उज्ज्वला स्वातन्त्र्यप्रीतिः

शङ्करशाहः गोण्डवंशीयः राष्ट्रप्रेमी राजा आसीत्, यः कवित्वेन अपि प्रसिद्धः । तेन रचितानि देशभक्तिपराणि गीतानि जनाः सदा गायन्ति स्म । जबलपुरप्रदेशे आङ्ग्लैः संस्थानाधिपाः भूस्वामिनः च जनाः पीडिताः आसन्, अतः आङ्ग्लशासनविषये असन्तोषः उत्पन्नः । शङ्करशाहः तैः सह सम्पर्कं कृत्वा सर्वत्र युगपत् शासनविरोधस्य योजनाम् अकरोत् । सभायां तस्य पुत्रः रघुनाथशाहः अपि भागं गृहीत्वा नवरात्रारम्भदिने सैनिकैः शासनविरोधः करणीयः इति निर्णयं कृतम् । किन्तु कश्चन भूस्वामी धनलोभेन एतां वार्ताम् आङ्ग्लान् प्रापितवान्, अतः योजना विफला जाता । शङ्करशाहः रघुनाथशाहः च कारागारे स्थापितौ । अन्ते आङ्ग्लैः तयोः शूलारोपणं कृतम्, येन स्वातन्त्र्यसमराग्निः इतोऽपि तेजोमयः जातः ।

Shankar Shah was a patriotic king from the Gond dynasty, also known for his poetry. His songs of freedom were sung by the people with great pride. In Jabalpur, British rule had caused suffering among landowners and local leaders, leading to widespread unrest. Shankar Shah connected with them and planned a simultaneous uprising against the British. His son, Raghunath Shah, also participated, and they decided to begin the revolt on the first day of Navaratri. However, a greedy landlord betrayed them to the British, and the plan failed. Both Shankar Shah and Raghunath Shah were imprisoned and eventually executed by impalement. Their sacrifice further ignited the flames of India’s freedom struggle.
