सुयोग्यः पुत्रः

कदाचित् जलपूर्णं‌ घटं वहन्तीनां तिसृणां महिलानां पुत्राणां श्रेष्ठताविषये चर्चा आरब्धा । प्रथमायाः पुत्रः महाविद्वान् । द्वितीयायाः पुत्रः उत्तमः वणिक् । तृतीयायाः पुत्रः तु शास्त्रम् अधीत्य, विरामसमये अन्यान् शास्त्रग्रन्थान् अध्यापयति स्म । तावता राजधानीं गच्छन् प्रथमायाः पुत्रः ताः नमस्कृत्य अग्रे अगच्छत् । अनन्तरं द्वितीयायाः पुत्रः अपि ताः प्रणम्य वेगेन अधावत् । तावता तृतीयायाः पुत्रः आगत्य तासां हस्तात् अनुरोधपूर्वकं घटं स्वीकृत्य अग्रे प्रस्थितवान् । तदा उभे अपि तृतीयाम् अवदन् 'भवत्याः पुत्रः एव श्रेष्ठः । न केवलं भवत्याः, अपि तु आवयोः अपि भारम् ऊढवान्' इति । यः मात्रापित्रोः अन्येषां च कष्टस्य निवारणे सर्वदा अनवधानवान् भवेत् सः एव योग्यः पुत्रः ।

Three women carrying water pots discussed whose son was the greatest. The first’s son was a great scholar, the second’s an excellent merchant, and the third’s son studied scriptures and also taught others in his free time. As they traveled toward the capital, the scholar greeted them and went ahead; the merchant bowed and hurried past; but the third woman’s son respectfully took the pot from their hands and carried it forward. The other two then said: “Your son is truly the best—not only for you, but for us too, since he bore our burden.”
