अभ्यर्थिनः परीक्षा

कस्मिंश्चित् गुरुकुले शिक्षकस्य आवश्यकता आसीत् । तदर्थं त्रयः अभ्यर्थिनः उपस्थिताः । आचार्यः जवनिकायाः पृष्ठतः स्थित्वा प्रश्नं कृतवान् "ज्ञानं प्रमुखम् उत छात्रप्रीतिः?" प्रथमः ज्ञानस्य प्राधान्यम् उक्तवान्, द्वितीयः उभयोः महत्त्वम् अङ्गीकृतवान् । तृतीयः छात्रप्रीतिः प्रमुखा इति मत्वा, ज्ञानं प्रयत्नेन अपि वर्धयितुं शक्यम् इति अवदत् । गुरुणा पुनः प्रश्नः कृतः "किमर्थं जवनिकायाः पृष्ठतः स्थित्वा मया प्रश्नः कृतः?" अभ्यर्थिनः पक्षपातं न भवेत्, रूपं वा वाणी वा प्रभावं न जनयेत् इति द्वौ अभ्यर्थिनौ विभिन्नं कारणम् अवदताम् । तृतीयस्य उत्तरं युक्ततमम् आसीत् - अभ्यर्थिनः ज्ञानं, छात्रप्रीतिं, मधुरभाषितां च परीक्षितुम् एव भवता एवं कृतम् इति । अतः आचार्यः तम् एव अध्यापकत्वेन चितवान् ।

In a certain gurukula, a teacher was needed. Three candidates appeared. The acharya, hidden behind a curtain, asked, “What is more important—knowledge or affection for students?” The first emphasized knowledge, the second valued both equally, and the third said student affection is primary, as knowledge can be cultivated with effort. The acharya then asked why he had questioned them from behind a curtain. Two gave varied reasons to avoid bias, but the third insightfully replied, “It was to assess our knowledge, student empathy, and gentle speech without external influence.” Impressed, the acharya chose him as the teacher.
