Vietnam Patent strengthens Recce’s ASEAN strategy
About this episode
Recce Pharmaceuticals Ltd CEO James Graham talked with Proactive about the company’s strengthened intellectual property position in Southeast Asia following the grant of a Vietnamese patent covering its RECCE® 327 and RECCE® 529 synthetic anti-infective candidates.
The Family 4 patent, granted by the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam, provides protection until 2041 and represents the eighth patent secured by Recce Pharmaceuticals within this patent family. Graham explained that the patent covers the preparation and manufacture of the company’s compounds, as well as the use of R327 and R529 in the treatment of bacterial, viral and other infectious diseases.
Discussing the significance of the award, Graham said the patent was “very significant because it takes our market monopolies out to 2041”.
Graham also outlined why Vietnam is strategically important within the broader ASEAN market. He pointed to the prevalence of diabetes in the region, the associated incidence of diabetic foot ulcers and the high proportion of those ulcers that become infected. He also discussed antimicrobial resistance and the lack of an established standard of care in some regional markets.
Recce Pharmaceuticals is currently progressing two Phase 3 clinical programs, including a study in Indonesia and a study being conducted across Australian teaching hospitals. Graham said the Indonesian program is intended to support regional commercialisation, while the Australian study is being conducted to US Food and Drug Administration standards.
He also discussed the company’s licensing activities, including a term sheet with a Middle Eastern pharmaceutical company covering multiple countries, as well as the deployment of recently raised funds across clinical, regulatory and licensing work.
