Good morning. My name is Jeff Rickett hanging out in Sheridan, Wyoming. I'm sweating this morning because nothing was working again. Well, my Adobe audition wasn't working anyway. And I record the show with. I got it to work literally like a minute ago.

1:03So I was sweating, waiting for it to load. Oh, it's always something. Last night I turned my computer on. What was it? It was something last night too. It's always something. These max, I'm a PC guy. We do the show on a Mac. They drive me nuts. It's just a little bit different. How's your week? Mine wasn't too bad. Very busy, like normal. But we're here. We made it. 2:08What a crazy week in news. A tough news story about Mitchell Wilcox in Buffalo, Wyoming. I found out about that last Sunday morning. My brother called me and told me he had heard about it. And I was like, what? The problem is, is I know one of the victims or one of the people that was attacked, one of the ladies. And then I also know Mitchell and his family. Growing up in Buffalo, I'm from Buffalo. My brother, my mom. I have a million aunts and uncles and cousins that still live in Buffalo. Well, there's only 4,000 people living Buffalo, but I'm probably related to half of them. But yeah, just awful news.

3:08I knew Mitchell when he was young. I signed the last couple of years over here in Sheridan. He was working. When I was working for a cell phone company, he worked a couple doors down. One would see him and would talk to him. But yeah, just sad news all the way around. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people involved in that. Just awful. The Sheridan Bronx got a scare last night. Yeah, their winning streak almost came to a screeching halt. It was rainy, windy, awful over here in Sheridan last night. The game was delayed for probably an hour. They were hosting Kelly Walsh. They were losing in the fourth quarter. They scored with like two minutes to go to end up beating Kelly Walsh.

4:09What was it? 24-21. Yeah, scored a game winning touchdown with just over two minutes left to extend their streak to 59 games in a row now. Cheyenne South, I think they're losing streak. Is it 59 or 60 games now? They have not scored a point this year. They lost to East 69 to nothing. Awful. Netrona County who I think Sheridan might play next week defeated Central 28 to 13. That's going to be the game. Then East over South. Larmy Upsets, Campbell County, 15 to 13. Here comes chunk to disrupt everything even more. Please don't knock me off the air. I can't take it right now. Oh. Jackson one star of alley blanks, lander 56 to nothing.

5:13Cody blank river 1038 to nothing. Buffalo lost a power 14 to six. I watched a little bit out of Buffalo game. Oh, their offense is not good. Douglas beat Green River in overtime 21 to 20. Bighorn crushed Glenrock 55 to nothing. Wheatland over Moorecroft. Let's see. Burns upset to ring to 47 to 33. Tongue River lost a new castle 12 to 7. Cokeville beat Thermop 14 13 in a couple ranked teams matchup. But yeah, the Sheridan Bronx. I've just held by tongue the last couple of weeks listening to their games. If you want a drinking game, just watch their halftime show and every time the host says.

6:19What is it here? I haven't written down as well. Take a drink. You'll be dead by the end of halftime or passed out one of the two. But yes, the Sheridan Bronx survive the warming wanderer. Simon is at Central Michigan today for the Wyoming Central Michigan game in Mount Vernon. Michigan. Is that right? Don't quote me on that. But Simon is there. He's going to be joining us next hour. The pokes. Central Michigan is awful and they're favored by like two and a half points. Not good. After last week that we barely squeaked by Northern Colorado, I don't blame them for having

7:20Wyoming not favored in that game. It's just pathetic. It was so upsetting watching that game last week. Well first I was sitting here listening to it because it was only online or it was on the Mountain West network. In the second half my son snaps me and says I went on Amazon and I got the free preview of the Mountain West network. I was like, I don't know if I want to watch this game. He goes, well, you can watch it for free. So I was like, all right. So I dialed it up on Amazon Prime. I got the fake God for the fake lightning delay. That the Wyoming Cowboys were able to regroup and win the game and score late to make the score look not as pathetic as it actually was. So hopefully that got the fire going and we can keep the momentum going this week.

8:26But the folks never great on the road. But I went on line last night to cancel my Mountain West subscription because I had seven day free trial and I was like, oh, man, I got to remember that. It was going to deem me for like 10 bucks. So I go on there. I check my Amazon Prime subscriptions and I have an Apple Plus subscription and I have Apple TV. I'm like, why do I have two Apple subscriptions at 1299 a month. And Apple also sent me an email last week and said their subscriptions going up to 1499 a month. When I signed up for Apple TV a couple of years ago, it was four bucks. It was 399. Now it's 1499. I can't even tell you the last time I went and watched something on Apple TV. So I canceled them. We'll see. I love canceling subscriptions and I just wait until my wife or one of my kids complain.

9:28If they don't see a cable TVs, it's all ridiculous. I have like eight streaming services or something. It's awful. Hunch hunk. It's insanity. Just like today's show, we are jam packed today. Eight guests again today. Unreal. Insane. I overbooked myself, overworked myself every single week just because I love to torture myself, I think. We have the husband and wife duo of the Shelley Jones band. They have 15 number one songs on the Australian music charts. They're going to be coming on here in a few minutes. They got a brand new single out right now.

10:30Then Stymies calling in from Central Michigan. Tay and the neighborly, they're a band from Wisconsin. 14:42of Lester and Shelley. They're based on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia. These polished all round entertainers have been performing professionally together for over 15 years in their current format. They hold chart records with 15 number one hits on Australian country music charts. Their latest single pocket full of words is out now. We're excited they're hanging out in the Zoom room. Today Lester and Shelley, there they are. Thanks so much for coming on guys. Hi Jeff. Hi Jeff. How are you? Oh just excellent. Well first I got to ask Lester, how are you doing? I heard that you broke your back. Yeah. And she the word gets ran. It's gone right around the world. I'm getting there. I can walk. Hey, he's smiling. That's a good thing. He hasn't been doing a lot of that for late. Yeah, he's smiling and he said I can walk.

15:43What happened? I mean, Shelley take the base to you. What's going on here? I do all the heavy lifting. And he wouldn't believe it at the end of the heavy lifting with music here. I sneezed. And he's one of his vertebra just exploded. He ended up in an ambulance in hospital for a couple of weeks. Now I couldn't walk for about six weeks. Then graduates, that was about three months now. I don't know. Just getting a bit better. Holy cow. It broke bad timing. Yes, very bad timing. Well, and that's how life works. It's, you know, you move the wrong way. You sneeze. It's never when you think it's going to happen. So when this happens, does it, your back just lock up? Do you fall? What happened?

16:43No, I fell down. I couldn't get back up. We live in a two story house. I couldn't get upstairs, downstairs or anything. It's just happened out of the blue. It's the airplane. You couldn't move at all. We had calluses on his knees for crawling around downstairs. The good thing was he couldn't come upstairs. So, you know, I had some space. It was great. Yes. The timing was good because we were very busy. And we've been doing a lot of traveling. So if you wanted something to happen and they had to happen, it was a big time. It was a big time. You know, down time. Well, that's good. Yeah, at least you weren't on the road or... Oh, man. Oh, yeah. Yeah, it could have happened. Well, we worked that day, more coming home. And so the timing couldn't... We lost a bit of work, but I did a lot of songwriting.

17:47Yeah, that's the good thing out of this. So a lot of songwriting. I had the six-hectom. I had to lay on the floor for, um, it was about six weeks. And I watched every YouTube about country music, most of us American. And I know all the history of everyone now. He's still the one. He's still the one. And he's got a lot of song ideas from everything. So that's... Yeah, just ideas, though. He'll give it all handed all over to me and say, what are you going to do with this? He's just making more work for Shelley. That's... Well, he makes that. She does all the work. Well, it's been horrendous the last couple of six weeks. Who's on the one that's had to care for him? And apparently you've got to feed them. So I've had to go down the stairs and up the stairs and down the stairs 50,000 times a day. It's been horrendous.

18:47Karen for it. And he's a man. He's a sick. He's been winging about the pain. If I yell out, she won't answer. So I ring her phone. He rings me. You got a collar when she's upstairs. Hey, get back down here. I need some help. I need food. He needs food. I need some food. Unreal. So you're on the man, though. So you're whacking? Yes. We've got back into the music, actually. So it's been on white duties, you know, but it's the word got it back into playing guitar and doing a bit of singing, but it's only a short period of a time at the moment. But it's all good. It's all good. We're surviving. They're surviving. Oh, I am. Wow. Do you have a brace or anything like that? I don't. You've been used to it for that.

19:49I tried to brace. I found it was easier without it. Yes. We started off walking probably 100 meters a day, and that was enough. And now I'm walking a couple of, we have kilometers. So it'll be a couple of miles a day on walk. And with the music side of it, when we turn up now, I just stand back and let every miles. And then we'll go to the heavy lifting. See that. I've got a good side, but I've got a lot stronger. I've been doing a lot. Well, the heavy lifting. There's always a funny story, the things after. Yeah. Yeah, not dirty. Yeah, it wasn't dirty. No. No, not at all. Well, I mean, both of you guys started early. I see all this, you know, you've been together forever. Well, how did it start? How did you guys meet?

20:50We met through the music, because like originally we both had real jobs, and we were, we were not, music was part time. So we were both working in backing bands a lot, and you know, it came along where we both worked in the same backing band for a long time. And we just sort of, because we started singing together and things like that, we just realized that we sort of had a good thing happening. We really geled with the music, and that's sort of where it started. So Leicester came up with the idea we had. It's hard work backing people. You know, all these songs, why not we sort of do our own thing? And that's how it started. And we're both shy little things. So, you know, it was a bit hard at first for us to break out and be the front person. But yeah, it's been great ever since we have. We've been having a ball. So it's a lot easier working for yourself than working for someone else.

21:52Yeah. And we can win, because we're husband and wife, of course, obviously we win each other all the time. So we used to that, and we could just be honest with each other. And yeah, that's what we do, don't we? When you said 15 years, it's been, yeah, it's actually longer than that. But yeah, no. But you know, you'd know how old we are, man. Yeah, we don't want to talk about age. Yeah, no, we don't want to get old. I don't want to get old. You've already told what I'm spoken about in the back. You think they'll know that? Well, it's crazy. Your guys' story, though, because shelly, I mean, when Steven told me you had a stroke at age 14, I'm like, what? And then I watched some clips. You see you guys playing. You weren't going to let this bring you down at all. Shelly, she can't even use your right hand. I've got a slide on our movement in my right hand, but it's not enough to obviously play

22:58an instrument or really do anything. They're like picking things up, things like that. But I don't have the fine motor skills anymore in my right hand that I want to do. So I think as it happens when I was so young and I love music so much, I just started playing bass as a kind of a stand-by. And again, in a backing band, it was the bass player didn't turn up. And I didn't even really play bass at the time. So I was more of a guitar player and violin player. And I just sort of just mucked around doing it one handed and everyone in the band said, that sounds good. We might sack the bass player and get you to be the bass player and I haven't looked back since. So you just got to do what you do with what you got. And that's just how it's going. It's just second nature now. It's funny when we play live and we always joke about this.

23:59You might do this performance and it's so good and you think, gee, I sang that so great and we did all this great. And yet somebody will come up and say, I just noticed you're playing bass one handed. I think, you notice the rest of the performance. It was so good to say, I've got to spend the whole time talking about how it came about and things like that. But I guess there's a positive thing too. I've inspired a lot of people to them that have gone through something similar to get back into music again. So as I say, it is what it is. That's incredible because you play the bass with just your left hand. And I mean, you're pretty much like slapping it hard enough on the frets to play it or how does it work? Yeah, it's like a hammering technique. If there's any guitar players out there, they'll know you can hammer against the fretboard and it makes a noise.

25:00And she's like a type of string with the one hand. And she's like, well, the frets are open string and the string sounds like, look, I'm up. They think she's actually playing and then she'll pick my guitar up. You do some guitar, riffs on the guitar as well and they just sort of can't believe it. It's amazing what you can do when you have to. Yeah, exactly. Especially when you're young and you want to keep it going. And yeah, I'll figure a work around out of this one way or the other. I mean, as much music as you guys pump out, I mean, Lester, you produce like the first album, do we have a home studio or are you still doing that? Are we going somewhere else? What's going on? Well, we have a basic, we have a basic studio at home. We record all our vocals, bass and guitar, then we go the central coast, which is it's

26:10six hour drive. We go down there and we meet up in the studio and he organizes some extra players. Then produce sometimes within us. It works well. Other times we might just produce something solely at home. It depends what we do because we do such a big variety of songs. And we've sort of got into doing it recording for other people. So we're starting to get into that a little bit as well, which is a lot of fun. Yeah, well, we'll talk about that. Go check them out. Charlie Jones band there at Shelley Jones band.com.au. Whose idea was it to cover this song?

27:14The person next to me. No, no, with Lester. I didn't want to do it. I liked the song. Lester absolutely hates the sound of his own voice. And I said, I'm not putting out an album. I let you sing on it. And it was a rule struggle to get him to sing on this on the album. And it was funny when we sing live, we share it pretty much 50, 50. But it just absolutely can't stand his own voice. And because he broke his back seat, I thought, I'm just going to release his single. So I did. And then we've got to sort of, we've got to do it. We had to do it. We could stop. We're working. It's just got to the stage. We have to really keep ourselves in front of people, which is release some song as pocket full of words of the same thing. We've gone back through some of our albums we've done.

28:16And we thought, well, we've finished, we're going to sing a close song. We finished today. A comedy song. But that will really save in a couple of weeks, or leading up the Christmas. But we don't have to pull our finger out. A string in time. And I get some more recordings done for next year. So we can do another album or two. One thing is we have got lots in the, in the, lots of the songs that we've been working on. So it's, it's getting a lot closer to some new music coming out. And hopefully that's it. That's if Lester doesn't break these back again. Stop sneezing, Lester. Yeah, stop sneezing. I was going to ask you that because Christmas is coming up. You guys have done Christmas music in the past. So we have a new Christmas song coming for this year.

29:17That's me. I can't help myself on the idiot out of the two of us. And I come up with all these silly Christmas songs. And I'm, you know, I had a little time too because these breakies back. I can't do much. So I just sort of put on. I'm going to put out another Christmas song. So there's another one coming. Well, we've done a very Australia, everything at home. So nothing's done through the external. We do. Do you do that? We do. Don't call these probably. It's a fun song. It's a fun song. And we try to do one or two a year. Yeah. It's the demo. You have some. You. And I should also send you a copy. It's very Australian though. Have you heard of little room? Yeah. And they know what the cut out of the bag is. It's a. It's a. It's a. It's Australia's brand. Can you not suppose in reverse? If you ride in the middle of Australia.

30:18It's a big rock. And I call it a. It's rock. And everything else around is flat. It's a. It's a better. It's a better three day joy for us. They get there. But it's a real tourist attraction. I'm going to just give you a heads up. I'm going to just give you a head up. And I'm going to just give you a head up. And that's what that features in our Christmas. Christmas song. Santa broke down. Santa broke down to rock. Yeah. Well, we'll send you. After we finished tonight. We'll send you. The finished product. Nice. Yeah. They'll, they'll. They'll give me a sneak peak. Yeah. Yeah. You're doing the words. Or you're doing the lyrics pretty much. No, no, we, we're pretty much. We both do. The songs usually we write separately, because spring. I hear you too much when we write together.

31:19But then. But we've got better at it. Well, one will come up with the idea and like one verse or something like that, and then we'll come together and finish the songs off together. Or a lot of times one will nearly write. If it's a silly song, it's usually me that writes it because. Because I'm he's got no sense in him. I let's place it. No. No, it's just because I'm probably. I don't know. I've always been like that. I'm, you know, a bit quirky. But I'm all pop it for words that the song that we've bought out. That's probably more of a lesser song. He cares. He's more technical in these writing. He's got more brains. I'll keep a recording of that. Well, exactly. I'm just being nice. I'm just being nice to him because he's broke. But. Now she's going to compliment. She's feeling sorry for him. He's doing better now. Well, I mean, you guys have won a bunch of awards.

32:20Even once and over here at the International Singer Songwriter's Association a few years back. How does it feel to win? Independent awards or any kind of awards right now at this stage of your career? I'd have to say pretty good because we've always had this running joke that we're just a couple of losers because we just. We just went through for so long where we're always nominated for something but never actually get the award. And then. Well, suddenly we just had this run where we. Well, we were winning heap of awards all over the place and you know the very first one that just felt. If anything, it felt like a relief. It felt like, oh, you know, maybe. Maybe we are doing some good putting out some good music and. Yeah, it feels like a reward for what you do. I guess so. Dan, we were happy. It was feeling.

33:23We had found like our studio. You have a look on the wall and people turn up and you got the trophies up on the wall. I know they mean more to other people than what they do to us. And so when you get your first one puts a smile on your face. Then after a while you feel bad because if you don't win. You know, you feel bad because you think I'm going enough to put another show for. Yeah, now I'm running out of room for all these. Yeah, that's why I'm very lucky. Yeah, I'm really appreciated to. I mean, it's all the way from 2008.

34:24They were a finalist. So yeah, they've been at this. Yeah, just a long time. Yeah, just a little while. 36:29They're in the Zoom room all the way in New South Wales. Well, it's hilarious. This recent single, Peas and a Pod. I mean, how fun is this to write this song, guys? That was fun for me because I got less to the sing on it again. He hates hearing his own voice. I said, doing, I want to write a romantic song that's sort of, you know, about us being two peas and a pod. And he said, no. Eventually, I talked him into it. And yeah, he sort of even helped out with some of the lyrics for the bits that he was going to sing. Because he thought, if I'm going to sing this song, I want to make sure you don't put something in there that's, you know, too romantic. So, yeah, it's a man thing. It's a man thing. It's a man thing.

37:29Yeah. We can't be too much. Yeah, we had a lot of fun there. And we have a lot of fun singing it live too because, you know, we try to look at each other as a singer. It just doesn't work because we're not like that. We're just, we like to, you know, we jake more with each other than do the lobby, w thing on stage. So, you know, we're all, it was less as always, you know, broken fun at me. And I'm doing things like that to humans as well. You know, it's hard to do a romantic song when all you want to do is insult one another. It's hard to say. But it works for us. Well, yeah, you just mentioned it, Shelley, because in your bio, it says great musician ship, but a hint of cheeky humor in the live shows. Yeah. So, yeah, so we're jabbing back at four back at and forth with each other or what's happening. Sometimes we can have full on domestics on stage as well. So, you know, we're not. They believe domestic.

38:31So, yeah, this mainly Lester, you know, he just comes out with some of the most. He's a very honest person. So, you know, it comes out with stupid things all the time. And then I have to say something stupid back to make it not sound so stupid. And so, you know, we have a lot of fun when we were on stage. And I think that that shows through people like it. A lot of people sort of can see their own. You know, personality personalities are what we do. And we're just so natural on stage. What you see is what you get. It's what we are. So, you know, it works. It's. It can't. Can't be anything. But. So. Yeah. It works. That's for sure. I mean, you're hit ball and I want to write a song. This is wanting to write the perfect love song for someone special. What inspired you guys to write this one? Well.

39:31This is another example. I said to we were writing for the last album. And we try to do. You know, an even number of songs that each of us have written. So, there's a bit of a variety of songs. And I said to Leicester, look, you know, I'm writing songs all the time. I'm like, you know, I'm. I'm pretty heavy. It was songwriter. But Leicester's sort of focuses more on what needs to be done. There's a man thing. And I said to him, we need another song for the album. Don't come up with one. I'm going to put mine on there. And he panics. Anything. So, you can't. I'm going to put mine on there. I'm going to put mine on there. And he panics. Anything. So, you can't have too many persons in there. But I had one of mine on there as well. And I said, you know, why don't you write an erinetic song? And he came up with this song. And I just sort of thought, where did that come from? You're not romantic like that at all. And it's just turned out to be one of the most pretty songs.

40:33And I was impressed. I'm like, I'm going to come up there and show you all the songs. I do. More than what I do. No, we always write. Even if I put my chin up, I only put the best bits in. Me. Then they pop over to Shelley. And they start congratulating her on a nice romantic song. And she tries to tell them, it was me. But they don't believe you. So I say it was, you know, it was such a good song. It was like somebody handed it to me. So that's what the songs all about. It's really less to showing you's romantic side. The romantic song we do. And he's the most unromantic person. I'm just a mother to you. I mean, it is romantic night out. So you want to go for pizza?

41:35Well, he can write about being romantic. He's just, you know, doesn't show being. I have the fiddle for that. Is it evolved over the years? Your guys is writing style. Oh, definitely. I think it's, um, we were listening to one of the first album that we've done. And we're just going to be able to produce the other day. And we were even thinking of re-releasing one of the songs on there. That we've done done with that. And just re-producing it. Even the way we produce things and write and. It's definitely changed. It's some. Kind of evolved to with the. I'm going to lot plus I think you get to you. Writing style changes to a lot of the audiences that you're playing to. I think they're liking and things like that. And I think because we do. So much live playing with. Got a real feel for what we know.

42:35People are going to like in a live setting. So that's probably how our song writings leading towards. We kind of go to what we think is going to go down. Really well. We play live. Just. Thank you. If we travel to a different state. And they like different. You think it's even a still country music. Like a different style. And. I think what's happened over the years because we moved. We used to have been Sydney. Which is a. Cap also. City of NSW. And. There's a different style of music there. As when we moved away from there our style change. We could go more. More country style. Where it's not accepted as much. Yeah, the more in the bigger cities.

43:35As change has changed. It is as well. It's something that we've deliberately done either. It's just something that's evolved. Like as we've gone along with the songwriting. So it's still very much what we would. Feel personally for writing a song. It's just. It's kind of. I don't know. You just get a. Since. But what you think is going to be good. So. That's that what's happening. That's funny. That's kind of like here too. If you go to the big cities it's more commercial stuff. You come out. Yeah, exactly. You can be more country or you can be more. You can just be more tell a story rather than. You know, playing something that. That people have. I'm a dance too. I'm being followed. 44:35You guys like playing with. Other people. West out of Red Rock. This this is I mean a rock and believe song. And did they come to you with this? How did this happen? It's funny. You know, we do a lot of shows where obviously the other artists are on the on the bill as well. And there was one local show that we were doing and. There's another duo that you called Wattling and Bates that which is. The song that you're referring to. And they are completely different to us. So in every way, but for some reason we just click and we get on so well together. And we go and visit them. They live in a little play scored on a girl, which is I think they've literally got 20 people in the town. And they're real hillbillies. They're in the middle of nowhere. We go visit and we sit on the on the huge deck and we jam and everything. We came up with this idea that we would do this.

45:37We did that. It was a lot of fun. We did that. And we went and we did some duet together. So I wrote a song for them called if you knew what you know. And and we did that one first and it went really well on the chart as well. So as a favor, Jeff decided, I'm going to do a rock abilly song for us. And so that's how it happened. We ended up doing two songs together. And they worked out really well. And we had a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun. And I was like, well, I think it was like, well, we have a lot of fun. So I think it was a lot of fun. Yeah. It was fun. What's happening with music. It brings people together. So, yeah. Well, and you threw them for a complete curveball with this one, but it's a great song. Go ahead and check it out. The new one, pocketful of words. I mean, yeah. What was the defining moment? What inspired this one? You said, luster had more to do with this song. You know, I think I did a great job. What inspired you to do with this song. song was with this? Yeah. So they honestly I can't remember what inspired me. So saying that

46:42happened, I think watching, we're watching the news or something that was happening at the time, one of the politicians came out with that saying pocket full of words and he was referring to it in a political sense and this is that oh that's a good saying, you know I'm going to turn that into a song and the next thing you know he does what he does he goes down it is a little into the studio downstairs we call it the dungeon because it's downstairs in the dark and he came up with this song and I just sort of looked at it and thought yeah what are you trying to say? Yeah so we kind of worked out a little bit and I got it came out great and I think it's a it's perfect time for that song to come out because it's all about empathy and you know having a bit of understanding to be in a bit more open minded about people, their struggles and things like that and put a bit more effort into helping someone rather than criticizing them and I think

47:43it's probably a good time for this song to come out because it's got a good message. Yeah and when I'm believing in the message is still a drop of phone through similands, financial from the 12th or you think they're a bit tighter and now we really start to long because it fits the time and people don't have the money as for you is what they do if you went back 20 or 30 years ago and we weren't going to release it. We got to the stage where I fitted the time so yeah that's it's it's a bit complicated. I get a no I get an idea and I I run with the idea and then we sit down together and have a few arguments over to them

48:47in the table and don't speak to each other for a few hours and then we come back together but it works. Yeah and then a masterpiece. We try to send a message but without putting anyone down. So I think that's hopefully that's what's come across with pocket full of words we're just sort of putting it out there that I mean I have a bit of empathy for what everybody is going through at the moment it's some you know we're all doing a bit tough whether it be um financially emotionally or whatever or someone else you know so you know I think everyone rather than getting too angry about being should probably sort of calm down a little bit and think but you know I understand that everyone's in the same boat yeah. If America's probably the same as Australia we watch you we watch you're news and rents are going up and the cost of fuel you call a gas

1:09:55I think one of your guys is social media says like cake band or something okay yeah that's a that's a tip of the hat to that yeah because I mean you were an artist Andy I mean how to be in music will were you in a band how did you get involved okay well I I want to school at EWO Clare study music and then I moved to Minneapolis but some of my ties kind of in the Fox cities area of Wisconsin so Ashkosh Appleton Green Bay I know a lot of musicians there and they were really kind of into throw my name in the ring when when taking the name really needed new bass player so that's kind of how I struck up I moved from O'Claire to Minneapolis and I joined a band in Green Bay and that makes no sense but that's what I did in your I am but I mean I've been loving to renovate these guys it's really fun yeah because you guys are out of Green Bay or we still is that still home base we are in Green Bay and then he's in the Twin Cities okay and then we've been kind

1:11:00of our main guitarist can't usually hit the road with us his name is Kelvin Casper he's in the he's kind of near us in Green Bay um yeah we've been having a few different guitar players come out on the road with us which has been really cool because they're all great players so yeah well and how is it without a keyboardist um we've had a yeah it's quieter I feel like it's been a change because the keyboard player also played the pedal steal um yeah it's been a change uh vibe wise and musically but it's been obviously a great journey to just kind of find our footing again after the the change up so yeah well I mean probably we probably want a keyboardist or what did you say he because I saw one post you guys had where you went and saw him and said you

Well it's just I mean even the first track because everything's you know TAY I'm like okay we're gonna hear a female voice no you don't even I think it's you Andy right it starts the album. Oh I'm singing no I don't sing. Well who's the other man who's the male voice? That's a beer. That's a beer. Oh my god see exactly it's not I mean I was just like what is going on here?

1:14:10We hear a lot of a lot of comparisons after shows like everyone names their favorite kind of low voice female soul singer yeah we've heard them all but here a lot of that we we hear a lot of compliments and the in the tightness of the rhythm section which too as a bass player that means a lot to me. Yeah Andy Andy won't say it but he's a very good drummer and it's it's super fun to look up with him every show so. We like to make it sound really junky and soulful too so. Well yeah yeah well that's I told somebody I go I think there's an old black lady somewhere who's in tears she swallowed her so I don't know. Yeah it's amazing yeah it's great I love listening the whole album you got to go check it out but yeah I just I was not expecting that at all the duo shows so it's you and Andy that do the duo shows? Yeah we both play acoustic guitars

1:15:13and sang he harmonizes with me and yeah we basically do like a stripped down version of the songs that we do full band. Okay well yeah you're doing some singing Andy I see you back there with the a little bit yeah but it definitely wasn't me that you heard. That's tape on everything that's even more impressive. Because where where are we getting this? I was this part of your solo routine and then the guys of I mean where's the set where's the sound coming from you're from Wisconsin dammit. I feel like I always had the idea that I wanted to try to put out kind of a timeless message and so I'm mainly writer singer and I feel like I bring the bones to these guys and I've I've always tried to ask like people to just kind of throw themselves into it whatever they see themselves playing within it you know and then they write their parts and we all come together

1:16:18with our crazy little brains and whatever you're hearing is what comes out. Yeah and self help I mean we're trying to turn heavy times into joy. What's the most vulnerable song on the record? Oh that's a hard one. I mean they're all vulnerable. I feel like all of them have taken you know so much time to finally formulate a complete thought for me to finally finish a song. I don't know I'll say self help. Yeah that one I kind of wrote just about feeling out of place in general and having nothing to really refer to as far as like you know where's the where's the manual on how to do this life thing and how do I do what I'm supposed to be doing that I'm feeling

1:17:19this crazy burn in my heart's play music the way that I want to and travel the way that I want to you know there's no there's no rules on how to do that correctly and for me that's the song is mainly about just like trusting your gut and following your dreams and I feel like I'm constantly trying to you know figure out how to do life and so that's what that's kind of about. How is it going from festivals to Wyoming to Wisconsin to what what do we like better? We love all of it. We like it all. I kind of like the changes scenery. It's like fun to play a festival stage and then go play a rock club and we'll play a small theater. It's just I don't know it's just the band reverberates up with these different scenarios very well and it keeps it fresh for us so yeah. Yeah. Because how do we get hooked up with the wild theater in

1:18:20Sheridan Wyoming a band from Wisconsin is out touring everywhere. Do you reach out to them? Do they find you? How does it work? I'm not entirely sure what the connection was for this particular one. We work with an amazing lady named Nicole through an agency named Ark Artis and we've been working with her for like four or five years now and so she kind of you know takes a hold of the book inside of things for the most part and that's where she said to go. She says you're head and west. Yeah so this is actually one of my favorites to play in our set and it was also one of my favorites to record on that record. It is kind of about so I wrote this back track. I wrote this up at Holiday Music Motel in a place called Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. And in this motel I wrote a bunch of these songs that we're playing and that we've recorded. And the song is about kind of how you can get stuck in the same kind of gray mindset of oh life is hard and you have an idea of the way that your day is supposed to go. And when it doesn't go that way and there's a moment that becomes pivotal in the direction that you thought you were headed. Yeah it's all about

1:24:55You're in Nashville right? I am in Nashville. I am actually at Aubrey Land. So I hope you all can hear me with all of the noise behind me. But yeah we're hanging out in Nashville for the weekend. I've been in Nashville. In Nashville more than I'm not but I refuse to move here because traffic's awesome. It makes you change your opinion about moving here for sure. But in Nashville right now this weekend celebrating the Josie getting dressed. I've got to finish up getting dressed here a little bit to head on down. I'm going to be doing some interviews, bingling, meet some other artists. We're so super excited. Tomorrow night we head over to the Grand Ole offer. We're at four nominations all around. He's going to throw the first stone and it's just been incredible. Like you said we just won female rising star in Atlanta and we also won another award at a Hollywood for this single. So it's been crazy. It's been crazy. So thankful. Yeah it's been a good month or so for for Kristen Nicole. That's for sure.

1:26:01It's funny she mentioned the traffic. If you go to her social media she's got a post a picture on there of the traffic. She's like I'm only a couple miles away but it's just I'm going to get there on Tuesday. Yeah that's so. Yeah it was so funny because like we pre-schedule all of the social media stuff. So that one was a photo I had actually took two weeks ago when I was heading to the studio to record and it just happened to go off on the day that I was heading to Nashville and I was like oh it worked out. Yeah good timing. Perfectly hit there because she's back in Nashville. Well you looked amazing at the ISIS. What's the wardrobe? What are we going to be wearing tomorrow for the Josies? We're kind of sticking with the outlaw like how girls situation it seems to work with the vibe of our music. It's interesting. Everybody's like you don't sound the way that you look and I don't know if that's good or bad thing but we'll take it. Yeah is that a compliment? I don't know. I've heard it several different times but I've also had you know it's really interesting. The first time that I recorded in Nashville

1:27:06my sound session it was there in COVID and it was Larry Beer was the session leader and we were all on iPads. I had never recorded before we were all on iPads so it was all I had ever known. We went through the first cut and he said oh my goodness you sound like Miranda Lambert which is interesting because it's never been of course I knew her music growing up in East Tennessee like definitely knew her music but was not one that I could study you know I kind of swing more towards their Riva wine ona side so and I have gotten that compliment ever since and I'm so thankful like thank you all so much. Well yeah we'll take it. That's for sure. You mentioned East Tennessee. Yo East Tennessee you say the landed Dolly well we lost Dolly. How heartbreaking was that? You know it was very she did so much for her community. One of the things that made her stand out to me was that she did give back to her community and I think that that is something really important that artists need to take away

1:28:10to turn around and give back to your hometowns in some form or fashion you know get the music scene started wherever you're from if there's not one. I think it's very important because we're you know one generation away from a disappearing and we as artists are not only in we're inclined to hand it to the next generation to help them not to get keep all the things but to help them carry it on long after we're gone and that's part of the artist legacy. Yeah maybe in 50 years when they say East Tennessee they'll say this is where Chris Nicole was from. So it's really interesting I am from a place the county I'm from it's called the cradle of country music it's a unique county Tennessee it's where Chattacans, Roy Aka, Kenny Chesney and the list goes on and on and some say it's in the water and baby cells. 1:30:16won DJ of the year like in 2020 2021 at the ice is so yeah I've been involved with it for many years and and I loved it when I saw the pictures from her at the pre-party I was like that's great having a rocker punk rocker or yeah just blowing everybody away. What's fantastic? Yeah. Some life in the pre-party uh that's for sure. Now is this right you're a music teacher? I am a singer songwriter I also do consultations for young artists coming up that are just trying to figure out what to do for that next step and that's why I love ISIS so much they are so just locked in on helping you know building that gap what we have seen in Nashville is the artist development portion has gone away from the record companies so they are basically now looking for artists that are already established before they even consider the pickup so the music scene has

1:31:17changed their thoughts because the digital age and all of this stuff so I saw all of these association it is so important to have them feel that that because that is a big piece we have lost from major music life. Yeah that's and that's I mean what you're starving artists that's starting out yeah you got to do it all on your own before anybody even. Backly for sure yeah you have to wear all the hats so to speak. You're not the artist you're a promoter you know you're taking care of the legal side of things you're making that's the paper work to register a song today which is I feel like because of all of this movement with um you know digital music it is even more critical to register music now more than ever um so it's really really important and it's important that you don't miss a step in that release process to make sure hey the music's getting out there hey the rules are coming back to you and all of the in between. Yeah it's it's crazy just like you said you got to wear 20 different hats to and it's it's

1:32:20it's very time consuming. Yeah it's so much respect to independent music artists because they are the ones out here you know grinding it out and making it happen so that to me you know and and you're the you're interacting with them on social media it's not some you know company with 50 like it's them and we appreciate that we appreciate the interaction. Yeah how do we bridge country music and faith-based messaging? Yeah so you know it's very interesting to have watched the this evolve um speaking of dolly back at dolly's age it was called sensory golf and it has we have for a long time we have had country artists to do faith-based thoughts and so it's very interesting um when I stepped into it you know the ones that there was like a generation before me that had established this uh Christian country if you will um and it was like oh my god it's like I love this I had never heard of it when I

1:35:29reporting the next one so you you're kind of juggling you know two songs at the same time and it oh my goodness like it's interesting because as an artist you have to have discernment in the songs that you release I've always said it has to be a message I feel like that I need because I don't feel like I can properly deliver it and if I'm the one who needs it I can't be the only one who needs it so that kind of helps to suffer if I've got like five songs on the table what's the message right now um of course we never know what the music's on the day we we have no idea it's it's like you know throwing putty to the wall and praying it's thick like we don't know what it's gonna do but this one has been incredible um the reaction is you know it's been so much more than I ever dreamed and um I was talking to somebody the other day and they were like I don't know how but you somehow put the whole story in one song and we can't even explain that and I was like I can't even tell you how I wrote that but when it starts coming you've got to get

1:36:31it down I don't care if it's 230 at the morning you get up you record on that phone or you write it down because it will be gone in the morning I assure you that I've lost the weight too many songs do with that so can't eat damn yeah when when the spirits flowing through you the ideas are coming at you you better spit those things out I love this uh cooter Daniel you co-wrote this is he's your producer your co-writer who's cooter yeah so cooter is producer Karater he is the one who introduced me to music it a professional scene he worked with Conway back in the day he's been around with Judd that will be him uh he's been around the music scene for a minute and I keep asking him to write a book because of all of the history of my bro you do to do this um but he's the one who introduced me to uh Christian country to do a music professionally like I had never known of course I grew up like so many singing in first so this was like came out of nowhere you're like what in the world um but so he's like can you song right and I was like no idea I've never even

1:40:47I'm happy to be here with you on Cowboy State Daily and man you've been doing this while you got a voice for that man well thanks just a little while are we back home yes sir I'm in Kentucky yes sir nice because where where where was this rising star casino resort that you performed out a couple days ago it was in Indiana okay yeah so he's all over the place and he's performing tonight to is this right stick tight John Michael Montgomery gave me this song nickname he sure did yes yes he did how are we hanging out with him when we're a kid well my dad was a game warden and turkey taxidermist for 25 years and through both businesses he met a lot of people and mounted turkeys for a lot of people including some big name people John Michael was one of them so the neighboring town that I live in years ago John Michael owned a farm and we was hanging out and I was doing what a

1:41:48country kid does Jeff I was out playing around in the woods and I got caught up in a stick tight patch so and wow I mean I don't know what you call them but here in Kentucky the little triangular birds that stick to you when you walk out in the woods yeah whether patches we call them stick tights and I was caked head to toe when them my mom had a chore and they're hard to get off and John thought it was a funny thing everyone said born we're gonna have to start calling you stick tight so stick tight step no pun intended wow yeah we call them like cockaburs or something out here yeah yeah that's right yes sir that's what they are yeah and they're a pain in the ass or they're not fun hopefully your hair wasn't that long because it'd be awful to get and you know it wasn't that but I can only imagine if it was yeah that's insane because where were you born and raised in Kentucky where are you at now so my home said it's Willisburg Kentucky or county see the Springfield it's about an hour south of Louisville

1:42:52Kentucky rural farmland community and I absolutely love it my neighbors are far apart love my neighbors but I love my peace too you know what I mean and but it's great I love it farmland got cornfield out back and it's great I love it yeah cuz are you are you still farming a little bit with my dad here and there you know just basically grow food plots for like deer and turkey and whatnot around and that's about it okay yes sir so I mean when when the guitar come into play was hang out with any of these country guys we're like well maybe I'll start doing this well I've always had a fascination by it you know as a hypergenic kid running around the house well would stop me and my tracks if somebody was on television singing or playing a guitar playing some kind of instrument I was just in awe that's what would stop me my grandparents got me a little toy

1:43:53guitar and I tried to emulate what they was doing then they got me a semi-real guitar and I tried to figure out what those people were doing on TV and I was in the four-wheeler race and a motor cross at a young age and but I still always gravitated back to the guitar my dad was like oh he's still saying attached to this let's let's just talk about lessons so a nine years old it took my first guitar lesson learned some chords a few basic scales and from there I started picking up by ear and then just started teaching myself and I hit the ground running ever since and I love it I absolutely love it well it's pretty damn good at the guitar how much do we play I mean is it every day what's the routine every day yes sir I man I just about live with it in my hands if I don't if I don't I start getting the shakes you know I start to have a withdrawals mom kid but but it's it's it's daily quite a bit and during the week when I'm at home I'm fortunate enough

1:45:02to teach guitar so it's it's in my hands constantly yeah there's there's a cool video I was gonna talk to you about that because yeah there's you posted something not too long ago where a young boy's sitting there in your teaching him guitar that's gotta be very rewarding and probably keeps you motivated at the same time you hit the nail on the head Jeff absolutely it is you know I I enjoyed teaching and students you know there's some catch on quicker than others and the ones that don't catch on there's quick that's fine I put more nurture and more time into them and then when they start getting it man it's a great feeling rewarding and they remind me a lot of me when I'm younger you know when they're hungry for it and want it it's it's good to help them along the way yeah and then to watch them progress is probably pretty sweet well another thing we're rewarding being an independent artist you never you never know you just posted a video of a lady getting a

1:48:13reliable so yeah and now he's got a whole box of strings he didn't have to worry about it his latest album cornbread mafia what tell us about this song stick date okay so cornbread mafia um give a little Kentucky education to the wild me if i that's in the world wide so the cornbread mafia was the biggest marijuana growing syndicate in the entire world in the 80s and 90s they were huge and they operated out of Kentucky Minnesota Indiana a little bit in the Midwest but anyway and just throw this out there like set I don't judge anybody that does it but I don't do the stuff myself I don't I'm a storyteller at the end of the day so um but I was so intrigued by the story the cornbread mafia I'm like man this this deserves a song in itself so a friend of mine a musician named sweepy walker we got together put our hands together

1:49:15and co-wrote a song and dedicated to these guys so the main guy who was the godfather and grass his name was Johnny Boone he was the head of the entire operation and then the big big brothers uh joquith and jimmy were like uh the second in command people and then you had a bunch of others and then the whole quote unquote mafia people but they were down home good people and tried to get back to the community and now they're going legal by growing big and boon hint but anyway uh when we made music video we asked hey uh one or if we could get the actual guys in it and they agreed to be in and it was so cool Johnny Boone himself got to make a cameo on the music video once out of the big brothers and it was just so honorable to have them apart and uh it was a good time writing it a great time making the music video yeah that's awesome well and even your new track Anna what you know we'll get into that he is a storyteller he likes he likes digging up all this

1:50:18Kentucky history uh as stick tight because even i mean Hammond's Creek Road this is even a local legend yes sir yeah that was uh i go ahead where are you finding these i mean is this are people telling you these stories are we digging them up what's going on a little bit of both so Hammond's Creek Road is a real road in Anderson County lardsburg in tucky and Hammond's Creek Road is actually tied to my family lineage that's where all the acons side of my family grew up on my dad's side and my great granddad was a moonshiner and so was my great uncle and how that song come about is like two characters infused into one because everything that picked in that song happened in real life and i just merged my great granddad and my great uncle into one character in this song just to make it flow better but that's a little bit about my

1:51:19family heritage right there and stories from my dad and my other family members uh and we come available to the song with it yeah and then what was the reaction when you're like i have a song called kougers do it better you know what it got a really good reaction um i i i wrote it as a fun thing i'm like hey let's just put it out there and see what happens and we got really good reception you know but it's one of those things uh you're either going to like it or maybe some people may turn a day off here to it but it's a fun one and uh when we played it shows it gets the girls up dancing they know the words they're singing along to it so that makes me feel good if they're resonating with it let's have some fun you know so we had a good time uh if you've seen the music video my cousin god bless it's hard we brought him in and all the kougers were

1:52:19pounding on him so he was a trooper yeah as long as the ladies like it then uh he's still doing good because i mean that and another one that's an old story how's your songwriting how's it evolved since since since everything started it's it's been a process you know it's it's one of those things that i wish i could say it was sort of in a routine but it's very aspiratic um there's sometimes where i'll try to make myself write something and sometimes it may be good and sometimes i'll never let that leave the book you know but uh it's one of those things i got to make myself do but inspiration has to hit me too and nine times out of ten it'll always come from a guitar lick or a melody or a riff i'm writing and then i'll write music around that so but

1:53:22over time it's really come a long way and i've had some great mentors along the way said hey that's that's a cool idea but going this direction instead and i'll like oh okay that makes more sense you know sometimes i my add brain i need to give back on path sometimes you know but uh it's come a long way and i'm just grateful to nurture the process along the way too because is it easier like when you have like with anna when you have the story is it easier to write the song because you already know where it's going or is it harder to write the song because you got to get there well it's more towards the first than the latter so with that song i had a great co-writer my producer Danny Bailey he's he's a genius when it comes to recording and songwriting i appreciate his love and mentorship but i told him about this story at the 1825 kinsakie tragedy well then he had that blank stare when he gets that blank stare gear

1:54:29start rolling you know and then i told him basic stuff and then he wrote a few lines down and next thing i know he already wrote a stanza i was like wait a minute let me catch up here and uh so we started playing a melody on a guitar and then we started putting words together down and next thing you know we had something and all that was left was again the studio and put even more magic and polished to it and that's when the song animal was born because this song sticktite just kind of mentioned it it's about a local legend 1825 kinsakie tragedy mm mm the anus husband gave his life she took hers i'm just thinking to myself well first who the hell told you this this story in particular okay uh so there's a venue i'm performing at tonight and a little town called bloomfield kinsakie now in the town of bloomfield we've got well just

1:55:32in Kentucky in general there's a bunch of historical markers on the side of the road says oh this was the home of someone's cellar this is where such event happened well there i'm all i'm fascinated by history well i've seen a history marker right beside this cemetery just over the hill and bloom field i ran about it so in this cemetery there's a lady named Anna and her husband they're buried in the same coffin that was their request to be buried arm and arm in the same coffin when both died so i'm like well wait a minute why why did they do that and what's the story behind it so there's a whole big story about it about love and tragedy jare bone was avenging uh his wife's love and uh it's like Romeo and Juliet he for lack of better terms he murdered a senator in his house and uh he went to jail for it and this was they sentenced him to hang and it

1:56:35was the first public execution to happen in kinsakie well Anna always visited jare bone every single day and leading up to the execution they both decide hey we can't live without the oven so she stabbed herself it was fatal his stab wasn't fatal and they found him and took him and strung him up in the gallows anyway that's harsh man wow he was already yeah but anyway their request was to be buried arm and arm together in the same coffin and in recent years there's been supposed sightings of Anna's ghost so the part uh uh Anna's that you walking through this life even though your god we still see you from time to time uh those were recording incidents of people seeing her ghost a lady dressed in an error that wasn't of this time and it's always the same they don't like uh anytime anybody approached her she'd be like i have to go be with my husband then turn around and disappear and it was always an intense

1:57:38fog and disappeared toward the cemetery now ghost uh paranormal stuff if you believe in her if you don't that's not neither here there but it makes for a good story yeah it does and it deserved a song so that's what we went with yeah uh going check it out in the in the music video who shot this who did this some good friends of mine they're called eternal layer productions they're from right here in central kinsaki great group of people uh they're a up and coming independent film company and they had made a small i guess you could call it like a small pilot to like a christian western sort of uh show or movie what have you and they're trying to release the damazon prime and i really like their production when i went to the premiere and i said hey would you guys be interested in experimenting and making music videos they said well we've never done that sort of thing and then we did one and then next thing you know i've done three more

2:13:45we're all based out of Nashville yep youtube previously played together in gloom girl mfg yes their last release was 2024 so how long after that fizzled before you two were like well let's start something else i got we both kind of got pushed out of that band is complicated but uh officially out of that band January of 25 and then basically didn't touch a guitar for five months just doing other stuff didn't really have the passion behind it for a while and then we went and saw bad nerves do you know bad nerves no sweet punk band from uk they have their like remones pop rock to them um but anyway we saw bad nerves with our now lead guitarist in the band Kenny and after it we just like we just need a jam it doesn't matter what comes from it but they're both telling me that we just need a jam and then after we jam that weekly in meeting every week since so i just felt very natural yeah bad nerves

2:14:51a is it says this is that this can't be them it says it's a okay here we go maybe this is it no a jazz band no no very much yeah i don't think this is okay here we go bad nerves back in London today uh you know they they just did a show with the darkness that must be them okay yeah so they were the inspiration to to get you going and anything yeah yeah they would have said like fuck you gotta do it well way to go bad nerves to get the guys back because what's this story you got stabbed in the neck at a gas station yeah dude so June of 2024 yeah i was going to load up the tour van for a gloomgur girl tour and so i was on my way to Ethan's house and uh i like he called me so i pulled off the side of the road to answer his call and you know he's like you don't need to come help load up i you know we got to take care of and i was like well you know i'll come at you know double check everything and whatever so i'm

2:15:54i get back on the road and stop for gas real quick and was just gonna you know top off my tank and and i get out of my truck and yeah fiddle with the car reader and like dude comes out of the woods with a pocket knife and just like came up behind me there was no provocation and stabbed me like five times got me in the neck and the eye and the head and uh yeah had like bleeding in my brain I had a bunch of skull fractures and i just had to fight for my life and i don't know survived i guess it was intense but uh yeah it took them like three months to catch the guy but there was like a neighbor in the neighborhood nearby because he lived in the neighborhood nearby and one of the guys there had a run in with him after my stabbing and then he reported you know i think this is the same guy that you know stabbed this guy in this at the gas station next door and then i guess the detectives ultimately linked it and i had to go in and do a photo lineup and pick them out of

2:16:56a out of a photo lineup and and yeah okay he's been in he's been in jail like you know deliberating they're still doing deliberations to this day um on what his sentence will be but yeah it's total freak accident i didn't go on that tour we had that we had to rearrange some things there but that's insane so i mean just obviously the guy's not mentally there or what i mean yeah that's that's my thinking i mean i've lost a lot of sleep over this you know i don't know exactly why that that happened but i can only assume he was on drugs or you know messed up some way like i don't know it could be schizophrenia um but yeah obviously sick and i don't know that's like a pretty intimate way to try to take someone's life like a random stranger's life you know with a knife that's like pretty gnarly well while you're pumping gas that was last thing

2:21:06another line lost your girl lost your band was it worth it in the end uh who we taking a shot at is this is someone in particular here what's going on yeah those were the other members of gloom girl that's what i kind of figured what what i when i was uh listening to this and reading the lyrics i was like i think this is uh going back to the gloom girl days yep yep yes even wrote the first verse i wrote the second and it's just our way of kind of moving on from that whole just putting it behind us and let's just put all in our first song kind of push it away and just move on and you both got to put your uh two cents in so that that probably is even better yeah feels good yeah cathartic just uh i would chalk it up to misunderstandings you know across the board in that aspect and and that was our way of yeah working through it putting out putting out art and shameless art you know i think uh yeah

2:22:11the music video i don't know how to pronounce her name uh janeja janeja was this her idea was this your guy's idea who's it was uh my wife's idea to do the clown stuff and then we expanded on it from there but love how the themes of it all just being a clown show how that tied in it was also big to do with the manager we had at the time and just kind of how the music industry is a mess so kind of exploring that and then kind of just became a psychedelic circus and had fun with it yeah it's it's a great video with the dolls at the front and then yeah you guys turning into clowns is the uh the music video because goes through did you just celebrate an anniversary with Ruthie what's what's happening Ethan oh we just got married oh you just got married oh wow well congrats thank you what what was that it was outside of bend organ and black butte okay because i was like this this doesn't look like nashville this

2:24:22giving you guys ideas for the music video yeah we definitely share music as a love together okay i love having rock bands on from Nashville cuz what's the big i mean everyone says Nashville that's the country town well not really anymore what what's the advantages disadvantages of you guys being in Nashville what you got to see one it's a pretty poppin city you know in all regards to all genres of music you know everything every genre has its own pocket i really feel like there's been a turning point lately in the rock scene um you know it seemed like it was kind of washed out there for a while and overshadowed by the country scene um but it seems like we're headed in a direction where rock is kind of getting a resurgence and it's really good to see because that's like our obviously our bread and butter um but yeah our our friends and band

2:25:25limbarty just were enrolling stone and they've they've kind of been popping off on social media and i mean that was like one of the first bands that i saw when i moved to Nashville so in like 2015 it was like i saw them play tomato arts fest and funny enough my wife is a sound engineer and she was mixing the show uh so that's what i remember from it and they were like astronaut suits or something on the on the stage during like hundred degree weather and i was just really impressed with like their showmanship and and they're just a great rock band um and so yeah it's been it's been fun to kind of be a part of the scene again and kind of start experiencing the the culture of the culture change of kind of going from what feels like a more country oriented scene to more of a rock oriented scene obviously obviously they're they're all still booming and alive but uh yeah i'm kind of excited to be a part of the next wave of of the rock scene coming out of there

2:26:27and there's so many venues that there's always a place to play for any type of band yeah yeah that's the good thing it tons tons of opportunities uh we're chatting with Ethan and Steven from we the rats go check them out uh their brand new single pop off is out now well speaking of costumes the pop off video Ethan this is like your top gun green you've got like patches covering up the stuff what where'd you get this why are you wearing this what what's behind it um besides music i do a lot of vintage dealing from clothes to CDs to vinyl to audio and everything above but i got that as a part of a vintage club by and it fit perfect so i'm like this is it well this it was it was filmed by the same gal yes but you're the only one in it mm-hmm why was that yeah we talked about the two videos before we made on how the first one

2:27:31was going to be more of a full band performance and then kind of create a narrative for the second one um just kind of like the idea of telling the story of this kind of washed up guy living and working out of a junkyard it's actually my neighbors junkyard so we were able just to go there after hours and film there until we were done he was awesome for that um but kind of tying into the themes of the song how your life can just slip away it's kind of about loving someone who's self-destructive and how you can watch someone's life just kind of fly by um yeah yeah it's it's another great music video go and check it out pop off by we the rats we got like a minute to go here i mean steven kind of mentioned it we're looking for the album there's a little clip of all dog no bone do we have more music in the can what's happening oh yeah yeah we're we're locked and loaded on on at

2:31:45up and I'm driving up into Mount Vernon Kentucky beautiful area it got me going man I want to live here one day this is great and I'm driving by this big barn this huge barn and it says real country music and I was like well I've got a country music band from West Virginia I'm producing I want to go see if I can get him a gig and I pull up and a bunch of dudes kind of come out they're all wearing black t-shirts and I'm like that don't look like country music guys you know and I go hey man are you in a band and he goes yeah I'm a drummer is like you playing tonight and he said yeah and he looked at my head he goes Tader Johnson I said hey man he's like I listen to Wasteland all the time man and I was like this is so funny I'm like in the middle of nowhere Kentucky yeah and I was like yeah he was like there's a battle of the bands there's four rock bands playing tonight here to see who's going to open for puddle a mud in a month or something and I go get out of town I was like well I'm going to go do this interview and I'm going to come back and hang out all night

2:32:47and I did and I met four great bands a bunch of other people you know I met a lot of these people I talked to but I never got in front of our techs you know managers and the whole and I just thought what are the odds that I was the one time I leave to go do something which is maybe once every six you know a lot this last month but before that you couldn't get me out of the house I've had guys back do you want to come to the show I'm like no no I did it man I did it but it was fun you know I've been sober but I'm on that train so much now that it doesn't even I don't it was real tough going at the end of 10 years when I was trying to get sober and surrounded with let's just say debauchery might be a good way to say it the good Christian way to say it but it was you just surrounded it and then you just honestly had gotten quite boring because you're playing the same 10 songs every night and I want to create man that's why you said 17 release this year

2:33:49I've been putting out two a month for five or six years because I just love creating and learning how to mix and master that's a different art form than writing the songs you know that's like like are you good at golf yeah that's great are you good at tennis that's a completely different four you know but you know a little bit from playing other things but like having to learn the science of how sound works I'm like my guy who built my acoustic traps he's like Tater it's physics man I was like bro I barely graduated high school I don't know I know music and now I know how to work on a house after living here I know how to encapsulate a cross space rewire electrical run HVAC I've like you know I've had time to go figure it out mess it up go redo it make it right undo it redo it you know so it's been I'm so much happier now and honestly I've been working on my cross space so much that it's healed my back which is unbelievable like today I sit here in the least amount of

2:34:53pain that I have ever at 46 then I have in my life just because I'm in down there working nonstop trying to get this encapsulation done and get it right you know well it's crazy because first like this jellicote Tennessee when you move there it's probably still is it's one of the poorest counties in the country you had this yeah just beaten down house that you moved into look like it looked like a fight clubhouse yeah really look like that's why I ended up calling my first solo project Tyler cuz of like this is funny cuz it feels like but you know I'm a I'm a I I toured so much I mean I've slept with homeless people in France man I've done like this had four walls okay cool and it had big tall it's a big old house I needed I need space you need a drum room you know a studio room a place for me to stay I know I built an atmosphere it's like but I knew and the price was you know I was literally going through a divorce and had nowhere to go

2:35:54I was staying my I was 36 and I was staying my mother and I had lost my faith in God and then and this house brought me back to him because I said Lord if you're real show up I can't afford anything I make royalties and I rent out that house and make some money off of it but I can I don't have a job you know I'm like I'm not in 10 years anymore you're gonna build a studio and a record label yeah right dude you know I wouldn't rent my house to me if I met me I'd be like no you don't have a job get paid for so I'm like looking at these places I can't afford anything and there's places I wouldn't want to build the studio cuz it's all gonna get stolen and I I prayed and I was driving around the interstate I remember that I still passed this exit I was beating the steering wheel and screaming and cussing God I shouldn't be doing it but I was so mad because like what do you want me to do I'm gonna have to go back to this person I don't think I'm supposed to be with because they have the money and I to survive I'm not gonna be able to survive I can't

2:36:55live with my mother I love my mother so much she's my favorite person in the world but I can't live with her and I sure as heck can't build a studio in her house right it's just not gonna happen so when I mean I literally was crying out to God as I will fell asleep that night and then I woke up the next day with the message from a guy I had never met and he said hey Tate I know you're producing now I had built a studio in my ex's house and I was trying to get it off the ground he didn't know we were getting a divorce yet you don't post that till after it's done right and uh and uh we uh I saw it and it said I said okay great work I can go I can be mobile I'm Tate or I've done this for years I can take some microphones and make it still make it sound good and when I clicked on his page I read it it said somebody should rent my house in jellico and I'm telling you I had prayed for a light and a light just came right out of the phone I can't explain it because you think I was crazy but I wasn't on hallucinogenic drugs I wasn't on anything I was sober

2:37:56but I was like what was that and I realized that that this was that moment of you know here's God just showed up and he's giving me this place and I go hey man I'll record you but I want to rent your house I don't even know where jellico is dude I'm but I'm Tater I've lived like a gypsy for 20 years you know it doesn't matter to me so I'm like I want to rent your house and he goes yes sir and I go okay that's that's a good start and I go man I know I don't have a lot of money right now um you know and he said Tater I've been listening to you for years the old 10 years card you know I'm still pulling that out till this day thanks guys and you know I he goes how does $200 a month sound and it's like it sounds like I'm going back to church because this is a literal miracle so I drove out and again the house was right it was right it just needed a paint job

2:38:57and it needed some electric electrical plumbing you know but it had four walls and big rooms and I didn't care because I just needed somewhere to go and then you know it's times gone on is proved to be the correct move you know if you always look at x-wives x-bands x-friends x- Anybody whenever they can't get something out of you that's who they really are you know and I mean that when they extend okay that's who you really are hiding behind oh you can't get me to do this or do this that you know so I always look back if they show you who they are believe and then go okay well cool I get to go on there's so many other people on this planet that I can go make music with and go hang out with and be friends with and and just figure out but if somebody's really kind to you after the fact and loving then you go oh shoot maybe I made a mistake about those people luckily for me I don't have I don't have any of those feelings

2:40:02I'm just thank you Jesus for setting me free I'm free of the bondage of all of it now I get to go just find artists that are excited about making music that maybe don't know have the knowledge of being like yeah you can't get playing those chords let's try this let's try this let's do this and it's like it's such a great place to be artistically surrounded with people that do that even last night I was like this is such a great energy in this place all these bands in this community I'm like man I'm gonna end up living up here you know it's not that far you know or at least coming up here to scout for the label and for the studio you know it was it was a really it kind of re-ignited that thing and me of being going and seeing a great live show you know of like oh this these guys are playing these covers I mean this one guy saying like Creed and like STP and like I mean like we're talking five or six singers that are it's hard to do one of those songs and

2:41:03I blew you thrown out and this guy I was like good Lord and those guitar players were hitting note for note and I'm like sitting there and I'm going godly the last time I heard this I was in Italy behind Alston chains playing it you know I'm like remembering my old life is crazy I'm like what a story this is nuts you know because I forget most days I'm like I got to do this song I got to get this mix done I got to bug my my partner Steve who helps me with every stame C-beong he's a porpo and he does all the videos but I bug him to death about listening to my mixes guess he has become one of the most critical listeners of music that ever I still think gods help it I'm like how did you figure that out I miss that you know but he was like it's it's doing this and I'm like where and I'm going out to the car and we're trying to like I'm in here with like beakers trying to figure it out you know but I love it man it's like my whole goal in this is to be able to keep doing it and just build this ridiculous facility maybe in Vount Mount Vernon

2:42:08that I can just have bands and they can stay there it's like a compound like a tater vision compound you know but I don't I'm not I don't ever want to get too caught up in oh I'll be only happy if this happens because I'm happy today man you know I'm happy I'm having fun and we've got this and we're going to you know Dustin came into my life and I didn't know that with the major resolve that he was going to do more than one song and three years later I can't get rid of you know I love him so much you're like we got to the end I was like let's do this acoustic kind of heavy days of the new let's kind of just see with that and then we kind of got to the end of it I was like well you want to do like some heavy stuff he's like yeah and I was like cool and then we just kept writing and working and writing and working and then he's the one who got me involved in the awards and you know he's just been such a great blessing and he's such a good hang we had such a good time at that pre-party the night before the Isis this year I mean that was like that was another great

2:43:10night of being out like I don't go out and I don't drink but I can still go out and chop it up with the bellas and yeah have and I'm a lot quicker now that I don't drink so I can I'm zipping them left and right you know I mean it was a lot of fun I love all my artists man we're like a community we just put out a box car graffiti album and they're a great rock band from Illinois that makes the trip and has to deal with me you know my name's Tater but my real nickname is the dictator because I'm very I'm not mean I swear I'm not mean about it but I'm gonna tell you if I think something's too long or boring or the wrong key or you know I want to I want to I call it spaghetti I'm just throwing everything at the wall and going oh this is good because I don't like anything so if I think something's good we're probably doing all right you know what I mean it's just years of being in those rooms and being in particular and just being but at this point I've nurtured that muscle so much that it's pretty instant of being like

2:45:15that's who I was doing the interview for with his uh up in where he lives he lives in Mount Vernon yeah and he's a dear friend Chuck said become a dear friend through all this and a lot of these guys do because we we're gonna band together basically and I'm just Tater so I can juggle all of it because I'm Tater and I don't I have no responsibilities I love dogs but I don't even have one because I don't want any responsibility other than to my art so they announced them and I'm like I can't believe because it's a primary there's a lot of country music artists there that win and it's kind of a primary I was like walking looking I was like there's a lot of cowboy hats and there's not a single trucker hat in here you know except for me so and you know so for them to win and I Chuck was confident about it and I was like Chuck you got to be look man don't you know don't be gassing yourself up and then we get up there and I'm yelling at him you were right you called it and so that was like surreal like I can't believe that we won and it's a great song we had a guy this another Dustin who lives right at the road for me he's one of the best guitar players I know

2:46:19and he happened to be while we were working on it he was like we hear it and then he heard it and he's like well if you want me playing guitar on it I was like bro we can't afford you it's like I'll do it for free Taiters is a good jam I said it wow okay man cool yeah I was like I'm gonna call you so he came in and he did all these like almond brother licks that are just unbelievable musical and I had put down some Hendrix kind of licks and and the gammam is like I don't know man I really I like what you were doing I was like I like what I was doing too but what Dustin did is like you it's just a beyond musical I'm telling you it's really good and they're like all right man we'll trust you I said cool you should at this point so you know we just had this great song so to win and like oh man this is great so I go back to sit down and as soon as my butt hits the seat they go gold the major resolve and I just go this is the greatest moment of my life I get to get right back up and go back up there and now I kind of said my thank you

He's also was in Atlanta. He's gonna be a national tomorrow for the Joe's You Music Awards. Well, we mentioned it. I interviewed Tater like a decade ago. I've been a huge fan of his for a very long time. I think I own more Tater art pieces than anyone in the country here. I have a few. Yeah, that's great. I think I need to get back to it. I haven't done it in years. Let's see. I know. Oh, yeah. Sure. Yeah. Here. I think it's one of the first ones I got.

2:50:29Yeah. Yeah. This was like the dancer dancer. I remember it. Yeah. Which I had my office. That's cool, man. I don't know. Yeah. It's like I did so many of them. But now, you know, it was like a thing of, you know, when you're in a radio rock band, it's playing a lot of the same songs over and over again. So I used to do so much. I used to get something out of abstract painting. Yeah, man. How fun. There's so much. Like, which one was that? So it's like fire fox or something. Something fires. Yeah. So it's like I used to do so much more of that because I never got to let you do on a lot. Holy cow. That was a good one. That's a good one. Yeah, this one says the witch on it. Yeah. That was me working it out with the black heart. Yeah. It looks better upside down. I like that. Yeah. That's how I have it on my wall is upside down. Yeah. That looks cool. Yeah. Yeah. And I had somebody on my podcast a couple of weeks ago. He goes,

2:51:29what, what, what's that nut sack on your wall? I go, that's a black card. Come on. Hey, come on, man. Come on. That's funny. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was like, oh, that was cool. This one's, I think, oh, this one's called ovaries. Oh, yeah. Geez. And yeah. So how these are from years ago? These are decade old at least. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. They're at least a decade old. I have two more over on my wall. Two, one of them's got a cross on it. That must have been when you were battling, battling the Lord. Oh, yeah. I fought him for years. It was my joke. It's usually, I know he hits hard because my back still hurts from it, but it don't really hurt no more, which is unbelievable. He had a prize of Lord for that. I knew he would heal me, but you know, I used the, he gave me a gift when I was a kid. I got saved with the piano and I understood music then. I understood it the way I do now. I just didn't maybe have the coordination to do it. And then when I was lost, you know, in the

2:52:30Bible, they talk about the tower of Babel when they try to build a, he goes, I'll just confuse everybody. Nobody will be able to communicate. So what God did something to me to where everything sounded like the same note. I can't explain it, but I remember trying to play the scale that I know the same scale I play now, but it was like, it all sounds like the same note, you know, and realizing this later when I come back to God and where I had a chiropractor, basically, I had broken, I had fallen down stairs from drinking and broken a bunch of ribs and my shoulder, basically my back. And I just walked it off because I'm a little redneck, right? And this guy popped all that stuff in one thing and it cut the nerve in my hand. So I couldn't feel my fingers or my hand. I could still play the guitar, but I knew I was like, I can't feel this. And I was struggling, I think even by the end of the last 10 years acoustic tour, I was like, I couldn't play, but I could fake it, you know, I can get through it,

2:53:31but it wasn't good. And I had real light strings on it. I had like every, but it was like really bad. And I realized like at the end, I couldn't feel like by the end of it, I had no feeling in it. And I just thought, this is not good, but, you know, as I healed and got closer with the Lord again, and getting to this house and ended up going back to a church and we're talking a fun, pedicostle hooting and hollering and, you know, but I grew up in that. So it's nothing for me, but I remember God, I felt like God was pulling me to do it. And I just went, I told my mom, is a godly woman, I go, I'm going to church, she goes, what? I said, there's something going on, mama, I'm telling you, there's these things happening. I can't explain it, but it's pushing me in. And then, you know, they had a band. And before I knew it, I was up there playing bass with, I couldn't even hold the string down. I was like literally struggling to hold the string down. So my whole life, I had been worried about getting on a motorcycle or breaking my arm and all this about not being able

2:54:35to play. And my actions of, you know, living and sin and not using my gift for God had still taken my hand away. And then one Sunday night, I'll never forget it. I can see it the moment, I can feel the moment right now when I felt my fingertip and I pressed on the string and it like the nerve or whatever I had stretched it out where God goes, all right, now I think you get it. And I said, Lord, I was playing, I was like crying because it was, it was, you know, it was a moment that it was like, God had given me my gift back. And I was so grateful because I'd be up there playing. And as it was healing, everybody would see me up there doing, I'd be doing this. I'd be shaking my hand, trying to get blood to it. Like that to everybody's like, what are you doing? I'm like, my hand don't work. I'm trying to get, I'm trying to get the feeling that like, how is your hand out work? But you can play because by the end of it, I'm like, but you know, I'm like, I'm tater again, you know, or even further like a guy who played in 10 years, this guy Chad, a cinema thing

2:55:37we were working on. He's like, when you learn how to play the guitar, I'm like, I don't know. I just can do all this. I can just do all this now. And it's really easy where before there was like some sort of blockage. Now, it might have been drugs or alcohol or, you know, just God going, I'll wait until you're done being an idiot. And then when you're done being an idiot, I'll give this all back to you to make sense. So it was like, it was a pretty unbelievable moment. And I promise to in that day, I said, Lord, I'll do whatever you want me to do. I'll give it all the way tomorrow. If you come down and tell me, I'll do whatever. Just don't take my hand away. Just please give me my hand. Please let me play my bed and pick my guitar and the things that and be able to work and, you know, and not have any pain and just lower please. I've got a bunch of injuries from, you know, all the pictures of me, I was sent to the people and they're me flying through the air. I'm like, you know, I landed. Their pictures are cool, but the landings where the injuries happen.

2:56:38You know, but and you just can't sustain it. And I don't have an off switch. So that's why I can't drink or do anything because I'm 150 miles an hour or I'm taking a nap and I'm good at taking the apps and I'm good at being 150 miles. I'm not good at my joke is I have no self control, but I have a lot of discipline. So I'm like, I can't I don't want to try to drink. My dad was alcoholic. His dad is all over my bloodline. I'm Irish. Come on. I, you know, you know, we shouldn't be drinking. It's very well known. So, but on tour, there's nothing else to do, you know, like, when you get up, you're like, okay, I want to go find coffee in a bathroom. Okay, that's your number one thing. And then you've got, if you don't have a sound check, you don't have a gig till the end of the day. So you're sitting with the same people that you might not be getting along with anyway because everybody's kind of miserable. Not all the time. Some of the tours were great. Some of the moments were great, but it's still it's groundhog day. Yeah, the ground. It's every day. It's

2:57:44like man. And then, you know, you're spending money because you're like, hey, man, I'm trying to eat healthy. Well, good luck with that. That's going to cost you 50 to 100 bucks a day. And, you know, I'm trying not to drink. Well, that's the whole, you know, like the party afterwards became more important than the gigs to me, which is bad. And, you know, it was just, it was not sustainable with what I was at. Now here, I wake up, I make my own coffee, I get to my home, I'm like, going here, fire up the studio. Okay, I'm gonna work on what I got. Okay, what's the house? I need to go work on. I'm gonna rewire this electrical. There's like, every since I've moved here, I've never, I've never been bored one single day. There's a whole upstairs. I need to go refinished. Like, there's literally a list this long. And I love it. I, for me and my overactive mind and me, my hyper, I drink a lot of coffee, obviously, but, you know, I get stuff done. And, you know,

2:58:45I'm putting out more stuff than like normal studios do in a decade. I'm doing that in a year, just because I, I have an addiction to music. I love it. When a mix is great and I'm like, bro, this sounds good because the trick in the studio is you get speakers that suck, that sound real bad. And if you can make your mix sound good on those, I always go, I give up, I can't, I can't make it sound any better. And then I go listen to everywhere else. And it sounds unbelievable, but like it's just, you're just setting yourself up for failure, you know, but it's a great trick that I learned. I went to this masterclass of the guy who's actually, it's his speakers, the name Crystal or algae who's done shine down green day. I mean, the biggest of the big. And he was like, Tater. And I was like, yeah, what's up, man? He's like, what are you doing here? And I was, because we were supposed to work together years ago. And I go, I'm going to do your job. And he goes, okay, you know, so we've, we've, we still communicate with each other. And I hope I may get him to

2:59:49mix some stuff, but he's got a big manager. You know how that whole world is. Yeah. We got to, they got to, we'll see. I've been talking to him a little bit, but you know, it's like a lot of my artists are happy with it. I'm like, well, you got to go pay this guy X amount of money if you want to mix him to mix it. And he's like, could he make it sound better? I said, I'm sure he could. But, you know, are you happy with it? I'm happy with it. I think it sounds great. Man, you know, it's like, there's the thing about the music business where you got to be real careful. With people's intentions, you know, that's why I do the no time limit thing with my artist, why I'm not going to take somebody's money knowing that the song is bad or boring or whatever. And go, here you go. Here's your song. I just, to me, being an old punk rocker, there's no more selling out than that to me as an artist. I mean, like, that's what I tell these guys. I was like, I was in your position where I remember the division record we did. We paid the producer God rest his soul $75,000. Now, this guy was drunk by noon every day. He

3:00:56had a white wine in his water bottle. And I remember getting the name of the record, the record's called division. And it's mostly because of me going, this guy sucks. I don't care. I'm the dictator. This guy doesn't know what he's doing. We're a rock band. And he's making a sound like a, I don't know what he's making it, but it's not rock and roll. It's not, you know, we're in here where they recorded Alzen Chains and Sound Guard. And we're in Seattle. And what we're, what I'm hearing back, I'm like, this doesn't sound that guitar tone is not good. It's like not even crunchy. It's not even, it's too clean. Like, we're a rock band, guys. So that created, you know, when you name a record division, there's a reason why there's a real, and look, man, being in a band is hard. I don't care what anybody. It's like being in a marriage. It's like anything being with that many personalities. And look, there was some, there was some super talented guys in that band, but I got to play with and learn from. And, you know, and I knew that some of these guys,

3:02:02since they were teenagers, you know, like since I used to pick a couple of high school, they were real young. And, but I knew they were like the best, most talented guys, even with Brian, you know, Brian was, I think I met him when he was 13 at his band practice because we were the older guys. And he was switching instruments to he's better than the drummer in the band. He was ripping the guitar and he goes, and I picked up his good lad, never played a real less Paul, and he let me play it. And he goes, I'm working on the drums. And I said, okay, and I started playing people with the sun by rage. And he just, he just started playing. He was playing all weird, open handed backwards. I was like, that's the most talented kid I've ever seen in my life. Like, I always tell people, I'm not the most talented guy in the room, but I know who is. I know who is. I can usually quick pick that out. And that's what's so hard to say. And I hadn't seen him in years, and I got a job back in groceries at Kroger. And he was working at the pizza place next door,

3:03:04and I walked in. Now, I hadn't touched a guitar in a year. I'd given up. I'm going to get a job. I'm going to go to school. I just, it wasn't where I was at, and have time. It was sitting in the closet. And I walk in the first thing he goes, you're just tater. You still jamming, and I go, absolutely. I live straight through my teeth, because I knew if I had a chance to be in a band with that guy, I was going to do it. And I did. And then I still remember, you know, it was a rocky start. And I remember being in a rehearsal. And I was like, man, I got school. I got work. I got this chick. I don't have time to do anything. I'm getting up in the morning, leaving all day, and getting back and not doing well in school, because, you know, I'm tater, and I just don't pay attention. Unless it's music, you know. And I remember being in there, and we played a cover of corn. It's on. And it was on. We were in that garage, and it was like a pentacostle hot,

3:04:05you know, a revival church, you can't service. I mean, it was on fire. And I go, I got done, and I go, we got done. Plants like, I can't ever quit this. This is that was too good. That was too good. So cut to a decade later, corn loves 10 years, loves the autumn effect. They take us on a tour all over the world. And guess what song they open their show with every single night, that same song. It's on. So I'm sitting in arena thinking about every time that comes on, I'm sitting there thinking, man, can you imagine how different I'm thank God I didn't quit that day because of the song. And now we're on tour with them. I mean, it's wild, you know, but it really is, there wasn't a lot of moments. I'm just like, I just don't know if I can do this. And that was like the original 10 years with the old singer before Jesse and before all that, you know, so it was, but when I heard Jesse sing, I knew we were going to do it already. I was like, I jumped over a couch. I'm like, that's it. We got it. We got it. Hey, we did, man. And, you know, I hate it that

3:05:09everything got to where it's at with those guys, but, you know, divorces are hard, man. They're hard. And I love them. And even if they see this, I love them. And I have no animosity. And I'll say, yeah, what kind? They'll say, you can bring any kind as long as it's some molasses cookies. And I'm like, oh, okay. So you want the molasses cookies? Yeah, they're pretty awesome. So the on benjifondak.com, I have the recipe posted because it was a joke at first. So many people were like, hey, I want the recipe for your cookies. It's so good. And so I thought, okay, people are wanting this. So I put it up and then people are like, you need to write a song because I would post videos that I'd be like, making cookies and they say, you should make a song about that. And finally, it happened. Yeah, it was bound to happen. Your career is just crazy. I love going down the

3:08:19rabbit hole. The conspiracy of thought. This rock band. I mean, one clip I'm listening, it sounds like rage against the machine. Right. Right. Absolutely. Yeah. It was. So that band started in 94. And so and I'm old. Beards don't lie. It's all white. And so I started with conspiracy. It's thought 15 years. We ended up with radio play and touring the United States. And we had some awesome openers playing with groups like Bad Religion and Kings X and you know, it was it was dope. Good run. And I love those dudes. But we all got old. You know, people started having kids started doing things. And so from there, it was on to a rock opera because that's what you do when you're, you know, don't want your band to stand right by rock opera. Yeah. And so and that was called Red Fist Revolution. The fall of Goliath. And it was very heady. And and then I worked in a

3:09:22band called Songhammer and we did music for like World of Warcraft. It's Starcraft. And we played like a video game conventions and armor. And so it was and then Benji Fonic is my passion project. Yes. And now now he's here. I watched the first interview with conspiracy of thought. You had hair back then. That's that's oh yeah. Oh yeah. Right. Yeah. Back in the day. You know, it's so funny. I had when I first started in the band like the bass player and I had this long blonde hair. Like my hair was like halfway down my back and people kept saying the bass player also long blonde hair. And so we are you guys brothers? We say yes. Yes, we are. And but then I cut it shorter and it kept getting shorter because the hair kept getting thinner for some reason and it just ended up gone. Yeah. He finally had his shave. But you kept the horns though forever. Yeah. Right. That was the thing for a long time. And but it got to the point where I so I have

3:10:26these two like hair horns that came down in Songhammer. That was a big deal too. Like people were always about we were these giant sunglasses and I had the hair horns. And but then it got to the point where I'm like, okay, I'm putting mascara in the hair horns just to make them thicker because they're falling out. And then I had to start naming them individually. Today we lost Jorge and we you know, you have a little burial on the backyard and it just got to the point where I had to stop fighting you know at the just slow progression of time that took it all. Go check that out. But what about Benji's songs? A girl named disco with one of our friends, Jessica Lynn Winnie and her husband

3:11:31Raymond. When we do these collaborations, do you write it? Do you approach them? Do we write it together? How does it work? Okay, that song. Okay. So that song had came off the back of another collaboration with a guy named Chris Jones. Yeah, who's buddy's weather? Who is a, he is a rock god. You know, so Chris had written a riff and a song idea called Dance Gravy. And it was funky and awesome. He had listened to my song Omega Funk 10,000 and he said, I want to write like a companion to that. And so he wrote it and then he and Jessica were touring for the Red Nink Files, which is their country like duo project. And they came through California. I had them over. They had some lasagna and I made cookies, of course. And we talked and Chris is like, I had this idea. And so he played the beginning of that. And Jessica's like, I'm going to sing on it.

3:12:35Chris is going to sing on it. And so I started writing and they let me produce it, which was really cool. And so I produced it. The song came out. And during that time, then Raymond said, oh, can I play piano on the, can I like do some funky organs? And I was like, yeah, we were all, yeah, do it. And it just became the snowball. Well, then Raymond had this idea, this like funk techno idea. And he sent it to me and he said, I have this idea. I don't know if you could do it, but it's like different parts in this song. And I heard it. And the very first thing I did, I think it was 10 minutes later, I sent back in the chat. Everybody in the club's been falling in love with this car, this car. And they were laughing. And they thought it was cheesy and funny. And but it was the spark. And then Chris couldn't do it because he was in the studio with the Chris Jones band. And so Jessica Ray and I said, okay, we'll do it. And I wrote, I took Raymond's

3:13:41music, hacked it all up. He sent me the tracks as individual tracks, which was wonderful. And then I played bass guitar drums on that and did an arrangement and did a whole bunch of rapping. But I also sang the first verse and did like the chorus. And then Jessica's like, what if that, you know, that part right before the chorus is just this building of all these harmonies. And I was, yes, yes. And it just it grew into what it became. And Jessica wrote the second verse. And then, and I wrote the first verse. And then we, we shared on those bridges. And I was rapping all over that thing because it was just so funky and fun. And I got to play disco guitar and bass and drums, which was just super exciting. So yeah, that was, that was an awesome collaboration. Yeah, a girl named disco. Go check it out in the music videos. Awesome too. 3:14:43the new norrisis no attention span? What's what's happening? I think so a few years back, it was, it was right at the beginning of COVID, a hip-hop group called Run the Jewels put out an album. And it is insanely good. It was their fourth album. It's a guy named LP and killer Mike and killer Mike, you know, his next album, one like Grammy for Best Hip-Hop album. I mean, insane. But this duo, they do these albums and it's almost like concept albums. You lit, they get, first of all, they give the albums away for free. So you get, and they do it as one long MP3. And so, but they want to listen to that way. You can then buy the album and all that kind of stuff. But they put out this song and it had all these connective pieces. And, you know, I mean, it's art. I mean, they really think through like what's in between the songs and how they flow into each other. And,

3:15:44I mean, it's almost like listening to like a Beatles or a Wings album or something. It's just really well thought out. But they do short songs. A lot of their songs are these shorter pieces. And I just, I am working on an album right now called Where the Light Shines Through. And so, I have more than three forces. The album is complete. And so, but 15 minutes ahead of insanity. And where the light shines through with two rap songs that I wrote at the same time. And so, I, after I had written them, I put these short songs together because they were almost like bridges to other things like bigger, longer, not rap songs like acoustic songs or funk tunes or things like that. And so, they're intentionally short because of how they're meant to fit in the album. Yeah. Where the light shines through this music video, you've got a history with this guy with

3:16:48David Fleming. I mean, for the seven years you've been doing it, you've been doing interviews with him. So that's kind of cool that you do the music video there. What happened was, so I think I've done 16 bitchy, funnig interviews with David Fleming. What happened was, so he had interviewed song hammer, my previous group, and loved it. And we did, you know, and we were working with Blizzard Entertainment and bigger companies and things like that. But when I started that project ended, and when I started Benji Fonic, I was like, I haven't done, I've done rock, I've done alternative music, I've done acoustic stuff, we've dabbled in pop, but I haven't ever done anything that was like dedicated to like, like alternative hip hop or things like that. And my early like in the 80s, I was in junior high in high school, run DMC, LL Cool J, the Beastie boys, I mean, like early hip hop, like at least

3:17:49the second wave that happened after, you know, the 70s in like just the non-recorded era, but the recorded era is where I grew up. And that was part of what I call my mental furniture, you know, that was part of my musical DNA. But I'd never, you heard in raging against, or in high-send raging against the machine, you heard in conspiracy of thought that some of the songs were like raging against the machine. And that's because as I was writing that early DNA was part of my writing style. And so I didn't think I was a good enough rapper. And so the bass, I would write the parts in the bass player, Mike partial, was playing bass, slap bass, and rapping at the same time. Phenomenal. But it got to the point where I said, okay, it's, I think it's time for me to do this. And lo and behold, I just got such a kick out of it. And so, fast forward, David Fleming, who had already done a lot of interviews with me with Songhammer, he started with Benjy Fonic and loved it.

3:18:56And so we started doing video countdown shows. So we're on the, my local MPR station. And then he has a show called KBC Arts. And he says, all right, we're going to do a half hour, we're going to talk. And then as soon as the interview ends, the video goes live. And so we're literally doing like a, like an MTV countdown or something like that. And we've done this 16 times. And so finally, David was like, it'd be funny if I was in a video. And I was like, oh, yes, it would. And I had seen the video for Beastie Boys. It's a 3 MCs and 1 DJ. And it's all light. It's one continuous shot. And they do it live. And the video is actually them doing the song live. And I thought, what if we, you want to be in the video, what if we did that? And then you do the chorus and I, and it just snowballed. And the studio was like, yeah, we want you to do it. And I was like,
