1:00We're off and running on a glorious Saturday, and then there were eight down to the elite eight in the NCAA tournament. What a night it was last night, and it started in Washington, DC. We were all anticipating a great one between Duke and St. John's, and boy did we get it as Duke wins that game 80 to 75. We'll dive into that game, and of course, start to preview Duke Michigan, which will wrap up the elite eight weekend, but a big show in store for you. We will dive deep into all of these games. We will continue to get some best bets and we'll update you on the circuit college hoops challenge as the champ from last year, Paul Stone continues his lead against the field. And we will talk to Paul later on in this hour. If you're wondering when those picks are due, they're not due until later on this afternoon. I believe the deadline is 4 p.m.

And man, I know there was some complaining at times about this NCAA tournament. I'll raise my hand. I wanted a little more upsets early on. One and more of those dogs to bite, but dang, Thursday and Friday, absolutely delivered last night was fantastic from start to finish. But we got more games to dive into. So we got two games today, two games tomorrow. Let's jump right into it, getting you ready for the two games tonight in the elite eights. Let's dive into the biggest games of the day. We're going to go in a little bit reverse order here. We're going to start with the night game and work away to the early game. So the night game tonight, 849 Eastern tip out in San Jose.

3:09It'll be the top seed in the West region, Arizona and the two seed in the West region. Purdue right now as we look at the betting market here at circa the number sitting at six. The Arizona Wildcats fresh off of a dismantling of Arkansas. They are a six point favorite against the Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue on the other hand, boy, do they have to work hard to beat Texas getting a tip in in the final second to get that victory over the Arizona Wildcats. But the Boilermakers, they've been rolling since that loss on senior day. They go to the big 10 tournament. Yeah, obviously win that four games in four days. And here they are in the elite eight. But let's start with Arizona and their head coach Tommy Lloyd right now. It feels like Arizona a bit of a runaway freight train. However, Tommy Lloyd fully anticipating a challenge today as you would expect in his thoughts on his matchup against Purdue. You have to be concept based. I mean, I'm sure they're pretty good at hiding their calls. So there's no way you're going to

4:10be able to teach your team 25 play calls and have them go and execute it in a day. So yeah, I mean, you just you have to be, you know, you probably have to really hone in on what you've done well and try to break it down into concepts and how you guard that. And you go out. I mean, I think this time of year, I'm sure there'll be some adjustments made by both staffs, but you know, both teams are here for a reason because they're probably really good at doing what they do. So I think, you know, you're going to see two teams try to come out and assert their will on each other tomorrow. And I'm sure it's going to be a heck of a battle. Arkansas and Arizona, thinking back to Thursday night, I laid the points with Arizona. Just felt like you're not going to out Arizona, Arizona, if you're Arkansas. And as you look at what Arkansas is, they are a turn style when it comes to defense. Great offensively, Darius Cuff. I've said it for the past couple of months. My favorite player this year in college basketball, but doesn't really

5:16do so well defensively. Now you're getting a Purdue team that's going to make you work for everything. And I'm not saying athletically, Arizona isn't the superior team. They are, but Purdue, as you know, with that back court of Braden spith and Fletcher lawyer with that front court of Oscar Clough and trade Kaufman, Ren, they've got the size and they want to make you work for Arizona and Arkansas. We had 80 possessions in that game. We had two of the most uptempo teams in college basketball going head to head on Thursday. And that's not the case with Matt painter squad. They come into this game, averaging about 64 possessions per game. They're going to make you work. The Texas game, even though it was rather efficient 79 77, we only had 61 possessions in that game. So you look at the contrast of styles of what we saw on Thursday in San Jose. Game one comes down to the wire 61 total possessions game two up and down track me. So what happens today? Who can control the tempo in this game? But Matt painter, as he looks to the other side,

6:19as his teams moving on to the elite eight, taking on Arizona, he knows they've got a whole bunch of concerns. What do you look at the talent that's on that Arizona roster? Co-IP can break you down off the dribble. You can get to the rim. He's strong. He can score around the basket, but he also can pass the basketball, but just rare for somebody with that size and that kind of frame. And now Braden burries is just a killer. Like, you know, he's one of those guys you're shocked when he misses. You know, he's got that extra gear. It really, really helps him who he's playing alongside and Jalen Bradley. Like, because he's so good, he's so fast, and he can break you down and get in the pain, get to his pull up. But now he's got ranged to 25 feet. You know, he's a, you know, he's a special player. And like you got a kid, when you play a great team like this, we've played Michigan. He's a great team. You got to look at everybody like, like they're the number one player on the team. And that stems to be a problem at times, but both of those guys are special players. Does that Michigan win in the championship of the Big Ten tournament about

7:22a two weeks ago? Does that give you belief that Purdue can do it again? Or from what we've seen so far in this tournament is Arizona, just that talented. This will be a play in my circa college hoops card. We'll get to it later on in the show. The first game today will be Iowa versus Illinois. Iowa, let's call what it is. Iowa's this year's Cinderella. Yes, they're a power for program, but Ben McCollum and Bennett starts the two engines for Iowa when you look at what the head coach has done so far this year. And then Bennett starts being their lead guard. They're two D two guys. They were coaching and playing at Northwest Missouri State two years ago. They were at Drake a year ago. So if you're looking for Cinderella, it's Iowa. And boy has Ben McCollum shined in this NCAA tournament. How well he has coached right under would quite aware of what this Iowa team looks like. They did play once upon a time in January.

8:28Got a great opponent tomorrow. One that's obviously playing well, be to one seed. And getting here and in a higher seed, I think they're much better than their seed. Well coached, great point guard and a team that's gotten better since the first time we played them. So tremendous amount of respect for Bennett and what he's done. And then a team that has continued to just play great throughout the tournament. So we know, when you get to this point, you're going to play a high major team or a team that's played very, very good basketball. And you've got to play well to win. And we've got to continue to ourselves to build on what we did last night and take that to another level. Illinois, a team that is 3 and 0 against this spread so far in this tournament. Blue out pen, blue out VCU. And then in a grind was able to beat Houston 65 to 55 a game. That's all just 58

9:32possessions. The interesting thing about Illinois, you think about how prolific their offense is. And right now per Ken Pomas and number two, most efficient offense in college basketball, they're not a uptempo team. They only average about 65 and a half possessions per game. So this isn't going to be a track me. Now you could see two very efficient offenses. Iowa really makes you work. They are the slowest team remaining in the NCAA tournament. But as you think back to the games they had against Nebraska in the sweet 16, that was a total they got bulldozed down and it flew way over. We had 89 points in the first half between Iowa and Nebraska. Those two teams were shooting so, so well. And even back to the Florida game, rather efficient game, 73, 72. It did go under. I believe the closing total of 145 and a half, but very close to going over. And if things play out a little bit differently down the stretch, maybe that is an over game. But this is one that I anticipate to be much slower between Iowa and Illinois, even though both of

10:38these offense is right now playing at a very high level. Speaking of Ben McCollum, let's hear from the head coach of Iowa as he prepares to face Illinois for a second time this year. Just like anybody, they get more secure in who they are. Their role definition becomes a little bit better. You know, I think they're very similar to what they were. I think they just defined it a little bit and sharpened it. They still run a heavy ball screen team obviously trying to put you in predicaments with their mismatches, et cetera. You know, and then try to get you in rotation off of that and do a really good job of it. They obviously offensive rebound at an elite level. You know, they're very connected as a group just a really good basketball team. Illinois right now, a seven point favorite in this contest. We've seen a little bit of money coming on the under it opened at 138 and a half coming up bottom of the hour. If Illinois wins and the other three number ones pull it off, it'll be just a total of five. It reminded me as I watched it about 50 times last night of Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel Air when he grabbed the ball from Will and he threw the long court heave and he had that look of like, it's going to go in and then you saw it not any anywhere close to the basket. It's kind of how I felt with the Dylan Darling shot. Last night, he takes a crossover dribble, pulls up, I'm going to do it two games in a row. No, you're not. Just kind of whoo goes out of bounds rebound. And if you laid four and a half, by the way, the live line at halftime that I saw was four and a half. So if you had jumped in on Duke at halftime, you got an easy cover. But of course, full game, Duke gets to win 80 to 75. The game goes over much to my chagrin as that was my best bet in the circuit college hoops challenge as my best bets have been not great. So far, just one in four. So far in the contest, 21, 16 and one

16:52so far in the contest, but not getting the extra half point on those best bets. But let's get to that Duke game. And before we talk more about St. John's looking at what Duke did and more specifically what we saw from Caleb Foster, Duke would not have one last night without Caleb Foster. I cannot believe that Caleb Foster played. I thought it was gamesmanship. But then you heard the report from Tracy Wolfson early in the day. It got confirmed by other reporters that he's going to play. Okay, he's going to play. He's going to play a couple of minutes. And he didn't really do a ton in the first half. But then the second half, he was a difference maker or Duke. And John Shire, as you would imagine, got emotional on the court when talking to Tracy Wolfson postgame after the 80 75 win in the performance we saw from Caleb Foster. He could pose himself a little bit more and talked about it post game in the press conference. I was hoping we could get eight minutes from tonight. You know, eight to 10 minutes. Give Caden, you know, a couple of quick hits where he

17:57could again, knowing what their pressure was going to be like. He completely surpassed my expectations of what I expected what I was hoping for. And obviously you guys saw we needed every last shot, basket, poise. He was also the guy. He's the most experienced guy in these moments. So I thought his voice in the huddle the look he had was was completely determined to win. And I thought that really helped us, especially when we got down on the second half. The Duke gets to win 80 to 75. They were down 10 in the second half, late in the second half, outscored St. John's 35 to 20. You know, you look at the St. John's team and we'll talk more about Duke and Yukon as the show goes on. Of course, I do wonder if this Duke team did they survive their big scare. Now you could say they had a pretty darn big scare against the end of trailing by double digits in that second half. St. John's hit nine three pointers in the first half. This is a bad three point shooting team.

19:02They hit 13 threes in the game. I saw these stats on CBS last night. St. John's this year, 13 and 0 prior to last night when shooting 36% or better from three. St. John's also had 117 straight games when owning a double digit lead at any point in a game and both of those streaks. But came to a close Rick Patino on his squad's performance and the year for the red storm. We made some good plays in the zone. So we missed a foul line jump shot. We missed a wide open three. So I don't think that was as much as our defense. You know, our defense when we were up 10 up eight, we had no Rubin made a mistake. He made no block out. We had bully drives, bully drives, bully drives. So it was our defense that broke down. But just it wasn't so much not being at the right place. We just got bully to the basket and they do that to a lot of teams. That's why the number one ranked team in the country. We couldn't defend the bully drives.

20:06Rubin pray. It was the Rubin pray game and you can make an argument. Do we have seen more of Rubin pray? I mean, that hair, just first and foremost, spectacular. But he had four threes. He was on another planet last night, only played 13 minutes. Who am I to argue with a Hall of Fame coach in Rick Patino, but you nitpick it a little bit. Duke took every punch from St. John's and they find a way to win overcoming a double digit deficit winning 80 to 75. Later on in Washington, DC, Yukon jumps out to a massive lead and you're thinking, wow, here we go. This is an easy win. If you were in on Yukon in this spot, a 24 to six lead for Danny Hurley squad, but Tom Hizzo and the Spartans, they bounced back. They ended up taking the lead at one point in time in that second half. But Yukon holds on when 67 to 63.

21:08Terrace Reed was a monster yet again had 20 points down low and Alex Caravan. He's the veteran on this team. He's a multi-time champion. You don't get a ton of these players, even though on display in the elite eight, we will get Fletcher lawyer, Raiden Smith, great Kaufman, Ren, guys that started at Purdue, going to finish at Purdue, four-year players. Alex Caravan's that at Yukon and Danny Hurley knows just how important his senior leader is for him. He's a calming influence for me. I'm waiting for you to laugh. No, it's, you know, it's like having an associate head coach that is in the locker room that lives in the apartments that is in the dining, is in the weight room, is peer-pressuring his teammates to do actually. I mean, it's like, you know, it's like having a top assistant that's on your team and always around the players. He's that mature, was approach. And, you know, he's, I'm just glad that,

22:12you know, again, the decision to come back for this last year that, you know, he's been able to play as well. And, and, and, you know, his last kind of run has been, has been fun. And, uh, obviously he's improving his, his, his draft stack. And, uh, and he's established himself as, as the biggest winner and the most decorated player in Yukon history. And that's hard to do at a place like ours. The current run that Danny Hurley is on against the spread is, it's a, it's a heater that you wish you could have at some point in your life as a better. And he's now done it over the last four years. 16 and one, ATS. You can tell your friends, the only team to cover are the firm and paladins against the Yukon behemoth. And it was and give credit to Tennessee really strong performance. They turned the ball over like crazy though. But Joshua Jefferson post game, this was tough as the second best player in college basketball had to miss a second straight game and unfortunately the season closed because of. This is hard, you know, when he works so hard to get to a certain point and then something like last weekend happens, it's just, it's really unfortunate. And I just wish I could be out there with him, just fight with him one last time. How close were you to being able to go or was it this not going there?

So did the sweet 16 performance against Houston, albeit not the most aesthetically pleasing, maybe give you even more assurance that this Illinois team could do could do something special. Well, I'm taking it around by round day by day, me and me go, we don't want the ego to get too inflated this time of year. But yeah, I mean, that was a spectacular performance across the board. Illinois just really owned all three phases. I felt we're key in the game. They limited turnovers. They kept Houston off the charity start. I mean, the Cooper's only had two free throw attempts the entire game. And they blasted the glass. I really prevent a lot of those second and third chance opportunities in which the Cougs of, you know, respond positively to. So yeah, I mean, Illinois folks, I know they're full of euros,

27:24but those euros are more than just your average finesse euros. They can play, they can get down, they can get dirty, they can rock them, sock them robots, and they got a ton of personality. Look at David Mirkovic, the post game interview, and he has been unreal on this story. It's spectacular run only one step away from reaching the final four for the first time at 21 years. If that happens, I'm striking the quad. Will you run directly from champagne to Indianapolis? Yes. And look, I ain't going to have spinning wheels. I'm going to be like the road runner out there. If you didn't know about them, now you do comes from Northwest Missouri State, wins multiple national titles there, wins a game in the dance last year with Drake, and now he gets Iowa to the elite eight for the first time since 87. What do you make of this matchup tonight? We saw that back in January, Illinois was able to win 75, 69. We've seen a little bit of money come to the under started 138 and a half down to 137 and a half spread at seven. What do you expect to see tonight in Houston? I expect Illinois to get all to a fast start. Similar to that matchup in Iowa City, and I think Iowa is going to be chip, chip, chip, chip, chip it away at that lead. Often, and I think ultimately too many points, I like the Hawkeyes on the spread. I think Illinois will win in race Indianapolis and represent there in the final four, just too much size. You might say, well, Iowa, it was able to beat the best front court in college basketball on Florida, but as a different type of style as Florida, love to get up and down. I think Iowa is able to ramp

29:27up the frustration limiting the possessions, living in the half court, which they usually do. But Illinois, they would prefer that style. They can run, but they also can thrive in the half court setting. And I would too defensively, number 234 to affect a futile percentage defense over the last month. So they're not exactly shutting teams down though they've been an ultra-fishing offense. That size, Illinois, as long as they're hidden, you know, decent amount of threes, they hit 10 in that first matchup. I think they're just going to wear down Iowa in the interior for the Hawkeyes, because Bimicolum is an absolute genius. They're going to probably punch the right buttons at certain times and keep this one nascent snug as Billy Grafton like to say. So, yeah, again, I think Illinois is winning, but Iowa is covering. And if I had a lean, I would probably bet on the under, especially if Illinois's defense that we saw against Houston shows up tonight. Yeah, that's going to be the one side that I will have. 30:31plays. Let's get to the nightcap tonight Purdue and Arizona. Arizona has looked like an absolute machine throughout this tournament, honestly, throughout most of the year, but they're an uptempo team. Purdue wants to slow you down, wants to grind things out. We know they could shoot some threes. I think this is a fascinating matchup with Purdue. You you worry about the athleticism, but man, I think this game can be really slowed down. And if it's played to the tempo of Purdue, maybe Purdue is able to hang in this number. What do you make of this spot tonight? Arizona and Purdue. Yeah, I'm going to give you the key guy. So we're really going to come down. More or less two individuals, I feel for Purdue because you know, Brains, Smiths, go to do his thing. I think Fletcher Lawyer has had a silky smooth stroke here. The better part of the last like three, four weeks he'll arrive tonight. But it's about all the bigs. You need to ask your club to step up, show up and show out. You need TKR, Trey Kaufman, Ren, to have another spectacular game because the bigs of Arizona are intimidating and they just chop it down. You know, Mount Creevis is a guy

31:36beach on both ends of the floor. Awaka is a dirty worker. Also beach on both ends of the floor. Carchinkoff has been amazing this season, especially on defensive bases. Plugged a score of 10 to 15 points tonight. Purdue has got to win that battle inside. And I don't think they will. Look, I think Arizona's got the best starting five in the country. I have said that yes, the bullards may be able to slow it down. And it could frustrate Arizona at times. But they've seen some of those matchups and big 12 play and responded quite well to it. So I think the guard play is nearly equal in this game. Burys has been amazing as a score. And I can't believe his player prop on the way is just two and a half made three. So I'll take the over on that. I think he's going to splash at least three. Purdue has really struggled on their perimeter defense pretty much all year. I mean, defensively, they've been rather leaky all year. So Purdue is going to have to have arguably their best offensive game of the year. They are historically good. The best Kim Palm era offense of all time. I don't know. I had that honor earlier this season. But

32:40Purdue is now surpassed them. But I think the defensive issues will cramp their style. So give me Arizona. I had them in my bracket pool before the NCAA tournament began to reach Indianapolis to play the national title of my analytical bracket in a cut down the net. I am budget now. Illinois, impressive performance against Houston down there in in Houston 65 55 and Iowa continues to impress. So what are a couple of keys jumping out to you in this Iowa, Illinois game? Well, first of all, as you've probably pointed out, I mean, this is a rematch of a big 10 regular season game played in Iowa City. Illinois actually won that game 75 69 as a one and a half point road favorite in that game. Illinois led by 17 points with just over 11 minutes, minutes remaining. Iowa fought back, mostly without Bennett Sturts on the floor, but the Hawkeyes fought back got within four or multiple occasions. Couldn't get any closer. Again, Illinois wins that first meeting 75 69. So here we are. Both these teams kind of came into the tournament cold. Iowa entered having won only two of its previous nine games, but they've

40:08won a hotly contested games over Clemson and then of course, Florida. And then two days ago, over Nebraska to reach this point, the Hawkeyes are six and four as the betting underdog. This is the third straight game in which they'll be the betting underdog. Illinois, meanwhile, under Brad Underwood. They were four and five in the previous nine games entering the tournament. So kind of on the cold stretch as well, but three victories now, all by double digits by a total of 66 points in the tournament over Penn, VCU, and then the quiet impressive victory over the Houston Cougars. They're in Houston, not on their home floor, but on the home floor of the Houston Rockets, the Toyota Center a couple of nights ago, big time victory for the fighting Alana. So a big 10 rematch here in today's first game. Yeah, looking forward to it. Iowa, Illinois, we've seen some under money come in 137 and a half Purdue and Arizona speaking of big 10. There is still

41:11the possibility. Actually, no, there isn't Michigan State losing. So we will not get an all big 10 final four, but there's a possibility of three big 10 teams in the final four Purdue would have to pull the upset against Arizona. Arizona has looked exceptional so far through the NCAA tournament, very impressive performance in the sweet 16 against Arkansas. What interests me here, Paul is the contrasting styles between Purdue and Arizona. Arizona and Arkansas both wanted to get up and go and we saw 1098 final score. And this one Purdue wants to slow you down. They want to make you work a little bit here. So does that maybe lead to Purdue being a little bit more in this game than some people would expect? You know, I think it might to him, you know, first of all, to me, and this is not a great revelation on my part, but Arizona, Duke and Michigan. I was looking this morning at one book and all those three teams slightly below plus 300 to win the tournament.

42:11So pretty much all of those considered equal co favorites. This Arizona team, they're now on a 12 game losing streak since they lost a couple of games to Kansas and Texas Tech back in February. They've covered six third or last nine games and that includes that 1098 thrashing of Arkansas a couple of nights ago. I actually had the Razor backs plus the eight and a half there. So that was a disappointing outcome for myself and others. You know, you look at that Arizona front court and, you know, they're not only tall to him. These guys are big. They are wide bodies. They are physical, Pete, co-appeat, the true freshmen, just a phenomenal talent. One of many great true freshmen this year in college basketball. But I think Purdue with Oscar Cluff and company, they have the size to, you know, they're better equipped. I'm not saying they're going to be real successful, but they're better equipped to deal with Arizona's size than most people. I was really

43:14looking forward to a potential Arizona Texas matchup. I think Arizona would have eaten Texas alive, but that's not a game that we have. So it doesn't, doesn't matter at this point. Purdue, preseason number one, they're three and one against the spread this year as an underdog, and that includes that victory over Michigan in the big 10 conference championship game a couple of weeks ago when they beat Michigan. I think they beat him 80 to 72, maybe getting four to half points. So Purdue, I don't know. Some people might be sleeping on the ball or makers, but I think they have a puncher's chance today against Arizona. Yeah, I do too. And this will, this will be, I'm going to tip my hand a little bit to you, Paul, not that you need. You just need to take care of your own business. Purdue will be one of my bets. Man, we could get hurly against Duke in the elite eight. Duke had to withstand everything from St. John's 13, three is a double digit deficit. They over come at Paul. They outscore the St. John's red storm 35 to 20 to close out the game. Right now, five point favorite total 133 and a half, 134. What are some keys that you're looking at in the Yukon Duke matchup? Well, talking about Yukon. First of all, Tim, obviously, the Huskies failed to win either the regular season title or the conference tournament title there in the big East this year. Both those honors went to St. John's. But after last night, 67 63 victory over Michigan State is about a one and a half point favorite. The Huskies now 15 and two against the spread since 2023 and the NCAA tournament. Of course, that somewhat skewed. They were back to back titleists in both 2023 and 2024. Obviously,

45:22they were not only 12 and 0 straight up in those two tournament championships, but 12 and 0 against the spread. So that accounts for a lot of that 15 and two ATS record in the tournament in recent seasons. But still, Danny Hurley, maybe he's kind of the new Mr. March. This is a Yukon team that although maybe their biggest performance was not up to standard and not what Danny Hurley was was hoping for. You look at their performance back in the early part of the season. This is a Yukon team that beat a healthy BYU. They also beat Illinois, Kansas and Florida. All of those four games on either on a neutral side or on the road. So none of them on their home floor. And they beat all those teams straight up before December 10. So they've played a tough nine conference schedule. They beat some good people. What can you say about Duke? This is a team now they've got Caleb Foster and Patrick and Gangba back at some level maybe below 100% but still on the floor.

46:25Their victory over Michigan 68 63 in Washington DC back on February 21st, perhaps the most impressive single game performance of the year. So Duke's one of the teams that can win it all.
