As we welcome back to the show John Shannon for Legacy Heading and Killing. Whether it's Heading or Killing you need to get up with no payments and no interest for a year. That's how you build a legacy legacy Heading going. Hello John Shannon. How you doing? I'm great. Bob you. Not bad game one of life without Leon at least for the rest of the regular season. What do you think last night? I thought everybody pulled it in the same direction with that saying to see how. Guys took advantage of situations. I love the move of a Savoy to that line. I thought both Coleson did what he was supposed to do. I thought Henry did what he was supposed to do when you can get five goals from five different goals scores.
When you need five goals gosh it really looks good doesn't it? John we talked about the fact that the orders of you know they've got the two the perception that they've got the two superstars. So the top five players in the league in Conor Mathew and Leon dry. So I don't think anybody would debate that. Do they have a third superstar? Is Evan Bouschard who has 68 points in 53 games since November the 9th and is plus 31 since then. And amongst the top say 10 defense of the league the only one that plays more time on the BK is Miro Heishkenen. Are we heading down the path where Bouschard who. We'll also mention the second all time in points per game in the playoffs by the guy named Bobby. And we're not talking stopper and we're not talking about we're talking Bobby or. Is do you think you're starting to get a little bit more recognition with how well he's played for over four months. I do I also think that you know the clamor.
In and around Evan about being on the Olympic team or not being on the Olympic team created a lot more awareness of him. And for him people start to pay more attention because Evan Bouschard Bob as you know is a really polarizing figure. Either he's the greatest offensive defense of our time or he's a tremendously bad defensive liability. Well the reality might be that his offensive skill is tremendous and we have overexaggerated his defensive liabilities. Because as you know somebody who carries and he has the puck as much as he does is bound to make some mistakes. And I think people are starting to to understand that I also think that Evan Bouschard is. Starting to play a much more mature gain through all of this maybe a lesson learned because he didn't get picked to the Olympic team. So you may be on to something and I and it's not necessarily in the city of Edmonton.
I think it might be around the NHL all there's detractors in the city of Edmonton as well. Make no mistake. There's no I know I'm talking about I'm talking about people people that actually think that. Gosh he is maybe he really is this good. That's what I'm saying is I'm dealing in the positive outside of Edmonton. This Friday the time traveling comedy movie of the year arrives Mike and Nick and Nick and Alice only on Hulu. The film stars Vince Vaughn James Marsden and Ace of Gonzalez in a wild action comedy about one disastrous night that spirals out of control. And here's the twist. There are two Vince Vaughn's don't miss Mike and Nick and Nick and Alice written and directed by Ben David Grubinsky streaming this Friday only on Hulu rated R two teams one cup. The prime time stage is set for the TGL presented by so five finals Los Angeles golf club versus Tiger's Jupiter links. Keep up it's playoffs tune in Monday March 23rd 9 p.m. Eastern on ESPN 2 and Tuesday March 24th 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN and on the ESPN app.
Right absolutely Leon dry settle we ran the stand Bowman clip of course we courtesy TSN because they grabbed him this morning and basically stand was you know optimistic that Leon could return you know potentially for a startle of playoffs. It does allow the oilers you know I think Edmonton needed to fine tune their game anyways and play a more direct hard game simple as well does not having dry set alamos force the team to do that in order to be competitive. Is it this deja vu of last year at this time Bob 100% when you consider the the injuries that Connor had the time away from the game the injuries that Leon had time away from the game and it gave some of the other key components of the of the team to contribute and they went to
the playoffs in great form. You know that was a simple five game series against Los Angeles and a lot of it was because a ton of other players were empowered because of what happened in March last year I was around 14 or 15 games I believe without both of them right. Well yeah there was one of the one of the yeah there's about four games where they didn't have either but they never had both in any of the final 14 games. Right so in many ways this may parallel that and for that reason in a you know in a in a really really hard injury to accept I think it's a cup half full mentality that you have to take. In this scenario and we'll see what happens the challenge now Bob is yeah we saw it for one night can we see it for two nights can we see it for three nights memory serves me this team hasn't won three consecutive games all season correct I think they did it once once this year that's it once okay but that's fair they've been consistently inconsistent yeah yeah so maybe perhaps this is a chance for those guys funny I in all the discussions
pre-game last night the guy that I and I wasn't asked so I didn't give my opinion but the the guy that I thought would be that difference maker and get the opportunity was the guy that scored the first goal of the game Ryan Newgen Hopkins because Ryan Newgen Hopkins has always always seemed to be able to come up big when he's been asked to come up big because of his versatility and I don't expect anything different from Ryan Newgen Hopkins the rest of the way well he scored some huge goals I mean that's think back to game four in the battle of Alberta against the Calgary flames and the Oilers had the lead and then Rasmus Anderson floated at 175 foot shot past Mike Smith from nowhere and suddenly the game was tied but it was Newgen Hopkins who scored in the final couple minutes of that game to give Edmonton the victory you know four three and and then the Oilers went down to Calgary and ended up ultimately winning the series John you your base I know you do a lot of work in Toronto but you're also on in Vancouver and Winnipeg and I'm actually going to talk to you
about all three markets and get your sense of things as there any Jill Insider where do you think they're out in Toronto we're here in reports like there's is this fate complete that there's going to be a management change at the end of the season what do you think I don't think it's a beta complaint that there's a manager change I do think that there will be change within the least management team whether Brad is a casualty of that or Brad is the instigator of that I think might be the question hmm and it all becomes in my opinion the relationship that he has with Keith Belly which I I firmly believe as a positive one the question becomes is okay Brad you know we and by the way they let Brad get they let bad go through the trade deadline yeah okay Brad we have confidence in you we believe in you
but you need to make tangible change within the administration of this hockey club in order for things to be better and give you a chance to to manage it because a lot of the people that are in the office Brad inherited from Kyle Dubas and and Brandon Shanahan so from that perspective will but I I don't think that that decision has been made yet I'm not even sure the discussion has been had yet but that to me is where the the question will become whether Brad is a casualty or Brad is an instigator and nobody in Toronto would be upset if the Leafs lost 80% of their games the rest of the year right based upon the unique situation with the protected first round pick yeah I think that people would be cheering if they keep losing by a single goal and and work their way to the bottom five so that they can protect that pick in a very very good draft year
correct all right Winnipeg do they got any chance to make it here is there any way they can close the gap or is it too little too late well you know they they they have to go something unreasonably crazy like 14 and 2 so the answer is I think it's almost impossible everybody talked about at the end they just finished an eight game home stand they went five two and one and didn't make a dent they're now going on the road for three games Boston Pittsburgh and the Rangers you know they it's not inconceivable they could lose all three or they could win all three Bob and I think that if they win all three the people are going to think that you know they're still a pulse and if they lose all three then the deal is done yeah Vancouver where do you think the confidence I mean I know the fans the fans wanted to rebuild I'm not convinced the owner did
uh you know you've you've known Jim Rutherford a long time Patrick Elvins there is a GM Jim is the senior guy with that organization I think they're going to have a challenge signing you a phase in the offseason they're going to they might have to trade for a couple contracts where do you think what's going on there well I think I think now that by the way both Toronto and Vancouver should have treated more at the deadline they should have got rid of more players at the deadline even to get fifth even to get fifth six and seventh round picks even to just to get more new bodies in there uh Vancouver in the end it may be too early but I think Vancouver is happy with the return on the huge trade I don't think there's anybody yearning for Queen Hughes in Vancouver these days it's funny how things have turned so quickly so from that perspective I think there's a belief that uh yes the rebuild
is on its way and they do have some young talent to work with I think the question will become Bob is who who is going to be doing it I think Jim expects to be doing it I think his relationship with ownership there is excellent so at this point then it's it's going to be the Jim and his group of people that are going to be rebuilding the organization and they're going to get it you know in theory I don't think they can we worse than third in the draft right so they're going to get a they're going to get a good player whether they can get a good player they can play next year and contribute is a question or still but you know they're you know it's it's down it's going to be down to the studs by by the draft Bob it'll be down to the studs and and then connect fans are going to have to be patient and it's a plastic case Bob and a warning to connect fans be careful what you wish for you know look at look how long it has taken Chicago look how long it took San Jose
look how long it took and this is not like the NFL where you get an elite quarterback and you can turn it around quickly this is a national hockey league where a good player plays 19 minutes and so that's going to be a real challenge in the short term for connox and the connox fan base all right John one final look for you a Doug Armstrong stepping down as GM a team candidate yeah I have a scenario for you what would you think about Kyle Dubas as a GM and they had Kelly McCrimmon to their management team uh it wouldn't surprise me of Kyle uh the question is you know hockey candidate is very loyal to the people who have been part of the program so in and around Doug Armstrong the last time where Jim Nill Julian Breeswa Don sweetie Kyle Dubas Ryan gets left I would suspect that the new manager would come from one of those names and then a Bob I do think
we should add if you're going to if you're going to throw out an idea I do think it would not surprise me that if Sydney Crosby has retired by the time there you know general manager is are you but are you expecting are you expecting Sydney Crosby to retire next season don't they have to name the guy in the next year well it depends if you if you say we're going to have the same group do both the world cup and yeah yes yes but you know to me you know Wayne so Wayne played in 98 sat on the bench without the shoot out as we all remember and Wayne retired and yeah Wayne retired in April of 99 which was a year and a half later and then was named not far after that um that was Bob Nicholson's decision at that point it would not surprise me
that if Sydney retires in two years now that he gets the opportunity to be part of the management team John great stuff tell people about 100 percent hockey 100 percent hockey three times a week on your favorite podcast platform is not much different than where you get oilers now this week we've had some really good guests including a little behind the scenes of what the general managers mean is it like if you're ever fascinated how they're run we spent an hour yesterday with Mike Murphy it's up now and he gives you a real good feeling about what the managers do how they do it and and how passionate they are for the job so it's a it's an interesting discussion with Mike Murphy great stuff thanks John there you go that is John Shen and back with the stakeholders history to crossover Brennan has got now with the home depot received 12 months special financing and free basic installation on carpet projects with
