साक्षी गोपालः

तीर्थयात्रासमये कश्चन धनिकः वृद्धः कस्यचन निर्धनस्य युवकस्य सेवातः सन्तुष्टः भूत्वा स्वकन्यां तुभ्यं ददामि इति वृन्दावने गोपालस्य पुरतः अवदत् । गृहगमनानतरं एतत् प्रस्तावं वृद्धस्य पुत्रः निराकरोत् । अतः यदा तरुणः विवाहविषये अपृच्छत् तदा वृद्धः 'अहं किमपि न स्मरामि' इति अवदत् । वृद्धस्य पुत्रः  दोषारोपणं यदा अकरोत् तदा तरुणः अवदत् यत् भवतः पिता गोपालस्य पुरतः एव प्रतिज्ञा कृता इति । 'तर्हि गोपालः एव अत्र आगत्य साक्ष्यं वदेत् चेत् अहं‌ भगिनीं भवते दद्याम्' इति पुत्रः अवदत् । तरुणः वृन्दावनं गत्वा यदा प्रार्थयते तदा गोपालः तम् अनुसृत्य विद्यानगरं प्रति आगत्य साक्ष्यम् अवदत् । एतस्मात् तस्य नाम 'साक्षी गोपालः' इति जातम् । अग्रे राजा पुरुषोत्तमः गोपालविग्रहं नीत्वा जगन्नाथपुरीसमीपे प्रतिष्ठापितवान् ।

During a pilgrimage, a wealthy old man was so impressed by a poor young man's service that he promised to give his daughter in marriage, making the vow before the deity Gopala in Vrindavan. But back home, the old man's son rejected the proposal, and the old man claimed he didn’t remember it. When the young man insisted the promise was made before Gopala, the son challenged him: “If Gopala comes and testifies, I’ll agree.” The young man prayed, and miraculously, Gopala followed him to Vidyanagar and gave witness. From then on, the deity was known as Sakshi Gopala — “ Gopala the Witness.” Later, King Purushottama installed the deity near Jagannath Puri.
