WARNING: Auburn Might Be Better Than You Think | Byrum Brown Leads Improved Offense | Auburn Football Podcast

About this episode

Was Auburn football underrated after the Baylor game? Auburn's 43 to 8 win over Southern Miss should at least force another look at some of the assumptions made about this team after Week 1. Auburn didn't play its best football against Baylor, but still found a way to win. Then the Tigers came home and handled an opponent they were supposed to beat. That's exactly what needed to happen. Auburn rushed for more than 300 yards against Southern Miss and showed significant improvement along the offensive line. Nearly every Auburn running back who received meaningful carries averaged more than six yards per attempt. Omar Mabson II had a big night, Bryson Washington got opportunities and Tae Meadows flashed when his number was called. This was the physical rushing attack Auburn talked about building all offseason. The performance also gave Auburn more answers along the offensive line. The interior looked better, the Tigers were more physical at the line of scrimmage and Auburn left the game with more confidence about its ability to run the football than it had after Baylor. You'll find anywhere. These like I apologize to your fan base for being so wrong. And I was like, man, this is an early game. You know what I mean?

It's still early game. Y'all got time. You know, I have time. It was like the only 17 points. I was like, man, y'all doing some good things. Yeager, you never know you come out this half. I was like, yeah, brother. It's not quite what you predicted on this one. But yeah, it's what you're supposed to do against this level of competition. Because here's the thing, he was confident because he was covering a team that was confident. And that team felt like they could come in and compete with Auburn. Yeah. Little did they know that it's not a factual thing. You could not. I think. And I will say this again, I think people are underrating how much better Baylor is this year. They assigned how poorly that outcome looked for Auburn to, oh, Auburn's not any good. As opposed to Baylor's might actually be better than we thought they were. And maybe Auburn's a little bit better than they looked in that game.

Now again, I'm not making any grand assessments for what Auburn's record is going to be the rest of this season. I just don't I think the overreaction to the Baylor game caused people to somehow think Auburn was going, not just Southern miswriters. I'm talking about people in our comment section who were coming in here saying, they're going to I have a sneaking feeling Auburn's going to struggle in this game. And you know, this is going to look like a, you know, a one score game going into the fourth quarter. And I don't think, you know, Kyle comes on here and he's like, if Auburn's up three or four scores, you got to get bottom brown out of there and people are scoffing at this. What do you mean three or four scores? There's no way Auburn's going to be up three or four scores in this game. And all of the, I hope I'm wrong crowd. That's out there like, I think Auburn's going to struggle in this game. But I hope I'm wrong. All of those people look silly today. Yeah. And hold on one more thing Mike, because I'm going to get on these people for you. Everybody who in this first game told Mike he was absolutely insane for picking Auburn to beat

the brakes off a Baylor and has been in our comment section for a full week trying to say, Mike G, you're crazy. And I don't know how you can say that after what we just saw that they're going to come out here and beat Southern Miss. None of those people have showed up to say, Mike, you were right about Southern Miss. Every game day you show up for your team. Now it's your time. This episode is brought to you by State Farm. No two football players are exactly alike and the same is true off the field. That's why State Farm gifts to know you so they can help personalize coverage for your life and budget. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. Yeah, they did beat the brakes off. They're not going to show up and say that but they're going to hold you accountable for the first game. It's crazy. Be fair. That's all I'm asking you to do. Here's the thing though, I want people to really understand that when you leave your replies, I don't read them. I read every one of them. Scream into the void. I do not read your replies when you're talking crazy. I don't. You know, because it's really easy. Have you ever started reading something, watching something, watching a video on TikTok or something?

And you already know what direction it's going. So it's either swipe or block or like, yeah, I don't see. I don't need to see any more of this. That's how I am reading comments now. We've been doing this long enough. Yeah, I'll read the first three words and be like, I'm not reading any more of that. I read every word. Yeah, some of them I don't reply to. But some of them I'm just like, okay, you're not even being fair. I'm about reading more of that. And the reason is because you don't we've been doing this long enough to know what direction something is going before I finish. You know when people want to have a genuine discussion and when they just want to yell at you. Now, if you want to just yell at somebody, there are other, the the rage room sponsors us. Don't break something. Go scream at a wall in the rage room. Yeah, that costs that costs of money. Like people just like it's free to just scream into the void, Mike. Yeah, like, like, so here's here's my thing.

Auburn won though. They beat Baylor. But they know it only matters that you told them they were going to blow them out. That doesn't matter. They want you have to be right and Auburn won in order for them to be happy. And they could have won that game by more than a point could have for sure. Right. When you're projecting things, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. My point was that Auburn is still a better team than Baylor. That's it. And think about this. Auburn had to play almost at their worst. For that to be a one point and they still won. Baylor had to play better and Auburn had to play worse than they still won. So it's just crazy to me, right? Like the 30 38 points I gave Auburn last year. And that same crowd was just like, you think they're going to score 38? Yes, I think they're going to score 38. Now what they do and what they're capable of is are two different things.

And I usually lean what I think they're capable of. So in this game, I thought Southern, you know, Auburn was capable of close to covering that 52 and a half, almost by themselves. And they and they worried they didn't, but they should have though. But they should have though. They have points taking off the board. Yeah, the opportunities were there. So it just, you know, that's the thing. If you come I will concede if the opportunities aren't there. Every game day, you show up for your team. Now it's your time. Call us footballers back. So Hilton called to me the superstition concierge to make your fan rituals a reality. Need a room to match your lucky number? We got you. Want to make sure our team doesn't wash your lucky Jersey? Oh, that smells lucky. Hilton's unmatched hospitality can keep up with any superstition. Even a marching bandwick up call it 555 and 55 seconds. Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton for the stay. If the opportunities aren't there, okay, it is what it is. I don't lose sleep over predictions that don't hit. I just don't, right? Because nobody gets it right 100% of the time. Most of my blustering about Baylor stems from the fact that I highly dislike Baylor fans period. I dislike the school. I dislike your fans. Yeah, I will talk, talk, talk. I'll be wrong. And then I will talk in their face more. I don't care. I dislike them that much. But we, that game's in the

books. Auburn won that game. Auburn is a two and no football team. Caesar jumps in here. You were on the post. You were on the call for the post game, Caesar. We were just talking about the run game and what the run game was. Everybody running back just about to touch the ball average over six yards per carry for Auburn. Was it run game? What you expected it versus, I mean, again, we were promised that they were going to run the piss out of the football. Did they run the piss out of it for you? Against Southern Miss, yeah. Like again, I don't know how you argue against that when the team rushes for over 300 yards on the ground and could have done and would have done more if, if again, points weren't taken off the board from phantom holding calls. Like you would have rushed from nearly 400 yards if you'd had that in your bag. Auburn did exactly what they were supposed to do. The only criticisms that I think would have merit is if you don't do it. Auburn did exactly what they were supposed to do. They were physical up and in the front. They addressed

some of the issues in the interior online. The online looked better. So it's they left this game with more questions answered than they had coming into it as it pertains to the line of scrimmage and running the football. We got to see more guys get opportunities to get carries. O'Mar maps in eight. He had a good game. It was good to see Bryson Washington get some carries. And Tay Meadows looked good for the few carries that he got. Being able to see these guys, we talked about how deep this room is. The fact that these guys got adequate carries in a game that we were clamoring that they would. It's to me as a win and is what you're supposed to do against the team that is inferior in terms of talent and who you're supposed to beat. Auburn checked all the boxes. Nothing really to see here. We move on. Let's let's talk about let's talk about bottom brown. She's like it is Byron Brown the cube. Did he look more of the QB that we expected

in this one? I mean, I think you said something to me during the game that gave me pause. People like to make a big deal about Byron's a wind up. But when he lifts it, go that thing flies. Yeah. I mean, you can go to see how ugly it look. I'm a for those that don't know, I'm a battle rat fan. I like to watch battle rap stuff. And one of the bars that I love from a rapper called JC who's out there. People like to criticize the form when the shots perfect. It's like you can talk all you want to about that wind up. But when he let that thing go, it's getting where it's supposed to go. And it gets there in a hurry. So yeah, everything before that, all you loop big, one, okay, I you better be there on time. I said this yesterday. Two games into the season last year after Baylor, we were saying Auburn and half to throw. And they didn't. Then came South

Alabama. And we're like, can Auburn throw? Because we struggled in that game. Right. If you recall, I don't think we're having those types of questions about the passing attack, right? If your issue is his form, then I think you're in a much better place this year than you were in any point last year with the passing attack. No, no, back to him when I say this because he's a cool young man. But there were people who were trying to who are still, I think, a little bit comparing Biber and Brown to Robbie Astrid. I just I don't know. Stop talking about football. Like I just don't know what to tell you if you compare those two. Where are these comparisons happening? I've seen it. I've seen it, Mike. It's it's it's I've seen it in comments. And it's all those two things are not the same. Yeah, it's I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. That's not that's I'm not being disrespectful to Robbie when I say this or I don't want you. Similarities in a big

wind up and you know, a more of a picture style delivery. I get all of that stuff. But it's different when it comes off the hand. Wow. I just don't know how we heard him borrow. How do we get how do we get there with this with with with these comments? So it's it's it's it's silly. It's silly. I think that Byron's game is fundamentally different than Robbie's. It is. They're not they're not similar quarterbacks. It's such a terrible comparison. I I'm going to get myself in trouble. I would just challenge those people to show me what the actual similarities between the two quarterbacks are. Just I don't mean they have big wind ups. That's yeah. Yeah. I yeah. So I just I don't I don't see that. I think that Byron Brown is a really really good quarterback. You know, I think a lot of these guys had the potential to be good quarterbacks and look for this worse. His last

year. Where did Robbie go? Was it weight force? Mm-hmm. He went to I mean, he had I didn't think I'm nine or three. Yeah, that a good year left. It's a good year last year.
