अतिलोभः विनाशाय भवति

भगवान् बुद्धः पूर्वस्मिन् जन्मनि बोधिसत्त्वनामकः क्रीडनकविक्रेता आसीत् । अन्यः अपि विक्रेता आसीत् यः स्वभावेन दुष्टः वञ्चकः च । कदाचित् दुष्टः क्रीडनकविक्रेता एकस्य गृहस्य पुरतः आगतः तदा काचित् बाला 'क्रीडनकं दापयतु' इति वृद्धाम् अपृच्छत् ।  वृद्धा एकां पुरातनीं स्थालिकाम् आनीय स्थालिकायाः विनिमयेन एकं क्रीडनकं यच्छ इति क्रीडनकविक्रेतारम् अयाचत । 'तुच्छम् अपि क्रीडनकं न प्राप्यते अनेन स्थालिकाविनिमयेन । अन्यत् पात्रं वा धनं वा आनयतु' इति उक्त्वा ततः गतः । परेद्युः यदा बोधिसत्त्वः क्रीडनविक्रयणार्थम् आगतः सा वृद्धा तम् अपि अहूय स्थालिकां दर्शितवती । सुर्वर्णमयीं स्थालिकां दृष्ट्वा बोधिसत्त्वः सर्वाणि अपि क्रीडनकानि, स्वसमीपस्थं सर्वमपि धनं च दत्त्वा गतः । वञ्चकः विक्रेता प्रवृत्तं सर्वं ज्ञात्वा शोकमग्नः अभवत् ।

In a previous birth, the Buddha was a toy-seller named Bodhisattva. Another seller was wicked and deceitful. One day, the deceitful seller came before a house where a little girl asked her grandmother for a toy. The grandmother brought out an old bowl and requested a toy in exchange. The wicked seller scoffed, saying, “Not even a worthless toy can be given for this. Bring another vessel or money,” and left. The next day, Bodhisattva came selling toys. The grandmother showed him the same bowl. Seeing that it was made of gold, Bodhisattva gave her all his toys and all his money, then departed. When the deceitful seller later learned what had happened, he was overcome with grief.
