चिरञ्जीविनः

अरण्यवासं कुर्वन्तं धर्मराजं चिरञ्जीवी इति विश्रुतः मार्कण्डेयमहर्षिः धर्मं बोधयन् आसीत् ।  'भवादृशः अन्यः चिरञ्जीवी अस्ति वा?’ इति पृष्टे महर्षिः इन्द्रद्युम्ननामकस्य राज्ञः वृत्तान्तं कथयति । सः दानशीलः धर्मपुरुषः राजर्षिः च आसीत् । तेन सहस्रं यज्ञाः कृताः । दानरूपेण प्रदत्तां गवां खुरन्यासैः भूमिः सरोवररूपेण परिणता जाता । बहूनां प्राणिनाम् आश्रयदाता अभवत् । 'राजा इन्द्रद्युम्नः मत्तः श्रेष्ठः । अस्माकं कीर्तिः भूलोके यावत् स्मर्यते तावत् वयं स्वर्गवासम् अनुभोक्तुं शक्नुमः' इति मार्कण्डेयमहर्षिः धर्मराजम् उद्बोधितवान् ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

During the exile in the forest, the immortal sage Markandeya was imparting the teachings of dharma to Dharmaraja. When asked, ‘Is there another immortal like you?’, the sage narrated the story of a king named Indradyumna. He was a charitable, righteous person and a royal sage. He performed a thousand yajnas. The land where cows were donated became a lake due to their hoof marks, providing refuge to many living beings. Markandeya Muni enlightened Dharmaraja, saying, ‘King Indradyumna is greater than me. As long as our fame is remembered in this world, we can experience the pleasures of heaven’.
