ज्ञानम् अपारम्

स्वगुरोः अपारस्य ज्ञानस्य प्रशंसां कुर्वते शिष्याय गुरुः एवं बोधयति 'अलं प्रशंसया । मया प्राप्तम् अल्पमेव । यथा सागरः अपारः तथैव ज्ञानराशिः अपि अपारः । वयं महता श्रमेण यत् अध्ययनं कुर्याम तत् तु तावदेव भवेत्, सागरे दण्डस्य मज्जनात् यावत् सङ्गृह्येत । यत् ज्ञानं प्राप्तं तत् अधिकम् इति तु भ्रमः एव । प्राप्तव्यमस्ति अपारम् । ज्ञानसागरस्य अपारतां मनसि निधाय प्राप्तस्य मापनं करणीयम् अस्माभिः, न तु स्वयोग्यतां सामर्थ्यं वा मनसि निधाय' इति ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

When a disciple praised his Guru’s vast knowledge, the Guru explained: “Enough of praise. What I have gained is little. Just as the ocean is boundless, so too is the treasure of knowledge. Whatever we study with great effort is only as much as a stick dipped into the sea can gather. To think that what we know is great is mere illusion. Much more remains to be attained. We must measure our learning against the infinity of knowledge, not against our own ability or worth.”
