कतमः योग्यः ?

कस्यचित् देशस्य राज्ञः त्रयः पुत्राः आसन् । ते च युवकाः जाताः । एकदा राजा चिन्तामग्नः आसीत् यत् तस्य अनन्तरं कतमः पुत्रः राज्यपालनं कुर्यात् इति । कारणं ज्ञातवता मन्त्रिणा कश्चन उपायः सूचितः – पुत्राः यं कमपि जनं तोषयित्वा आगच्छन्तु । ते तत् कार्यं कथं सम्पादयन्ति इति आधारेण कतमः योग्यः इति निर्णायं कुर्मः' इति । तदनु राजा पुत्रान् आहूय मन्त्रिणा यदुक्तं तथैव अवदत् । ततः पुत्राः गतवन्तः । त्रयः अपि एकैकं प्रजाजनम् आत्मना सह राजसभाम् आनीतवन्तः । तर्हि राजा कस्मै राज्यं ददाति ? कः विजयी जातः ?

The king, seeking a successor among his three sons, devised a test based on the minister’s suggestion: each prince had to win over a citizen and present them in the royal court. The son who did so most effectively would prove his worthiness to rule. Each prince returned with a person, but the decisive factor lay in how they had won them over. The one who did so through genuine compassion, wisdom, and leadership—rather than mere persuasion or material offerings—was deemed the rightful heir. The king rewarded the prince who embodied true governance qualities, ensuring a prosperous future for the kingdom.
