What's the latest on the Red Wings GM search?

The NHL has a Zoom call meeting with all 32 general managers and head coaches today at one o'clock. The meeting was held in person last September in Detroit, but it was decided to do it online instead this year, easier for everyone involved. Who would be representing the Red Wings in the Zoom call if they don't have a general manager? I'm sure it's a horkoff, but no, let's, let's think of somebody that would make some sense. Ken Cal or old friend art, Reigner. Yeah. Maybe. Oh, I got a better idea. Maybe it should be somebody for the Tigers organization. Oh, yeah.

1:00Wow. I said that in just because that's what came yesterday and I couldn't wait to get your take on this knowing you'd be in today. That Jeff Greenberg is removing his name from consideration for the job of running the Detroit Red Wings. Thank you, Jeff. Reading here an account put together from, this is MLB trade rumors. Who wrote the story? Well, Cody Staben, Hagen Hatton, the athletic first, I believe. I believe that is correct. So the portal last month, the Greenberg was a candidate to switch sports. That move was believed because Greenberg has some hockey experience after getting some work in baseball for the pirates. And Greenberg not only did he play in high school, he played in college and played, worked a little bit professionally in hockey, but got some work in baseball. The pirates died in backs and Cubs got the job as assistant GM with the black hawks in 2022. Later, it says it's unknown how much Greenberg gave, how much thought Greenberg gave to switching back to hockey again per Evan Woodbury. Greenberg says he and Myers are ready. I mean, some was honored to be considered for the job, but it's committed to the Tigers.

2:04What do you make of this? Well, I think he decided he wanted to stay where he was. And I think he was being considered and probably thought, you know what? I'm better at baseball than I am at hockey. You know, the Tigers have a chance. The Red Wings, it's going to take a while. Stoney, maybe he's just like the Tigers, he couldn't hold on to the lead. Yeah, possibly, possibly correct. From a hockey perspective, I'm not doubting Jeff Greenberg's hockey acumen at all. I'm thrilled with this. I didn't want this to happen. It just would make them the laughing stock of the NHL if they're not already. I mean, we are nine days away from training camp. You know, I am one whose glass is typically half full, correct? And I don't mind admitting that. If they had gone this route, okay, it would have been certainly out of the box and maybe

3:09brought on by sheer lack of other quality candidates. But somebody was the first organization to hire an agent to become a GM, Pierre Lacquat in Colorado. Yep. And there have been a number since that have had success. Yes. And there's a few in the NHL right now that have gone the agent to GM route. No debt, no debt, Florida for one. Yep. And Montréal for another. And I, when this whole thing happened with Ives, I mean, my first suggestion was Pat Person, the high power agent, agents of Don't like it among others. But he probably makes so much money doing what he's doing now. I mean, but yeah, the agent, I mean, it worked in the NBA with the NICS. So the point I am making is I would only build a case of hope in that this guy, if it were had been Greenberg, that it's a heavily driven analytics approach that are applicable

4:10from sports, sport to sport and that it would be something cutting edge that worked for the Redwings. Let me state for the record, however, I think if I built that case, which I would hope, and I do a lot of hope, I keep hoping my back pocket, it would be a week case. Yeah, I mean, I'm not mad that he's not a candidate anymore. Let's just say that. I've heard that the leading candidate is Brent Peterson from the Florida Panthers. Now one of their guys is already going to be the general manager of the New Jersey Devils and he's a fascinating analytics guy. So that's why the devil's got him. So I think his name is Sammy Mata. Yeah, I mean, Carolina want to stand in the cup with basically an analytics guy. Yeah, the analytics thing to me is certainly worth exploring and certainly, but I think

5:11it's important that an analytics guy hires the right assistant GM. Yes. You need somebody in that room that just has hockey instincts, hockey knowledge, hockey sense, because analytics don't cover everything. So it would have to be a good, a good assistant. Like if you're going to do something that's extreme to one in one direction, you better balance it out in the other, right? Yeah. I mean, the guy from Carolina, I'm looking at his Wikipedia page now, Eric Tolsky, he started off working in nanotechnology, writing for the Philadelphia Flyers fan blog, Broad Street hockey. That's where he started and then he spoke at the Sloan sports analytics. The next thing you know, he becomes the general manager of the Carolina hurricanes. Yep. After he consulted with the national predators and they want to Stanley Cups. So yeah, there is an actually from Port Hurrah.

6:15I know he's a local guy, which is unfortunate, but it's still one of the more unbelievable stories. We are moving in now on two months. Yes. What did you say eight days to training camp? Training camp starts the 17th. So yeah, nine days. Nine days. Nine days. So training camp. By that time, it'll be two months since Steve Eisenbum was stepped down or was told to step down, whatever, however you want to call it. How can they not have somebody running the organization? Well, Horcoff probably is in charge right now, but you know what I mean. Yeah, exactly what you mean. And he is very highly regarded around the league. He's the, you know, he's just a general manager, but he's also the general manager of the Griffins. So he's put that team together with a lot of moves, you know, besides just farm hands. But and he's a former player. So he knows dealing with agents and things like that. So, but I know a lot of people want nothing to do with anybody internally.

7:17Well, there is a belief that, you know, that the pipeline is maybe run dry and it's time to go outside the quote red wing family, if you will. 8:21coach. So every time the showroom on TV, his facial expressions were, he didn't know what the hell was going on. And he's like like he was scared half the time, barely confused. I think maybe even the college game has passed him over too. Well, I don't know if his facial expressions when he was the head coach at Utah successfully for all those years were any different than they were. I'm not saying they were or weren't. I don't know that. I think we need to give him time. But he's not, he's not a yellow and screamer. No, he's never been one. And he's never been one for it to be in the limelight either. You also have to be acutely aware of what the cameras pick up in the five seconds they show him four times a quarter. It doesn't always represent what's going on. Now someone suggested yesterday, and I a reager actually mentioned this to me on Sunday,

9:25but suggested with a text yesterday when I worked with John that this has the makings of Monty Williams. And I think that's way, way, way, way, way too early to make that claim. It's one game. Okay. Well, there's there are similar. He had a lot to say about Bryce there too. Yeah. And some of that may or may not be true. I can't, the coaches aren't telling me that and they probably wouldn't even if it were true. But the conclusion of what he is now is different than what he can be. And how much he came could improve and the way they never happened. And the key word you use was can. Yeah. We don't know if it's going to happen. There's been, look, he, if Bryce underwood, but basically fails, he won't be the first, you know, five star quarterback to fail in college football. It happens. Yep. And there are some guys that get better as their careers go on.

10:27And, you know, it feels like it's got happened in hurry. For Bryce, but it can, it can get better. Yeah. It's like that. It's like that Jalen Duran conversations. It can Duran develop. He's still relatively young. Yeah. He can get better and Bryce can get better. But they're not, they can't be in the business of waiting too long. Yeah. They, if there's somebody that gives him a better chance to win, play that person. If, if Tommy Car is ready, if brain follower, Nicol Ocey is ready, play one of those guys instead. Yeah. But in the meantime, I would, I would argue that it's still probable that Bryce gives him the best chance to win. They just, I would, I would try and narrow the playbook, not everybody's in fan of that, but that's what I would try. I think he'll get a half at least on Saturday. And I, I just don't want to see people really booing. And if he starts off playing bad, the booze are going to be crazy. And then, you know, who knows what's the money when you bring in Tommy Car.
