कामनाहङ्कारयोः जयाय

कस्यचन परोपकारस्य साधकस्य अनुष्ठानक्रमं व्यवहारं च जनाः बहुधाः प्रशंसन्ति स्म । तस्य साधकस्य पार्श्वे सर्वदा जलपूर्णः कलशः, अग्निपूर्णा अङ्गारधानी च भवति स्म । तस्य कारणं यदा कश्चन भक्तः अपृच्छत् तदा साधकः अवदत् 'अहं मम कामनाः जले मज्जयितुम् इच्छामि । अहङ्कारश्च दग्धुम् इच्छामि । जलकलशस्य अग्नेः च दर्शनात् आत्मना करणीयस्य कार्यस्य स्मरणं भवति । दुर्गुणाः निवारणीयाः इत्येतत् कदापि विस्मृतं न भवेत्' इति ।

People greatly praised the conduct and practice of a certain devotee devoted to service. Beside him there was always a water-filled pot and a vessel of burning coals. When a follower asked the reason, the devotee replied: “I wish to drown my desires in water and burn my ego in fire. The sight of the water pot and the fire reminds me of the duties I must perform. One should never forget that vices must be removed.”
