That's what I'm trying to do. When does that start? Catch us live weekday mornings from 6 to 10 a.m. on ESPN, New York, the MSG network and streaming live on YouTube.
