पालय कर्तव्यम्

बहुषु युद्धेषु शत्रुजनानां मारणं दृष्ट्वा कस्यचन राज्ञः मनः विषादग्रस्तं जातम् । सः कञ्चन संन्यासिनम् उपसर्प्य  'भवतः इव तपोमयं जीवनं स्यात् ममापि' इति अवदत् । तदा संन्यासी 'प्रजारक्षणं, युद्धम् इत्यादिकं तव कर्तव्यम् । तपसि प्रवृत्तिः, जनानां प्रबोधनम् इत्यादिकं मम कर्तव्यम् । सर्वेण अपि जनेन स्वस्य कर्तव्यपालनमात्रं चिन्तनीयम् । अन्येन आत्मनः तोलनं न युज्यते....’ इत्यादिभिः वचनैः राजानं बोधयति ।

A king, saddened after witnessing the killing of many enemies in battles, approached a renunciate and said, “I wish to live a life of penance like yours.” The renunciate replied, “Your duty is to protect your people and fight when necessary. My duty is penance and guiding others. Each person must think only of fulfilling his own duty. Comparing oneself with another is not proper.” With these words, the king was enlightened.
