What to Do Before Taking a Long Break from Work

About this episode

Taking an extended break from work requires preparation. In this episode, I share three things to do before stepping away: notify your manager early, properly train your backup, and let the rest of the team know how accessible you'll be. Preparing beforehand makes the transition smoother for everyone. Welcome to the awarding talks podcast. I'm your host, Romani Talks. In this podcast, I'm helping you level up your five soft skills. Public speaking, storytelling, social dynamics, emotional intelligence, creativity, five soft skills for your changing your life forever, skyrocket your confidence along the way. In today's episode, I am going to be talking about what to do right before you're about to take a long break from work. You could probably take a long break because you have a kid. You are about to take maternity leave and you're worried. You rarely take sick days and here you are about to take a two month break. What do you do? I would say the first thing that you do is you notify people way ahead of time. You do not want to notify people at the last minute. You let your managers know early on. Then you want to train your backups. You want to get everything in writing. You train the backup. You schedule a KT session. Make sure they learn everything.

And then you get that document that you created for your backup and you CC the entire team. Just so you know that you did your due diligence. You can also say, listen, my phone number is available. Don't hit me up too many times. But if you need me for an emergency, it's fine. You can say stuff like that. From there, you want to not take too many breaks before you leave. You don't want to be taking a bunch of sick days right before you leave for two months. Instead, you want to perform. You want to do your best job. You want to market all of the hard work that you are doing. And then you say goodbye. And when you say goodbye, you truly say goodbye. You do your best to stay present in the break that you are currently heading towards. Maybe it's because you are trying to raise a kid. Maybe it's a sabbatical. It's you are grieving over someone that died recently.

Something you want to be fully alert during your break on whatever reason you took the break for. And that's it, my friend. There will be certain times in your career where you have to take a longer break. If you always take breaks, it feels easy. But if you're someone who rarely takes breaks, this is going to feel hard. So train your backups, get everything in writing and make sure that rest of the team knows that you are accessible. Thank you very much for joining me and I'll get you next time.
