Why Lindsay Clancy’s Verdict Came Down to One Person

Seven days of deliberation. More than thirty-six hours behind closed doors. Eighty-plus witnesses. Three hundred exhibits. And when the jury in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial finally reported to Judge William Sullivan for the third time that they could not agree, the split was eleven to one.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington said the eleven wanted to acquit. The holdout, reportedly a male juror, would not follow the majority. Sullivan declared a mistrial at Plymouth Superior Court.

Clancy had pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. The defense argued postpartum psychosis and overmedication drove her actions. Prosecutors said she planned the killings and acted rationally.

Reddington tried everything in the final hours. He asked Sullivan to dismiss the holdout. He asked for a lesser-charge poll. He filed an emergency petition with the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. The court denied it. The mistrial stood.

DA Timothy Cruz must now decide whether to retry. Sullivan scheduled a September 29 status conference.
