My name is Mario Terabasi joined by Greg Boyson today. Chloe Thiel is producing the show remotely. Hey, it's baby steps. Yes, she's recovering from an illness, but she's day to day. We should be back to full strength on Tuesday, which will be really good. That's the plan. It'd be nice to

get see everybody again. Feels like it's been forever since the whole crew is here working together. I feel a little weird that we're running the show and there's no one at the church. No producer. Like I trust Chloe. I'm cool. I think it's going to be completely fine, but I look over there at the empty chair and I'm like, something's wrong. Are you still going? Is it okay? But we'll be good. We'll be good. Okay, so today we are talking about the Black Hawks training camp battles, some positional groups, some special teams units that we're looking at that, you know, there's actual competition for and some battles that they got to figure out through training camp in the cold open. I did mention a list. Scott Wheeler put out his 145 top U23 prospects. Now, this is Sky Wheeler, not Corey Prondman. I'm not going to go through the list, but in the list of the Black Hawks that he had on there, which were there were 11. He made some comparisons that I think would be really interesting to get into and talk about also Anton Frandel mentioned making

the playoffs as an expectation this year. So we can dive into that a little bit today as well, to start off in training camp battles, put up your fist to cuffs. Who's going to be in what spot? Where do you want to start? We got a couple of different places to discuss. No, I think we should start at the top and and with the top six. Who's in the top six? Once you figure out who's your top six, you can kind of trickle down and fill out the rest of the lineup. I think we have four guaranteed members of the top six top six and members of the top six Patrick Kane is playing in the top six. One Frank Nazar is playing in the top six. Two, Anton Frandel is playing in the top six. Three Roman cancer office playing in the top six. So there's four or six spots. I'd also probably put Tyler Prattuzy. So who's left? Tyler Prattuzy. Um, likely. Um, and then you have table teravining might be a candidate for top six. You have

nickel artists who should be a top six player based on what he brings, but still might not be their soul. Maybe not this year, but you've got that that's three guys for two spots. Is there anybody else you would consider? Would you consider? I would throw. So the six guys that we're talking about without the dart because this is strictly for training camp. I think we're in agreement on at least for the first five of the six. Um, teravining, largest, Ryan Green, I would throw into that mix because he did play the granite. It was with counterbordard, but he did play a lot in that group last year. Blaschel is a big fan, likes his smarts, likes his calmness on the ice. So I know people kind of cringe a little bit at that and should Ryan Green, is he projected to be a top six guy for his career? Probably not. I would say probably not. But had he had a little bit of puck last year? Nobody is. He would have, you know, close to 20 goals and you'd be like, oh,

that's not that bad of an idea. He had 19 goals last year. Let's see what it does. You know, and steady 19 posts. And, um, yeah, I think he should get, you know, a look, a con some consideration he's done it before. So why not? Yeah, and that's that's one of the guys that I was kind of wondering about, like, trying to think about like, who, who's a good mix of play style? And we've kind of talked about this throughout the week regarding, you know, who's playing center, who's matched up with Patrick Kane, you know, Roman Cancer, all that stuff. I do wonder if like, you know, let's say for arguments, say, you have Frank Nazar with Patrick Kane. I wouldn't think a Ryan Green style player with those guys wouldn't be a bad idea. Like the, the hockey IQ, the way he thinks the game is thought of pretty highly by the coaching staff. Patrick Kane has always been a guy that has had that, you know, that,

that trait. And then you pair him with a guy who's got speed at both ends of the ice, responsibility at both ends of the ice and a scoring touch in Frank Nazar, you get a little bit of defensive coverage with that group. You get a little bit of offensive creativity and you get, I would think three guys that could probably see the flow of the game pretty well. I don't know, I, I, I still feel like Tyler Bertuzzi is a guy that you need to have in your top six just because of the production he had last year. He had some chemistry with Frank Nazar as well. At times last year, like, I don't know, I'm, it's, it's definitely a, a group that is, that can be pretty fluid. Yeah. And again, you got to also take into consideration that ultimately it's Jeff Blaschel, who makes these decisions. And we know how Jeff Blaschel feels about Tyler Bertuzzi. He might as will be his adopted son for the love and admiration that those two share. And why not Tyler Bertuzzi has been a terrific hockey player when he's played under Jeff Blaschel. 30 goals last

year led the team in goals last year. He had his two career years have come when he's been with, with Blaschel is, I forget what year it was like 18, 19 or 1920. It was one of those two seasons with Detroit, with Blaschel. And then last season was another career year for him. After a really inconsistent first year with the Black Hawks. For sure. And so I think Bertuzzi is in the top six. So that gives us only one spot left. I think, you know, going back to like the pairings. You know, and all we spent so much time yesterday talking about Scott Powers saying he's heard whispers that Roman cancer off is going to get a look at top center and playing with Kane. That's fine. Give him a look and camp. That's what training camp is for. I think ultimately because Nazar and Kane have been working out together all this summer. They worked out together all last summer. They've got some experienced granted, not game experience together. But they've,

they've spent a lot of time on the ice together working, you know, different, familiar with each other. Yeah. Why not put that as your pair for line one. Yeah. And then now you look at the other wing and you're like, well, Tyler Bertuzzi is a guy that that line could use. And Frank Nazar and Tyler Bertuzzi played really well together when they were together last season. So now you got Nazar who's got some chemistry with Kane. He's got proven NHL game time chemistry with Tyler Bertuzzi. To me, that makes too much sense. Like that feels like a safe line for opening night. Now granted, you can change it as quickly as the second shift of the game if you need to. But to me, that seems like a safe line of guys that have experienced playing with each other or least skating together. You have Nazar down the middle with the speed you have. Kane with his creativity. You know, he's still despite, you know, losing a half a step speed wise, he's still one of the best in zone entries in the entire league.

Yeah. And that's huge. This is what this team needs. He might not have the straight line speed he used to, but he is still a guy that can maneuver and shift and even after the the hip surgery, he still has that ability. And his hands are amazing. Yeah. He's not the fastest guy in the world, but he's still very agile. There's a difference between agility and speed and he uses it well on the ice. So having him out there with helping get the puck in the zone, you have a guy like Tyler Bertuzzi who's going to help you keep the puck in the zone by getting into the corner and winning those battles and then getting to the front of the net to where Nazar and Kane get a shot off. He's there either for deflection or for rebound or takes his favorite spot standing at the side of that and waits for that open tipping because everybody's paying attention to 88 with the puck. And he gets that puck right on his stick. Banks that offer him, you know, how many of those 33 goals he scored last year were scored that way. Almost all of that. A lot. Yeah. I think, I think Tyler Bertuzzi is leading goals from within five feet. Yeah. I think his entire goal total

was scored from less than 200 feet combined. Probably. I don't think he scored a goal from over six feet away from the net last year. He had one that was like a highlight goal. Didn't he have one that was like a spinorama from at least a few feet away. Yeah, that might have been that one. But yeah, that was like the one that 11 footer. Not a bomb. Yeah. So the middle three guys make sense to at least start off together. Now if you through a camp and you get through a preseason game and for whatever reason, it's not driving. Yeah. You've got time. But I, I, you know, we're talking a little bit of time. Yeah. It's a short training camp. But we're talking about training camp battles. So those are, that's the trio I start with day one. So now you've got cancer off in front of on that second line. Yeah. Um, I think our, I think our top six are identical because that's, that's who I had as my top line. If I were to do it, like you said, Blaschle and the staff, they're going to have their own things. But if it were me, I would start with

that. Nez arcane or to Z is the top line. And then I have. Frontel cancer of and table. Table makes the most sense for me right now as well. Um, you know, Frontel and cancer off. You want to give cancer off a look at center. You want to give front out. Look at center. You can change shows. Yeah. First man in the zone play center. Right. Like, you know, as, as he mentioned, as Blaschle said, he, you know, oh, I had that with, you know, Zeta Berg and, and that's two Hall of Famers. So it'll definitely work with two rookies. Yeah. So it's the same thing. Um, you know, why not? It's a Russian and a sweet. It's the same thing. Exactly. Same exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, so, to me, I table as much as I think Lardish, I don't know what to say, needs to be in the top six, but I think his skill set is a top six. It's a much more fun second line. Margas, front, del cancer off. Yeah. That's just too green for me. That's three basically three rookies. Yeah. That's maybe later in the season. You want to go crazy? Try that. Um, but there's a reason

I'm, I'm kind of excited that Nicolardus doesn't start to season the top six. We'll get to that in a minute. So I think table, and I know table, terrifying and not exactly top six guy anymore. As soon as Badaar shows up, yeah, you know, table, no, table, no, at least for those first few games, if you're going to put cancer off and you're going to put front bell together, two guys very, you know, zero in each other experience and 12 games of an ex experience, not a lot there. Table, all the experience in the world, he is defensively responsible. He has the vision in the hands to get those two guys the puck. Um, you don't have to worry about him. No, he's not going to steal shots away from those guys. He's going to, you know, Anton Frandel loves that one timer. He's going to get the one timer chances with table on the ice. So at least for those first few games, I'm not saying table, terrifying and needs to be in the top six every, every all 84 games. But I think those first few without Conor Badaar to just make some most sense because your other

options are Ryan Green. As we talked about smart player, but again, you know, with those two inexperienced guys, I don't want he played all year, last year in the NHL like, I don't want Ryan Green to be the most NHL experienced guy on my second line. No, though he probably will be on my third line. Yes. But, you know, I need a little more offensive creativeness on that line with what guys like cancer off and Frandel. And I think that's where table fits in well and Lardus, that would be fun, but not from day one. Yeah. Lardus, cancer off Frandel defensively, scares me a little bit. And then offensively, like they would, that would be a lot of fun to watch those guys work together. I think the, I think the one problem that you might run into is there's only one puck out there. And those three guys are goal scorers. So who's, you know, who's, who's

getting the quality shots, who's getting the looks, they all could share it, of course, but I think matching up a guy like Tara Vinein, who definitely is a distributor to guys like cancer off in Frandel, who cancer off led the cage on goals, like he's got that ability. Frandel's got a bomb of a shot. Like, I think that's a good matchup. And then if you go with that top six, your third line of Green Moore, Lardus, I really like that. Yeah, I think that's a little bit of everything across the board. So yeah, we're kind of lockstep on on what the top six probably might be going into or coming out of training camp, but it's going to be very interesting to see how Blaschle and the staff kind of put things together because it could be, it could be completely different. We could have Ryan DeNotto in the top six. Who knows? Probably not, given how Blaschle used them last year, but unless they bring back the little creatures. Yeah, there's a lot of opportunity on the table. All right, we're going to hit the break zone here real quick. We'll be back in two minutes. We

got to go through who's going to be the backup goalie? Who's going to play on the special teams units? Who are the final cuts? Who's in? Who's out and so much more on today's CHGO Black Cox podcast? So we've figured out who's going to be in the top six. Write it in stone. Problem solved. Print the playoff tickets. Now we're going to find out the competition for backup goalie. I'm going to preface this. I think we know our answer, but let's at least talk it out a little bit. Spencer Knight is the starter this year. That's no question about that. Arvitz-Sauderblum has been the backup the last three seasons. Drew Kameso is the third goalie in the organization as he has been for the last three seasons. Kameso got a two year contract extension this summer 875 K per year AAV.

The caveat of that two year deal is that the second year is a one way deal only, which means he would assume to be on the NHL roster not have that two way AHL NHL cap flexibility, which this year at the AHL level he makes $200,000 compared to $850,000 if he were to be in the NHL. Arvitz-Sauderblum is on the final year of his current contract at 2.75 million. I think the writing is on the wall. One way or another that this is the last go around of Arvitz-Sauderblum in Chicago. I think they're going to let him play in the NHL to start the year. And I don't want them to, but I think he's going to be the guy that is the backup. I think that's

what the organization is going to do. It sounds that way just based on some of the, you know, I know Scott Powers had kind of said that earlier in the off season and when it comes to, you know, having good team sources, he's one of the best here in the city. So I trust when he, you know, says something like that, it's from a trusted source that they ideally will start the season with Sauderblum and let Kamezo and Brezhinoi be one and two in Rockford. And then that means Adam Gayon's going to play start the season in Indy, which is fine. Let him be a number one down there. Someone did ask us, you know, would they carry three goalies? They might. There's no roster limit in the NHL. You could carry 12 goalies that you want. They've done it in the past. They do it a lot. Like later in the season. Yeah, when they have like three, you know, those weekends where they play three games in three days, they'll carry a third goal because you never know you might want, you probably want to swap out a backup for one of those games. Yeah. But, you know, if that's the case, I'd rather have Guyon in Indy just so he could be a

number one in play because he's the most rough. If he's going to be third in the NHL, he's going to play what? Every six or seven games. That's that's a waste. Yeah. So in a perfect world, you have an open competition. But again, shorter camp, only four preseason games. Yeah. But you let those two guys, you know, you give Spencer night what four periods out of those four games. And yeah, yeah. Play him the first period of one game and then maybe he plays all of the last game or something like that. Yeah. Two games to, you know, you can do the first game. You split them. I don't know how you figured it out. They'll probably give Guyon a period of a game. Yeah. And then Camizo and Sotar Bloom will maybe split a game where they'll each get a full game. Yeah. So it's going to come down to what happens in camp. I really don't know how you can judge a

goalie on camp like who scores on them the most. I mean, like it's it's a different beast. Yeah. In in practice. So but again, that's why guys like Jimmy Wade are paid a lot of money to figure these things out. I think I mean, it's I don't know what Drew Kamesh will improve and rock for it anymore. No, I he's he's been down there. He's played well. He's he's had his ups and downs down there. I think sending him down there just doesn't make sense at this point because he's a better gold tender than Arbor Sotar Bloom. I don't have any questions about that. He's a better gold tender. Arbor Sotar Bloom has been below average below replacement level. Yes. His entire career. Sotar Bloom's last three seasons. If you want to use a baseball term, these are his slash numbers. Save percentage goals against average and then the goals saved above expected.

Uh, three seasons ago. Eight eighty save percentage three. Oh, no, I'm sorry. Well, yeah, actually eight eighty save percentage. Uh, three eighty goals against that and a goal saved above expected rating of negative 18.23 really bad. So he gave up 18 more goals than an average goal he would. That's that's bad. Two seasons ago. We were like, Oh, he's turned a corner. A nine eight nine. Sorry, sorry, an eight ninety eight better save percentage. A three 18 goals against and a goal save above expected of 0.96 positive. So he made the saves you supposed to. He was league average. He was average. And then last season, the wheels fall off again and eight eighty save percentage. A 392 goals against really bad and a goal save above expected of negative 4.0. Yeah. Um, so when when the best you've been in your career is average, you're not good. Yeah.

And obviously the black ox they've they've had Drew Kamesh in the organization for a number of years. Like we've kind of just been waiting for him to get that opportunity. And his last three seasons in the AHL a 906 save percentage was a 265 goals against three seasons ago two seasons ago. A nine one a nine one one save percentage with a two 54 goals against average. And then last season was actually as worst statistically of the three in the AHL a 901 save percentage with the 308 goals against. But last season in his three games in the NHL one two of them. He had a nine 18 save percentage a two 31 goals against he had the shut out in Nashville. And then his goal saved above expected in three appearances last year was a 1.57. And so that's only because that's that's first game against Washington was a train wreck. Yes. It wasn't great. Well, and he bounced back like the next night very next night. Got to shut out Nashville. So yeah, I I I I saw the boom is who

is at this point. And and if you're going to be a team that wants to make the playoffs, you can't have 880 save percentage backup goalie out there every fourth or fifth game. Because you're going to lose too many points. Yeah. And if you lose a place differently when you're when you don't trust them. And if you missed a wild car spot by three points, you're going to know why it's because you gave Mr. 880 25 starts. Yeah. That's no. I mean, if if Kamezel, you give him and he struggles out of the gate, you could call solder boom back up and say, look, we tried. Yeah, he needs some more time. He's just not it's not working for him. Look at solder boom. He's playing well and he's figured out in the NHL. Let's bring him up. That's fine. People people I think people would accept that more than just starting with solder boom. And like, what happens if solder boom goes out there his first game and just gets shelved. Yeah. I mean, especially if

the noise will be loud, especially if Kamezel was the better the goalies in preseason. Yeah. Again, that's that's hard. That's still other than their performance in the preseason games. Like through training camp, it's really hard. Like you said, hard to kind of want to buy the first for us. But watching from the stands at practice, we're not really no like, I don't know what they're looking for in their goalie. Like, yeah, you could tell when he's, you know, uncomfortable in the crease or bad mechanics. But like the coaching staff is looking for very specific things that we probably aren't aware of or really can have the right eye for it. Sitting up at the in the fifth black Hawksite center presented by fifth third. So yeah, it'll be tough. But if you start the season with Kamezel and he struggles, then you can go back to solder boom. If you start with solder bloom and he's bad, it's just then he's done. Like you send the rock for it. It's over. And then what

if Kamezel's bad when he comes up, then you're really screwed. Right. Well, but if you start with solder bloom and you give him four or five starts and they're all bad and you miss the playoffs by two spots, you can two points. You're going to look at that and go, you should have started Kamezel from day one or yeah, at least at least something, try something different would have made more sense. Looking at it here. So solder bloom, let's say they do give Kamezel the backup job. He's got to go through waivers once he sent down from training camp. I don't think Arvid solder bloom at 2.75 million is a threat to be claimed. If somebody does, you say, oh, no. Yeah, right. Oh, man, need a lift to the airport. Um, Kamezel is waiver exempt. So that's another reason why I feel like the organization is probably just going to be like, well, sendrew down because we don't have to worry about potentially losing him and have losing a goalie quote unquote. Um, and a lot of people in the chat saying like, oh, trade them, trade them. For what? Yeah, I feel like there's, we just

were out of the numbers. No one's dying to get that on their team. There's got to be no. I can't imagine there's an NHL team that is like looking at the gold tending market and looking at like what's available and trying to upgrade at backup and think that's our answer. And we'll give up whatever asset or whatever to get it. You'd be lucky to, I think, to get future considerations for Arvid solder bloom. We've already got tons of those from all those other trades. Yeah. So I, so I feel like I'm a future consideration. I feel like they probably, if they were to get a trade them, it wouldn't be out of training camp. It would maybe be down the down the road in the season. Like, if he's, if he's okay as a backup and then Kamezel's in the AHL and he's at like a 920 sapercent or something, then maybe you say like, Hey, team XYZ or whatever, you got a gold tending injury. You want solder bloom. He's playing pretty good. Then you bring up Kamezel and everyone's happy. Or, you know, he's playing really well in the AHL and a team is just like,

hey, we're desperate for something like you could trade him that way. But again, like, it's just, it's easier said than done for a position that there's only so many operat spots open. There's only so many guys that can fill those spots. I don't know how many other NHL teams are looking at solder bloom is saying like, yeah, that's going to be better for us. So I don't know. And again, like by all accounts and any interactions we've had with him, super nice guy teammates like him. It works as a. Yeah. No doubt about that. He's just, it's not that he's, you know, we don't want to rag on him. It's just, you know, statistically, it's just, it's just not there. Numbers don't lie. Yeah. So I would give it a true Kamezel. That's, that's what I would do. I just feel like no matter unless solder bloom gives up six goals in like two periods of action in the preseason. And Kamezel has a shut out. Unless that happens, I really feel like we're going to start with night in solder bloom. And it might just be like, you know, waited out until Kamezel gets that spot.

But I just have a feeling that that's how it's going to start. The wild card race. If you want to be a part of it is going to be super tight. And every point matters. And putting out an 880 save percentage goalie every fourth or fifth game is not how you stay in those close battles. I can hear any argument from me. All right. Have we solved anything yet? I don't know. Maybe four of peace. We're trying. We're trying. We're going to be right back on the CHD Black Cocks podcast in two minutes. Gonna hit the break zone. We're going to go through special teams units. And then wrap up who the final cuts we think are going to be in training camp. And then we'll get into a little bit more of what Anton Frontel had to say some prospect comparables and maybe some other shenanigans on the CHD Black Cocks podcast today. Join us in two minutes. Sorry, I was getting distracted by a seal Pueg. Apparently playing in the Canadian baseball league.

I don't know the Toronto Maple Leafs. Oh, it's not hockey Toronto Maple Leafs. The Canadian baseball league has a Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team. How is that not? That sounds like copyright. Yeah, I was gonna say it sounds like there's a lawyer that needs to get involved there. That is interesting. Well, there you go Toronto Maple Leafs. Yeah, seal Pueg. But yeah, apparently, they're white and blue. Congratulations to Yassiel Pueg for hitting 24 home runs and studying a new new league record. He has added weight. Yeah. Anyways, this isn't a Canadian baseball league podcast. Not yet at least. This is the Blackhawks podcast. All right. The Blackhawks podcast. Powerplay units, Greg, who are you putting in the power play to start the year at a training camp

without counter-bredard? Well, obviously Patrick King. You know, Frank Nazar, Tyler Bertuzzi. You know, I don't know. Nazar might go to the second unit. Not to think about it. Bone Byarm is your quarterback. Patrick King is out there. Tyler Bertuzzi for net front. Yeah, you know what? I would then, I think I would put Nazar out there, kind of like the bumper roll. And then, call me crazy. I wouldn't nickel-air this out there. The rip that one timer from the left circle. Okay. Okay. And then, anybody else? You're missing two. At least on my list. Well, that's top. Top. Yeah. Did I get you got Bertuzzi, Kane, Byarm, Lardus, and Nazar. Yeah. Okay. So there's my five. All right. Second unit, you get Lebyshinoff running it from the point.

And the few struggles you can give it to Renzo. Sure. It's already his job to start the year. Frontels out there for sure. Okay. I probably have table on the second power play, just to kind of be that, you know, distributor. Maybe Ryan Denato for that front, net front roll. Okay. Or maybe it's done that before. Or maybe a Jordan Greenway, but his big body in front and take away the eyes of the bullies. Yeah. And cancer off, of course, we'll get out there as well. So you've got some options there. I think table cancer off front L are the go-to's. You just take your second line and put it on the power play. I mean, it's kind of what you're doing. And then you would, with Lebyshinoff out there. And then you could plug and play who you want to kind of be that net front guy. You've got Denato. Yeah. I think Greenway could do a good job of that and could, you know, he could put Ryan Green out there as well. He's, he's, you know, pretty good with the

hands and the passing down. Oh, yeah. Playing in that spot. Not necessarily, I wouldn't necessarily call Ryan Green like a net front guy, but in that area. Yeah. He's done it before. He's good in those tight spots getting pucks through. So it's nice that you actually have options. And you know, I want you to know that it comes back. You really got options. Yeah. Then just like with the top six, like everyone just kind of slots in a little bit more efficiently in those in those spots. Yeah. We have pretty much all the same guys for our groups. My top unit, I got Bertuzzi at the net front. I have Byram defending Kane on the right side. I have Nasar on the left and I got Roman Cancer of in the bumper roll because he was utilized there in the KHL on the Powerful Unit for Metalware. So I wonder if that translates. My second unit, I have Green, a net front, left and off defense. I have

Frontel on the right side to open up for one timers, utilize him there. I have Table in the bumper because he's he's done it before and again, again, like between your top unit and your bottom unit, you have a shooter in that role. You have a distributor in that role. But I think because on the other side of Table in that role, I would have Nick Lardis, two shooting options. I know they're both left shot guys, but I think you have two shooting options on the wings that Table can kind of facilitate from that role, from that bumper roll to get to the wings. I do wonder if maybe in all of Ramour sneaks his way in there, maybe as a net front guy. Like you said, Ryan Denatto has done it before, but that's how I would have the two Powerful units line up. Part of me wants to just load up like Frontel, Cancer off, Kane, like all on the same group, but I do feel like Frontel is probably going to be best used

on the right side. That's where Patrick Kane plays on the Powerplay. So I think you can spread out a little bit of that offense throughout across those two units that way. Yeah, it'll be nice to have two functioning units, two units that could actually put the puck in the net so you don't have to rely on the Conor Bredard top line to play a minute 55 of every Powerplay. And you don't have a second Powerplay unit with Nick Fileno, Ryan Denatto, and C.J.K.R. Yeah, you've got options here. And when Conor Bredard comes back, you're going to have even more options. It's going to create some competition to get down there on the Man Advantage, which is good. That's what you want. Yeah, moving to the penalty kill. This was a big positive last season for the Black Hawks, but they lost a lot of the guys that made it the top penalty kill unit, second penalty kill unit to end the year post trade deadline.

You lose Murphy Denatto, or not Denatto Dickinson, McCayev, Fileno at times. You lose those guys that were stalwarts on the PK. Mervy, Crabiae are gone. Crabiae too. Yep. But you did bring in a few guys that their thing is killing penalties. One of them, Cole Smith, another one, Jordan Greenway. Who do you have in that forward and defensive rotation for killing penalties? Well, I'm going to get like a core of like six forwards that will be my guys. And you can param up however you want to, but you mentioned Smith and Greenway. Greenway was tremendous killing penalties in the playoffs last year. Smith has played quite a bit shorthand in his career. Table Terivionin is a penalty killer in my world. He did a lot last year. He probably will be, if you're going to have a top PK unit, it'd probably be like him and Greenway. So there's three

of your guys there. You know, Denatto can kill penalties. I really think this is where Oliver Moore is going to get a chance to really like become the next Ilya McCayev type penalty killer. Like play that role. Yeah. Where he can use his speed to create some breakaway scores from shorthand of goals, but he also can use his speed to close gaps in the penalty in the defensive zone. I think Oliver Moore has a chance to become quickly and elite penalty killer and really find his niche. We've seen Frank Nazar kill penalties, but if Frank Nazar is going to be, you know, top line top power play. Yeah, you may want to limit when you use him there. I think Ryan Green can kill penalties as well. So and we don't know, we don't know guys like cancer off and front elk, it turned out to be reliable penalty killers. You don't necessarily want to, but

depending on who's in the box and, you know, you know, you may throw them out there for the last 20 seconds of a PK. Yeah, maybe you experiment in season with that a little bit. If there's a game where you got maybe a three goal lead or something, and you put those guys out there maybe for a defensive zone draw with like 11 seconds left. So when it's back to even strength, you've got those guys already on the ice stuff like that. Yeah, um, because like, at least for front elk, like that's kind of what he's expected to kind of develop. So he's got to get some reps to try and do it. But I think let's let him kind of ease in a little bit more to the league before throwing them out there. But I'm really looking forward to see what Oliver Moore can do on the PK. I think this is going to be that year where people are going to be like, that's why the Black Ox works. I'm excited about him. Yeah, I think it's over, overall, I think this is going to be a year where I, Oliver Moore is going to be that third line center, winger defensive guy with some speed,

like he's going to find out what his job is. We've been waiting to try to figure out what it is. He's going to be with the departure of Jason Dickinson and Ilya McHav he can develop into that type of player and, you know, have be a threat offensive. Yeah, be that two way guy that can and should score 20 goals here. We could. Yeah, I like that forward group. I have all the same guys. The idea or the thought of a potential Frank Nayser Oliver Moore penalty kill unit, like kind of fun. That would be a lot of speed. Kind of like that power kill thought process. Defensively, it's, it's, to me, it's interesting. Blastig and Kaiser are going to be there. Yes. Eankohl is going to kill penalties. The fourth guy of the rotation defensively is interesting to me because now you have all your offensive guys. Byron, Rinsal, Levchenov, who do you trust the most? I worry about overloading Byron with responsibilities.

He has done penalty kill before, but it's not his strong suit. But look, if he's going to be the number one, I mean, your number one defenseman should be a penalty kill it. Yeah, unless it's unless it's a guy that's like, oh, he just puts up 90 points offensively and we don't use him on the PK, but he's not that guy yet. Not yet. So do you put him out there? Do you give Levchenov? Levchenov had a little bit of run at the end of last season on the PK. Rinsal had a little bit of opportunity to do it. Do you give either of those guys like that fourth defenseman in the rotation spot? For me, I would probably go Rinsal just to have like just to give him an opportunity because he's not going to be on the power play. Just start. You give him a little bit of opportunity for some extra ice time. That would be my first. Yeah, I get you don't want to give Byron a ton of PK time because he is going to be playing number one minutes for the first time in his career. He's going to be playing number one power play minutes for the first time in his career. Yeah,

you don't want to burn him out, playing him 26 minutes a night because he's got to play three, four minutes of the PK. If you need to put him out there every once in a while to give guys a breather or if Cole is in the penalty box or you know, Kaiser's in the penalty box. So I think he just kind of, you know, Jeff Plash was going to rely on his instincts and his gut is feeling whoever is playing the best defensively will get those minutes. I have no problem with Artie Levishinoff getting some PK time this year because eventually he's going to need to be able to do it. Right. I like the fact that we saw more of his physicality come out as the season went on. And hopefully if he starts the season with that little bit of edge that we saw at flashes of that will help him there. But you have your three PK guys with with classic Kaiser and Cole set up. Definitely. So that fourth guy is just going to be who's ever playing the best at now. Ranzelle getting a look. As you said, the kind of give him is throw him a bone because he's not going to get a lot of power play time this year unless Levishinoff is really struggling.

So ideally, he's not going to get a lot of power play time this year. So yeah, but I think a guy like Alex Vlasik and Wyatt Kaiser better get ready to kill a lot of penalties. You know, they better get ready to get out of the bar just to yeah. Well, and that's something in the Hawks were okay. They were in middle of the league in penalty minutes. They they weren't as bad as it they were near the bottom for a lot of the league. But you got to remember they had that they had that Montreal the home opener. They took like 75 penalty minutes in that game. And then there was there was another game early in the season. Was it the Ottawa game at home where there was like they went crazy and they there was that shift at the very end of the game where everybody got game misconduct. Oh yeah. So they picked up like 50 penalty minutes as time expired. So that jacked up their average those two games like in the first eight games of the year. So while they like the stat said, oh, they're averaging 22 penalty minutes a game. They're they're completely undisciplined mess. That wasn't yeah, they were pretty much league average. So

they're not an undisciplined team. But you if they could be top half of the league as far as penalty minutes go as as as in few penalty minutes. Yeah, that will help. Yeah, a lot. You put you put yourself in a better spot by not having to rely on your PK. Even if it is as it was last year, the best in the league for a stretch of the year, the less time you have to use them the better. Last year they were 19th in the league as far as net penalties drawn versus taken minus two. They drew 233 penalties last year. They took 295. So actually not too bad. penalty minutes per game. Let's see here. So, you know, 17th in the league. So right in the middle, eight minutes and 43 seconds of penalty minutes per game. Not too bad. Like I think if to your point if they improve that a little bit by taking one fewer penalty per game, like that that makes a big difference. And we're going to see we're going to see

if it's if it's personnel, if it's schematics, that makes the difference because Jeff Blaschle came in last year at the beginning of the year and was just like regarding the penalty kill when he took over that unit in Tampa, like took him a month to figure it out. And then they were one of the best PK teams in the league while he was there. And that translated. Now you got a different personnel. We'll see how it translates this year to to the point about taking fewer penalties. Yes. When you look at the additions that were brought in with Byerman Kane in front, earlier all year in cancer off and the expected improvement of the of the team overall. They should or at least they better have the puck more this year. When you have the puck more, there's less opportunity to use to take penalties unless you put Andrew Scher out there to take and offensive zone penalties. So if you're defending less, you should be taking less penalties.

In theory, it's not necessarily going to be the case, but you know, you would think less time defending means less penalty. Yeah. Yeah. And that's and that's translates to penalties taken, translates to power play time shots on goal and all of that. You just have the puck more. It's it shifts that balance and that statistic. All right. Before we wrap up, final spots on the team. Seventh defenseman and then basically who are your 12th 13th 14th forwards. I think the easy the easy one. Seventh defenseman is going to be Kevin Quarchins. Yeah. I think that's pretty much he's got to pass through waivers. And unless he's completely terrible in training camp, he won't I don't think he would pass through waivers. So yeah. He'll be your seventh defenseman. Only two guys that I think would challenge him and they would have to

vastly outperform him to leapfrog him in for that final defensive spot would be Ethan Del Mastro who still needs a contract. Right. And I would throw Tage Harding into that conversation for two reasons. Size physicality, the style he plays is something that I think on the right side would be nice to have as far as just depth. And then again, he plays on the right side. Right. Rather than Del Mastro or Quarchinski who would have to play on their offside if you throw him into the rotation on the right. But that's an extreme stretch for a guy who's if Tage Harding is beating out Kevin Quarchinski for an H.O. spot. That's another problem. Things have gone bad. Yeah. That's that's that's not a good thing for Tage Harding. That's a really bad thing for Kevin Quarchinski. And it's time to cut bait at that point. I just wanted to throw him in there. No, no, yeah. Like he's and honestly for a guy, I was just like, I don't think they'll

ever use him. He's carved a nice spot for him in the organization. Three years ago about Louis Crabia. Yes. Exactly. And if if Jeff Blaschal squints real hard, he might think that is Louis Crabia out there. I mean, and we know Jeff Blaschal loved Louis Crabia. If Tage Harding was equal to Louis Crabia, that would be nice because Tage Harding is an ass kicker. Yeah. And Crabia for as effective and big as he was was not the most overly physical. Right. He would when he when he was forced in. And he needed to. He saw him defend Frank Naysar. But yeah, there were there are many nights we sat here on a post game show saying, it's okay, you know, for Blaschal and Crabia, it's okay to take the body. You don't just have to poke and hope every shift. Yes, you have a gigantic reach, but you're also a gigantic human. Put your body in the sun. Yeah. Yeah. Harding will do that. So I think that, yeah, you know, I could see maybe taking eight defensemen to start the year. Maybe you keep the master if you're worried

about Louis because he'll have the clear waivers too. If you're worried about losing him, maybe keep him. I don't think they have too much to worry about there. And again, if someone does claim him sucks, but it's not the end of the world, the rebuild isn't over, you know, isn't declared a disaster because you let Del Mastro go. Yeah, that's true. I think Del Mastro still has a shot to be like a third pairing NHL defense. I just don't know if it's on this team. Yeah, I don't know if it'll be in Chicago. And then how many forwards do they keep? You know, I think the fourth line will pretty much be Cole Smith, Ryan Denado and Jordan Greenway to start the year. To start the year, you know, a 13th forward probably land in the slagger. Just because that's who I have sending him the rock for it doesn't make a lot of sense to if you're not going to bring up Sasha Boaver to be your 13th forward. No, he plays. He needs to go to rock for endless Boaver just has an incredible where you're like, okay, I'm open to that. Yeah, sure, but

so slagger playing in rock for doesn't really do. I think slagger is who he is at this point. There's no more development. There's room for improvement, but I don't think there's more development to his game. Yeah, I'm not thinking he's going to be a late bloomer. That's going to be a 20 goal score. Right. So, you know, if you want to take two extra forwards to start the year on that road trip, I don't know who you would, you know, I mean, Monji Pony would be well, I keep forgetting that he's there. I literally forgot he was there again. So, yeah, Monji and Pony slagger started. If Monji and Pony's here, I think they find a way to get him on a new team at some point. Yeah, before the regular season starts. Yeah, I would think so too, because future considerations. Yeah, because he, I mean, it stinks because his his cap hit is so high. That's basically how he got to Chicago's in that oil was straight. They were helping him out with with cap situation, but yeah, I mean, I just what he brings to the table, other teams or

other players on this team do that. And some guys are just going to do it a little bit better. And, and I think kind of the reason that he was getting out of Edmonton was he wasn't going to go to Bakersfield. Right. So, I don't expect him to willingly go to Rockford. Who's who's out there that who's out there willfully tanking this year? Future future Vancouver, Kenuk, Andrew, Manji and Pony. Kenuk, you can go back to Calgary. He was there before. Yeah. Andrew, Manji, Pony screams Columbus Blue Jacket to me. Yeah. Why not? I would trade him for Marchenko. Sure. That's fair. Or the rights to Adam Fentilly. Yeah. Yeah. His, his RFA rights. One Italian for another. Yeah. I would say if they're going, if they go 14 forwards, seven offense men, that's your, that's a full 23 man roster. If they're not moving Manji Pony right away. But again, like the guys ahead of them,

in theory, Slager, Greenway, Smith, Ryan Denado, Tevo, like, I don't see him really leap-progging those guys to get much ice time unless there's injury or unless a guy like maybe Jordan Greenway is, I don't know, just lost the step or so. I just, I still just really can't imagine that he really breaks through into the lineup regularly, given the guys that are here. But that would be my, and then first call up for me is likely Sasha Bovair as far as like Top Guy and Rockford. But I don't think he would be the first guy that they take from Rockford because in, in any kind of situation, unless it was like you, you know, like we've seen with Lardis and Moore and Nazar recent years where it's like, oh, 15 points in 10 games, bring him up. Like, right. You don't need that. Like, unless he's doing that, he's probably going to be in Rockford. If there's like an injury, maybe they go to someone who's been there a little bit longer, who's not necessarily like, oh, we need their minutes for development. Maybe it's opportunity

for Sevwatt to come up. Like, there's something like that. But I would say Top Guy that's going to get cut from the team is probably Bovair. Probably. And I would think once the season starts and once counter-bredard gets back, I think landed slagger is going to be making that trip between Rockford and Chicago a lot this year. He'll be that guy that's like, he'll be the first call. We got a couple injuries. We need a guy to come up here and play nine minutes. It's not going to kill us. Give us slagger. Yeah. And if slagger comes up and sits in the press box for four games, no one's going to be, you know, it's not like you're, if Sasha Bovair comes up and sits in the press box for four games, people are going to be like, what are we doing here? If it's landing slagger, we're going to go, okay. Yeah. And I think slagger to from his perspective probably understands and accepts the spot he's in. Yeah. I mean, it's, you know, unfortunately for the Black House, but unfortunately for him, this team has got more talent on it now. Yeah. And unfortunately,

a guy like that is going to get pushed out of the picture when you have a more talented team. So, you know, but he's still got a lot to play for to stay in the NHL or to, you know, if he sees the writing on the lawns, it's okay. Probably not a long term picture here with the Black Hots. I need to do something to impress my next employer. Yeah. So, you know, putting some more efforts on tape. So, yeah. So, I mean, there's going to be, you know, the last few years, it's been, God, how are we going to fill out a lineup? And now it's going to be like, who do we, who's, who's got to sit? Some players you like aren't, aren't going to, you know, be in the lineup consistently or even be on the team. Yeah. But that's indicative of a good team. That's what where you want to get to. It's signs of progress. Yeah. I do want to hit this before the show is over. Scott Wheeler, top 145 prospects that are under 23 right now.

He had 11 guys on his list. I'm not going to say, we're not, we're not doing this to go through all who should be ranked where these were the 11 players. Counter-Bardard was in tier one, Anton Fondel was in tier three. Ardom Levchenov, Roman Cancer Off-Frank Nezar were in tier four, M in tier five were Samerenzel Nick Lardis, Xavier Villenev, Kevin Kurchinsky, Oliver Morte and Valkov Nestor So what was interesting and we will tackle this in overtime on today's show. So go to allseachshow.com to watch the rest of the show if you are watching us currently on one of the fast channels. What was interesting in this piece with Scott was that he added a little bit of comparisons to some of these players like bringing it back to the athletics top 150 NHL players list that was brought out last last yesterday rather. So at the top with counter-Bardard we'll start there.

He's in the one C level. So looking at the one C tier of yesterday's list, Scott brought up Alexander Barkov. He brought up Macklin, Selabrine and he brought up David Posternock. Bedard is not Barkov. He's not Selabrine as far as play style. What Scott was saying was Posternock levels of scoring ability for Bedard. David Posternock has been a guy that's been a 40 goal scorer before. He is if not crossed the threshold at least flirted with 100 points before in his career. What are your thoughts about he had 100 last year? What are your thoughts about Scott saying like David Posternock levels of scoring for counter-Bardard is very possible. I'd be thrilled. That would be great. 40 goals 100 points every season. Sign me up. Yeah, actually the last four seasons he's touched 100. Sign me up. 61 goals in 22-23 for David Posternock.

47-43 and then 29 last year. I mean if Bedard gets into that stratosphere then good things are going to happen. Yes. All right. The next one. Anton Frandel who was tier 3B compared to another big center with a big powerful shot. Tage Harding. Your thoughts. Tage Harding. Oh, you may catch Thompson. I was like, whoo. I'm John Frandel compared to Tage Harding. Sorry. Tage Thompson. Other Tage. Yes. The good Tage. Another guy is a 40 goal scorer. I mean listen if Anton Frandel becomes Tage Thompson and counter-Bardard is David Posternock. Kyle Davison is going to be catching a lot of receipts. Yeah. Sure. Sign me up for that. Thompson over the last four years. 47 goals. 94 points in 22-23. 29 goals in 56 points. Three seasons ago in 71 games. Then two seasons ago 44 goals. 72

points in 76 games last year. 81 points in 81 games. 40 goal scorer. That would be wonderful for Anton Frandel to get close to that type of offensive production. And then as we kind of mentioned earlier developing that two way game that he was kind of described as a player in his draft profile. The next level down was Artem Lefchenov and Roman Kansarov and Frank Nazar, but he didn't have a comparable for Nazar or any of the guys in level five. But level four A for Artem Lefchenov, he compared to Jacob Chikren. A guy who for reasons was out of his draft year a lot of raw athletic talent. Late Blumer offensively, he said Lefchenov could be a guy that's like that where he was drafted a second overall because of the raw athletic talent. And it's more or less the skillset and all those things are kind of coming along a little bit slower. Yeah,

Chikren was definitely a guy that was a lot of hype coming into the league and kind of underperform for a while. 3, 4, 5 season. It took him a while, but now you know, it lasts his last couple seasons have been starting your career in Arizona's tough. Yeah. You know, he's he's been fantastic, the last handful of seasons. So yeah, that makes sense. Hopefully the Black Hawks don't have to wait as long for that production or in in Chikren's case, it came with other teams, different teams when he finally figured it out. So, but I get what he's saying there. The style play is similar. And, you know, the longer development arc for him could be applied here, but hopefully it doesn't take that long. Chikren's first four seasons in the NHL, he started right out of the gate 18 years old. 20 points in 68 games, 14 points in 50 games as a 19 year old, 20 points in 53 games as a 20 year old,

26 points in 63 games as a 21 year old in the 19 20 season. And then that 2021 season, that was the goofy season. He played all 56 games, had 41 points. And then yeah, the last three years has really kind of figured it out. 41 points in 82 games with Ottawa in 23 24 20 goals, 47 points with Washington two seasons ago. And then last year 26 goals, 60 points in 80 games with Washington. If if Arte's on that trajectory, that would be great. I agree, though. I hope it's a little bit faster. Yeah, he can't be, he can't figure out when he turns 24 26 years old. Yeah, he needs to figure that out when he's like 23. Yeah. All right. And the last guy was Roman cancer off. He was also on the 4A level. Scott bringing up Nikolai Eelers and Kyle Conner. I'm a little more intrigued with the Kyle Conner comparison for the goal scoring. Sure. But if Roman cancer off

is turns out to be Nikolai Eelers, that's pretty darn good too. Oh, for sure. Yeah. But yeah, Kyle Conner is definitely the, the more dynamic of the two as far as goal scoring goals, but Nikolai Eelers, I mean, listen, he was the final piece of the puzzle and Carolina. So every, every season of Kyle Conner that he's had a full year in the league, he's been on a 30 goal pace or better, touching 47 goals in 20, in 21, 22, 41 goals two seasons ago in 24, 25. His first full year in the league was at the age of 21, 76 games, 31 goals, 57 points. I mean, yeah, cancer off. Right, right in that same, same age. If you get me, if that's what Roman cancer off produces from here on out, I mean, let's start planning some parades. If all these projections hit, it's going to be really fun. Yeah, it's probably not going to happen that way, but it's fun to think what if? Yeah. And Mark Lazarus put it out with this, with Scott, Scott Wheeler's work.

He said, like, I'm wondering for Blackhawks fans, how do you gauge this? Because yes, there's 11 players on this list and the future is looking bright and everything. But for some of these guys, is the ceiling of Jacob Chichran, are you okay with that with Artim Lefciinov as the number two overall pick? Are you cool with Tash Thompson with Anton Frandel being the number three overall pick? Yeah, I mean, listen, rather than maybe being a higher ceiling player. But if you have all those guys together, that's a really freaking good hockey team. Like if it's just Tash Thompson and nobody else, you're probably like, Oh, okay, but it's Tash Thompson and Kyle Connor and Jacob Chichran and David Puss. And Connor, but are yeah, and so it's the, I think the some of the parts would be exciting. Like if this team starts winning again, nobody's going to care where these guys were drafted. If they're all producing and they're all winning and they're making deep playoff

runs and they start contending for Stanley cups here in a few years, nobody's going to look back and said, Well, you shouldn't have drafted him too. It's all about the overall results. And I think if those guys hit those projections and you get all that on the same team, it sounds, it works. Sounds like a good fun team to watch. It would work. Hopefully as soon as this season, we are talking about it. Okay, that'll do it for today's show. Thank you for tuning in. We are back tomorrow. Normal time at 3 p.m. We're probably going to do the same setup. Chloe will be from home as she continues to recover. Greg and I will be here to close out the week. Tomorrow we will dive into Anton Frontel's comments about having playoff expectations this year. Add it to the list of players who have said that publicly and some other fun stuff. It'll be Friday. It'll be fun. Thank you

for tuning in. On your way out, hit that like button, hit that subscribe button. If you're listening on the podcast, we thank you. We appreciate it. A five star review would be great. Even if you want to roast us, that's fine. As long as it's five stars, then we'll definitely read it and internalize the harsh things you have to say about us and it'll ruin our days. But at least we'll get a five star review. For Greg and Chloe, I'm Mario. Thank you for tuning in. We'll see you tomorrow. Give it 23 hours. Something will happen. I'm sure.
