When Persia was invaded by the Islamic forces, three hundred families left their homeland and reached India by sea. Arriving at the coastal town of Sanjan, under the leadership of their chief priest, they requested the local king to grant them land for building a temple to consecrate fire, houses for residence, and fields for cultivation to sustain themselves. The king said: “I promise to fulfill all your requests. But in return, what will you give to this land?” Then the chief priest replied: “We shall blend into this society like sugar in milk”. From that time onward, for centuries, the Persians (Parsis) became completely integrated into Indian society.
