गर्वः न उचितः

दम्भोद्भवः इति कश्चन राजा 'मत्सदृशः वीरः त्रिषु लोकेषु अपि नास्ति' इति भावयन् गर्वेण व्यवहरति स्म । कदाचित् कश्चन सज्जनः अवदत् 'गन्धमादनपर्वते उभौ तपोनिरतौ नरनारायणौ स्तः । तौ जेतुं कोऽपि न शक्नुयात्' इति । अथ कदाचित् गन्धमादनपर्वतम् अगच्छत् दम्भोद्भवः ताभ्यां सह युद्धं कर्तुम् । नरः कांश्चन दर्भान् अभिमन्त्र्य भूमौ अक्षिपत् । तदनन्तरक्षणे एव दम्भोद्भवस्य मुखं नासिका कर्णौ नेत्रे च दर्भाङ्कुरैः पूर्णानि । एतस्मात् भीतः दम्भोद्भावः नरं क्षमाम् अयाचत् । नरनारायणोः आशीर्वादं प्राप्य ततः प्रतिगतः दम्भोद्भवः अनन्तरकाले प्रजावत्सलः इति सत्कीर्तिं प्राप्तवान् ।

King Dambhodbhava, proud and boastful, believed that no warrior in the three worlds equaled him. A noble man told him: “On Mount Gandhamadana dwell the sages Nara and Narayana, whom none can defeat.” Dambhodbhava went there to challenge them. Nara, chanting mantras, cast blades of sacred grass upon the ground. Instantly, shoots sprouted and filled the king’s mouth, nose, ears, and eyes. Terrified, Dambhodbhava begged Nara for forgiveness. Receiving the blessings of Nara and Narayana, he returned, and in time became renowned as a compassionate ruler beloved by his people.
