These things must happen for Arizona State to upset Texas A&M. You are a Lockdown College football with Spencer McLaughlin, your daily podcast on all things college football, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Thank you all so much for making this your first listen or your first view every day. It is part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day, the number one sports podcast network out there. Thank you all especially my every dayers for helping make that the case. I'll break down and give my thoughts and prediction for Ohio State's clash with Texas in Austin. What a scene that should be with the Texas faithful showing up. There are two other battles. Besides the one I'm going to talk about in the first segment on today's show in which the big 12 is going up against the SEC.
A look at those matchups as well on today's show which is brought to you by CalShe for a limited time. Download the CalShe app and use code Lockdown to get $10 when you trade $10. Arizona State. According to our friends at Fandals, a 14 and a half point underdog at Texas A&M this week. I'm going to explain what this would mean. But first, the path for Arizona State to pull an upset has to include these three points. This is not me doing is there. This is a three. Do the German three point number one. Cutter Bowley has to be protected. This is a pretty inexperienced Arizona State offensive line. They have not been tested against a group like Texas A&M. They played Morgan State last week. Arizona State looked awesome. They are in my top 25 going into week two. That group is going against a much higher caliber front with a defensive minded coach in
Mike Elko. And entering last week, they had 33 combined starts. So if you add the five that each of them got 38 total starts between them. You're going to be on the road. Don't love that for Arizona State. So that is key number one. That offensive line has to wildly outperform expectations. If I'd venture a guess as to why this is a spread of over two touchdowns, I would guess it is because of what may or may not happen, but what they suspect might happen up front in the trenches. That is key number one. Key number two, Marcel Reed has to turn the ball over at least twice. Notice I did not say Marcel Reed, if I were to frame it from a Texas A&M standpoint, needs to have zero turnovers. No, I think you could get away with one.
I think that's okay. But if you do not turn Marcel Reed over, this Arizona State defense that has some pieces I like and looked mostly good against Morgan State last week, not all the time though. I think you have to create a couple of explosive plays. I am anticipating, even though I love Arizona State and what they did this off season, I think that they are going to have to find a way to give themselves plus field position. I think they are going to have to find a way a couple times. I just have a lot of faith in this Texas A&M defense. Sustaining drives is going to be exceedingly difficult, which brings me to the third way. And I think you need all of these things for Arizona State to go be Texas A&M. You have to have a big play on special teams. It could be a blocked kick. It could even be a ridiculous field goal that is made. It could be a big return.
Anything of the sorts, I think you have to have one of those moments because what that's likely to result in is field position, which I think is going to be crucial for Arizona State in this game. So you got to keep Cutter Bowley upright and create some lanes for the running backs who are physical guys. Texas A&M, arm tackles are not going to work against this Arizona State backfield. You've got to find a way to make that play on special teams and you've got to turn over Marcel Reed at least twice. You do those three things. I believe Arizona State can go to college station and get a big time win for the big 12, which is what I want to talk about next. This would be a game that could radically both this season and going forward shift the perception of the big 12. Last year, Arizona State did not do its league of favor and in fact did it a bit of a disservice from a perception standpoint when they as a potential conference title contender and
they ended up being a good team, not a great one, but they were good. Went on the road and lost to Mississippi State who wound up going five and seven. Now Mississippi State contended in games with Tennessee. They would have beaten Texas. They had a three possession lead in the, I believe in the fourth quarter of that game, look like they had a brand of walker certainly thought so. And then it got yanked away from it. Well, they gave it up and Texas storm back. So was Mississippi State your typical five and 17, not necessarily still the perception of it confirmed a lot of people's preconceived notions that yep, CL far ahead the SEC is of the big 12. And I agree the SEC is ahead of the big 12. If Arizona State wins this game, I believe Texas saying M is a good team. I think they are a playoff caliber team. We'll see how their off new offensive coordinator holds up against this Arizona State defense. I think Brian Ward's a really good defense coordinator.
They certainly have their challenges to go against this Texas saying M offense as well. But if Arizona State no matter what happens, whether they hit on the keys that I laid out earlier or not. They just find some way to win this football game. It would do wonders for the sun devils. It would do wonders for the big 12 conference. And as you try to push for what the big 12 was just short because of the committee's decision that I did not agree with last year of leaving BYU out to make the big 12 a too bid league. This game would go a long, long ways as long as Texas saying M doesn't implode on itself like a dying star. And I don't think they're going to do that either, even if they lose this game. As long as that doesn't happen, this would be a massive win for the big 12. So the line is 14 and a half in favor of Texas saying M the over under 15 and a half. I actually like the under in this spot. And notably my my bets have been the sharpest dare I say in all of the college football
podcast community this year. Really, it's just the game picks. Maybe I should go for over under any way under 15 and a half. I think Texas say NM's defense ends up being the difference in this game. I think they make cutter bowling uncomfortable. And he's got great weapons around him. I love read Harris. I love him. Ariane Miller, Texas saying M biggest key on defense. Stop the yards after catch. That was what Arizona State really thrived on last week. So while deep in my heart, there is indeed a part of me that wants to pick Arizona state. I got to go with the Aggies on this one provided by the game caps. Of course, I'm going text saying M to win the game. I'm going Texas saying M to just slightly cover 28 to 13 just. Just barely. I think they pull away. I think their defense is the reason why leave your thoughts in the comments below. Hit me up on Twitter. I locked on underscore CFB.
However you want to get in touch. I didn't plan this maroon in maroon. It just kind of worked out that way. Both of these teams wear maroon. And I'm glad that it that it worked out this way. Go at it in a game that I'm sure nobody will over react to in the ongoing battle between the big 10 and SEC for conference supremacy in college football. I'm sure no one will make a decisive decision of Ohio state is one of the favorites in the big 10 and Texas is one of the big favorites in the SEC. So therefore, since Ohio state one, that means the big 10s better in the SEC. I'm sure nobody will do that. I'm sure those stakes are not in play in this particular matchup. Are you sure of that? Yeah. I'm not sure of that in any way shape or form. Is it a data point? Sure. Is it all encompassing? Absolutely positively. Not. So what's our with Texas? I love the offseason that they had. Absolutely loved it. Archmaning is back after showing real progress last year in the second half.
He watched this hot take alert. He's going to have to play better than he did against Ohio state last year. I know. I know. It's crazy that a guy who was struggling to complete a drag route is going to have to do a little bit better even at home in what should be probably the best environment in all of college football this weekend, though there are certainly going to be a lot of great ones. The big house should be great. I'll talk about that game tomorrow on the show. But Texas is on Ohio state is the sort of non-conference game that I really look forward to seeing more and more in college football and discussions continued recently amongst the college football playoff to expand the playoff to 24 teams. So let's enjoy this game while we can as it is currently being presented. Because for those who will say, you'll get more non-conference games that are quality. You'll get this more coaches will be willing. Yeah. And guess what? It won't matter.
The outcome of this game, even in a 12 team playoff matters. Tremendously because Ohio state and Texas have two of the most difficult conference schedules in the country. Ohio state has to play Oregon. Ohio state has to play Indiana. Ohio state has to play Iowa. I believe they're on the road for that game. They've got to play Michigan in the rivalry. I mean, it is, at least it looked. We'll see how the Michigan game ends up looking at the end of the year. But they have an incredibly difficult schedule. Texas has an incredibly difficult schedule. So the loser of this game is not out of the playoff picture or even unable to control their own fate. But it is certainly a step back set back. I is the word that I'm looking for there. It's a set back in your push to make the college football playoff. In a 2014 playoff, I'm here to tell you it doesn't matter one single bit. These teams are ranked inside the AP top four Ohio states. One Texas is four and the loser isn't going to drop out of the top 10.
And the loser could go nine and three or eight and four and still make the college football playoff in the 2014 era. I just I cannot strongly enough express how opposed I am to a 2014 college football playoff. It would even more than the 12 team did radically restructure our viewing experiences fans. It would make it worse. I don't really care if you get more games like this if they don't mean anything. Go see Hawks by the way. They beat the Patriots. It was amazing. It was a nice throw Drake, man. That was really good. But that game everybody's watching big game Super Bowl rematch. Oh, look at this. Is the Patriots season over? Are they on the brink? Are they bordering on? No, they're not. Why? Because in the NFL, you can lose seven or eight games and make the playoff. I don't want to get there. I don't even want to get 50% of the way there. I like what we have now. I liked it even more before when you had to have one loss maybe or you had to be undefeated.
And now it's at the point where you can lose two games, maybe three, maybe frankly, either of these teams might have a nine and three resume that I'd support making the playoff. I'm not as a blanket principle against the three loss team getting in there. I don't love it. But it doesn't mean that I would never get behind it. You just got to wait and see. So getting to the actual game itself, Archmaning has to play better than he did a year ago. Frankly, so does Julian Sain. I think because Archmaning struggled so much last year, you forget that Julian Sain at that point was a much different quarterback than he is now. They played ball state in week one, Texas played Texas state. They dominated on both sides of the ball. There's not a whole lot to know. This is going to be a good early season measuring stick for both of these teams. I have more confidence, you know, Ohio state's defense, even though they lost a lot from last year's team schematically, Matt Patricia, a lot more engraving in that system. And with a lot of guys on that side of the ball, then what you have on the other side with Will Must champ and the Texas Longhorn defense. And I certainly expected to be better under Will Must champ because that's what
Steve Sarcushion is telling us by hiring Will Must champ is up. It's going to be better. This is going to be improved. That's what every coach is telling you when he makes a coordinator change. So when I'm wondering about in this game are two things more than anything else. There are 17 things that I'm wondering about this game. How does Texas is offensive line hold up? Because last year, and this is unacceptable for any year for the Texas long horns, one of the problems they had on display in their loss against Florida was that their offensive line wasn't very good. And their offensive line wasn't great against Ohio state last year. And this Ohio state front seven, not as scary as last year. But is this a breakout game for Kenyatta Jackson? Just bow atkinson finally get things rolling along with one and a half or two sacks and constant havoc back there. Let's find out the Texas offensive line has to be able to play better against this caliber of opponent if they're going to go in a national championship. Because that was one of several hurdles that they failed to clear in 2025 when
they were the preseason number one team. So these are two fantastic rosters and Ohio state on the other side. What I am wondering, how much do you get the ball? Jeremiah Smith. When Texas and Ohio state matched up with the college football playoff in 2024, I believe it was the least productive game of the entire playoff for Jeremiah Smith, who literally took over against Oregon and made the play and had a big game against Notre Dame. Texas schematically, New Defense coordinator, they were able to take him away. So let's say Texas does that again and Sark remembers, Hey, this is what we did back then. And you know, we took him out of the game. Does Brandon in a step up? Does Chris Henry Jr. step up? Who's the next option? Who's the next go to guy for Julian saying if they're able to successfully orchestrate the same sort of game plan that limited Jeremiah Smith's production the last time these two teams play. So according to our friends over at Fandall, this is a, this is going to be a tight game.
You could say Texas favored by one and a half. I'm going big 10 here. I like Julian saying more than archmaning. I like Ohio States roster a lot. I love what Texas did this off season. And I know it was tempting. It was, it was very, very tempting. All these hats, of course, that you're seeing here on YouTube provided by the game caps. Look how clean that is, man. Really, really good. If you're a flat bill kind of guy, a lot of great flat bills on there. But it is about Ohio state today. I think Ohio state goes down there, gets a win. Should be an awesome football game, but you know what? I have this much faith in Ohio state 28 17. They beat Texas. I like that map Patricia defense a lot. Buck guys by double digits in Austin and Texas fans are going home unhappy. I'm sure everybody will agree with that. So don't bother leaving comments below or hitting me up on Twitter at locked on underscore CFB.
Don't even bother. I'm sure everybody will see it the same way. That's obviously how the show will end too, right? Wide spread agreement. That's the way it goes. Arkansas, Utah, Missouri, Kansas. How many of those games is the big 12 win? First, this episode brought to you by friends over at Odo running a business shouldn't feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together. One app for accounting, another for inventory, another for sales and somehow none of them talk to each other. That's where Odo comes in. Odo is an all in one business management software that brings every part of your business together in one powerful platform from sales and accounting to inventory and marketing. Everything works in one place. Odo is one platform, not two, not three, not four, like the heath will stop there going to win. They ended up with two. No, Odo's one platform to manage, grow and scale your business. The best organizations know success is not just about talent. Ask Texas last year. It's about having everyone working toward the same goal and working cohesively like an offensive line needs to. It's true in sports, just like it is in business.
Great organizations win because they know operations matter like special teams operations. When you see a clean operation on special teams, that's like the Odo of college football right there. Great organizations win because operations matter. That's why you should get Odo. Odo is one platform to manage, grow and scale your business. All right, final segment of today's show and a couple more opportunities for the big 10 or the big 12 rather the big 12 against the SEC.
So a great week for the big 12 would be winning two of these games. That would be a really good outcome. Texas A&M hosting Arizona State. Missouri matching up with Kansas in arrival, re renewed that I am very happy is back. It should always be back. That should be each of those teams, power for a non conference game every year. Unless we were to go to my scheduling model one day and even then I might still just keep that game there, no matter what. Now inexplicably in the eyes of AP voters, Missouri is ranked inside the top 25. I do not subscribe to that particular vision of Missouri at this point in time. Do I see the potential? Sure. Could Austin Simmons be really good? Yeah. Are we going to find out in a major way this week? I don't know. Because Kansas is a program that for a hot minute there once upon a time, some people me and Drake told locked on big 12 as well.
There was a season just a couple of years ago in which we picked Kansas to go to the big 12 championship game. It looked like they were heading there better in quarterback, positive trend, great offensive staff. And since then it's been a lot of middle of the road. This win would mean far more to the Kansas J. Hawks and the big 12 than it would to the Missouri Tigers and the SEC. Certainly from a conference standpoint, Kansas beating Missouri might put Kansas to the top 25. Not that that's automatically how the AP poll works. Of course, because the AP poll has a tendency to get really latched on to its preseason notions of teams. And I think it's good to have a preseason poll. I do. I make one every year. You can see it at locked on underscore CFB on Twitter. I updated every week. I do not latch on to my preseason perceptions the way that some AP voters do. So coming into this year, they think Missouri is a preseason top 25 team.
Okay. All right then. To each their own, I don't see it that way. That program beating Kansas, according to Fandall, their favorite by five and a half points. That wouldn't mean very much if anything to the SEC. But any win, the big 12 gets over the SEC is a notable win for the league, especially this one because this is not a game that Kansas should win. I'll be frank with you. I have not kept high tabs on Kansas this off season because they haven't made that much noise for someone like me on a show like this. But you know what? Lance Leipold is still there. He's one as a far bigger underdog than this before. What I'm watching for more than anything. What do we get from Austin Simmons? Missouri schedule is pretty darn tough this year. And we'll get a good idea of decent. We'll get a decent idea because I don't have that much faith in the Kansas defense. They did not play their best football in week one against an inferior opponent.
I'm wondering what we see from Austin Simmons in this game. If he is going to show up, if he's going to ball out and be the guy that won Ole Miss is starting quarterback job for Lane Kiffin last year on a team that was in the national semi-final, that's one thing. But on the other hand, did he wind up at Missouri because that was the best option available? Or because it was the only option available or because well, he just wanted to stay in the SEC? I don't know. I don't know. We're going to find out. So, fascinating to see how that one plays out. Elsewhere in the big 12 SEC matchups this week. Utah is hosting Arkansas. I am considering making this one of my bets of the week. That's what we're going to call it until further notice. But according to Fandall, Utah is favored by 12 and a half. A lot of schools that have two quarterbacks are one that's waiting to take over for the other. It can generate a sense of anxiety amongst fans, maybe even amongst coaches as well, that
I should be playing this. Just play the young guy. Get the young guy. Oh, man, he's struggling. We already know what this guy can do. Well, we know what Devon Dan Peeer can do. He won 11 football games last year as Utah is starting quarterback. Dude is darn good. The guy behind him, if you haven't seen, is Bird Ficklin, who might be the best athlete on the field when he gets on there, which he does. That's the fun part. So some schools will take a guy that is clearly going to be a starting quarterback one day, like Bird Ficklin. And they'll say, we're going to put you out there in these formations because we really believe in you. When in the back of their minds, they know, yeah, we're just doing this to get you on the field so that you don't leave in the portal in case the veteran comes back. I don't think that's what Utah is doing. It might be a secondary thought. I don't think it's a primary thought because Bird Ficklin is a freaky left handed athlete, the likes of which when you picture a left handed quarterback, if you haven't seen Bird Ficklin before, please don't envision Michael Penix.
Please don't envision Tuha. This guy couldn't be more different than the two of them. He is a freaky, lanky athlete who throws the ball at roughly 800 miles per hour. And when he gets into the game to either carry the ball or be a part of a trick play, it's not a gimmick. It's just good strategy. So this is the game that I agree with Utah being the favorite in that game. Makes all the sense in the world. My question is by how many points is Utah going to win this game? I have a lot of confidence in the UTS. I think Arkansas is finishing DFL in the SEC this year. I think Utah is a solid team. We'll see how things continue to progress as the season goes along. I don't think their schedule is a cakewalk this year. But I think this is a game. Remember when Florida came to Rice Eccles a couple of years ago?
Ecc. Utah had been down to Florida the year before and lost, cameraizing through a pick of the goal line. Then they came back and the SEC was puffing their chest. They were feeling good. That game was over from the first play. Literally the first play was a 70 yard touchdown. I don't know if that's going to happen here, the 70 yard touchdown thing. But I feel pretty good about Utah in the spot. 31-13. I think they knock off Arkansas, cover the 12 and a half. Yeah, more games to talk about. And bets of the week. More of those to consider as well. That'll be on tomorrow's show. Appreciate everyone listening. I will see you next time. And until then, hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day.
