“生物大灭绝的概念长期未引起关注，20世纪晚期得到重视以后，迅速成为科学热点，也成为了最有争议的科学问题。”在距今约2.52亿年的二叠纪-三叠纪之交，发生了地球历史上最大的一次生物灭绝事件，海洋中有超过90%的物种遭到了灭顶之灾。对这次灭绝之谜有着浓厚兴趣的宋海军，从本科时候开始，对多种生物的灭绝过程进行了探索。他2018年发表在《科学-进展》和《美国地质学会会刊》的研究成果入选2018年度中国古生物学十大进展：生物多样性在灭绝事件发生后就开始反弹，5百万年后恢复到了灭绝前的水平，而生态系统的恢复需要5千万年。大灭绝事件对生态系统的破坏程度，比当前的认识更为严重。“如果是这种情况，我们会不会有第六次生物大灭绝呢？”
