सज्जनसङ्गः श्रीगन्धः इव

शय्याम् आश्रितवान् कश्चन वृद्धः स्वपुत्रं प्रति कानिचन मार्गदर्शकवाक्यानि वदति । यथा सात्त्विकं जीवनं करणीयं, पापकार्याणि न करणीयानि, सज्जनसङ्गः करणीयः, दुर्जनसङ्गः परिहरणीयः इत्यादीनि । विषयं स्पष्टतया अवगमयितुं सः वृद्धः श्रीगन्धचूर्णं अङ्गारचूर्णं च आनाय्य प्रयोगमेकम् कारयति । केवलस्य बोधनस्य अपेक्षया कदाचित् प्रयोगेण विषयस्य अवगमनं शीघ्रं सम्यक् च भवति । तद्बोधिका कथा एषा ।

An old man offers some advice to his son. He tells him to live a righteous life, avoid sinful actions, seek the company of good people and stay away from bad company. Rather than simply explaining, he shows how the lesson is quickly and effectively understood through experience. This story illustrates the importance of learning through practice.
