यथा चिन्तनं तथा फलम्

कस्यचन वृद्धस्य एकः पुत्रः अलसः अपरः च श्रमजीवी असीत् । मरणात् पूर्वमेव गृहक्षेत्रादीनां विभागं कृत्वा पुत्रौ आहूय यथाशक्ति बोधितवान् - छायायां चैव गन्तव्यम् आगन्तव्यमं तथैव च । मिष्टान्नं भक्षयेन्नित्यं ततो लक्ष्मीकृपा भवेत् ।। पित्रा बोधिता नीतिः एका एव । उभौ अपि पुत्रौ स्वमत्यनुगुणं तस्य अर्थम् अवगत्य तदनुगुणम् एव फलं प्राप्तवन्तौ । यः उत्तमं जीवनं करोति सः उत्तममेव फलं प्राप्नोति ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

An old man had two sons—one lazy, the other hardworking. Before his death, he divided his property and advised them: “Stay in the shade, come and go wisely, and eat sweet food daily—then fortune will favor you”. Both sons interpreted this teaching in their own way. The lazy son took it literally, seeking comfort and indulgence, while the hardworking son understood it as guidance for living a virtuous, diligent life. Each received results according to his understanding.
