His first apartment wasn’t much, but at twenty years old, having a place of his own mattered more than the worn floors, dark hallways, or cheap rent. Before long, though, the apartment developed some very strange habits.

Things he knew he had searched for would suddenly reappear in plain sight. Random buttons began turning up in his bedroom even though none were missing from his clothes. And there was something about the closet at night that he could never quite convince himself was only a shadow.

He lived with it long enough that, eventually, even the unexplained started to feel almost normal. Then someone else began spending time at the apartment—someone who knew nothing about any of it.

And once she started noticing things too, it became much harder to believe the apartment’s little mysteries were accidents.
