2012年，还在华为工作的杨涛来到非洲，参与一个手机钱包的升级开发项目。在非洲生活的头两年，杨涛被种种购物的不便影响着：商品的可选择性少，且价格极其昂贵，甚至很多商人把中国的劣质产品带到非洲高价出售。与此同时，他发现肯尼亚有超过68%的成年人都在使用移动支付，比中国的比例还高。2014年，他在肯尼亚创立了电商平台Kilimall，想要把一些性价比比较高的产品带到非洲，并为此自建了物流和支付系统。经过三年的发展，kilimall已经成为了东非地区的第二大电商，平台上入驻的商家有一半来自非洲本地。“我表弟当时刚刚中科院硕士毕业，大概一两个星期之后他就飞到了非洲，成为我们的第一个员工。他的父母内心是崩溃的。他的这个行为也载入了中科院的院史。中科院的院史说，近年来我院毕业生的选择呈现多样化趋势。”
