करणीया अकिञ्चनानां सेवा

परमविरक्तः तपस्वी महर्षिः रमणः धर्मशात्राध्ययनेन सङ्कल्पं कृतवान् यत् आवश्यकतायाः अधिकं वस्तु न सङ्ग्रहणीयम् इति । कदाचित् महर्षेः सकाशे यत् एकमेव कौपीनम् आसीत् तदपि शीर्णम् जातम् । महर्षिं दृष्ट्वा नितरां खिन्नाः परमभक्ताः धीरजनाः अञ्जलिं बद्ध्वा नूतनं कौपीनं दद्याम वयम् इति प्रार्थितवन्तः । तदा महर्षिः स्मितपूर्वकम् उक्तवान् -’मत्परिसरे असङ्ख्याः जनाः सन्ति ये च शैत्येन कम्पमानाः रात्रिं यापयन्ति । अकिञ्चनेषु दरिद्रेषु च यूयं भगवन्तं पश्यत । एषः एव अस्माकं धर्मशास्त्रस्य सारः' इति । तम् उपदेशं मनसि गृहीत्वा दरिद्राणाम् अकिञ्चनानां च सेवायै स्वकीयं जीवनम् अर्पितवन्तः ते भक्ताः ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

The highly detached sage Maharshi Ramana, through the study of religious scriptures, had made a vow that he would not accumulate anything more than necessary. He owned only one loincloth, which was worn out. Seeing Maharshi sewing the loincloth, some devoted disciples felt very distressed and offered to give a new loincloth. Maharshi smilingly said, ‘There are many people in my surroundings, who shiver through the night due to the cold. See God in the destitute and the poor. This is the essence of our religious scriptures’. From then on, the devotees dedicated their lives to the service of the poor and the destitute.
