Transfer Window Reviews: The Two Footed Podcast

Today we're going to begin reviewing the transfer windows of all 20 Premier League teams. Today we're going to go Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton, Chelsea and Coventry City. And then tomorrow we will do the next seven and Thursday we will do the last six. So we'll begin with Arsenal. So if we look at the outgoing Caroline Kevure who was on loan last season, Trossard who was their best attacker last season, Norgard who barely played, Gabrielle Jesus who barely played Fabio Vieira who was on loan last season and Gabrielle Mark Nally. So that's both left-wingers sold. They did get good money for

1:10Mark Nally, 60 million, that would only have come from the Saudis. I feel they sold low on Trossard at 15 million considering how important he was for them. They definitely sold low on Jesus. They got less than 9 million. They sold very low on Fabio Vieira. I think they paid, I think they paid 30 to get him. Let me have a quick glance. But they got 10 million euro which is a lot less than they were initially asking. They paid 30 million plus 4.4 in add-ons. I wouldn't imagine those add-ons ever kicked in. So it's a 20 million loss, over 20 million loss on Fabio Vieira which isn't great. Kevure, again, I just feel like these are low. I mean they lost money on Kevure. They lose about 5 million on him, 20 million on Vieira. Trossard, they lose 11 and a half on,

2:14Norgard, that is a centipede, even? No, they lost 3 million on him. Actually more because because they won the league and he did play, he played seven times so he will have gotten a medal. I'd imagine they've lost probably 12, they probably paid 12, 13 maybe. They've probably lost 5 on him. Lost a ton of money on Gabriel Jesus who they paid over 40 million for. So even with the Martin Alley sale, which is a good sale, on that group of players, they've actually lost money which is very strange. They loaned out Ethan Nguyeneri, they did get 4.3 million as a loan fee which is good. They loaned out Tommy Setford as well. And then we look at the incoming. So Hincapier was there already.

3:14Melier on a free, I don't like, I just don't think he's any good. Solus is a talent but I think he's a back up at the Premier League level. At this stage he may well develop over the next year or two and become a very good starter. But I don't think he's a starter for a team that wants to win the Premier League. Now maybe that... I think plus some add-ons to get him. Then they bought Bruno Gamerish for 75 million. Obviously a very good player but he is in physical decline. Now he could probably alter his game a little bit and become more of a sitter and he has the game to do that so it could be okay but I think he's got like two really good years left and then I think we'll see him start to decline. How long did they sign him for? A four-year contract. It's unusual to pay 75 million for a player

4:17and only give them a four-year contract. As we consider they paid 55 for including some add-ons and I believe he signed a five-year deal. Again he's a very good defender. I do have concerns about smaller defenders who rely on athleticism as they age. He's 29 soon as is Gamerish. So I think he will be good in the short term. I wonder how it ages. Overall they have gotten better. They're stronger in midfield and they're stronger in defense but they're definitely weaker in attack. They're definitely weaker in attack. The goalkeeping core I mean you're swapping out one third choice for another so it's it's kind of irrelevant. Overall they got better. Going out and getting Gamerish in cons it is kind of splashy even though nobody looked at Arsenal last season and said

5:20well they need to strengthen in midfield and in defense everybody could see the attack was the issue. They didn't address that. They didn't address their biggest issue. They have not gotten better in attack. They've gotten worse. Even if Solas has a good season. Is he going to be better than Trossard was last year? I have doubts on that. He might be better than Mark Nelly was last year but Trossard was the best attacker. I think it's a B window. I think it's a solid B I think ultimately the fan base feels disappointed because they were promised so much because a lot of them listened to spoofers. Went for Rogers got turned down. Went for Berkola got turned down. Went for Vinny got turned down. Went for Illuminum and Jai got turned down. If they'd gone from a little bit earlier they would have gotten them but by the time City got into the race they weren't

6:22going to get him. Went for Alvarez. He turned them down as well. I feel like the fan base are a little bit disillusioned by that window. It did show that there's not a pull there for attacking players to go and play for Arsenal. But overall I mean you know defensively it's an exceptionally strong squad. Midfield is an exceptionally strong group. The attack everything depends on Bkayo's attacker. Everything depends on him and he has not stared at the season particularly well. I know he's got a couple of goals. He's not playing well. I would give their window a B. Moving on to Astin Villa obviously a massive window for them. Donnell Mallen leaves Enzo Baroness. They've built been on loans so that's fine. They sell Lewis Dobin. He'd also been on loan. They sell Leon Bailey. He had been on loan. He'd come back. He was playing but now he's

7:24gone. They sell Ali Watkins, Amy Martinez, Esri Conza, Lucidina, Morgan Rogers and Yuri Telemans. It's a lot of starters out the door. It really really is. However I think other than Rogers I think they were happy to sell all of those players. I think if they could have kept Rogers and sold every one of those other players I think they would have been absolutely thrilled with what happened because they got rid of players who were 29, 30, 31, 32. They replaced them with younger players that will get on to. They got in good money from all of these players and they avoided having to give them the next contract because while they're good players now on the next contract is when you're really going to see the sharp decline and ultimately I think Villa will have been happy with those sales. They loaned in Garnacio and Juan Bessaca. Juan Bessaca I could take or leave. Garnacio I really

8:29like the gamble. There is an obligation to buy but I assume it's based on a number of appearances. They signed Cepacy say Young sent it back. Well it can't very promising. We'll see. Manzambi is a huge talent. Joe Gomes is fine. He's overrated because he's Brazilian but he is fine. He's a solid Premier League midfielder. He had the worst debut I've ever seen though. Rujeri is good. He is a significant upgrade on Dina. Zion Suzuki very talented with his feet, very talented shortstopper but he is very error prone. Now he's still young for a goalkeeper. He is 24 years of age. He has time to get all of that out of his game. So that I think that ultimately will work out long time. Didn't like the signing of Guretska. I think he's been washed for a few years.

9:32Nicholas Jackson I think the price is fine. 47 and a half. Now he's not a big time goal scorer. We know that his finishing is a kill he's healed but his all-round game is really good. And you know it's not like he doesn't score. Last season a V Rial 13 goals. Two seasons of Chelsea 17 and 13. Last season with Bayern 11. I should have said his last season with V Rial. So you know over the last four years he has scored 54 goals. He's regularly available. He's not a player that's really had too many injury problems. He's quick. He's aggressive. He's strong. His hold up plays Gordy's only just turned 25. I quite like that one. Tell her how would Bellas is a solid signing. He's not as quick as Conzer but he is a better passer of the ball

10:33and he is better in the air. Well-schooled at Man City. He had a bunch of good loans. He's played in the Premier League. He's been really good for Seth Hampton. I like the signing of Harald Bellas. And Ibrahim and Bay is his Dismashe one but I look at him and Manzambi in particular. And I think in two to three years we're looking at the pair of them as absolute stars in this Aston Villa team. And Bay is a winger but I think he might actually be better through the middle and I wonder if in time we see Villa alter the shape and go to more of a 4-4-2 with him playing up front with Nicholas Jackson. And his strengths which are his ball striking his ability to get into position and get shots away quickly. I think that could fit really well with his international teammates who has the hold up play and can be kind of that more target man. You get a little

11:36large pairing there. I quite like that. Overall considering the financial situation that Villa have been in. I actually think they had a really good window. Now they've started the season Brad Flee which is only to be expected. You took one two three four five six starters out of the team. Six experienced pros out of the team and you replaced them with largely younger players. You know players that are 25 or younger players still trying to find their way players trying to adapt to either a new league or a new club. I think right now people are looking at this window one way but long term I think they will look at this window as a really good reset by Aston Villa. This is stage one of a reset. I don't think this is a one window thing. I think they'll have to go again next year because you've still got the likes of McGinn. Maddie Cash is still a starter and

12:42like no disrespect. You can't be looking at Wambasaka as your long term starter if you've got intentions to be a Champions League club. As a backup fine but you already have a guy who'd be fine as a backup in cash. Wambasaka will be 29 this year as well so it's not like a thing that he's got exceptionally you know an exceptionally long runway in front of him. I'll give it a B minus because in the short term there's going to be some pain because there's a lot of players that are going to need to settle and develop but in the long term I think we'll look back on this window quite favorably and I genuinely believe that those in charge at Aston Villa are actually very happy to have gotten Watkins, Martinez, Conzer, Dina and Telemans off the books. Rogers I imagine is the one that they'll be disappointed by but you know you've got younger in gold you've got younger at center back you've got younger at left back you've also

13:47gotten better at left back and let's not pretend that the Emmy Martinez they sold as the one from 2022. That Emmy Martinez is a distant memory. This Emmy Martinez that they've sold has become quite sluggish. His reflexes are definitely failing and he's not as quick with his face. He's a fundamentally sound goalkeeper but his athleticism is definitely dropped significantly. He just need to look at the Harvard School at the weekend. It gives them also the opportunity to give Mats and Moron at left back which I think can be good. The midfield everything depends on Bubba Carr Camara but I did see that I know Sasha reported first but I've seen other people say it O'Nana is renewing his contract. That is huge because he is a top player. If you put him when he gets back and Camara behind Manzambi that could be really really scary for teams to deal with. Now

14:52you can't do that if you're doing the 4-4-2 that I suggested earlier but again and bike and play from the wing and it's absolutely fine. I really hope Garnautial learns from the last couple of years and gets his head down and starts to work and starts to perform and show the talent that he's capable of showing. I think it's a big season for Brian Madjo, for Alison and for George Hemings and again I think this leans into this is what they wanted. They wanted to open up opportunities for these younger players to get minutes to show what they can do. There's other youngsters that they've got under contract like Allscan and Thorene Scarsia who they've never really given opportunities to. I think the next crop have to get opportunities and I think Villa ultimately

15:54have had a good season. I'm going to go B- for now but I do think long-term I think that's going to be look back on as a favorable window because it allows them now to get their heads above water. In terms of squad cost the players they've brought in will be on less money than the players they sold and I think it gets them a more natural timeline to build to Villa we're never going to win the league with the team they had. This might be the start of Villa building towards a team that can actually challenge for the title with players like him by like Madjo, maybe Allison, Hemings looks a player, Manzambi, Rujeri, Matsun like these are young players, Suzuki potentially, Harwood Bellas I think if you're winning it tightly it's probably your third centre back but he's still good you know he is still good. There's work to do in future windows but overall I think Villa did pretty well. Up next is Bournemouth they had a fairly quiet window

16:59all things considered. No they did lose and Donnie Role obviously and they brought in Marco Rosa as a replacement but in terms of players will Dennis left he was the third choice goalkeeper Ennis Unal left and Hamad Treyori who'd been on loan left. They also loaned Alex Himinez, Alex Polson and Romain Favourite who's never really worked out. They lost Marcus Seneese he's the only player they lost that really made an impact. They replaced him with Antonio Silva, they upgraded on Unal with Alvaro Rodriguez and they replaced Himinez with Juan Luis which is you know I think a comparable replacement. They spent roughly 60 million they also loaned in Michel de Gregorio who is good, solid, we really good backup for them. Overall I liked the window I think they had more to do. I would have liked to have seen another

18:03centre back come in. I would have liked to have seen another midfielder added and potentially another body out wide but I understood why they didn't do that because they want to give opportunities to Cliver as he was coming back from the injury that kind of spoiled last season on him. Tavenir had a really strong year so you don't want to kick him out of the team. All focus is on Ryan. Crupe is going to play in multiple positions for them when he gets back so I understood not not adding in those areas but I really liked the Alvaro Rodriguez signing he is very very talented. When he can through it rail Madrid like when he was 16-17 people thought he was going to become rails. Long time number nine didn't work out. Went to L. C. did well now he gets a move to Bournemouth and if he does well there he'll get a move elsewhere. Antonio Silva we're not all that long away from Antonio Silva but talked about as the first 100 million pan centre back so you know the

19:03pedigree is there he's not the quickest but he's very good in the ball he leads the game well he's a good leader and an organizer. I don't like the pairing with him and Hill. I think him and Diakite would be better although Diakite is a little bit shorter than Hill but I think long term well in medium term the plan is him to go with the the giant Serbian kid that's really Serbian. The reason that it didn't touch midfield is so I think Alex taught is going to get a lot of opportunity this year and it wouldn't surprise me if Alex taught and Alex Scott end up as appearing for a longer run if Tyler Adams gets hurt. I will give their window I'll give it a B I'll give it a B. I will be back after this. Right welcome back so so Brentford, Janik Schuster from Red Bulls actually will do the outs first.

20:10Frank on Yekka who spent last season on Lone or most of it they got rid of Jordan Henderson and Ethan Pinnock moved on. They loaned in Aiden Stokes a young apparently quite talented goalkeeper comes to them from New York Red Bulls. He was born in New Jersey and is represented America at underage level but he's also represented Wales and England at underage level. So clearly there's a lot of people in the game that raid him. They've got him in on Lone I think with an option to buy at the end of the Lone when they see how he does. This season I assume you'll play for like Brentford beating. Janik Schuster loved the signing. I think Janik Schuster is one of the brightest young centre-back talents around 20-year-old Austrian 6-3 good on the ball decent pace.

21:13I think he's going to be a fairly dominant player. I love that move for 12 million it's a bargain. Jaden Anthony from Burnley it's a solid edition. He's not a spectacular player but he is reliably can play all across the attack. He will work really really hard he brings experience and what I like about him as well is well firstly he's been well schooled he was in the Arsenal Academy and then he finished in the Bournemouth Academy and obviously broke through it Bournemouth but he hasn't done things the easy way like he has done things the hard way at times. He's had to go and play in the National League on Lone when he broke into the Bournemouth team they were in the championship. He went to Leeds on Lone they were in the championship went to Burnley on Lone they were in the championship he's been through a relegation so he's actually been through two relegations of an opposite no one relegation one relegation um he would have been at Bournemouth when they relegated the first time but he's he's experienced toughness

22:21you know and I think he's the type of player that will grind every single day so I do like that as an edition. Kalim Wilson has a grown up in the room yeah absolutely um he can still score at the Premier League level now he can't play regularly you know injuries have slowed him down but last season he played 32 times no a lot of them are off the bench which makes his seven Premier League goals pretty impressive to be honest like this is a guy that just knows how to put the ball in the back of the net in the Premier League and I would be interested to know what his minutes to goal ratio is across his Premier League career with Bournemouth with Newcastle and with West Ham last year I reckon it's pretty decent I think that's a solid pick up on a free Mamaru Sangheir is going to earn them a fortune they paid 41 if they get any less than 80

23:21I'll be surprised I think they'll keep them two years if they can I think that will be good for him as well to fully develop into the player he can be they signed Darwin Guigua I think is how it's pronounced from independent the Dele Valley who by all accounts is massively talented a midfielder he's 18 years of age he's gone to Merida in Spain on loan I don't think he'd get a work permit I think that's what it was Merida are owned by the same people that own Brentford it's the the third prong or whatever in the trident but by all accounts a very very talented midfielder out of the independent Dele Valley club and then they landed El Haji Malikjufe which I mean what a

24:21player he is one of the most exciting young left-backs in the world he's 21 he's big he's quick he's powerful he's a great crawl through the ball he has a lot to learn positionally like his defensive work needs work but he's aggressive and he's diligent and he tries and you know I really like the idea of coyote or one wing and him and the other and earlier in the summer I went through their squad and said if they can land him they've basically got two good players everywhere I really like this squad I think it's one of the better squads now when I say that I mean in relative to where we expect them to be with the the parth repotement so in the Premier League you've got the rich age okay you've got the traditional big six Liverpool United Arsenal Chelsea City Inspires plus Villa who have moved themselves back among the elite and Newcastle who got all the money

25:26they're the rich age okay their squads need to be looked at different to the next group the next group is the teams that I would kind of classify as European contenders if one or two the the rich eight have a bad season these are the clubs that can jump in and grab a European spot I think Brentford have comfortably now comfortably the best squad of that group I'm really impressed that's an A-wendell Schuster great addition Anthony good addition Wilson smart addition Sangare unbelievable addition and Elhaj Malikjuf great addition if the Ecuadorian kid works fantastic they also signed a young Irish centre back called Donal O'Connor from Cork City I can't say I'm familiar with them they brought in a couple of other young players who I haven't heard of Joseph Wheeler Henry from Chelsea Sam Senny Richardson from Chatham Town Ben Wilson from Glen Avan

26:32and Kiefer Gorman from Watford their young players that will go into their you know their beating their academy level but overall I'm just so impressed I had hoped that Eunice Kohnak would get some opportunity this year he's been sent on loan to Lincoln um see how he does I like him I think he's gonna be good and I did know that they re-opped the contracts of Josh De Silva Rico Henry Amitaius Jensen for a year each which makes sense they also of course secured a long-term contract with Coyote which is huge for them because he is he is magnificently good A-wendell no question about it that is as impressive as anything I've seen from a Premier League team in their area that is so so good to address all of your needs and and not really really just if it gaps like there's no

27:32real gaps in that squad so all things considered very very impressive uh up next we have Brighton and Hove Albion so going out Sarmi and Tohi had been on loan Van Hecker they got great money for him especially here left sold Diego Coppola didn't like that one you should have been keeping him he's good that's a really poor decision in my view now I know the manager wasn't keen but I think that's poor decision sold well back fair enough uh sold Carl Rushworth got great money for him sold low unbelieber but I don't think there had much choice in the matter of his head had that spun a while ago um also loaned out brand gruda again Tommy Watson when a note air in cash and I still haven't worked out why they bought him uh Mario calls your jubbery and Rodrigo Rizzo all gone on loan

28:34coming in costigna solid solves a problem at right back Zadok Yohana enormous talent right-sided winger um Nigerian but was playing in Sweden huge talent beat off a number of teams to get him Pascal Struick is good he's a solid premier league operator as it turned out though I would have bought the fella that leads bought to replace him but still it's a good signing I don't understand the Rodrigo regal signing like I'm not I'm not trying to be funny here but like he he hadn't made the grade at Benfica and he wasn't exactly tearing it up for Benfica B and when you sent him on loan you sent him to the second division in Spain which suggests he's an awful long way from Premier League ready so I don't really understand what the purpose of that deal was um michael so the so the boulder is fine he's big and he's

29:41strong but he is a little bit slow um 27 does not tonnery sell value there I thought that was a weird one I would have just brought Kapole back who's a better player and a bigger prospect younger you already owned him that's what I would have done um Lukavusk which is an unbelievably good signing one of the signings of the summer um to get him for 8 million or 6 million less than you sold an inferior player great business Joe and Hajim um young Algerian well 23 year old Algerian left back um he's good he's a good player now young boys have made a decent profit on him because I think they paid like a million for him and bright and paid like 12 I think to buy him two years later but he is good he is good didn't think left back was the position of need I wonder if they thought they were going to lose Cadillac glue on deadline day nonetheless he he can play left back

30:43he could work in a back three he'll be fine he'll find a role um Chima Andres it's one of the signings of the summer for that price 15.5 million surprised that stood guard sold him for that price huge talent now he's not ready to start in the Premier League but it won't take him long and he's going to be really good to if they were a club that were like really building for the long haul to get Vuskovic's center back and him as you're holding midfielder in the same summer like those would be foundational pieces. Femi Aziz is a good addition a very good player in the championship over the last couple of years from Millwall he's been around a long time I mean he was out reading a long long time ago another one who took a you know an unusual path in the game you got

31:48released by Watford as a kid went to Northwood I think they're playing like the eighth tier played for them went to wheelstone playing the national league had a loan from there at Hanwell Town Reading gave me a chance he did well and then Millwall snapped him up and again he did well at Millwall he's he's more creative than goal scorer but he is good is he a Premier League calmer player yet we'll see but I like the signing I don't love the window but I love the Vuskovic andres and Johanna signings I think those three signings like like I said if you're building for the long hole you'd be like right center back tick lead center back tick defensive midfielder tick right winger tick boxed off don't need to worry about them for quite a while few other signings again Castini Sturic the good it's solid Hajim good solid Aziz good solid

32:51suboad it it is what it is it's just leaves me a bit cold leaves me a bit cold I'll give them a B I think they could have done a little bit more I feel like they could have done a little bit more I probably if I was them would have looked for another center back because I wouldn't because I would have moved Lewis Dongon that that's the thing that I'm looking at here I would have moved Lewis Dongon he is a liability at this point he's actively hurting the team but he's the club captain he's a club legend and they're not going to do that and I think it holds them back yeah B B minus you know what B minus but Vuskovic is an A and Andres I think will be an A so it could end up being a much better window in a couple of years than it looks right now I'll be back after the break with Chelsea and Coventry right welcome back so

33:56Chelsea football club this is going to take a while sales Cookerayet George Santos Chalaba Delape Jackson Dattro Fafana Toson Enzo and Marquis how they got the fees they got for some of those players I don't know but it's an incredible summer of sales the sales are an A plus they're an A plus loans Garnacho Jorgensen Sat Piave Badi Ashile Dessasse Saraje Wiley Sego Moudric and Sanchez Fair enough my question would be why on earth are these players still contracted to your club you couldn't find a buyer now Sar I wouldn't alone he should be in the squad the rest of them Fair enough but sell them and I know one or two of them do have

35:03obligations and whatever but still now the in commings um Holesstra overpaid but good signing Omega I mean you bought him a year ahead of time he's a stinking year I he's now your third choice striker behind Danny Welbeck speaking of you sign Danny Welbeck you sign Jordan Henderson to be a cheerleader I guess you overpaid for Valentines Barrel to help Strasbourg's books you overpaid massively for Rogers but I love Rogers I think he's a great player but it's about a 30 million overpay Quenda is an overpay but he's very very talented Laquat is an overpay but in a back three he's fine Chevaria as a wingback yeah he's a good player but is he good enough for Chelsea like he's 28 and yeah he's been good for Ryo via Cano but I'm not sure he's good enough to play

36:08regularly for a team that wants to win the Premier League and then Emmy Martinez and they also signed Sat Paiya but then London straightaway they signed Emmy Martinez I don't like to deal he's better than Sanchez for sure but still like I I don't think he's a title winning goal keeper at this point um they also signed to Brazilian left back called Denner he may or may not ever play for them they got stronger at the back and Rogers makes them stronger in attack with the definitely weaker in midfield like to sell Enzo and Andres Santos and the midfielder you bring in Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco I suppose but I mean I have questions I think he's better from wide areas

37:08I could see Barco potentially becoming Jabi's Gromaldo as a left wingback with reduced defensive responsibilities and I could see him doing really well there because he's a very creative player but in the center midfield I'm not sure Jordan Henderson can't play in this division anymore and that's been the case for six years like Brentford were significantly better out of master and I don't care what results say I know what I watched it's it's like the Arsenal window where they've strengthened in certain areas and then massively hurt themselves in another and I think they've massively hurt themselves in midfield now I've always been a proponent of selling Enzo because him and Moises didn't work now I would have preferred if they'd sold Moises to Liverpool but you know it is what it is if they had landed Lamine Camara

38:13this would be an A-wendo without question because of what they did in terms of the sales like the sales of just sensation like 48 million for Santos 26 for Chalabah 45 for the lap 14.6 million for Marquis who was never never played really for them I will say I'll give them a B-plus I'll give them a B-plus it's definitely it's an A-plus for sales it's probably a C-plus for the boys and like I say I like a love Rodgers I think he's great I think Plesscher is going to be a very good player in time but you've overpaid drastically for for both really and you've overpaid for La Cuele without question and again you've bought a bunch of players that may never play for you like I really like

39:16Wend I think he's a supremely talented player I don't know if he's going to play for Chelsea very often I mean Estavo can't get in the team at the minute so we'll see I'll go B-plus Coventry City newly promoted and our final team for today so outgoing uh where are we where are we Genoa Marquello sold to Chabab Allalee for 4.4 million a 23 year old who if I'm not mistaken was signed in January for like 2 million they've sold them at a profit he barely played sold grand um loaned in Stephen Muffeni from Manchester City very highly regarded center back and played left back and then got busy they signed Franklin Yekahood been there last season it made sense to keep

40:21Lom Chouanna was poor for Burnley but he is talented and he's really quick a revender loved the signing they brought in Harrison Gray from Swindon on a free along with six other young players they signed Karl Rushwood I like him I think he's good they signed Caleb Yarenki I love that signing I think that's one of the best signings of the summer to be honest now it might take him some time to fully adapt to the league but I think is I think he's sealing his sky high they brought Ghost Hammerback love it got him on the cheap six million that's a good player it's a very good player I don't love the Iwani ideal I get why they did it he's an experienced physical line leading number nine you kind of had line leading number nine as you needed someone that could score your goals he doesn't score goals Siddiqui Sharif has the potential to be one of the signings of the summer but not this season like in two to three years we could be looking at him going wow what a
