WARNING: Everybody Is SLEEPING on Byrum Brown’s Arm | Auburn Podcast

About this episode

Everybody knows Byrum Brown can run the football. The question heading into Auburn vs Florida is whether the Gators are prepared for what happens if Brown starts beating them with his arm. There may be a lot more to this Auburn offense than people realize. Brown completed 74 percent of his passes against Baylor, and Auburn's wide receiver room still hasn't had a real opportunity to show everything it can do. The Tigers have playmakers on the outside, Brown has shown that he can deliver the football accurately, and Florida could be walking into Jordan Hare Stadium expecting an offense that is much easier to defend than it actually is. That's what makes this SEC opener so interesting. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I can't think everybody's sleeping all by our grounds are on them. I think he can throw the ball a lot better than most people are giving him credit. Or remember, he was 74% completion percentage against Baylor.

You know, I think he's a much better throw the ball. And the wide receiver room has not a got a chance to show what they can do, but they've got playmakers in there as well. I just think there's a lot that's unknown that they're not giving credit. They're going to find out hopefully after Saturday that this offense has a lot more playmakers than most people know. So yeah, the 3117, I mean, regardless of what you think about Auburn. And I hear what she was saying, like maybe a special team score. That's a change. Yeah, yeah, that pushes it there. But even that, man, have we seen a lot of that on a lot of special teams? Didn't they have didn't have a little part of time do it have to part of time for a touchdown last week? He did against Campbell to back to back part of returns for touchdowns. They kicked it to him and then he almost had a third one. So again, they've got the guys that can change the game in that way. In my mind, just don't kick it to him. Don't kick it to him. Listen, I kick kick that bit to the 10th row.

I don't care. Just don't kick it to him. He's very, very easy, very simple. Yeah. Or kick it high and make him feel kits. Something like that guy. Leaving kick it to him. Yeah. If he's doing it like that, just kick it, just kick it away from the kick it out of bounds. Yeah, I would much rather a shank to punt that went 30 yards off the side of his foot than you kick it to a dude that has a chance to house it. So yeah. But hopefully again, they're not putting a lot. So I mean, that's another way to make sure he doesn't impact the game. You just don't have to punt. You it's is going to end in touchdowns and field goals instead of punt. So are you going for it on fourth on in plus territory? Something like that. But that's the way to make sure that he doesn't impact the game in that way. We got another super chat before we get out of here. Chris says not on DJ's defense. Gonna make it hard for Florida's quarterback. That's the goal. Heat him up, man. Make him feel uncomfortable.

Make him have to get rid of the ball quickly and then rally and go tackle those guys in the space, man. Are your ad campaigns lighting up the dashboard? But not the pipeline. That's bullspend. Payday bars are just salty, crunchy peanuts and sweet caramel. Delicious. Payday. Paynut caramel bar. All right. Anybody got to final word before we get out of here tonight? No. Yeah, no, I'm still rolling with Auburn. And this one up you'll barely confident that they haven't played their best football yet. Now's the time to play it. So you got you got by Baylor. You got your powerful and you won. You got to know a lot. No way to win. Yes, that's it. Right. Find a way to win. Still got a lot of room to improve though. So that's not the best we're going to see of Auburn hopefully. And you know, this is a great great week to get better. Your SEC opener at home. If you're goalish, you got to want this game more. Didn't some are all your players have to want this game more. They've got to be like, look, we're not letting our coach go out like this.

He had this job. Guys, he had this job and walked away from it. And and and you know, Ali, I don't know. I still do think there's something. I don't think it was all games and shit. But there was something about goalish's face when they he said he said that we're friends. Like almost like he was shocked to hear that. There was the pause and it was like, you know, friends might be a stretch. I think that's where it was for me. It's like friends feels like like we're cool. Like I talk to them, but I don't. But friends. Yeah, I don't know if I would say friends. And that's what that felt like to me when hearing him say it was like, I don't know if I would say that. I don't know if I would agree with that because friend is a different thing for me. But okay, that's news. Yeah, yeah. He didn't disrespect some role at all. But, you know, I like that, I like that little bit of competitiveness. Yeah, we're gonna compete like. Yeah, yeah. Our friends, we trying to try to win. Yeah, I want him mad. I want some of our also mad.

He don't even want to shake goals. He's hand after the day. That's how I want him upset. I want that friendship to be ruined after Saturday. We are not friends anymore. We have a little friendship you was talking about. It's done. We're all asked. You know, Goldis talked about he has to a sickening level rewatch the two lane game when they lost to two lane when he was at South Florida. Yeah, made him want to throw up. Yeah, he's like, hey, like, I don't know, man. I just feel like this week it feels it's going to feel different for him. If you don't feel like different for nobody else in that building. Well, I expect him to be way more disciplined, way more locked in because like I said, with him his statements he made after the game and the post game conference about, you know, him being discussed with the slot we play. I mean, it's, you know, you need, I love since I love seeing as a head coach, that's going to lead up to them. Hope we have a great practice. We could practice this week and taking over to the game one side. So I'm expecting him to be more disciplined, more locked in and like I said,

pulling out of again, finding a way to win. Like I said, that barely game. It's not a home game. You're playing on the road. Decent team, Baylor's going to be finding a way to win. That's the biggest thing. I think we'll, that will come back and show again, but hopefully it'll be a more refined win versus being as sloppy as the game was. Yeah, game one stuff, King. You know, it's game three now. Do you look a lot more disciplined and a lot more efficient by week three? Yeah, there's a lot to talk about getting better week to week. At some point, you just are who you are going to be for the season. I just don't think Auburn is there quite yet, but this game could determine who they're going to be for the rest of the season. I ain't going to hold you here. You lose this one. That October schedule. I don't know if you looked at it, King, but on the road at Tennessee, at Georgia, at old home versus LSU. That's a lot. That's like us back in the old four, you know, old four seasons.

Once you know, playing LSU week three, that was our, you know, SEC opener. You know, once we beat them, you know, beaten them gave us a confidence moving forward to kind of be like, all right, well, you know, old 14. That's, you know, who else, who else is there? Who's going to be the, yeah, when they're getting here, who's going to be there? So just building that confidence up like that, they hopefully this will be a game for Auburn to kind of build that up and moving forward to the rest of the season. I think that could go for you, the team. Are your ad campaigns lighting up the dashboard, but not the pipeline? That's bullspin. And marketers are calling it out in dashboard confessions. My boss asked for results, so I opened my dashboard for the only positive sounding metric I had. Impressions. Cut the bullspin. See revenue? Not just reach. LinkedIn delivers the highest return on ad spend of major ad networks. Advertise on LinkedIn. Spend $250 on your first campaign and get a $25 cried at go to LinkedIn.com slash campaign turns the conditions apply. Bonjour, Compadre. It's the How do I negotiate so many great travel deals?

My greatest gadget. The price line app. It's got hotel deals, flight deals, rental car deals, all of those deals and a bundle deals, game day deals, concert trip deals, no one deals more deals than price line. Hold your horses. There's more. The app that you filter hotels by neighborhood, vibe, star level, and amenities like pools and spas and beach fronts. Wait, I'm not done. Stop cutting the ice line. To be honest with you, I think this this game's one of those games where there's a lot of unknowns for on the airside as well. So I said, I think, but I think we're going to the way we want in week one, gives me confidence in how I think we're going to be able to pull out a close game. Yeah, you know, I mean, you make you raise a good point. It didn't look super refined, but there is something to be said about just finding a way to win in a game like that. You're going to play games like that. Not every game. Right. That goes so much further than like you can like you can make up for being sloppy. Like I said, it's game one. It's the first game you play against another opponent. You expect a level of sloppiness.

That's just you might not expect it, but that's just the reality of the situation. It's the first game. You're going to be sloppy. But that fighting a way to win that characteristic last, you keep that and build that through the season along with cleaning up the mistakes and getting better every week. But like I said, fighting a way to win. That's one thing that that's a mindset. That's not necessarily a technique or a fix per se for the next game. Finding a way to win is a mindset and a belief. So I think that to me, I think that's going to just keep carrying over from week to week going forward. 29th thing you said, you said belief. Like that's it. Like when you get to that next moment, you have a thing to point back to as like guys we've been here before. We can do like you feel so like you talk about this all the time. Like about how these Georgia teams under Kirby smart, you never feel like if they're down that that's going to be game one over. Because it's like I've seen this team like drag themselves off the mat week after week after week. You now have an exam because these last two years, you have zero examples of that of Auburn actually finding ways to win these games.

But you got one week one now that you can say, hey listen, there's a difference between how we finish now and what we used to. Yeah, I would say 2019 LSU score more points than any team in the history of college football ever. Quarterback through for 60 touchdowns. The one game that it felt like sloppy enough that they might actually could have lost it was the Auburn game. That year it was a they just had to find a way to win. They just had to get out with the win. It was a rain kind of game. It was very sloppy on the field. Auburn was in it 2320 was the final score of that game. It was the closest game they played all year. And don't give me Bama versus LSU that year either. Because I get that that was a high scoring game that ultimately they won by three I think. And that one too. But you never got the sense that LSU was going to stop scoring in that game. They would just do right. They wanted offensively. That's not how that Auburn game felt. And so when you can find ways to win games like that, which I would not say that,

I mean that 2019 Auburn team won nine games. So they weren't world beaters, but they weren't scrubs either. And you're going to have to win games like that if you're going to be a good football team. So yeah, I mean, I hope that this isn't I don't I hope we don't have the level of anxiety coming down the fourth quarter that we have versus Baylor. I mean, because they had the ball with no time left in a chance to to win it. In the game. Yeah, yeah. So hopefully the ball is in your hands at the end of the game this time. It's in your house. You should control it. You should dictate the pace. You should dictate this game in every single aspect. You know, these defenses, I think because of the losing records get slept on a lot. Because when you play great defense, but you lose people for they don't see how good the defense really is. Yeah. They're going to and if you win enough games like that, then people start to recognize, well, you know, DJ Durkin is a he's a broil's finalist, Manish, and the running for best assistant in the country every single year.

His defense is played and they always have a star that arises every single year. Last year was Xavier Atkins. This year, I think it's it's a fellow lineback. I think it's Elijah Melinda's. Yeah, Melinda is. He's seeking missile out there, man. He's tough. You got two of them. So, you know, go go go let them the missiles off off the hook and and torpedo this the sport offense. I don't know, man, I I want to believe in Barbara Brown. And I think this is the game where I I'll become a believer. He plays a good game and keeps Auburn ahead of the chains and and minimizes the turnovers because that's something he's got turned around from that bill again. Three interceptors angle get it done against Florida. And this will be his this will be his first kind of SEC on SEC game too. So it's um and you know, and you know, like and it's I know he's they won a lot of games this half-floor and they play certain teams, but come in and Jordan Hare.

Is it a night game? Yeah. They're like games. It's a night game. Yes. You know how they you know how it gets it gets real it gets real rowdy in there, Mike. The big lights and the noise and the crowd, man, it can be overwhelming. So I know it's you know, he's on our own team, but he's got to make sure he keeps, you know, he understands and and and kind of keeps calm too. It's going to be a lot to um you know, a lot to take in for him, especially with this kind of rivalry. So, but I think he hopefully uses it for good and puts it on the field and plays a good game. But it's a definitely a different definitely a different experience for him to experience coming out. I say run out of that tunnel with that smoke, man. It's definitely no better feeling than doing that Jordan. They do. All right. Don't see any more superchess out here. So we're going to slide up out of here. King, thank you so much for joining us tonight, man. If people want to keep up with whatever you got going on, which is a ton of stuff, you're you're you're regularly. You see them now.
