होलिका

होलिकापर्वणः पृष्ठभूमिकायाम् अस्ति काचित् कथा । होलिका हिरण्यकशिपोः भगिनी । अग्निः यथा न दहेत् तथा वरः प्राप्तः आसीत् होलिकया । अतः हिरण्यकशिपुः होलिकायाः साहाय्येन पुत्रः प्रह्लादः दग्धव्यः इति अचिन्तयत् । प्रह्लादेन सह सा अग्निं प्रविष्टवती । वरस्य नियमः आसीत् यत् एकाकितया प्रविष्टा ताम् अग्निः न दहति इति । अतः सा दग्धा जाता । विष्णोः अनुग्रहस्य कारणतः प्रह्लादः कामपि पीडाम् अप्राप्य हसन् अग्नितः बहिः आगतवान् । अयमेव प्रसङ्गः अद्य होलैकापर्वरूपेण आचर्यते ।

In the background of the Holika festival lies a story. Holika was the sister of Hiranyakashipu. She had received a boon that fire would not burn her. Hiranyakashipu, therefore, planned to burn his son Prahlāda with Holika’s help. She entered the fire carrying Prahlāda. But the boon had a condition: if she entered alone, the fire would not harm her. Since she carried Prahlāda, she was burned. By the grace of Lord Viṣṇu, Prahlāda came out smiling, unharmed. This very event is commemorated today as the festival of Holika.
