कर्तव्यनिष्ठा

कस्यचन कार्यस्य निमित्तं राज्यात् बहिः गतवतः शिवराजस्य प्रत्यागमने विलम्बः जातः । यतः सूर्यास्ततः सूर्योदयं यावत् दुर्गात् बहिः गमनम्, अन्तःप्रवेशः च निषिद्धः इति नियमः आसीत् अतः मुख्यप्रवेशद्वारं‌ पिहितम् आसीत् । संन्यासिनः वेषं धृत्वा प्रवेशद्वारस्य समीपं आगतः शिवराजः । अन्तःप्रवेशं निराकृतवान् द्वारपालकः । किञ्चित्कालानन्तरं शिवराजः संन्यासिवेषम् अपनीय स्वस्य निजरूपं दर्शितवान् । तथापि द्वारपालकेन द्वारोद्घाटनं नैव कृतम् । तस्य कर्तव्यनिष्ठां धैर्यञ्च दृष्ट्वा अग्रे तस्मै उपायनं दत्तवान् शिवराजः ।

Once, King Shivaji returned late from a journey outside the fort. By rule, entry and exit were forbidden between sunset and sunrise, so the main gate was closed. Disguised as a monk, Shivaji approached the gate, but the guard refused him entry. Later, Shivaji revealed his true identity, yet the guard still did not open the gate, firmly adhering to his duty. Impressed by the guard’s discipline and courage, Shivaji rewarded him with a gift.
