धनं देशसेवायै

कस्मिंश्चित् विद्यालये आचार्यः पृच्छति यत् 'यदि मार्गे वज्रं प्राप्येत तर्हि भवन्तः किं कुर्युः?’ इति । एकैकः छात्रः एकैकविधं धनस्य उपयोगम् अवदत् । अन्ते कश्चन छात्रः अवदत् 'अहं वज्रं तस्य स्वामिने अर्पयिष्यामि । यदि सः न लभ्यते तर्हि वज्रम् आरक्षकाधीनं सर्वकाराधीनं वा करिष्यामि । यदि तस्य विक्रयणं करणीयम् इति आपतेत् तर्हि तस्य मूल्यराशेः उपयोगं देशसेवायै, निर्धनानां साहाय्याय, जनोपकराय च करिष्यामि' इति  । तस्य नाम अस्ति 'गोपालकृष्णगोखले' यः 'महादेशभक्तत्वेन ख्यातः जातः ।

In a school, a teacher asked, “If you found a diamond on the road, what would you do?” Each student gave different answers about using the wealth. Finally, one student said, “I would return the diamond to its owner. If the owner cannot be found, I would hand it over to the authorities. If it must be sold, I would use the money for serving the nation, helping the poor, and public welfare.” That student was Gopal Krishna Gokhale, later renowned as a great patriot of India.
