4:18But I thought I thought it was in your others considered but no it was We're done talking about it. Well, hey, it proves it proves it was bold. It was bold I'll say this with Brock Bowers already going down for a couple games. I don't see him breaking Michael Thomas's reception record So I'm not doing any bragging about mine either as we get going here, but we'll see we'll see what happens with the rest of them. We put that to bed. Let's not bring that up now for 18 night what a 25 weeks. We don't have to talk about that stuff. We've got real football to be played week one. I say a most important week one for the chief since when So I actually I took like of course, it's going to surprise nobody I took sort of a data approach to this and It's been since 2018 since the cheese for this long of a shot to win the Super Bowl There are 16 to one on most books, you know, there were years. I think it was like 2020 and 21 where they were just 4.5 to 1.99 to 2

5:26to win the Super Bowl and The last time they really completely reshaped their roster of course was 2022 and Even then they opened as a touchdown favorite in Arizona You know on the road and they still had that year the third best odds To win the Super Bowl in the entire NFL because at that point everyone had thought even though they traded tirey kill They completely re-ramp their defense. They're gonna have to play a bunch of rookies that Hey, it's my homes. It's my homes. It's Andy Reed like that was that was the belief This is the first time that the doubt has fixated on Pashable homes and Andy Reed the doubts on Andy Reed because of the scheme it looks stale a year ago the doubts on Pashable homes Because of his knee injury that he's coming back from after nine months. It's so I think it's At minimum, I think it's the biggest week one they've had since they were together in week one and 2018 And 2018 so it goes back to 2018 Jeff biggest week one for the Chief since when I go back farther

6:26I go back today and he reads for a season 2013 and I said that because it's I think anything of the Patrick Mahomes here is hard for me to draw a comparison just because you know They were so they were always on the cusp of being able to break through and he was supposed to be to got to get them over the hop and at some point you imagine That was going to happen as he progresses a quarterback, but I think 2013 you're talking about a team that had drafted first overall They were trying to figure out who they were going to be identity wise the Denver Broncos were the best team In the division at that point, which is happening right now and you didn't know where was gonna go And so I feel like this team right now is certainly the similar place where it's talented as Mahomes is as great as Andy Reed is as accomplished as Chris General the Travis Kelsey have been a lot of this team success relies on players That we just don't know a whole lot about and so I think that you saw with that year one for them and what became of the Chiefs after that I think the same is true a look at happening with this group of things go right I'll point out that the because I left it out the Chiefs were 30 to 1 to win a Super Bowl and Patrick Mahomes first year

7:34So because I mentioned this is the longest odds that they've had since 2018 it was 30 to 1 his first year Yeah, I like questions like these because they allow you to take a different tact on things I see it as there's a number of things that make this you know game maybe more important than others one It's one of the years they only have eight home games. So every home game is a little bit more precious someone you have nine I think there are a lot of things like his mom's still the top quarterback for the first time he's getting the nod But people are now starting to question it that that's kind of a stake. There's these the other story lines Andy Reed 68 still sharp Can he still be ahead of the curve on the offense that that's out there the personnel where is it good enough some aging players There's all of that but to me the bigger picture is this is is this the end of the dynasty is this the end of a regime Patrick Mahomes isn't going to go away, but another 611 season I don't know that Andy Reed goes. Yeah, I'm back. I think Andy Reed might have to admit I'm not that strong. And so we could see a different coach

8:35If this season doesn't go well. That's the whole season that speaks to what's at stake on the whole year But again with only eight home games. I think it's important to get off to run. I think this is the most important I Would say it's the most important week one since 1999 And in 1999 they were coming off the losing season in 98 after having a run of Marty shot and heimer and winning games and The feeling during all that time is that they were good enough the relevancy of the quarterback was known to be important But not as important as we now see it today We now can look back and be like that was the Achilles heel of Marty shot and hammer carl Peterson They never went all in to go get the quarterback other than Joe Montana And they went to the AFC championship game that one time and so there was a feeling like is this Carl Peterson and and Marty shot and I'm Are thing going to work and the answer was no because Marty stepped out after that and they brought in got the cutting And they're going to try to keep the regime going by bumping up the defensive coordinator They went nine and seven fool themselves into thinking it was still good stayed with Got the kind of m the next year 179 and then and then and brought in dick for me on start to make changes

9:41But I think that's where we are on this. I think this regular this first season game because it's the Broncos a Divisional game is going to go a long way towards deciding What kind of season they're going to have in this season is going to go a long way towards deciding whether or not there is a complete Regime change or maybe at least a head coach change if you want to put it that way But I think if they don't do well, there's no Chris Jones right Chris Jones is going to move on if they don't do well I don't think there's any Travis Kelsey because if they don't do well I don't think either one of those guys are going to play great And there's going to be no reason to keep going with those big numbers So I think this is the beginning and maybe a cop out I like the years you put Both you guys put down there. I think they're they're good answers But I think it there's a potential for there to be an even bigger picture that if at all Domino's fall we can be talking about all the way back to the 90s where we started seeing a period of a lot of change The difference is there's stability and quarterback. I don't think the general manager will be out under any circumstances But I think we could see different quarterback and really the only guy left from the from the whole run being the quarterback

10:41and Patrick Malmins and the kicker and the long snapper if they if they live on but the essence of the 22 be in the quarterback I think it's big as since 99 Yeah, I think First of all, I think you've made it you made a compelling argument But I think a couple things I'd point out first of all their next three games are our games They'll be favored in and and potentially you know touchdown favorites and And a couple of them so I mean when you've got the Colts at home and then you travel to the dolphins The worst human League and the Raiders who are not a great team I think If you had the start of the season of the schedule that the Broncos have for example where they play six great teams like The Broncos need to win week one too because of what's waiting and the next five games The other reason I chose 2018 was because All we had on patchal homes was one meaningless start in week 17 the only meaning that that game had was the patchal homes of the starting

11:43It was sort of the coming out for patchal homes at NLA that day in 2018 to like what is this guy really going to be That's great reason and sure I think the the teams that the the players and the front office that had watched and practiced every day knew The rest of the world didn't that was sort of like this guy's for real Yeah, I think I think that's like I listen like I said I like all The reasons that were given there And I think at the end of the year we're going to look back and we'll be able to write exactly what it was Well, it ended up meaning this this is what it was all about and this is what Came after it Well, I think sorry, it's just for industrial I think the other thing you I think we all agree The first month of the season means way more than it then because previously you thought yeah I mean, it was what week 10 before I was finally saying this team might not make the playoffs I mean, it took me a long time to Jump on board with wow, this team really might not make it Yeah, the many markets was still putting the chiefs is like they were it co-AFC favorites like through like seven eight weeks

12:47And they were like like I mean, what are we going to feel about the chiefs if you know they lose by 14 points or something on that But you know, it's funny though. It's like all three of my answers touching all three different points of themes of this season You went quarterback Sam. I went coach and so we went dynasty I just what this whole season is about for this team. Yeah, I think I think that's a great point It listen and when you said well, they've got three easier games They're not going to look easy if they get shredded by the Broncos Right, so like I think this will set a tone now they may get shredded by the Broncos and then roll three teams We'll be like okay, they're fine bad match up for the Broncos boy. Don't want to see them in the playoffs But anybody else boy, they look good after crushing the cold dolphins and raiders that you know that there's they'll be context to it We won't really know what it all means until we look back on the rest of the season And how they perform after it, but it's it's a big one. We all agree on that And it does not look like they're going to have Josh Simmons How does that affect this game Jeff when you look at it spread went from three to two and a half that day could have been

13:52You know just Two things happening at the same time that weren't related. I think they were but they didn't drop it To Broncos favor by one and I was on in Denver last night and You know, I thought I said they asked me about the spread. I'm like well, I don't get it I got which is actually a good thing for the chiefs I mean somebody in Vegas sees more in the chiefs than I do But what do you make of Josh Simmons not playing in this one? Well, one I imagine the spread might be different This was like week three and they'd have we've seen some evidence of what the chiefs are going to look like right? So I imagine a lot of that That's that but that that betting line is based off what they hope the chiefs can become or what they've historically been In a week one versus what reality might be and but I do think Josh He was not playing this game is a huge huge loss because it allows the Denver Broncos defense It's just to tee off on the run game To force the chiefs into throwing situations and that's not a great scenario for the chiefs to be in it's I we've talked about let tackle at nauseam over the last few weeks since Josh since Josh Simmons situation happened and

14:53We know the deep offensive line is not that deep But I imagine even without Jonathan Cooper that Vance Joseph is thinking looking at chops at what he can do And the majesty can create because there's a lot of opportunities there to take advantage of this this offensive line with a quarterback Is coming back from an ACL tear yeah, yeah, it's say much to mean for you Well, I actually think we're looking at the wrong part of the line I look at the Broncos part of the line because I think there's more questions about the Broncos this year than Then there were a year ago particularly defensively Can you guys even name the eddrusher opposite Nick Benito on the Broncos who's gonna be starting? I can cheat because like my point is like Cooper's not gonna be playing in this game They lost Jonathan Franklin Myers the reason that the Broncos led the NFC and past rush quarterback pressure rate Might be stumbling a little bit. I'm not saying they've got a bad past rush But I'm just saying there's more questions about that group than I think there were last year And so I don't think that number like both teams factor into that number

15:55It's not just about about the cheese. There's there's doubt about the Broncos as well But I mean look I named Josh Simmons the most influential player on the team when we did the exercise outside of patch From a home like and it's because They needed to have a better plan B and the history told them that they should have had a better plan B for Josh Simmons. This is the fourth reason he's missed a football game You know in the last 24 months now and I can't find evidence that Benson has even played a snap at left tackle I can't and I can't like he didn't at all in college like not not even not only did not start a game at left tackle He did not play a snap in college at left tackle and I can't find a team that has started a UDFA rookie At left or right tackle since 2020 when the Cowboys did it which was not a good Cowboys team By the way, and I've missed on this podcast before that the top six pressure rates the chiefs allowed last year Were games that Simmons didn't play and that's when Jalen Moore was the guy they turned to now you're turning to that UDFA

16:58Rookie so I think it's a huge loss and outside of the quarterback missing I actually think it's the most influential loss the chiefs could have yeah, I agree How much does it limit the offense Jeff You're tremendously because look Andy Reid can Talk all he wants to about feeling good about Khalil Benson since that that bucks preseason game and and being excited It doesn't make the same mistake twice whatever It's going to be different and we have no idea how he's going to respond To a position he's never played in a huge huge Arena, you know, Monday night football first game back for Patrick Mahomes You can't tell me that an under after rookie three is going to walk in that situation be totally cool and have his what's about him be able to handle all this stuff Um, and we've seen players like like Wanye Moore struggle We've seen other people come in who have promised I guess a poley and they're not on the team now and so This is he's in a very very difficult position and so I imagine just I think their play calling is going to be a lot like what we saw in that Seattle Patriots game

18:00I think it's going to be very vanilla Very generic. I don't think you want to take a lot of risks. I think the deep shots are going to be limited Because how can you really? Trust your offense when one of the biggest hogs is not there I just don't think that they're going to play those kind of games Pat was asked about it Sam Yesterday we were at the media session and and so was Jeff and and you know asked about how You know Khalil Benson and what does he think what do you think of his answer where his confidence is with Khalil Benson to left tackle Yeah, I mean I Patchwell Holmes is really just an expert at answering questions like that because I mean look he has to be nervous about his left tackle I guess I shouldn't say nervous he has to be uncertain about his left tackle because there is no certainty with the performance you're going to get from Khalil Benson Um, I just I think that it's impossible for even if Khalil Benson was a top You last year at this time we were talking about Josh Simmons. He was a first round pick

19:05Yeah, and we were still like what's Josh Simmons gonna look like in week one? It's it's his first action like what is this really gonna look like Khalil Benson was an undrafted rookie free agent tryout Like this is all the Broncos defense is talking about is what is the best way to maximize the fact that Khalil Benson is starting a left tackle And I'll reference what Sam is in that press cap It was kind of a throwaway line any reput out there and people probably glossed over it because it was a joking fashion But what do you say something about hey, when we all start our first job we feel pretty good about ourselves right we put We're pretty confident. I want to keep him there, right? So he's aware of the confidence aspect of this being a factor Yeah I think that's a good point. I you know instead I go back to Sam you're you referenced them You'll last year you spent a lot of time saying no team has gone to the Super Bowl and won it With a rookie left tackle and only one's gone there right the Patriots went there and lost I think was the was the one stat Now we're talking right now in the expectation is not that Khalil Benson will start all year and have to play in a Super Bowl

20:05The expectation is Josh Simmons will come back But just how that set up that there's a ceiling on what you can do with a rookie left tackle That's a first-round pick now. What is it with a UDFA? And I think it really screams about how thin this team is it's not just here. There are other places that if somebody goes down You're like, oh, that's what's going in there like okay I think that's going to be an interesting. I think this is the you know facing their first adversity coming right out of the gates And their biggest adversity I agree with you. I think he's the top guy That they can't afford to lose Except for Patrick Mahomes and now they're gonna have to face those fears right away. We'll see how they do it against the Denver Broncos Still a lot to get to we want to talk about Patrick Mahomes looking like he's done talking about his knee We'll do it after you're from our friends. Well, I'm sure he's tired of it. I'm sure that he's spent a lot of time hearing about it A lot of time thinking about it. I mean this was a guy who was spending what seven hours a day in rehab and This is probably the first time Patrick Mahomes career that his body has failed him in some way To this is severity, right? And so it's not fun To have to deal with that day after day after day again. I've gone through it a couple times

25:23I understand the rehab process can get very frustrating So I'm sure he's ready to move on from that period and move into a different period. It's no different than When relationships end it's no different than when you graduate from college and you're getting a new job You want things you want to get back to a place of stability fast and he's I think if he had played a preseason game He wouldn't have made that comment Because he's had to wake this long and have to watch everybody else get their opportunity to be out there doing what they love That I think that was more about him just one being Super excited about playing again, but but also two being ready to move off from this really tough part of his life I the if he had played a preseason game it would be different I agree it but I and I actually think the time for that statement by him is leaving the press conference from the first game He played I think he's won press conference early in making that statement go out play 60 minutes come in winter lose You're gonna get some questions how did he feel how did it go first time planning is it because you're gonna Get those after the first game and then okay, we've been through this like so I don't I get I'm with you

26:25I think he's frustrated Sam. I'm with what Jeff says and yeah He's probably he's tired of talking about it But he's also to your point, you know always so good at answering questions your point earlier That I think he would understand that he's got one more session Where he's got to answer these questions? I'm is it just impatience or Or is there more to it with him feeling in need to do it what I think is one press conference premature I thought it was purposeful like I think he went into that press conference thinking that's how he was gonna end that press conferences Is with that comment and I think he wants the world to know that he's over it But the world can't know that until it gets through a game and there's there's a difference between what we've seen and what he feels I thought the most illuminating part of his press conference yesterday Was when I had asked him about if he felt different the start of training camp versus yesterday when he's standing there And he talked about his the entire part of his answer was about his mentality It wasn't about his knee feeling better It was about his confidence and why he was confident He pointed to two moments

27:27The first one was a moment that we talked about maybe five weeks ago because I'd asked him about a play on a fort down Where Peter Woods has basically got the angle on him and he can't get by him So he has to cut and you know plant on one knee and then it's surgically repaired me and try and get by Peter Woods and he and you know, of course anytime that happens they actually blow the whistle and don't let you finish out a play like that and he Initially five weeks ago had said like once I have that juice basically acknowledging like hey I don't completely have that juice yet Yesterday the way he described that play was you know what initially my reaction was I shouldn't have done that And he said but now that was the moment raw. I was like okay I'm good And so I think it's really interesting to hear his perspective on that to that that play even if he didn't have the same juice gave him confidence That he had the health and the second one was where a linebacker had Bull rush to running back and actually had backed into mahalms as he was throwing

28:30And I was there and he's right that the whole I think the way he described as all the coaches are freaking out He's like no, I needed to get hit at some point and I still think it would have been wise to play him and the third preseason game to at least get him a drive Because you want to get past the the mental hurdle But the point is he believes he has check those significant mental boxes And I'd actually argue believing you had is as important as actually doing it because this is this is such a mental Balm if he believes his body is ready I think that's a pretty significant piece of the equation going into Monday night Yeah, we had the I put the comment up there about Is getting a deepest video apparently out where he's you know Talking about where his confidence is and everything like that And he's got a chip on his shoulder and he's motivated everybody loves that I do think that was the chip on the shoulder That was his way of saying enough for your crap But I also think he does still have to go out and play it

29:31And do it and he's gonna have to answer the questions and listen They'll be the people that come in you know, there was a lot of out of town folks Jeff's army of NFL dot com PN was there and they're gonna come in and they're gonna ask about the knee right like it did I think for most of us locally once he plays well, there'll be a few more Got to check in. I know you don't want to hear it, but how did it feel? You know how did it work with the brace? I asked him about an e-brake because there was somebody was talking about that Run out the practice without the knee brace at one point. Did you see this Sam? And he was told go get it like you'd forgotten it or something or tried to play it. Is that did you see a situation like that? I didn't I didn't see him. They practice okay I heard that and I was like okay So maybe we're wearing the brace just to get all the way up to the games and And then we also would see him kind of fiddle with with Tightening it and he made a good point like when I wear the football pants it stays into place better than when we're out there in shorts and everything But you know he went through it like no, that's what the brace was designed for I'm gonna wear it. So I don't know if that was Accurate or not what I heard, but um, you know, I think those kind of questions are

30:36mandatory along the way if he's if in absolutely No problem with the question. Yeah, and second quarter of he's wrestling with that brace or kind of trying to which you know To grow and art told me you know, it's gonna get off kilter Depending upon when it is and I do think I'll say again I think figuring out how he's gonna slide Is important because he we looked at a couple of videos and he slides with that injured knee down Like the right leg is forward and the left leg is the one that's under when he goes into the baseball slide That's a big brace that he's got it that's gonna hit down first and does he has he I mean literally I I wonder allowed has he practiced sliding Because when they're comparing down on him and he wants to get down if it's awkward getting down He leaves himself open to taking a hit to the head if he doesn't get on the ground pass enough He wasn't he wasn't good at sliding to begin with yeah As far as you're as far as your timeline is for when he could say this We're gonna put more thought into it than I think he has although I really do think he put thought into I think he went into that press conference thinking I'm gonna I'm gonna end it like this But let's let's go through the two options as far as saying it now versus saying it after a week one

31:38You say it after a week one and you want a game. It's gonna seem like you're rubbing in a win And that's why I can understand saying it now like I'm over this is what he's he's telling the world This is this is this is part of the past I would argue that and it me I mean you guys Payed by what's into his sound on a daily basis than I do, but I just feel like This past when he's talked about this stuff over the past few months I think he's been more thoughtful More revealing more vulnerable than he's ever been in his career I think he tends to say a lot of stuff that are really vanilla I mean we talked football that's one thing but talking about his personal life I don't think he's ever let people in to this extent and so I imagine there's been a lot of You know a lot of time spent thinking about this stuff a lot of time Ruminating on it and for guys who were you guys like him who were still used to controlling everything around them with their skills This is a very This is a very different time for him and so I think as much as he can talk about confidence He has no idea what he's gonna be when he starts playing football again. Yeah, that's interesting comments from russia rice

32:40I wanted you hear up on that podium one of the things when he's asked where he's better he said he's in better shape This year over last year Sam which last year he seemed to have an uninterrupted offseason this year We know we had 30 days in jay. Oh yet rehab that he was doing what did you make from the comments from russia rice? Yeah, the ultimate interruption this this offseason I actually think there's no one who's benefited more from the josh Simmons conversation and the passion homes conversation Then russia rice because and most years This would be the number one storyline of training camp because the fact is like russia rice did not have a good first I would say two to three weeks of training camp To where you're like when is this guy gonna sort of look more like the guy that we've seen when he's on the field because The questions about russia rice have never been about when he is available. It's about will he be Available. I think he's looked more himself over the past like week and a half to two weeks, but They're you can't understate like how important russia rice is to the offense

33:41I think he needs to be the number one option for the chiefs But the only way he can be is if his body is ready for it and the questions about russia rice are not just as availability Right now it's you know What kind of shape is he in I don't just mean like literal shape like what's he way and everything but like What's he feeling going into the season because when you don't feel like yourself for the first two weeks That starts to get in the back of your mind too, I think yeah, that's a good point Jeff what'd you hear from russia rice would you see from him up at the podium yesterday? He seemed a little bit I don't know passive not the right word but more more tentative. I think he's trying to I felt like he didn't want to spend much time thinking about or talking about what he wants to do He wants to go do it But but I I agree with sam that a lot of this stuff it focused on the physical stuff in the knee I really think mentally how can you Be in the space he's in and you've spent the last

34:42You have to go back a couple years to where he was really on top of his game and really playing at a high level like Just the homes like I wonder is he ready to be the kind of player he needs to be To help this team win to get the big contract coming off the offseason he's had He's had so many misstep style as so many things happen entry-wise that I'm a big believer in rhythm and continuity and consistency when it comes to playing at a high level Another player we just don't know what he's going to be he may get better as the season goes along But to sit here and say he's going to go off go out and set it off the week one I just I don't think that's going to happen Well, there's one other go ahead string no go ahead Well, I was gonna say there's one other piece of this which is the team that has given russia rice the most trouble Is is the broncos because they like to play man-to-man and really physical with him at the line of scrimmage and He really didn't I mean we we were calling out routes that he had in Denver last year and what was that week 10 because He couldn't get open and that game and

35:42so Like if you're not completely confident in your body not completely confident in yourself like this is a bad Bad week to feel that and I'm not saying that's where russia rice is. I'm just saying This is a week where you need to you need to feel fully confident like you can do everything because The broncos can expose Expose you even when you're when you're at your best Yeah, I one of the things that I was taken by was How young he seemed up there? Yeah, you know, I mean Did you use the term vulnerable Jeff or I just get that in my head okay? Well, you were talking You said it you put it in there and You know because you you see the horrific accident you see drive like that you see the defiant Way that he and the the others just are marching away like we don't give a crap and that Does not seem like the person that's at that podium right? I'm not saying the person to podium's a good guy or a bad guy or anything He just seems young vulnerable and You know, we hear some things from in and around the building that you know boy

36:45He's great up here. He's great with his teammates his teammates love him everything seems to go well All the problems seem to happen when he's down in Dallas. I mean, I see a guy who is so like I actually for cheese fans Think this is a good thing and you tell me Blow this up if you think that this is just Homerisms here, but for cheese fans I do think when he's here and when he's around the team you should feel good that he's gonna give everything in the rehab He's gonna give everything in play in football because he's got Patrick Maholmes influencing him He's got strong positive influences christ jones isn't as much. I think the the vocal leader Um, but he is like when christ jones comes to play he's physically ready to play You don't walk in that locker room and go well There's the highest paid defensive guy and he's just mailed it in you walk in and go Jesus look at the shape that guy's in He put it in the time. I think when those positive influences are around him You're gonna get the best of russia rice Some point somebody near him needs to say stop going to texas You need to stay don't go her Around these people that have a positive influence because you're clearly a very impressionable young man

37:49And you seem to just go with whatever's going on around you Because he just doesn't seem like the type of guy that would be like I don't think he was road racing Because it was his idea and he said hey guys, let's go do this Like I think it went that direction and he just followed what right along with it. I just That that that struck me How you know and I then I'm struck by that every time he talks Yeah, it then he didn't strike me In that setting again. I'm not a round the guy a whole lot. So I don't know what he's like behind the scenes. He didn't strike me As that confident of a player and maybe that's not fair to him, but when I watched Jamar chase at a podium or CD lamb or whoever you want to name I'm on a ride saint brown when you're around those players that position especially you see A lot of alpha male testosterone. Give me the ball. Let me do it. It's just who I am and he just seem like again I hit using these words like passive or or or meek, but he came across as somebody who doesn't really know who he is

38:50Um, and that you know what I'm saying and that how to me maybe part of his maybe what you're saying Part of the problem. I mean, I don't want to say he was childish Right because he answered the questions. He was polite. He he processed the information He knew what he was being asked he gave he gave a thoughtful answer, but childlike Yeah, it's almost like you we're we're interviewing you know a very young man, you know, I want to stop from You know, I just like just okay. I'm here and wherever your questions go like there was never gonna be like That question's out of line I'm not answering that question. That that was not gonna come from I'm with you. Jamar chase rolls his eyes three times In an interview and it's so confident in how good he is that when they ask him. Yeah, you know, you play at one we do And then he laughs like oh, I got a hate one o'clock. I got to set my alarm You know like you that there's there's some people that'd be like oh sure. I knew that. Yeah, I know it You know like in insecurity You'll act like you know everything even when you don't Jamar chase is like I know what I know what greatness is

39:51It's me, but I don't know doesn't matter. Yeah, and he was that way as a rookie. I met him as a rookie and you walked up to him and he was kind of like What do you want to ask me man? You know, I'll have a love It to how Jamar chase got there I remember at the combine a year before Jamar chase came out and you know Obviously, he was on that that LSU team but remember he was there an extra year And I remember the year before he came out asking cornerbacks at the combine or hearing cornerbacks asked at the combine Who's this hardest guy you you've ever had to defend and none of them said the guys who were coming out They all said Jamar chase and at that time he was a sophomore and so there was a he had plenty of reason to to feel that way About about himself. I will say on russia rise. He's a guy. I've always enjoyed talking to in the locker room I mean, you know without naming names There's guys you've walked into the cheese locker room who have gotten into off field trouble You said that I could see it With russia rise it has been more confounding. I mean, he's a very pleasant approachable guy

40:53To talk to in the room But at the end of the day this these mistakes he's made are his responsibility. Yeah, whether they're his idea or not There's still his responsibility Yeah, I think it's an important distinction to make for for sure I will see how he plays he's going to be an important part of the equation no doubt For how they play against the Denver Broncos. 45:03Where they're going to be going up and up and down the field and doing all kind even with the run game being a big part of this now I I saw something on Twitter a couple of days ago about the biggest week ones and it was Sammy Wackens having that huge game against Jacksonville And they were just it was so amazing to see what they look like back then you were on Twitter Yeah, I was I slipped that I was watching all the video the outrage from the Michigan game again. Michigan watching the game. I couldn't get enough of it I was But um, but yeah, it's I think it's going to be a different offense. I don't think it's going to be the sexiest offense in the world I have a hard time believing Again with some of the things that are happening right now with the offensive line Uncertainty about the receivers that they're going to just be Taking people to task the unleashing the furious realize to say I think they'll be better and what they do I think they'll be more efficient. I think they will have more options To move the football But in terms of being blown away by what I'm going to see I'm not expecting that at all. What do you make those comments Sam?

46:08Well, I guess the first thing I always make of the comments are are where he makes the comments I mean they're they're not uh, it's it's on it's on the podcast. I think that he Talks a lot about the I don't think Travis Kelsey is giving away secrets on his podcast I think throughout the week every week. It's it's very generic stuff You know, we got to play better is a frequent comment last year. You know Includes me. I include myself. I don't think he's giving away a lot And the preseason tells you that when I say preseason I mean including training camp the practice says all that tells you they're going to run the ball more And they're going to run the ball differently, which I think is more important than just running the ball more They have better personality around the ball, but we'll see like week one is going to be our first actual real indication For how different this offense is I don't think the training camp stuff is irrelevant I don't think the preseason stuff is irrelevant But it doesn't mean anything if you get back in your old habits and week one against the Broncos

47:11Just because you're losing a game at halftime. How effective do you think the running games going to be Jeff? I'm encouraged because I will say that's much I've talked about Khalil Benson and being afraid of what's going to happen When the chiefs throw that it absolutely feel like his his strength is is as a run blocker It's probably better at that Then the past blocking part of it, but yeah, I probably they've dedicated a lot to it I feel like it's going to be better just because it can't be worse than what it was last year given the personnel the people who are going to be running it I've liked what I've seen from Emmett Johnson I think for sure Smith has shown promise and it feels like him in the way to see Kenneth Walker do Anything that in the preseason that we know what he did in Seattle We know what he meant to them in the playoffs and so All things point to it being a positive for this team and I'd be hard to book hard press to think that Andy Read is going to bail on it or not really Give it its due. I think they're going to be committed to running the football and trying to make this thing work We're going to be saying after this game Sam wow

48:13I mean this this is a really good running team wow and he's And he's really changed or we're going to see maybe more effective, but still same kind of run pass ratio Still a lot more shotgun than we we think what do you what do you expect we're going to be saying about the front game after it No, you'll be saying that about the players because there will be a notice so noticeable difference and talent but Compared to what the chiefs have had in talent and running back you're talking about running back Yes, and for for the longest time and I look people There's smart people who have disagreed with me throughout last year on this, but The number one thing the chiefs needed to change was their personnel They needed to adjust their scheme the number one thing they needed to change was their talent because they faced the fewest light boxes in the league They but they still had too ineffective running backs last year I think bershard smith this year because I think he has taken a leap is better than Isaiah But Chaco was last year and who's there they're running back. So yes, you'll notice a difference

49:14Because the talent is significantly different than what it has been yeah, I think I think we'll see a difference I think they'll be under center and I think they'll get behind the guard center guard combo um I'm going to be intrigued because I do think an underrated part of being an offensive coordinator is coordinating a good run game You know for case-state fans. I mean, thank you see in Colin Klein a guy because I think Bill Snyder's brilliance as a run game coordinator and and setting up your blockers to get good angles and And be able to be effective and that is a very underrated part of think most people look at an offense coordinator and go How many times they throw it did he have a flea flicker? What trick plays did he run? And a lot of it is just being able to coach the skill of Of you know setting up blocks and being able to be effective running it I think we're going to find that out. I mean, I do I will say this We've talked about a lot of things, but this has to be for this organization a referendum on Because I I agree with you the running backs are definitely better. We haven't really seen Kenneth Walker And he is the unchallenged number one and the guys below him are definitively better than what they had last year if this team does not come out and does not run the ball effectively

50:23I'm sorry. You've got a massive financial investment in the offensive line If if the offensive line coach is not changed then the head coach has to go like I will set those dominoes up right now Because there is the personnel to be more effective running the ball And if they can't do it then there's one element that hasn't changed well too the head coach and play caller And the offensive line coach And so one of those two things has to change in the offseason if they don't run the ball effectively I think they will I don't think anything will change But I hope it's not just like yeah, they're better I hope we look at and go when they run Wow, that's a problem and they're up four with three fifty five to go this game's over Because they're going to run it down that throat even though the other team knows they're going to run it and they're going to be effective That's what needs to happen for this team. I think to be effective keys to the game Jeff what do you got? Uh, I've got three I would go with one is just they've got two take them on take them on Yeah, these are very cerebral I'm not going to like throw out stuff that you guys are going to have all right He's like keys parole not just like Eve one one one two three

51:27Yeah, but yeah one thing I would say they've got to make sure bone nicks Is as a problem for the Denver Broncos like they did not do that last year And he's a player who they should be able to get after so I would say defensively they've got to find a way to make His life difficult in this game if he's sitting back there and able to do what he wants and getting comfortable And moving around and and making plays to how it feels to his receivers. That's that's going to be a good situation for the chiefs Uh, second thing I would say obviously we just talked about it They got to run the football effectively. They got to make things easier for Patrick my homes And the third thing is this is more of a mental thing. I don't think you guys are going to have this I would say don't come out trying to show the world that you are still the team that is One three spur bowls went to five come out and start making an identity for who you are this year Right, and so don't look at the past to try to prove something look forward to try to show what you can be Oh, I got a lot. I like that a lot Sam your keys plural to the game that weren't taken by Jeff. That's right

52:31Well, look, I think you could you could mention multiple things especially I mean the health of the quarterback is it's going to be on display for really the first time but um To me it's it's do you trust your tackles enough to run your stuff and and do you have reason Throughout the game to trust your tackles enough to run your stuff because I think a lot of people Will look rightfully so it just the drop-back pass game when you look at Cleo Benson starting What I look at is the running game what it's really supposed to improve is your pass game And it's supposed to improve and ways like the under center Pass game not just the under center run game But when you run the ball under center and then you pass the ball under center You're disguising your passes because people are actually respecting you running the ball Your play action game I talked a lot you know a few weeks ago about how bad their play action game has been and that's one of the things that should benefit most Those are so developing plays your quarterback is turning his back on the line of scrimmage and

53:35The guy protecting his back is the uDFA rookie tryout and so do you trust him enough to actually run all your stuff You know Pete Sweeney rightfully so asked patch asked Andy read yesterday Can you run everything with patch bombs is is that where you're at? I wanted to ask can you run everything because of where your left tackle is right now no And so let me answer that And I don't expect that's the key to the game. Yeah, I don't expect Andy What is the playbook would be because of the left tackle situation? Yeah, sorry. I interrupted you there twice. I apologize. I don't expect Andy read to say that But we know we all know here. No, you can't like they we are not gonna see the full display this offense against the Denver Broncos, right? We all agree No, yeah, I agree I don't I don't I don't know that I agree that the attempt won't be made. We have not We have not seen Andy read for example help a lot on tackles who need help, you know when before they turned to jotuny

54:36They benched three offensive lineman three left tackles mid game and one season three mid game and one season No, those guys were getting chip help. No, those guys were getting double team help on so like do I feel confident that Andy read after a full-off season of Tinkering and thinking about the way his offense is gonna look is gonna say no I'm gonna wait till my left tackle comes back. No, I don't feel confident. He's gonna wait on that And no, he waited chip and help when he could break Josh Simmons hand with a chip right like that's what that's what Last year he helped with Josh Simmons I listen. I'll add in I they need to be effective rushing the pastor. We've talked about that huge investment in the defensive line Same kind of thing here. Joe Cohen came in with a great reputation. They have given him plenty of resources And there is no reason that this defensive line shouldn't be able to pressure with four Right and that has to happen. It has to start here And I know it's a tall task against a very good Denver Broncos offense line I'm not asking him to go out and dominate the game and have it look like one of the Bears regular season wins in 85 where they just mauled everybody

55:43There have to be some some wins along the defensive line with the front four every every pressure cannot come from a safety Looping around coming through the middle on a seven-man blitz, right? Like there needs to be some pressure That shows that the investments are given returns for the for the team So We'll see if it happens all right predictions Jeff what do you got I got Broncos 21 17 It just feels like again a game. I think something very similar to what we saw with the Patriots see hogs But maybe slow starting Maybe a lot of defense. I think a couple turnovers are gonna swing it. I just don't feel like I don't trust the cheese right now with what they've got going on their offensive line in a game of this magnitude With with the divisional opponent and I think about watching that Rams Niners game yesterday. I know was in Australia and a lot of travel things probably played into that but knowing your opponent gives you a huge advantage and when you've got the better defense

56:45You saw it last night with the with the with the Niners versus the Rams. I think that's it That's that's a huge thing for the Broncos have come into this so even though they're coming on the road They're the better team. Okay, Sam Yeah, we have like a week 15 worth of wrinkles to this game with not knowing exactly what patch from homes is gonna be Not knowing what the chip at my key to the game Well, what the chiefs often it's gonna be because of the left tackle situation not just a quarterback situation My prediction is as much about the both teams not just where the chiefs are. I'm picking the chiefs 20 to 19 Um, I don't feel as confident and I think the Broncos record was inflated last year to the degree that the chiefs record was inflated in 2024 um, so um, I think the chiefs can get by this game anyway um What was it would you have 20 20 to 19 chiefs? Okay, interesting. I like how you prefaced Well, I'm not a homer because I'm going at this. I'm looking at Denver. Yeah, so don't know

57:48I just think it's like a four. I just think look. I mean first of all we're a chiefs focus podcast But there is another team at play here. They really we haven't talked Enough of that usually because of all these other rinks with the chiefs this year usually these Friday podcasts We're constantly telling people like about this other team. It's like there's so much going on with the chiefs You know, they haven't played a game yet that it's like This other team. I don't think holds up to the value that they had a year ago The Denver Broncos won in week 17 20 to 13 And against the sloppy, you know, what against what was left of the Kansas City chiefs I'll but they scored with less than two minutes ago as a tie game at 13 all Which was amazing when the chiefs were more full of strength 22 19 the Broncos won Chiefs led 19 16 after kicking a field goal just under 10 to go My Broncos tied it with 410 and won it Will they kick at the buzzer? I think the chiefs are better right now in most places I do think Denver is taking on water
