2004年，中国固体废弃物年产1.9亿吨，取代美国成为了全世界第一的垃圾生产大国。到了2012年，全国的生活垃圾总量已经增加到了2.39亿吨。 张劼颖从2006年就开始关注拾荒者话题。拾荒者和人们的生活息息相关，有需要时他们就会出现，却很少有人知道他们住在哪里，如何生活。 后来她的研究拓宽到垃圾与环境领域，想探讨的是垃圾从哪儿来，到哪儿去，垃圾与我们、与城市到底有什么关系。“我不是说每个人面对环保是没有责任的，或者我们是完全无能为力的。只是环保教育先触动我们的内疚，再激发我们的责任感，等回到日常生活之后发现其实很难做到，最后只能摆烂：算了算了，大不了大家一起死，以后跟地球一起爆炸吧。”
