मूर्खः पण्डितः

कस्मिंश्चित् ग्रामे शास्त्रग्रन्थादीन् पठितवान् कश्चन गर्वी पण्डितः आसीत् । सः स्वीयां प्रशंसां स्वयमेव सर्वत्र कुर्वन् भ्रमति स्म । कदाचित् कश्चन बुद्धिमान् जनः तं पण्डितं 'अन्यं ग्रामं गत्वा तत्रत्यान् पण्डितान् जयति चेत् भवतः‌ पाण्डित्यस्य मूल्यम् अत्रत्याः जनाः अवगच्छेयुः' इति अवदत् । पण्डितः ससन्तोषं यावत् सः पार्श्वस्थं ग्रामं प्राविशत् कश्चन अजपालः तेन दृष्टः । सम्भाषणावसरे पण्डितः गर्वी इति ज्ञातः अजपालेन सरलः प्रश्नः पृष्टः यत् पण्डितः उत्तरं दातुम् असामर्थः जातः । एतेन अपमानितः पण्डितः तस्मात् दिनात् आत्मप्रशंसां परित्यक्तवान् ।

In a certain village, there lived a proud scholar who had studied many sacred texts and scriptures. He wandered everywhere, praising himself and boasting of his knowledge. One day, a wise man suggested to him, "If you go to another village and defeat the scholars there, people here will truly understand the worth of your scholarship." Pleased with the idea, the scholar entered a nearby village, where he encountered a simple shepherd. During their interaction, the shepherd noticed the scholar's arrogance and asked him a straightforward question. The scholar, however, was unable to provide an answer. Humiliated by this incident, the scholar gave up his habit of self-praise from that day onwards.
